I’ve seen countless ads for Sandals vacations – the images of happy, beautiful couples clasping hands, clinking glasses, and barefoot toes in snow-white sand – and I would always say to myself, “Someday, we’re going to do that.” In this case, my travel dreams turned into a reality and I had the opportunity to visit Sandals Royal Curaçao with my husband.

Was it everything the advertisements made it out to be?

The writer was hosted by Sandals.

Getting to Sandals Royal Curaçao

  • The Curaçao International Airport (CUR) has flights to and from North and South America, Europe and other Caribbean islands.
  • We flew on Delta with a stopover in Atlanta. Our flight from Atlanta took about four hours.
  • Complimentary airport transfers included; there’s an easy-to-find Sandals desk in the airport. Just check in there and you’ll be directed to your bus.
  • The return trip is equally straightforward, although with a more sad trombone feeling.

Where is Curaçao Anyway?

  • Located 40 miles off Venezuela’s North coast, Curaçao is part of what’s known as the “ABC Islands:” Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao.

  • All three ABC islands are constituent countries of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, so if you speak Dutch, here’s your chance to practice it.

Accommodations

Resort hotel room with brown marble floors and blue and brown tropical decor
Our room was spacious, quiet and well-decorated without being fussy. Photo credit: Jill Robbins
  • We stayed in a spacious club-level ocean-view room with a balcony.
  • The club-level amenities included a mini bar, room service and a dedicated lounge with access to special concierge services for making dining and spa reservations.
  • The big perk of club-level was having an expedited check-in and check-out. We did not take advantage of any of the other services but we enjoyed the room, which was spacious with light and airy tropical-themed decor.
  • Wanna splurge? There are swankier, more spacious and more secluded rooms on the property, many with swim-up pool patios or private pools.

SheBuysTravel Tip: If you’re looking for seclusion and some extra sizzle, consider upgrading to one of the butler suites. You’ll enjoy enhanced service and your own pool area.

Dining

Two shrimp bao buns on a plate
These tempura bao buns were so much fun: pillowy, crunchy goodness with spicy sauce. Photo credit: Jill Robbins
  • Sandals Royal Curaçao is an all-inclusive resort and yes, all-inclusive really does mean all-inclusive when it comes to dining.
  • There are eight restaurants, numerous bars – we never had to look far to find a drink – and a food truck park. We did our best to sample everything in a five-day stay but didn’t quite hit all the eateries.
  • I cannot recommend the food truck park enough and I’d happily eat the shrimp tempura bao buns every day if I could.
  • No reservations needed, except for Butch’s, the resort’s chop house, and Vincent, named for Vincent Van Gogh.

Favorites

I didn’t have a bad meal during my stay but aside from the shrimp bao buns at food truck Toteki, I had a couple of other favorites:

  • The pizza at Pietra Italian was delicious. It’s only available during certain hours and yes, it is worth scheduling your day around.
  • Kanaal wine bar/cafe serves Starbucks-style coffee, gelato and pastries but what I loved best was the cheese case. They had a stellar selection of Dutch cheeses, some I’d enjoyed before and some fun new-to-me cheeses.

Eating Downtown

Moscow Mule while dining in downtown Willemstad. Photo credit: Jill Robbins
  • Sandals Royal Curaçao has a partnership with a handful of restaurants in Willemstad that allows resort guests to experience the culinary talents of local chefs – it’s a fantastic way to get a sense of place.
  • A dining credit plus transfers come with certain room categories, so check when you reserve to see if you qualify for this perk. Sandals staff can also make recommendations on what to try off the resort.
  • The resort food was excellent but I recommend making some time to leave the bubble and sample some local flavor.

Amenities (AKA What’s Really Included)

Grab a bike and ride around the resort. They’re included in your room price. Photo credit: Jill Robbins
  • Aside from the food, pretty much everything is included at a Sandals Resort! I’m always sort of suspicious of all-inclusive packages because I’m waiting for a bill at the end for stuff I thought was free but there was no catch here.
  • All alcohol – yes, really.
  • Activities, like lawn games, pool games and pickleball.
  • Snorkeling and equipment.
  • Scuba for certified divers – more on that in a minute.
  • Bikes to explore the resort.
  • Fitness center.
  • Nightly entertainment, such as music and dance parties.
  • Airport transfers.
  • Taxes and gratuities.
  • Wi-Fi – the resort WiFi was very fast and reliable.

Sandals has an exclusive partnership with USA Pickleball, offering expert-led programming for all skill levels against stunning tropical backdrops. Photo credit: Sandals
Open air bar with wood ceiling and white furniture
We loved this open-air bar at the resort’s center and spent a lot of time here. It was tropical and breezy but managed to feel a bit like a library in a really good way. Photo credit: Sandals

Not included:

  • Spa treatments
  • Boutique/gift shop
  • Photos
  • Excursions/tours

Scuba diving at Sandals Royal Curaçao

Couple scuba diving under water
They say pictures or it didn’t happen! Photo credit: Our dive instructor, Corwin
  • Diving (+ all equipment) is included at all Sandals resorts for PADI-certified divers.
  • Certification and additional dives available for an additional fee.
  • They also offer SNUBA – sort of a cross between snorkeling and scuba – for a fee. We didn’t try it but I’m kind of curious about it now.

Diving Instruction at Sandals Royal Curaçao

couple walking in the water with scuba tanks
Scuba lessons! By the way, this is very heavy until you get into the water. Photo credit: Sandals
  • My husband and I got our scuba certification while staying at the resort.
  • There’s an online component that must be done at home before the in-water training can happen at the resort.
  • It’s doable to get certified during a resort stay if you’re prepared to make diving instruction the focus of your trip – some adjustment of departure times might be needed since there are restrictions on flying after a dive, which you’ll learn in training!

Overall Impressions and Would I Go Back?

Couple sitting by a blue pool at night
My husband and I found this to be a low-key experience overall, which we loved. We are early-to-bed people. Photo credit: Jill Robbins
  • A pretty easy tropical couple’s getaway that met or exceeded expectations.
  • Zero hidden charges.
  • The food and accommodations were A+ and the resort had a quiet, relaxed energy that I found restful and dare I say – romantic?
  • I would stay at a Sandals resort again and I’d stay at this resort again. Warm weather and relaxed energy where I don’t have to make too many decisions is my jam.

Potential Negatives

Beach with beach chairs and grass umbrellas
The beach area – if it looks familiar from the photo above, this was also where we did part of our scuba instruction – is not huge but we were happy with it. Photo credit: Jill Robbins
  • I found the nightlife vibe of the resort very chill. I loved that for me but those who crave major party energy may find Sandals Royal Curaçao sleepy. I saw mostly couples who kept to themselves and things got quiet after 9:00 pm. but all it would have taken was one super partylicious group to fire things up.
  • The beach isn’t super beachy. There’s a scenic area for photo opps – small but pretty to look at. The swimmable beach is more inlet with a protected dock than a wide open beach. For us, it got the job done.

SheBuysTravel Tip: If you consider yourself a foodie, stay at least four nights to give yourself a chance to do some serious sampling and if you want to eat at Butch’s or Vincent, ask about reservations early on in your stay.

As a Space Coast resident, the annual Taste of Space is one of my favorite times to visit the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. The limited-time event celebrates a specialty menu. While some of the flavors are familiar, the new options are creative, innovative and spark conversation around the table.

The vastness of space holds unlimited possibilities. The culinary team’s food offerings at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex mimic the excitement, curiosity and boldness that space exploration brings.

The writer was hosted.

Taste of Space: Fall Bites Food Review

Orbit Café’s Taste of Space’s Menu

Three menu items are featured on Orbit Café’s Taste of Space menu:

  • Lentil chili with crisp tortilla chips
  • Spaetzle with mushrooms
  • A warm apple blossom with caramel

I was pleasantly surprised by the lentil chili. The hearty, protein-packed dish never feels heavy. Served with tortilla chips, I controlled the perfect bite. That sense of playfulness embodies the sentiment felt throughout the Kennedy Space Center Visitors Complex.

As a dessert lover, I can never resist a sweet ending. The apple blossom surprised me with the flakey pastry and tender apples. With just the right sweetness, it captures what the Taste of Space does best, adding a twist to the classic.

SheBuysTravel Tip: The spaetzle with brown butter sauce is a dish that can get kids to venture away from simple butter noodles. It is a great food order that is approachable yet full of flavor.

Mood Rock Café Celebrates Global Flavors

During Taste of Space, Moon Rock Cafe skips the food cliches and focuses on clever interpretations of fall flavors.

  • Crispy pork schnitzel sandwich
  • Golden potato latke dippers served with cranberry ketchup
  • Chocolate Bundt cake with cranberry chutney

Channeling a taste from the biergarten, the pork schnitzel is a hearty sandwich and one that I happily shared with my group. The combination of crispy breaded pork with the bright, zesty slaw is approachable with a nod to authentic flavors.

The potato latke dippers have a great texture. More importantly, dipping them into the cranberry ketchup brightens the whole dish. The slightly tangy condiment made me ask for a second helping.

SheBuysTravel Tip: The chocolate Bundt cake is a must-order for chocolate lovers. It is rich and is easily shared with others. It is a delightful treat to end a long day of exploration.

Taste of Space: Celebrity Chef Edition Brings Together Chefs and Astronauts

A highlight of the annual event, the Taste of Space: Celebrity Chef Edition pairs culinary greats with former NASA astronauts. It is an opportunity to showcase how food connects people and the cosmos.

According to the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex team, the chefs and astronauts have been collaborating on their specialty dishes. In a recent Jet Tila interview, the chef said that this experience is a “full circle” moment for him. While he will be bringing food from his repertoire, the powerful, flavorful dishes will excite the crowd.

During the kick-off event, I learned that one of astronauts’ favorite dishes in space is shrimp cocktail. Maybe one of the chefs will offer a creative take on shrimp with a spicy condiment.

SheBuysTravel Tip: Guests can opt for the Exclusive VIP Chef Experience. The $499 meal includes a plated meal by the celebrity chefs, open bar and photo/autograph opportunities with the chefs and astronauts.

Things to Do

Watch a Rocket Launch at Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex

While Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex continually celebrates space exploration, watching a live rocket launch makes a visit even more memorable. The complex’s website has a countdown alert for upcoming launches.

Guests can plan to watch an anticipated launch at two locations, Gantry at LC-39 and Apollo/Saturn V Center. Each location includes live commentary as well as launch audio and video.

These particular locations open at 9:45 a.m. on launch day. Space is limited and is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

If you like to explore during the day, like me, watch the launches from the main complex. Once the rocket clears the tree line, it will be visible. This option keeps everyone occupied instead of just waiting.

SheBuysTravel Tip: Rocket launches are never guaranteed. Weather conditions and other factors can postpone or cancel a launch.

For Families, Get Interactive

Families should prioritize Gateway: The Deep Space Launch Complex featuring Spaceport KSC and Space Shuttle Atlantis with the Shuttle Launch Experience. Pairing one of these options with time to explore the Rocket Garden, Planet Play and some food keeps everyone engaged.

For Space Buffs, Take a Bus Tour

For a more complete discussion, the Kennedy Space Center Bus Tour is a highlight. As a space enthusiast, I appreciate a three-hour comprehensive tour, but younger guests may need more interaction.

SheBuysTravel Tip: Enjoy a mid-day meal after the bus tour. It is the perfect time to regroup for a busy afternoon.

Jock Lindsey’s Halloween Hangar Bar at Disney Springs, a limited-time seasonal offering, will be open only through November 4, 2025 and it’s brilliant. Here are my thoughts about the eats and drinks at this Halloween dining experience menu at Walt Disney World’s Disney Springs

Editor’s Note: The writer attended a media preview event.

Atmosphere at Jock Lindsey’s Halloween Hangar Bar

As soon as I stepped foot into Jock Lindsey’s Halloween Hangar Bar , I felt ready for the Halloween season. Festive wreaths, garlands, banners, and paper decorations adorn the interior and exterior, while metal chairs create a casual, yet welcoming atmosphere.

In typical Disney fashion, the establishment allows children and is kid-friendly. It does not have a designated happy hour, and there are no reservations – seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis. This means that a line may form outside upon arrival.

SheBuysTravel Tip : In the evening, look for a table outside along the water for views of Magic Kingdom’s fireworks.

Jock Lindsey’s Halloween Hangar Bar offers a limited menu with light bites and beverages themed to the Halloween season. Most of the seasonal offerings are shareable and suitable for large families with adult and young children, as well as groups.

Cursed Mummy Sausages

A tomb-shaped box filled with sausages next to a blue bowl filled with sauce at a Halloween bar in Orlando known as Jock Lindsey's Halloween Hangar Bar

I absolutely loved the cursed mummy sausages served inside a coffin-shaped dish that plays five Halloween-themed tracks upon opening the lid. While I’m generally not a fan of mini sausage rolls, the pomegranate mustard sauce elevates the overall flavor profile.

Phantom Dumplings

From the moment I caught a glimpse of these chicken and pork dumplings with the rice paper wrapped on top to look like miniature ghosts, I knew these were going to be delicious. I was correct.

Alien Invader Sliders

Fried chicken sliders on top of a black plate resting on a wooden table at a Halloween bar in Orlando known as Jock Lindsey's Halloween Hangar Bar.

The Alien Invader Sliders are a more substantial option as the order comes with two sliders made with Nashville hot fried chicken, provolone cheese and dill pickles on cheddar-chive biscuits, along with olives. These are one of the most eye-catching menu items, down to the cheese made to resemble alien teeth.

Snake Egg Surprise

A hand holding a purple mocktail beverage at a Halloween bar in Orlando which is Jock Lindsey's Halloween Hangar Bar.

While I don’t drink alcohol, I tried the Egg Surprise non-alcoholic drink made with lemonade, lime juice, pear syrup, and green apple boba pearls. I liked the magenta appearance of the drink and how the boba adds texture.

Is Jock Lindsey’s Halloween Hangar Bar Worth Visiting?

A menu along with a card saying Happy Hangar Halloween on a wooden table at a Halloween-themed bar in Orlando.
Menu and photo card at Jock Lindsey’s Halloween Hangar Bar. Photo credit: Jenna Clark

Jock Lindsey’s Halloween Hangar Bar is worth visiting if you’re a fan of themed eats in a thematic setting. That said, this seasonal menu is meat-centered, which may not make it the best option for vegetarians, who can still partake of regular menu items, including The Mayor’s Reserve drink and Air Pirate’s Cargo Loaded Pretzel, to name a few

Whether you’re on a family vacation to the Walt Disney World Resort or are seeking a bar in Orlando with themed eats and beverages for spooky season, Jock Lindsey’s Hangar Bar is a solid pick. Most of the limited-time menu items carry price tags between $14 and $17.50, which can make for a more affordable meal option when visiting Walt Disney World.

The bar is also a short drive, bus ride, or walk from Walt Disney World hotels and several other properties nearby, including Walt Disney World Swan, Four Seasons Resort Orlando, and Conrad Orlando at Evermore.

The moment you step into the lobby of the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic, paradise greets you with a chilled dragon fruit welcome drink. It’s a preview of all that awaits.

At this sprawling, 121-acre all-inclusive resort , almost everything is part of your package.

Frosty pina colada and a fruity paleta? Have both. Morning protein shakes at the gym, unlimited drinks at the swim-up bar and late-night snacks – absolutely.

Opened in 2011 as Hard Rock’s first all-inclusive Caribbean property, the resort has recently undergone major renovations, adding a new water park and updated kids’ club.

Editor’s Note: The writer was hosted.

Pinktober in Paradise

October brings a special energy here. As part of Hard Rock International’s 26th annual global PINKTOBER® campaign — which has raised over $13 million worldwide for breast cancer research and awareness — this Caribbean hotel keeps the fundraising proceeds local. Money raised from their Pinktober in Paradise events directly benefit RCD Foundation and Hard Rock Heals Foundation®, funding education, screening and prevention programs throughout the region and providing direct aid to resort team members currently battling breast cancer.

As an 18-year breast cancer survivor, I was invited to participate and I loved how they promoted the event throughout the property. Staff donned themed shirts, pink drinks were served in matching cups and the casino had giant inflatable ribbons. Fundraisers included golf course events, a silent auction and a beachfront 2K Walk for a Cause.

SheBuysTravel Tip : Pinktober deals last through December 20, 2025, with up to 55% off stays, early check-in and late check-out (availability permitting). Limited edition Pinktober merchandise is available at the hotel lobby’s Rock Shop, with some proceeds benefiting the cause.

Guest Rooms

With 1,882 rooms, including suites and villas, it’s one of the largest and most luxurious resorts in the Caribbean. All rooms have pullout couches and hydro spa tubs. My tub was outdoors on the balcony so I enjoyed late night dips under the stars before heading off to sleep.

No matter where your room is, you’re never far from a pool or the beach. To get around the expansive property, you can hop on one of the 24-hour trolleys, unless you want to get in your daily steps. (Note: GPS video maps show you when the next trolley will arrive.)

SheBuysTravel Tip : Request an “A” block room for quick access to the water, or a “B” block room to be closer to the main building’s shops and restaurants. But note: some “A” rooms will be noisy during daytime hours if they overlook a pool.

Amenities

Hard Rock Punta Cana offers endless ways to play. Claim a shaded seat by the pristine, private beach covered in sugar white sand. No need to get up at the crack of dawn to claim your pool or beachside chair like at many resorts; there are plenty to go around.

There are 14 pools, including one for families, an adults-only, a waterpark and a lazy river. Each has its own vibe and music selection. There are even a couple of quiet pools for those who want to read in peace.

Highlights:

  • There are several swim-up bars to keep you refreshed and hydrated and lots of food and drink options so you can stay waterside all day.
  • If you’re a wannabe rock star, borrow a Fender guitar to jam in the privacy of your room. Curate a personalized playlist to create a vacation soundtrack.
  • Play on an 18-hole Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course
  • Dance the night away at Oro nightclub, open Wednesday-Saturdays from 11 p.m. to 4 a.m. (at an extra charge)

What’s Not Included at this All-Inclusive Resort

Some activities carry extra charges:

  • FloRider surf simulator
  • Escape rooms
  • Bowling
  • Mini golf
  • Video game room

There are also lots of shops to spend your money on diamonds, artwork, sunglasses and souvenirs. Bring your own pool toys, floats and sunscreen to avoid high resort prices.

Dining at Hard Rock Punta Cana

You’ll never go hungry here, with 26 food and beverage outlets, including 12 restaurants. Dine at a Brazilian steakhouse, burger spot, Mexican, Middle Eastern, Italian and several casual buffets.

Only Toro American steakhouse and Zen Hibachi require reservations.

Pool snack bars and food trucks serve burgers, hot dogs, wings and more. In the evening, stroll the Boulevard near the lobby for carts offering churros, waffles and Nutella crepes.

For a unique dining experience, splurge at the multi-sensory gastronomic performance of Awaken Your Senses. Travel the globe, enjoying seven courses paired with cocktails while video projections, a surround sound system, scent synchronization and an interactive table take you from the streets of London to under the Caribbean Sea. The creatively served food was some of the best at the resort.

Entertainment

No one is bored at a Hard Rock Hotel, where entertainment never stops. I watched a live Beyoncé tribute and Queen performance. There were also nights with an electric violinist and a lively guitarist who got people dancing.

Take a memorabilia tour with the Vibe Manager (what a cool job title!). Gabriella Hernandez guides guests around the property to see 500 pieces of rock history.

There’s Elton John’s Hand-Painted piano, Billy Idol’s motorcycle, gowns worn by Jennifer Lopez, Lady Gaga and Katy Perry, plus many gold records, photos, paintings and other memorabilia.

The collection also features many items from Latin music legends, reflecting the resort’s location in the Dominican Republic.

Feeling lucky? Try your hand at the slots or blackjack at the island’s largest casino. During my visit, they held a Pinktober slots challenge. One guy in our group won $1,800!

Relaxation and Wellness

Enjoy a massage or facial and dip into the whirlpool for a relaxing escape at the resort’s Rock Spa. Photo credit: Bethany Kandel

If you need a break from all the action, visit the Rock Spa, with 54 treatment rooms plus several couples’ suites. Enhance your experience with a hydrothermal session that includes stops in the sauna, steam and ice rooms. Coat your body with a muddy exfoliant and then wash it all off in a cold shower. End with a whirlpool soak. Or head outdoors for a massage under a thatched-roof palapa by the pool, accompanied by a frozen mojito.

There’s an expansive gym and numerous daily free exercise classes indoors and out. Take a spin class, do a water workout in the sun, play beach volleyball or learn some salsa moves poolside.

Family-Friendly Features of the Hard Rock

Kids and adults of all ages can enjoy dozens of slides and water fun at the resort’s onsite Rockaway Bay Water Park. Photo credit: Bethany Kandel
  • Family-friendly accommodations: Every room includes a pullout couch and many can be connected. For a multi-gen vacation, families can also stay in a spacious two-to-four bedroom suite or villa.
  • Kid-centric amenities: The Roxity Kids Club is free of charge. It’s open daily from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 to 10:45 p.m., for ages 4-12. Younger kids are welcome with an adult. The Rockaway Bay Water Park has dozens of slides, suitable for even small children and is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Entertainment galore: There’s tons to do at all hours of the day and night for kids and teens, including an arcade, bowling alley, laser tag, pickleball courts and teen club with ping pong and pool tables. (Note: some have extra charges.)
  • Getting around: The resort’s trolley system makes it easy to get around and welcomes strollers. Coming soon: bicycles will be added to explore the expansive property.

As the sun sets and the fog rises, I feel the frights build and the urge to scream. Halloween Horror Nights 2025 is full of intense and unique experiences. This year’s theme proved that the creative team pushed the boundaries. While the event’s catch phrase warns to “never go alone,” this time, I embraced my solo status and found a way to face my fears.

This specially ticketed event at Universal Studios Orlando, which runs on select nights through November 2, 2025, offers a variety of scares:

  • 10 haunted houses
  • 4 scare zones
  • 2 shows
  • An array of specialty food booths and specialty merch.

Here’s my assessment of the scares and how I survived each one.

Editor’s Note: The writer attended a media event at Halloween Horror Nights.

Before choosing to enter the alluring manor, I had to remind myself, art is in the eye of the beholder. With the El Arista house, the transformation of the art and the artist made me question the thin line between inspiration and insanity. Fiction rooted in truth is the scariest story to be told.

While the jump scares waited to emerge from window pains and darkened corners, the intricacies captivated my attention and lured me with their beauty. If I had an opportunity to see this house with the lights on, it would be as stunning as a museum.

How I Survived

Although the concept is quite disturbing, the detailed design took me to a place that I love, a museum. With that reference, I could put aside the creepy factor and focus on the artistic concept.

Did I succumb to one of the tortured souls waiting in darkened corners? Yes, I did. But, keeping a familiar, cherished memory in mind helped my screams feel a little less frightful.

Five Nights at Freddy’s: Best Interpretation of a Theme

From my kids’ playing the game years ago to the recent movies, the popular Five Nights at Freddy’s concept was familiar. What I did not expect in this haunted house is to be captivated by the animatronics. Created by Jim Henson’s Creature Company, those signature characters made me think they were friends, not foes.

The haunted house captured what I remember from those classic childhood pizza joints. Blending imagination with fun, there were plenty of potentially happy moments that quickly brought a false sense of ease. That moment of belief let my guard down and the scares became more intensified.

How I Survived

Even though I had a few moments of laughter, Five Nights at Freddy’s lingered in my memories long after I exited. If I had the opportunity to do a second or third run, this one would be my top choice. It tapped into my childhood memories, which kept me from being too scared.

Dolls: Let’s Play Dead: You Will Never Look at a Dollhouse the Same

Sometimes the Halloween Horror Nights creative team takes a different approach to its creations. In the Doll House, guests shrink in size and become one of the toys. Even before walking into the first room, I felt the creepy factor. I prepared for the wrath from the doll that I misplaced all those years ago.

As I moved from room to room, each visual got creepier. Although it was not demonic, the twisted toys seemed to come from a child’s worst nightmare. This idea is not as simple as just a doll whose head has been shaved. These creatures are worse than the items plucked from the trash.

How I Survived

Since the Dolls house transformed all those childhood toys, I simply reminded myself that this experience was make-believe. Even though the red coils radiating heat made me think differently about that Easy Bake Oven, nothing is real. At the same time, I will ever again leave something precious near a heat source.

The Horrors of The Wyatt Sicks: Even Non-WWE Fans Will Be Impressed

A few scenes will leave people speechless. Without giving away all the secrets, the television screen portion will have people mesmerized by the impressive visual. It is creepy in the most entertaining way.

How I Survived

The key to my survival of this HHN house was to put myself in the mindset of walking through a television studio. Just like a good commercial breaks up an intense plot, each staged scene had a build-up. Those moments allowed me to prepare for the jump scares waiting in the next room.

As for that rocking chair, it might be time to sit a spell. The lamplight will lead the way.

Jason Universe: Unrelenting Classic Horror

Jason horror character

The first horror movie that I ever saw was Friday the 13th. Even just the first notes of that song can make me recoil. In this haunted house, the frights hit from the first moment and never let up until the exit.

For anyone who remembers Insidious from a previous Halloween Horror Nights will understand how this Jason Universe experience never stops. From start to finish, the man in the hockey mask is everywhere.

How I Survived

In the best possible way, it had me jumping at every turn. Even when I could expect that jump scare, I was off kilter. But, I anticipated this before even walking into the experience. More importantly, it was my last house of the night. At that point, I was a little more numb. This haunted house is the one that will get even the most seasoned HHN guest.

Terrifier: Not Worth the Hype

Terrifier clown haunted house

Anyone who follows Halloween Horror Nights knows that the Terrifier house is the most extreme offering that Universal’s creative team has ever done. From intense smells to the “wet” experience, it is unlike anything previously offered.

While Art the Clown is everywhere this year, this house left me wishing that I had not put on the poncho. Yes, the movie is about extreme gore, but many of this house’s moments seemed gratuitous. I felt that it was more about being grossed out versus being scared.

How I Survived

The best way I can encourage anyone to attempt the Terrifier house is to just know that it is going to be gross. Similar to the tasteless potty humor joke, it is about the reaction to the moment versus the moment itself. When you know it is all make-believe, that sprinkling on the way out is not as disgusting.

An official hotel partner of SeaWorld Orlando, DoubleTree is the top choice for families spending a lot of time at SeaWorld. SheBuysTravel contributor Amanda Williams has this to say about DoubleTree by Hilton:

“There’s a reason it is called DoubleTree by Hilton Orlando at SeaWorld…proximity to SeaWorld couldn’t be better. Really we just had to walk around the pool area and follow the signage to SeaWorld. After crossing one street that wasn’t too busy we were there! You walk right through the parking area where buses and shuttles pick up and drop off, so you’re saving the parking fee and walking just a few feet more than the poor saps who drove. This trip was hosted. All opinions expressed are entirely my own.

Universal Orlando began celebrating Halloween Horror Nights in 1991. That’s more than three decades of trying to outdo the blood, gore, screams and scares from the year before.

After attending opening night of this year’s Halloween Horror Nights event, I can assure you it is one of the bloodiest, goriest, most gruesome to date. I screamed in terror more times than I can count.

This year, every house was one I couldn’t wait to experience again. But, I loved them for different reasons. To help you prepare for your visit, I’ve ranked them based on how scary, disgusting and fun they each were (because the best houses are a combination of all three).

What is Halloween Horror Nights?

Halloween Horror Nights takes place each year at Universal Orlando’s Universal Studios Florida park and at Universal Studios Hollywood. Both events are similar, but the lineup of haunted houses, scare zones and live shows differ between the two locations.

This year’s Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Orlando features five haunted houses based on popular movies, video games and streaming shows and five original houses dreamt up by Universal’s twisted (and possibly tormented) creative team.

This separately-ticketed event usually runs from late August through early November, so there is plenty of time to plan a visit with your “scream squad.”

What are the best and worst houses at Universal Orlando’s Halloween Horror Nights this year?

Here’s the thing, which house is “best” and which is “worst” is totally subjective and I would argue is not the best way to describe each house.

We all visit HHN for different reasons. Some people love seeing their favorite pop culture properties come to life, while others want to test just how much blood and guts they can handle before they have to look away.

Rather than ranking the houses from best to worst, I’ve assigned scores between 1 and 10 for how scary, gory, fun and smelly each house is so you have a good idea of what you are walking into before you cross each terrifying threshold.

Five Nights at Freddy’s

Large animatronic puppets performing music on stage
Freddy Fazbear and friends. Photo credit: Tarah Chieffi
  • Scary: 5 out of 10
  • Gory: 2 out of 10
  • Fun: 10 out of 10
  • Smelly: 0 out of 10
  • Trophy: Felt the most like walking through my TV screen and into a movie

Five Nights at Freddy’s is based on the hit video game and 2023 film of the same name. I recommend watching the film before you visit so you are familiar with the characters, but it follows the story of a security guard working the night shift at a defunct pizza place similar to Chuck E. Cheese.

Unfortunately, Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza is haunted by possessed animatronics in search of their next victim. It doesn’t take much to make me scream and I did plenty of it in this house, but it wasn’t particularly gory or terrifying because most of the scares come from the animatronic puppets.

Universal collaborated with Jim Henson’s Creature Shop to build the Freddy, Foxy, Bonnie, Chica and Cupcake puppets – some as big as eight feet tall – who are trying to murder you throughout the house. For fans of Five Nights at Freddy’s, like myself, getting to basically walk into the restaurant and become a character in the film was one of the highlights of my night.

El Artista: A Spanish Haunting

A statue coming to life in a haunted house.
A statue coming to life. Photo credit: Tarah Chieffi
  • Scary: 6 out of 10
  • Gory: 4 out of 10
  • Fun: 5 out of 10
  • Smelly: 2 out of 10 (because they were good smells)
  • Trophy: The best use of possessed inanimate objects

Each year, there is a HHN house that is as beautiful as it is horrifying. This year, that house is El Artista: A Spanish Haunting. The facade is a late-1800s Spanish colonial manor with stained glass windows and from late 1800 overgrowth stained glass windows and archways associated with Gothic architecture.

SheBuysTravel Tip: If you think you smell flowers when you enter the conservatory, you’re right. Universal pumped in floral smells to fully immerse you in the experience.

The house comes to life as you walk through each room. I never thought I’d be scared of wisteria, journal pages or sculptures, but I was when they were trying to attack me! The deeper you venture into the manor, the more evil it becomes.

The Horrors of The Wyatt Sicks

A man with a bird mask and long hair in a haunted house.
Mercy the Buzzard, a member of the Wyatt Sicks.
  • Scary: 7 out of 10
  • Gory: 7 out of 10
  • Fun: 6 out of 10
  • Smelly: 0 out of 10
  • Trophy: The most likely to make you tear up

After experiencing The Horrors of The Wyatt Sicks, it jumped toward the top of my list, even though I had low expectations because it is based on WWE characters I am not very familiar with. It helped that I read up on the story of The Wyatt Sicks before my visit and I recommend you do the same.

This house was both scary and oddly emotional because The Wyatt Sicks, a real-life wrestling faction, formed as a tribute to the late Bray Wyatt, a wrestler who died in 2023. The house acts as a tribute to Bray Wyatt, with terrifying rooms featuring the group’s alter-egos, Uncle Howdy, Ramblin Rabbit, Mercy the Buzzard, Abby the Witch and Huskus the Pig.

Terrifier

  • Scary: 10 out of 10
  • Gory: 12 out of 10
  • Fun: 7 out of 10
  • Smelly: 10 out of 10
  • Trophy: The most likely to make you laugh and scream at the same time

I know enough about myself and the “Terrifier” films to know that I would not enjoy the off-the-charts blood and guts the franchise thrives on. But that doesn’t mean I disliked this house. Yes, it was as disgusting, wet and smelly (they really do pump disgusting smells into the house) as Universal claims, but it was also oddly hilarious.

Art the Clown – the murderous antagonist of the “Terrifier” movies – is beyond demented, but he just has so much fun doing it that you can’t help but laugh in between screams. If you want an idea of just how gory this house is, it has the most dead bodies of any HHN house ever created.

As you near the end of the house, you can choose to venture down a “dry path” or a “wet path.” If you choose the latter, you will definitely get wet (luckily, it’s only water) and you’ll be treated to one final jump scare from the film’s heroine that you don’t get on the dry path.

Jason Universe

Jason from "Friday the 13th" wielding a knife
Jason is around every corner. Photo credit: Tarah Chieffi
  • Scary: 8 out of 10
  • Gory: 5 out of 10
  • Fun: 2 out of 10
  • Smelly: 0 out of 10
  • Trophy: The most scares per square foot

This house brings you face-to-hockey-mask with one of the most slashers of all time, Jason.  If you have a Jason-specific phobia, I cannot recommend this house less. The star of the “Friday the 13th” film franchise is literally lurking around every corner.

In fact, Universal stated that this house has the most scares per square foot of any house in HHN history. This house is relentless. At times, it feels as if Jason is coming at you from every direction at the same time (probably because he is). You’ll visit Camp Crystal Lake and Jason’s decrepit living quarters, giving this house a bit of a nostalgia factor for fans of the films.

Fallout

A radioactive creature in a haunted house
A radioactive creature in the “Fallout” house. Photo credit: Tarah Chieffi
  • Scary: 5 out of 10
  • Gory: 5 out of 10
  • Fun: 8 out of 10
  • Smelly: 0 out of 10
  • Trophy: Will get you the most excited for a second season

Similar to “Five Nights at Freddy’s,” the “Fallout” house began as a video game. It then became an Amazon Prime streaming series, and that iteration is what the house is based on. The short version is that “Fallout” follows survivors of a nuclear war. This haunted house recreates the various settings those who survived took to and the dangers they encountered.

SheBuysTravel Tip: Look for an Easter Egg for season two inside this house. There is a new character lurking in the shadows.

I didn’t find this house overly scary, but, as a huge fan of the show, that had more to do with how excited I was to see these characters again. The radioactive creatures and the menacing character known only as “the Ghoul” certainly gave me a fright that had me running toward safety.

Hatchet and Chains: Demon Bounty Hunters

A chain-wielding cowboy in a haunted house

  • Scary: 8 out of 10
  • Gory: 8 out of 10
  • Fun: 6 out of 10
  • Smelly: 0 out of 10
  • Trophy: The most likely to make you feel like you’ve been caught in a shootout

I grew up watching westerns on tv with my grandparents. This house is like that but the good guys are a demon and a demon hunter (an unlikely pair, to say the least) and the bad guys are demons who have infiltrated an old western town and are possessing the townspeople by physically entering their mouths. It’s quite an unpleasant process to watch.

Hatchet and Chains: Demon Bounty Hunters was born out of a scene from last year’s Slaughter Sinema 2 house. This year, it got the full house treatment, complete with a demon horse, a train that barrels through the town and a shootout.

Dolls: Let’s Play Dead

A multi-headed doll in a haunted house
A multi-headed doll. Photo credit: Tarah Chieffi
  • Scary: 5 out of 10
  • Gory: 3 out of 10
  • Fun: 10 out of 10
  • Smelly: 0 out of 10
  • Trophy: The most likely to make you regret how you treated your dolls as a child

If you thought the haircuts you gave your dolls as a child were bad, it’s got nothing on what Lyla, the little girl who inspired this house, does to her play things. As you enter Dolls: Let’s Play Dead, you are shrunk down to the size of a doll to see just how Lyla likes to “play” with her toys. Think melted faces and missing (or extra!) body parts.

SheBuysTravel Tip: There are three guest activated triggers (or GATs) in this house. If you see a big red button, push it to trigger a special effect.

Because most of the scares came from dolls, this house wasn’t gross or terrifying, but it is still unnerving when a multi-headed doll jumps out at you or a doll with a melted face is screaming in pain.

Grave of Flesh

  • Trophy: The nightmare you hope isn’t true about what happens when we die

We’ve all wondered what happens to us when we die and after experiencing Grave of Flesh, I sincerely hope what is depicted in this haunted house is not it. As you enter this house, you are walking into the Halmouth Cemetery (you can probably guess what that is meant to sound like). Oh, by the way, it’s your funeral.

After literally walking into your own grave and further into the depths of the underworld, you’ll encounter flesh-eating creatures who survive on the bodies buried in the cemetery..including your own. The tight, underground spaces (with skeletons reaching out of the walls) and hungry demons made this house one of the scariest of the night.

  • Fun: 4 out of 10
  • Smelly: 0 out of 10
  • Trophy: Best use of a giant creature in a haunted house

Galkin: Monsters of the North was one of the houses that surprised me the most this year. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but the storytelling, scenery and, of course, scares pushed it much higher on my list than I anticipated.

With its focus on the winged, horned and wolf-like creatures common in Norse mythology, this house had some of the most jaw-dropping beasts of the entire event.

It was equal parts awe-inspiring and frightening and had my favorite finale moment of the night. I won’t spoil it, but let’s just say I was happy to run straight out of that house after seeing this creature.

What is the scariest house at HHN 2025?

Hands down, Terrifier was the most, well, terrifying house at Halloween Horror Nights this year. This house knows your limits, and could not care less. Each scene is more gruesome (not to mention wet and stinky) than the last and Art the Clown’s killing methods are truly terrifying (but I applaud his originality).

What’s funny is this house is also a fan favorite this year. Whether or not you like the movies, Art the Clown will wriggle his way deep into your heart with his sadistic-yet-endearing demeanor.

What is the least scary house at HHN 2025?

Though I would say Five Nights at Freddy’s is the least scary of the 10 houses at Halloween Horror Nights this year, it was among my favorite houses of the night, as well as many other guests I spoke with.

SheBuysTravel Tip: If you want to ensure you see all 10 houses in one night, opt for a RIP Tour or purchase the Express ticket add-on so you can skip the standby lines. Regular lines can grow as long as two hours or more for popular houses.

What it lacked in blood and guts, it made up for with fan-service moments from the film and frequent appearances from the large-as-life animatronics who entertained families at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza before they became possessed.

Editor’s Note: This was a hosted trip experience.

It’s easy to pack a week full of family fun in Citrus County, Florida. The most well known city there is Crystal River – the Manatee Capitol of the World, while the largest city in the county is Homosassa Springs.

This area has an incredible mix of delectable food, thrilling water adventures and even inland explorations! Come along for this in-depth tell-all of what to do, see, eat and find for the family in Crystal River and beyond.

SheBuysTravel Tip: Skip the airport stress — Lyft’s On-Time Pickup Promise guarantees your scheduled ride shows up within 10 minutes of your pickup time. If it doesn’t? You’ll get Lyft Cash. You can schedule up to 90 days in advance and even lock in your rate. Use code SBT25 to save 25% off ONE scheduled ride to the airport.

Crystal River at a Glance

Crystal River is probably a place you’ve heard of because of the renowned manatee swimming excursions that draw people by the thousands to the Kings Bay area in the chilly winter months.  The natural springs warmer water draws the manatees in to survive.

There are several options for lodging in the city and a ton of restaurants with fantastic food options! Especially if you love seafood! We’ve been to Crystal River a half dozen times and have not run out of fun things to do and see.

  • This is a family-friendly playground. All the activities are inclusive of nearly all ages – multi-generational, all family members welcome travel!
  • Not a metro area. The area is somewhat rural, old-Florida charm, fewer chains.
  • Florida in the summer is going to be hot. Make sure to plan your day around the sun and the water!

SheBuysTravel Expert Tip – this is a bonafide year around paradise, so book your time based upon important dates in NATURE – manatee inland migration (winter months, December through roughly March), scallop season (summer months, usually July and August depending on permit status and county), etc.

Things to do in Crystal River

Crystal River is nestled into Florida’s Nature Coast and the place is aptly named. You will love the convergence of river and sea resulting in mangroves, which offer incredible abundance in wildlife and birding. If nature is your jam, Citrus County has your number:

  • Kacey’s Custom Adventures Kayak Rentals and Tours – We have wanted to take a glow kayak adventure for a while and finally did it! It was super relaxing and we enjoyed the best sunset while touring some peaceful springs. Do it in the winter for better chances of manatee mingling.
  • Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park is a spot that I’ve eyed for years! The famous hippo is now passed on, but the other wildlife residing there is interesting and the $5/person boat ride to the park from the visitor’s center is gorgeous.
  • Mertailor’s Mermaid Aquarium Encounter is a spot I didn’t know I’d love so much! Located in Lecanto, a few minutes from Crystal River, the site is where pretty much all of the mermaid tails in show biz are made (including ones for Lady Gaga and Beyonce. The aquariums were so clean and well maintained, I was in awe.
  • Three Sisters Springs Park is a quiet space that is owned by the city and managed by the National Fish and Wildlife Service as a reserve. A well-maintained trail and lovely boardwalk show you the springs from land. Go during winter or cooler days, it’s a really hot walk in the summer months!
  • First Friday’s – Downtown in the summer months, the first Friday of every month gathers food trucks and artisan booths and live music. We happened upon it while exploring the lovely murals downtown and it was a great way to get to know the area.
  • Manatee Swim – Enjoy this year around, but peak in winter months, Paddletail Waterfront Lodge can set you up with manatee experiences that are no fuss, easy for families!

Get on the Water: Make a Day of Scalloping

Boat ride with local captains to scalloping grounds in Kings Bay, Florida.

This is the best tip I can possibly give you – if you’re coming to Citrus County and Crystal River, get out on the water! It’s not only the best way to beat the heat, it’s such a wholesome, fun way to spend a day as a family! Your kids will not soon forget snorkeling in the saltwater looking for tasty treasures in the seagrass.

It’s a fulfilling adventure to go scalloping in the summertime in Florida. Paddletail Waterfront Lodge took care of everything – from the permit to the scallop shucking, start to finish we just showed up to have a great time. We were even treated to a little scallop ceviche on the boat!

The summertime happy vibes were strong on this trip! I have several videos of both kids smiling and jamming to music. I can tell you one thing that wasn’t present or even mentioned – their devices! No one was bored or whiny, it was full-throttle fun all day!

  • Trips last about five hours
  • A trip like this costs around $500, depending on how many people you have, up to 6
  • It’s not about the amount of scallops you haul in, but about the entire experience
  • You’re still really likely to find scallops – but remember, they are wild, too!
  • Paddletail Waterfront Lodge has some of the best captains around. Hands down.
  • They supply the mask, fins and snorkeling gear. They also have PFDs available.

Places to Eat in Crystal River and Around Citrus County

  • Bayside Kraft Kitchen – casual dining experience with an excellent patio and fabulous menu, including offerings for kids. Three minute walk from Paddletail Waterfront Lodge.
  • Guyer’s Ice Cream & Doughnuts – the coolest ice cream shop, where you can get a ‘flight’ of different kinds of ice cream or one of many doughnut concoctions. You can even make your own recipe for a fresh doughnut! Downtown Crystal River; 3-7 minute drive.
  • Waterfront Tiki Bar & Grill – Cook your catch options available for those going scalloping and wanting their catch cooked – we tried pan seared, fried and blackened scallops. All super tasty, but the simple pan sear was our favorite. Located at Paddletail Waterfront Lodge.
  • Cattle Dog Coffee Roasters – a coffee shop offering some yummy breakfast sandwiches and pastries as well as an insane amount of roasts and flavors, even in Keurig style cups for you to take with you to enjoy back home! Downtown Crystal River.
  • Crump’s Landing – Beachy tiki dining spot for lunch/dinner with a bar and a sandy beach right on the water. Crump’s is giving serious beach party vibes, but is perfectly calm for lunch. Really neat atmosphere. Homosassa, FL (about 20 minutes drive from Crystal River.)
  • Katch Twenty-Two – Upscale fine dining, perfect for special occasions. We went for my 40th birthday and the drinks and food were unmatched. Make a reservation – if you want to dine early you’ll have an easier time getting in. Located in Lecanto, a short drive from Crystal River.

Where to Stay in Crystal River

Paddletail Waterfront Lodge is incredibly located – in town but you’d never know it. It’s also waterfront as the name implies, which means you can park and let your vehicle sit, since it’s a full service property. They have a grab-and-go breakfast for mornings on the go or a quaint coffee shop with more hearty sandwiches and drinks in the lobby.

A new tiki bar is perched between the swimming pool and the waterfront, so it’s quite the hotspot for a bite, also! The Paddletail Adventure Center is on-site, where you can get signed up for fishing, scalloping and manatee adventures. There are kayaks and stand up paddle boards available on the property, too.

Everything is right here for you, so it’s the easiest picture perfect getaway for families! So easy that busy moms can even unwind!

Packing for your Citrus County Vacation

You’ve been packing for vacations your whole life, so I’m not going to tell you how many pairs of shorts or tank tops you need. That’s personal! But, these items listed below are tailored to this trip and with good reason!

  • Sunscreen (eco-friendly) and UV protective clothing
  • Water shoes/ flip flops
  • Beach towel for boating excursions
  • Bug repellent (the no-see-ums are around the water especially at night)
  • Umbrella *I don’t use one, but daily Florida afternoon thunderstorms are pretty common
  • reusable water bottle for hydration – it’s a full-time job in the humidity and sunshine
  • Cash tips for guides – some take Venmo now, but cash is still appreciated by most!
  • Coconut oil or a leave-in conditioner to combat ocean tangles for long hair (that one is my favorite as a scuba diver and ocean lover with long locks!)

Getting to Crystal River

I know you’re itching to get this itinerary rocking for your own family! So, here’s the skinny:

  • Crystal River is about equidistant from Tampa or Orlando. Fly in to whichever has the best flight options!
  • From the airports, it’s about 70-90 minutes drive, depending on traffic. You’ll need to rent a car.
  • There are toll roads, which can be avoided but may add drive time.
  • Between the big cities and Crystal River is mostly highway driving, not heavy traffic in most cases.
  • Take in the Florida rural charm like boiled peanut stands as you make your way to Citrus County.

Imagine walking directly out of your hotel and into Universal Orlando’s newest park, Universal Epic Universe. Or what if you could surprise your kids with a space themed room that makes them feel like an astronaut?

You can make those dreams (and more) come true when you stay in one of the three new hotels that opened alongside Universal Orlando’s newest hotel, Universal Epic Universe.

Hotel stays were hosted. All opinions expressed are entirely my own.

Universal Stella Nova Resort, Universal Terra Luna Resort and Universal Helios Grand Hotel each have unique theming, amenities and pricing that may affect which one fits your family’s travel style.

I’ve checked them all out to help you choose the right hotel for your next family vacation to Epic Universe.

Epic Universe Hotel Perks

Universal Orlando offers most of the same perks at its new hotels as it does at its existing properties. All Universal hotel guests can enjoy the following:

  • One-hour early admission to one or more of Universal’s parks, including Epic Universe. (based on a rotating calendar)
  • Complimentary shuttle bus or water taxi transportation between your hotel and Universal’s parks. Some hotels also offer a walking path.
  • Resortwide charging privileges.
  • Complimentary merchandise delivery to your hotel.

Aside from that new hotel smell, the biggest perk of staying at one of these properties is that they are much closer to Epic Universe than Universal’s existing hotels. In fact, you can see at least some of the park from each property, while Universal’s other hotels are a 15-to-20-minute shuttle ride away.

Are you ready to explore more Epic Universe? Let us inspire you!

Universal Stella Nova Resort

  • Starting price: Less than $150 per night for stays of four nights or longer and around $200 per night for one-night stays
  • Distance to Epic Universe: 10-minute walk or a five-minute shuttle ride
  • Best for: Budget-conscious families with younger kids

Walking into Universal Stella Nova Resort feels like entering a spaceport in a far-off galaxy. The curved walls, modern furniture and starry-sky artwork add to the futuristic feel.

All 750 guest rooms have two queen beds and sleep up to four guests. Stella Nova’s space theme continues into the guest rooms, with galactic murals behind the beds, and modern furniture and fixtures with sleek curves.

The hotel has a 10,000-square-foot resort-style pool, hot tub, poolside lounge, kids’ splash pad and a fire pit. There’s also a sandy beach area, plentiful loungers and umbrellas and outdoor games.

Other amenities include a quick-service eatery and coffee shop serving Starbucks coffee, lobby bar, 24-hour fitness center, arcade, gift shop and a coin-operated laundry area.

Universal Terra Luna Resort

  • Starting price: Less than $150 per night for stays of four nights or longer and around $200 per night for one-night stays
  • Distance to Epic Universe: 20-minute walk, but there is no dedicated walking path and you will cross busy streets. The shuttle ride is a quick five minutes.
  • Best for: Budget-conscious families with older kids

Universal Terra Luna Resort design and color scheme are more subtle than Stella Nova’s. The lobby has a modern feel with natural, earthy tones, and guest rooms are mostly blue and white, with planetary murals behind the bed.

Terra Luna’s pool area is similar to Stella Nova’s, but it differs in two ways that may matter to families. Terra Luna has no splash pad for younger kids to play in, but it does have a zero-entry area where younger kids can splash around and a larger hot tub than Stella Nova.

Terra Luna’s other amenities are essentially the same as Stella Nova’s. You’ll find dining, a fitness center, an arcade, a gift shop and a coin-operated laundry. The menus at the poolside lounge, lobby bar and quick-service eatery differ, but otherwise the offerings are the same.

Universal Helios Grand Hotel

  • Starting price: Around $400 for stays of four nights or more and closer to $550 per night for a one-night stay (though during busy times, the rate can climb to nearly $800 per night).
  • Distance to Epic Universe: There is a dedicated security entrance in the lobby that leads directly into the back of Epic Universe.
  • Best for: Families who want to splurge on the ultimate Epic Universe experience

Universal Helios Grand Hotel is a 500-room hotel that combines Mediterranean design with thematic elements derived from astronomy and mythology.

The hotel’s dedicated entrance means you can skip the long security line at the front of the park, and you are closer to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic and Dark Universe than guests who come through the main entrance.

Several of the guest rooms at Helios Grand have theme park views, though they come at a premium. It’s not the most financially prudent decision I’ve ever made, but I booked one of these rooms for my kids’ first visit later this year. Opening the drapes to reveal panoramic views of Epic Universe is a once-in-a-lifetime experience I want them to have.

SheBuysTravel Tip: Use the in-room tablet to program a morning wake-up routine that combines lights, music and the drapes opening automatically.

In addition to a grab-and-go eatery, coffee shop and poolside lounge, Helios Grand offers a full-service Mediterranean restaurant (with theme park views if you dine al fresco), a rooftop bar with views of Epic Universe and 24-hour room service.

The pool area features a sandy beach, zero-entry area, underwater speakers, poolside cabana rentals, a hot tub, poolside movies, and daily games and activities. Indoor amenities include a 24-hour fitness center, a gift shop and an arcade.

Choosing the Best Epic Universe Hotel for Your Family

Who should stay at Helios Grand Hotel?

  • If money is no object, staying at Universal Helios Grand Hotel is without a doubt worth it.
  • The views and convenience of being so close to Epic Universe cannot be beat.
  • In addition to convenience, Helios Grand is the only full service hotel of the three properties near Epic Universe.
Large hotel pool with palm trees, beach chairs and a colorful hotel in the background at Universal Stella Nova Resort.

Who should stay at Stella Nova?

  • Stella Nova is walkable and has a splash pad. These make it more appealing for families with younger kids and those who prefer to walk versus taking the shuttle.
  •  If you have kids (or theme park nerds) in your travel party, I would also recommend Stella Nova for the more conspicuous space theme.

Who should stay at Terra Luna?

  • Families with tweens and teens may feel more at home at Terra Luna.
  • If you value a larger hot tub, subdued aesthetic and a short shuttle ride to the parks, you might prefer Terra Luna.

Regardless of which you choose, all three hotels are great choices for your Epic Universe vacation.

Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Orlando is not for the faint of heart (and is not recommended for kids younger than 13). It features 10 chilling haunted houses, four horrifying scare zones and fantastically frightening entertainment.

When it comes to scary things, I fall somewhere between “Total fraidy cat” and “Fearless.” I attended the 34th Halloween Horror Nights on opening night, as an “HHN Newbie.” While I’m not completely traumatized, I might or might not have visions of being chased by malevolent clowns when I close my eyes.

Here’s what you need to know before you go — if you dare — and all the details on the 2025 event.

The writer was hosted.

2025 Halloween Horror Nights Dates, Prices, and Essential Info

This new season of scares begins on August 29 and runs through November 2 with select dates: August 29-31; September 3-7, 10-14, 16-17, 19-21, 24-28; October 1-5, 8-12, 15-19, 22-26, 29-31; and November 1-2. The event begins at 6:30pm each day, but ending hours vary by date.

Prices range from $86 to $131 per person (+ tax) depending on the date. An Express Pass that allows the ticket holders to skip the line once at each of the haunted houses and participating rides and attractions is $169. Premium Scream Night, a sneak peek on Aug. 28, is $415 per ticket. There’s also a VIP tour that starts at $389 and a behind-the-scenes, lights-on tour that starts at $100 per person. If you want extra time in the park before the frightening stuff starts, an additional $55 will get you in at 3:00 pm.

No Refunds, No Costumes, No Live Animals

  • The event happens rain or shine.
  • No refunds.
  • The ticket can only be used by the person who bought it on the date for which it was purchased. Note that Halloween Horror Nights is a separate ticketed event. You cannot enter the evening event with a daytime park ticket.
  • No costume masks, veils, long trains, live animals, swords or weaponry are permitted. You can read all of the costume rules here.

2025 Scares

Here’s how Universal describes the 2025 event:

“Halloween Horror Nights unleashes a double dose of dread with the ultimate nightmare as guests come face-to-face with the origins of fear through a sinister lineup of 10 all-new haunted houses, a collection of eerie scare zones, outrageous live shows, and so much more.

Halloween Horror Nights awakens two iconic franchises in all-new terrifying haunted houses inspired by the blockbuster film, “Five Nights at Freddy’s,” and WWE’s legendary The Wyatt Sicks. The horror kicks off at Universal Orlando Resort on Friday, August 29.”

10 Haunted Houses

Here is the haunted house lineup for this year’s event:

  • Five Nights at Freddy’s: Get ready for the night watch at a creepy, abandoned pizzeria, where nothing is what it seems and possessed animatronics are lurking.
  • The Horrors of the Wyatt Sicks: Go head-to-head with The Wyatt Sicks as they lure you through the ominous doorway to their shadowy realm. You’re about to meet your match.
  • Terrifier: Try your luck against Art the Clown in the Terrifier funhouse. You’ll witness his grotesque handiwork of torture and be exposed to the spatter of his victims. It’s a whole new level of gore!
  • Jason Universe: The iconic horror villain Jason Voorhees is coming for you. Step into his terrifying world, from his sinister shack in the woods to the summer camp where it all began. Evil doesn’t stay dead.
  • Fallout: Face your fears in post-apocalyptic LA. Escape from the vaults to the wasteland and confront the formidable bounty hunter The Ghoul.
  • Hatchet and Chains, Demon Bounty Hunters: In this Old West town, all hell is breaking loose. Red-hot lava demons are trying to possess everyone, melting everything in their path. Your only hope: Hatchet and Chains with their mystical weapons..
  • Dolls: Let’s Play Dead: You’re about to become doll-sized and witness the unnatural creations of a twisted little girl. You’ll be hunted by burnt fashion dolls, toys she’s melded together and undead horrors in her dollhouse.
  • Grave of Flesh: Welcome to your funeral, where things are about to go from bad to worse. You’ll enter your grave and then the underworld, where flesh-eaters who feed on the dead will hunt you for all eternity.
  • Gálkn: Monsters of the North: In a remote northern village, a wicked being rises from the dead, bringing a horde of monsters and demons from the fjords to wreak havoc on the townspeople. Try to escape the belly of the beast.
  • El Artista: A Spanish Haunting: In 19th-century Spain, a tortured artist moves to an isolated country manor to seek inspiration. Instead, the art comes alive and possesses him. You’re about to be part of the permanent exhibition.

4 Scare Zones

While the ghoulish, gory sights and jump scares inside the haunted houses are going to get your heart pumping, you’re not safe strolling through the park. There are four themed scare zones filled with “scareactors” whose mission in life – or death as it may be – is to scare the pants off of those who dare to meander through their turf.

  • The Origins of Horror: Enter a decaying conservatory of twisted vines where artists carve tributes to Halloween Horror Nights 34. You’ll encounter monstrous crows, gargoyles and more.
  • Masquerade: Dance with Death: You’re invited to a masquerade ball where bloodthirsty vampires lurk behind ornate disguises. When their masks fall, you’ll become their prey..
  • The Cat Lady of Crooked Lane: Travel down a spooky winding path to a mysterious home, where trick-or-treaters are transformed into feral felines. Be careful or you’ll be next.
  • Mutations: Toxic Twenties: In a bustling 1920s neighborhood, a BuzzCon truck with radioactive cargo crashes into a mobster getaway car sending the city into toxic pandemonium. It mutates everyone in its path, including you.

While not a scare zone, per se, Club Horror is a vibey outdoor space in Universal’s San Francisco area. There’s smoke, dancing, an undead deejay playing high-energy dance music and tall tables where you can gather with a cocktail. Think ghoulish street party.

Outrageous Live Shows

Nightmare Fuel show at Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios
I didn’t find this show particularly scary but some of the costumes and dance moves were quite spicy. Overall, I don’t recommend skipping the show. It’s incredible! Photo credit: Jill Robbins

There are two shows for 2025:

  • Nightmare Fuel: Circus of Decay features a once-vibrant circus that has festered into an unending nightmare. It’s a sinister spectacle of pyro, aerialists and illusions. The show is a jaw-dropping display of dance moves, acrobatics and music you can feel in your heart. This loud and fiery spectacular had the packed house gasping, cheering and singing along throughout the 30-minute show. The costumes and dancing are very risque and spicy. The dancers are incredibly talented and I don’t recommend skipping this show but it might make you blush.
  • Haunt-O-Phonic is a ghost story rising from its watery grave to haunt the Universal Studios lagoon, featuring towering water screens and eerie music.

SheBuysTravel Tip: Queue up for Nightmare Fuel at least 30 minutes before showtime; otherwise, you probably won’t get a seat.

Are Rides Open During Halloween Horror Nights?

Yes! If you can’t imagine a theme park visit without hopping on a thrill ride, you’re in luck: a selection of rides is open during Halloween Horror Nights. If getting on the rides is important to you, I recommend knocking this out early in the night. The event stays open late but the rides may close earlier.

The rides that will be open at the 2025 Halloween Horror Nights include:

  • Revenge of the Mummy
  • Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts
  • Transformers: The Ride 3D
  • Men in Black Alien Attack.

SheBuysTravel Tip: Timewise, it is really difficult to hit all of the haunted houses and scare zones and ride rides. Unless the scary stuff really isn’t your thing, get the most mileage out of your Halloween Horror Nights ticket by prioritizing the themed activities.

An HHN First-Timer’s Impressions

I love a good scary movie now and then, although I haven’t seen anything more recent than It – the first one — so obviously I don’t consider myself a horror enthusiast. I’ve been to some pretty scary haunted houses over the past several years, but the theming, theatrics and costuming at Universal Orlando Resort is unrivaled by anything I’ve experienced.

The haunted houses and scare zones are all incredibly immersive, with detailed backstories that are summarized above and online. If you opt for the RIP Tour, your guide will provide you with a bit more insight into the stories and details behind the monsters.

Do You Love a Back Story?

Creepy kid’s toys, twisted clowns…you know…all the good stuff. Photo credit: Jill Robbins

Some of the haunted houses at Halloween Horror Nights are based on movies, video games and pop culture and others were created by the talented team at Universal – it’s about half and half.

As someone not familiar with Five Nights at Freddy’s or Terrifier the scares were all the same to me – creepy animatronic animals, creepy clowns and creepy demon monsters. I could appreciate the creativity and the detail but someone who has a deeper need to dig into the narrative behind the jump scare might be more excited.

This event definitely has a following and many of the people I spoke to on opening night have attended year after year. Universal does an incredible job at creating all-new scary experiences year after year, which is why the event does so much repeat business. My terror slash enjoyment of Halloween Horror Nights was pretty on the surface but if you seek a more detailed level of understanding, that’s there, too.

My HHN Favorites

Scareactor in the Toxic 20s scare zone at Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios
It’s easy to say but there’s really no need to be uber afraid of the scareactors. They’ll come close but they won’t touch you. Photo credit: Jill Robbins

My favorite haunted house was El Artista: A Spanish Haunting. The crumbling 19th-century manor is dripping with decaying vines, exquisitely masked ghouls that are almost too beautiful to be frightening – almost. What really sealed the deal for me on this one was the gargoyle (a real-life scareactor) flying across the ceiling on a cable. My favorite scare area was Mutations: The Toxic Twenties. The roaring twenties costuming was on point.

Everything was really well done and there wasn’t anything I didn’t like or thought wasn’t well-themed. I think I would have gotten more out of the experience if I were more familiar with the background stories of the horror films and video games some of the haunted houses were based on but knowing those stories isn’t essential to having a good time.

Is Everything Scary at Halloween Horror Nights?

Club Horror at Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios

Overall, yes. The name gives it away. If scary isn’t your thing, Halloween Horror Nights is probably not the wisest investment at Universal Orlando Resort. With scare zones throughout the park, it’s hard to avoid a scare or two when getting from point A to point B.

If you’re with a larger group or visiting with younger kids – remember, Universal recommends this event for 13+ due to scary scenes, gore and intensity of the haunted houses – I can see wanting to have a less scary plan, but overall this is an event for people who enjoy being frightened.

The haunted houses are indeed scary. The scareactors won’t touch you – and you can’t touch them – but there are a ton of jump scares and really sinister-looking characters. Ditto for the scareactors in the scare zones – they’ll run at you with fake chainsaws and get close to you but they won’t touch or grab you. If you’re not in one of the scare zones, you can be reasonably sure the scareactors won’t bother you but there are a few characters that roam the park and can pop up anywhere.

Halloween Horror Nights Themed Merchandise

Themed merchandise is available in a pop-up store and at kiosks throughout the park. Photo credit: Jill Robbins

The 2025 Halloween Horror Nights event features trendy merchandise that’s branded for the event. There are apparel items, such as shirts and hats, mugs, and collectibles, that would make great spooky season decor pieces. There’s also a “Deathly Afraid” light-up necklace you can purchase if you’re truly wimpy. This signals the scareactors not to approach you when you pass through the scare zones, although they don’t work inside the haunted houses.

There’s a pop-up store and lots of merchandise being sold at kiosks throughout the park. If you’re seeking merch, you won’t have to look very hard to find it.

Themed Eats

The Universal Orlando Resort culinary theme has really outdone itself with themed HHN food and drinks. I sampled all the specialty foods for this year’s event, and there really is something for every taste. What I liked was that there’s a mix of hearty, real food that will fuel you through a very long night and provide a base if you plan on drinking alcohol.

The food is just “gross enough” to be a fun nod to the Halloween season without being so over-the-top that it’s unappetizing, like “Clown Cafe Bloody Popcorn,” which features popcorn chicken with pepperoni, marinara blood sauce, and parmesan over popcorn. Messy but good. If you’re looking for “Instagrammable” treats, “Mr. Cupcake” is the clear winner. It’s also a really good cupcake with raspberry and homemade cannoli filling. But that is a heck of a lot of icing!

There are also a variety of themed cocktails. The souvenir cup is $19 and refills are $14. Most of the specialty drinks are on the sweet side. The food and drink kiosks are plentiful around the park so you don’t have to look far to find them and the lines aren’t terrible.

Staying at a Universal Orlando Resort Hotel

The best way to experience Halloween Horror Nights is with a stay at a Universal Orlando Resort Hotel. You’ll receive numerous benefits, including priority entry through a dedicated gate and free transportation.

There are 11 official hotels on property. I recently stayed at Cabana Bay Beach Resort and thought it was a great fit for a quick trip to attend Halloween Horror Nights. Cabana Bay has over 2,000 rooms and a huge lobby food court, the Bayliner Diner, which is open late on HHN nights, just in case you’ve got the munchies when you get back from the parks.

The rooms are fairly no frills but they’ve got cute retro theming – I’m a sucker for the avocado green/burnt orange combo – and lots of amenities, including a bowling alley, lobby bar, a Starbucks and a great pool with a lazy river.

The hotels get into the HHN spirit with themed decor and cocktails in the bars and lounges. The Swizzle Stick in the lobby at Cabana Bay Beach Resort has a full menu of spooky libations, including the Scarlet Spell, pictured here. Photo credit: Jill Robbins

Tips for Visiting Halloween Horror Nights at Universal

  • Download the Official Universal Orlando Resort App for maps, wait times, show times and more.
  • Purchase tickets in advance and use the Universal app to speed your entry and get you to the scares that much faster.
  • If you’re looking for smaller crowds, consider visiting on weeknights or early in September.
  • Purchase upgrades, like the guided R.I.P. Tour or the Express Pass, to the extent your budget allows. You’ll spend less time waiting in line and with 10 haunted houses, that’s important. On opening night, the wait for one of the haunted houses was listed as 180 minutes.
  • Arrive at the event opening and prepare for a long night.
  • If you’re visiting other parks in the Orlando area, consider scheduling a rest day or a pool day before heading to HHN. You’ll last longer!
  • Wear comfortable shoes and clothes. You will walk a lot and even in the latter part of October, Orlando is probably going to be humid. I saw lots of clubwear, high heels, fishnet stockings and leather and while the “Goth” style is a great vibe for a scary Halloween event, I highly recommend wearing what you know will be comfortable for eight hours on your feet. I saw a few people limping at the end of the night.

I recently traveled to San Juan, Puerto Rico, whose kind people, beautiful beaches and rich culture make it one of my top five travel destinations! Just a three hour flight from Florida, San Juan is a perfect weekend getaway for your next girl’s trip.

And bonus: as a territory of the United States, you don’t need a passport to immerse yourself in Puerto Rico’s sun, sand, tasty food and colorful culture.

Here are my favorite hotels, restaurants and activities to help you plan your next trip to Puerto Rico.

Where to Stay in Puerto Rico

Aire de Olive

There are a lot of hotels to choose from in Puerto Rico, however, you can’t go wrong with a beachfront luxury boutique property. Located in Isla Verde, the hotel is known for its attention to detail and sustainable practices. The rooms have wooden furnishings and earthy elements in them too. Be sure not to miss out on the hotel’s infinity pool and definitely make a reservation for KUMO, an on-site Asian fusion restaurant. I suggest spending an hour in the pool, freshening up for dinner and then going to KUMO – it’s a great way to end any night in Puerto Rico.

Caribe Hilton

For those loyal Hilton Honors members, Caribe Hilton is an exquisite property in San Juan. This isn’t your standard hotel as it spans across nine acres and is located right along the beach. Choose from a standard room or suite for the duration of your stay and enjoy on-site amenities including an ocean-front pool and full-service spa.

Hotel Rumbao

If you plan on spending a lot of time in Old San Juan, then Hotel Rumbao, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel, is a great option. It’s located steps away from the district’s shopping, dining, and historic sites and is a pet-friendly property if you plan on bringing your furry friends to Puerto Rico. The hotel is equipped with an outdoor pool, on-site restaurant and fitness center so you have everything right at your fingertips for those days you just want to stay in and relax.

Make Your Own Souvenir: LAU Pottery Studio

I’ve always wanted to go to a ceramics studio and make my own pottery and that’s exactly what I did. I figured there’s no better time or place to try something new than while on vacation. I found LAU Pottery Studio on Instagram and she had rave reviews so I gave it a try. During the class, I made a heart-shaped pinch pot (so cute) and painted it myself. The studio itself was so cute and it was such a personal experience that I’d do it again in a heartbeat.

Take a Walking Tour of Old San Juan

You can’t go on a trip to Puerto Rico without visiting Old San Juan. While you can just walk around yourself, it’s even better to have a tour guide. Not only do they know all the best spots, but also have a wealth of knowledge about the history of the area and culture. I used Turismo Borincano when I was in Puerto Rico and I can’t recommend them enough. My tour guide, Gloria, was super nice, insightful and even took us to all of the picturesque spots so I could get my Insta-worthy photos.

Go on a Cacao Tour

A more unique experience you’ll find in Puerto Rico is a cacao tour. As a chocolate lover, I was ecstatic to actually visit the place where cacao beans grow and chocolate is made. It’s a bit far out from Old San Juan and Isla Verde so it’s helpful to have a car, but it’s definitely worth the drive. On the two hour tour at Semila, you’ll be able to see how chocolate is made from start to finish. The experience ends by having a chocolate tasting session where you’ll be guided on how to eat chocolate the right way to really make it a full sensory experience.

Head to the Beach

Luscious trees, white sand and a clear blue water beach.

The best time to visit Puerto Rico is when the weather is nice and outside of hurricane season so you can go to the beach — that’s essentially any month between December and June. You can still visit during the traditional summer months, but you’ll want to check the weather a week or two from your planned trip time to make sure everything looks good to go.

There are plenty of beaches to choose from across the island but Condado Beach and Flamenco Beach are two popular picks for fluffy sand, calm waves and overall good vibes. Don’t forget to lather up on sunscreen before heading out too because the sun is strong in Puerto Rico.

Where to Eat in Puerto Rico

Verde Mesa was my favorite restaurant I ate at during my trip to Puerto Rico. From the moment I stepped inside, it felt like I was instantly transported into someone’s home for mealtime. This restaurant is unique because it’s one of the first farm to table restaurants in Old San Juan and has a robust menu filled with locally sourced ingredients from farmers all across the island. If you make it over to Verde Mesa (which I strongly suggest you do), you must order the Verde Mesa Rice which is the restaurant’s signature dish.

Casilda Cocina Creativa

As a foodie, I think there’s really no better way to get a feel for a place than by trying the food. Casilda Cocina Creativa in Cataño is a more casual, laid-back spot with a diverse menu. On the menu, you’ll find everything from steak and lobster to risotto and gnocchi so whether you’re craving something more meaty or a savory pasta dish, you’ll find them both here. After your meal, don’t forget to head up to the rooftop for a drink and some exquisite views.

You’ll want to bring both cash and cards with you to Puerto Rico because some restaurants and attractions only take one form of payment. You may also find that signal is weak in some areas so cash will be the only accepted form of payment sometimes.

Cocina al Fondo

Vegetables and potatoes on a intricate dinner plate.

Another notable mention is Cocina al Fondo which is in San Juan and features a menu carefully curated by James Beard award-winning chef Natalia Vallejo. The menu features dishes with food sourced from local farmers and fisherman and each item has a unique twist for a flavor explosion in your mouth. Since I don’t eat meat often, I ordered the vegetarian dish which was mouthwatering good and left my heart and stomach full.

Found primarily in Mexico and the Caribbean, all-inclusive resorts are a terrific option for families — but not all are the same. As a frequent visitor to all-inclusives, I’ve learned that choosing the right type is key to a successful trip.

Following are several categories of all-inclusive family resorts – with some recommended choices – to help you select the kind that best fits your family’s needs.

You can choose an all-inclusive family-friendly resort based on things such as:

  • What does it include? Does it work for all ages?
  • Are there a wide variety of kid-centered amenities?
  • What type of family amenities, activities & entertainment exist?
  • Are there any adult/grandparent amenities (or quieter/tranquil spots for those who need them)
  • Does it work for your budget (entry-level, luxury, ultra luxury)
  • What’s the dining like?
  • Would a resort with both à la carte & all-inclusive plans be better?

Resorts typically vary by:

  • Age Policies and Restrictions
  • Primary Target Audience
  • Activities and Entertainment
  • Location and Environment
  • Dining Options
  • Accommodation Options
  • Extra Perks

SheBuysTravel Tip: Skip the airport stress — Lyft’s On-Time Pickup Promise guarantees your scheduled ride shows up within 10 minutes of your pickup time. If it doesn’t? You’ll get Lyft Cash. Sometimes, of course, you can find a lodging option that combines more than one offering. Be sure the one that’s most important to your group and your goal is the one that leads the way, no matter what the location. These considerations all help to make the choice of an all-inclusive one that effectively meets your family’s needs in the best way possible.
