This trip was hosted. All opinions are entirely my own.

Only 15 miles from Bellingham, Washington, stands Cobblestone Hotel & Suites, a family-friendly hotel in the small town of Lynden. This comfortable refuge offers an indoor pool, complimentary hot breakfast and other amenities to make traveling with kids a breeze.

On a recent visit, I used the Cobblestone Hotel as a base camp for visiting the many attractions in the region. I explored the Dutch-themed town of Lynden with its delightful bakery and expansive playground, then took in the sights in Bellingham.

  • Centrally located to attractions. The Cobblestone Hotel and Suites is close to the region’s best parks, waterparks, museums, playgrounds, whale watching cruises and family farms. A five-minute drive takes visitors to the charming heart of Lynden, while downtown Bellingham lies a mere 15 miles away. The hotel is only five miles from the Canadian border.
  • Convenient amenities. Hotel amenities serve families on the go, from the on-site guest laundry to the small convenience store by the lobby. My favorite: the 24-hour free, self-serve Starbucks coffee station.
  • Spacious rooms. The Cobblestone offers a variety of rooms with good separation of space.

SheBuysTravel Tip: Too tired to go out to eat? Find microwaveable entrees, pizzas and ice cream in the hotel’s convenience store. It even provides a self-service pizza oven!

I spent most of my time at the Cobblestone planning my adventures in the region. Downtown Lynden is full of small shops and restaurants, including the Lynden Dutch Bakery. I especially enjoyed the Lynden Heritage Museum.

Rooms at the Cobblestone Hotel

My 348-square-foot king studio felt spacious enough for a family of four. It featured a king bed separated by a wall from the seating area, which held a sleeper sofa, a coffee table and a TV. Another TV hung over the work station near the foot of the bed.

The bathroom featured a large vanity with a sink and a tub/shower combination. Complimentary amenities included hand soap and wall-mounted Archive shampoo, conditioner and shower gel.

Every room features a coffee maker, a microwave and a refrigerator. I especially liked the storage cubbies, dresser and ample floor space for organizing gear.

Included Amenities:

  • 2 large flat-screen TVs
  • Coffeemaker
  • Microwave and refrigerator
  • Sleeper sofa
  • Pillow menu
  • Complimentary wifi
  • Desk/workstation
  • Complimentary breakfast
  • Pets welcome ($25 fee)

Starbucks coffee is available 24/7 at the self-serve coffee station by the lobby, which also has tea and cocoa. If you prefer Woods Coffee, a coffee shop is a few hundred yards from the hotel.

On-site Dining at the Cobblestone Hotel

Wissota Chophouse, the Cobblestone Hotel’s on-site dinner restaurant, doubles as the breakfast area in the mornings. Stone, wood and unfussy furnishings give the intimate space a casual, Northwest vibe. Large windows open onto a small patio with a fire pit surrounded by Adirondack chairs.

The Wissota offers a menu full of steaks, seafood, soup and salads, plus a variety of sides and shareables. I made dinner from the extensive shareables portion of the menu. The crab cakes and Nueske’s Bacon Bleu Cheese Fries tempted me, but I settled on the steak flatbread, with caramelized onions, mushrooms, gruyere, smoked bleu cheese and balsamic glaze. It pairs perfectly with a mocktail. The restaurant features a full bar.

SheBuysTravel Tip: When it’s open, the restaurant also provides room service.

Local Restaurants

  • Don’t leave Lynden without indulging in a treat from the Lynden Dutch Bakery. It’s a local favorite with an assortment of cookies, brownies, pastries and more. The bakery offers limited gluten-free options, but I can vouch for their yumminess.
  • Swing by Graze and Gather for grab-and-go dining options, sandwiches, wraps, bowls, salads and baked goods. The bistro is only a few hundred yards from the hotel.
  • Located half a mile from the hotel, Coconut Kenny’s Pizza serves pan pizza, salads and a few starters, such as nachos and wings. Pizza with a gluten-free crust is also available.

Places to Play

  • The popular Lynden City Park offers an extensive playground and a shallow stream for kids to play in. For level, easy hiking trails through a forest, a playground and more, check out Berthusen Park. Both are less than 3 miles from the Cobblestone Hotel.
  • Storefronts from the past reveal history in an engaging way at the Lynden Heritage Museum. Walk through a 1950s ice cream parlor, peek into a pioneer home, barbershop, printing office and many other vintage businesses. Don’t miss the basement, where you’ll find a stagecoach, surreys with fringe on top and other horse-drawn vehicles.
  • Explore the shops and restaurants in downtown Lynden. Windmills of all sizes dot the street.
  • San Juan Cruises offers whale watching tours of the Salish Sea. Board the boat in Bellingham, then spend the day watching for orcas and other wildlife. A naturalist on board makes it a fun and educational experience.
