“Would you like to go on a wine trip?”
My summer opened with this question. I hadn’t ever visited a wine country before, and Temecula Valley, California presented itself as the ideal place to initiate such a trip. What did I know about wines, though? I’m no stranger to uncorking a bottle or two, but I’ll fail to elaborate on said bottle or go on about the grapes harvested to create the cool, crisp vintage of an authentic Pinot de Grigio (it’s Pinot de Grigio…right?). Suffice to say, I felt hesitant to go on the trip, having quite an elementary grasp on wine knowledge. To my relief, I found Temecula to be welcoming to all visitors no matter their wine comprehension.
If you’d like to deepen your appreciation for the productions of wine, or are just looking for the hot spots to catch a cool buzz with some gal pals, here are some of Temecula’s most sought-after wineries.

Wilson Creek Winery

Founded in 2000, Wilson Creek Winery is family-operated, with a focus on a welcoming atmosphere for all guests, including little ones. In addition to tastings and seasonal menus, Wilson Creek offers live music that families can enjoy while exploring the grounds.
Something unique I learned about this vineyard: they care for the land with regenerative farming – a science-based approach that puts the ecosystem first, built on the belief that everything in nature connects and operates as self-sustaining. Helmed by Vineyard Manager Greg Pennyroyal, who brings over 30 years of experience in plant research and farming. “You learn to read nature out here,” he notes, detailing the intricate balance of science and harvest.
Best for: Families with small children who need outdoor, runaround space

Ponte Winery

This boutique vineyard stands out for its crisp wines and relaxed atmosphere, as the Ponte family intended when they opened in 2003. As locals will inform you, the Ponte family have a prominent history in Temecula, with their roots (pun intended) spanning over 40 years in the valley.
If you’re looking to stay in town, The Ponte Vineyard Inn sits right on the winery property. During my time at this inn, I quite enjoyed waking up to the view of vineyards right before taking in breakfast. The view will follow you, as everywhere you’re surrounded by well-maintained gardens, which makes for a quiet atmosphere before heading out for tastings.
Best for: Small gatherings, couples
SheBuysTravel Tip: As much as you may enjoy the evening California breeze, make sure to close your patio door to avoid unwelcomed vineyard critters.
Leoness Cellars

One of my favorite memories of this trip: exploring the grounds at Leoness Cellars, with a view of the rolling hills and vineyards, good food and good company. We enjoyed an impressive tasting, alongside fresh salads, roasted vegetables, and perfectly cooked meats (ostrich…check). Their event space made for the perfect evening, with a fantastic view of the iconic California golden sunset. Visitors can take guided tours of the estate vineyards and winemaking facilities or enjoy tastings of their award-winning wines.
Best for: Group trips, outdoor tastings
Altísima Winery

Altísima Winery is one of my top picks in Temecula for a group wine tasting. There’s an emphasis on hospitality and approachability that I gravitated towards, as if I could sip on one of their batches of Sangiovese and not have the presence of imposter-syndrome creep up (did I swish my glass enough times?). After tasting, visitors are encouraged to enjoy their on-site Gaspar’s Restaurant for fresh dishes that pair perfectly with the wine and an outside view you’ll not want to miss.
Best for: Wine tastings with the gals, lunch with friends
Danza del Sol Winery

Winemaker Justin Knight understands that the marriage of art and science yields quality wine. With an old-world approach in a new-age atmosphere, Danza de Sol leans into the Mediterranean identity of Temecula.
Categorized as a boutique winery, Danza del Sol offers visitors a welcoming tasting space with stunning views. Their direct-to-consumer approach allows for a more intimate relationship with repeat guests, with wine clubs, monthly gatherings and events for all to come together and experience their handcrafted wines.
As a first-timer, wineries can feel intimidating, especially when surrounded by wine savants. The staff at Danza del Sol make it their mission to provide a welcoming, casual space for all. Here, I felt I could relax and not feel so self-aware of my elementary vino knowledge.
Best for: Casual wine enthusiasts, group trips
Wiens Cellars

Another family-owned winery best known for its friendly service and commitment to hard work and passion, Wiens Cellars works their magic to fit the spirit of Temecula into each vintage.
Winemaker Joseph Wiens began producing wine in 2010, focusing on small vineyards that capture Temecula’s unique character, with a skill for making wine approachable for all tastes. Partnered with SoCal native Brian Marquez, who has mastered adding a local twist to classic wines without losing quality.
What a special treat to enjoy a wine tasting inside their barrel room, where I discovered that I prefer Cabernet Franc! The welcoming atmosphere makes it a perfect place for both first-time tasters and longtime wine lovers to relax and enjoy good wine.
Best for: Indoor tastings with an approachable setting
Doffo Winery

Wine with a side of motorcycles? Let’s roll! This family-owned vineyard has a touching personal history rooted in immigration and passion. Inspired by his Argentine and Italian heritage, Marcelo Doffo founded Doffo Winery in 1997. The winery began on a small plot of land and has grown through hard work and passion. The Doffo family runs every part of the business, from tending the vines to pouring in the tasting room.
What makes this winery unique is their collection of vintage motorcycles. With over 200 bikes on display in their barrel room, the Doffo family eagerly share their passion of winemaking, bike collecting, and family-oriented hospitality.
Best for: A day out with the family, vintage lovers
Peltzer Winery

Another special place, where family business thrives in a country setting. The Peltzer family has been farming for over 100 years, and in 2016 they opened Peltzer Winery on their working farm. They handle everything from growing the grapes to crafting the wines, keeping quality and tradition at the heart of their work. Rather than a standard tasting room, Peltzer winery offers visitors an opportunity to transport to an atmosphere that leans more into cozy, farmland chic. The Peltzer family encourages visitors to kick up their cowboy boots and enjoy the local sips outdoors.
Fun fact: Charles Peltzer purchased 20 acres of citrus grove in 1913 located in Anaheim – later sold to the one and only Mr. Walt Disney!
Best for: Outdoor tastings with a casual vibe
South Coast Winery

Mere steps from Ponte Vineyard Inn, South Coast Winery stands as one of Temecula’s oldest and most popular wineries. It has grown into a full-service winery with a tasting room, restaurant, and beautiful vineyard views. The winery makes a variety of wines, all crafted on-site. Visitors can enjoy wine tastings and tours. You may even rent out the space for special events such as weddings or outdoor family celebrations. You can further make yourself at home, as these vineyards are also home to their resort, where guests can enjoy its wide-open spaces, well-kept grounds, and friendly staff.
Best for: Small group settings, gals getaway
Callaway Vineyard & Winery

This family-owned winery has solidified their legacy in the valley, with years of vineyard tending and hospitality. Visitors can walk through the vineyards, enjoy the views, and relax in the tasting room or on the outdoor patio. Calloway Vineyard & Winery also hosts events like weddings and private gatherings, making it a friendly spot for wine lovers and anyone looking for a lovely day out.
Fun fact: On July 9, 1976, for the U.S. bicentennial, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip raised a glass to the President at a New York City luncheon—and the only wine served was Callaway’s 1974 White Riesling!
Best for: Group trips with an approachable setting
When to go
While I did go in the summer, some early hours often feel too hot to walk along the vineyards. You’ll want to aim for spring or fall to maximize chances of great outdoor weather.
How to get there
San Diego and Los Angeles are the two closest major cities, with about an hour drive from San Diego and 90 minutes from Los Angeles.
