During the day, SeaWorld Orlando delights guests with underwater adventures and adrenaline filled roller coasters. As the sunset sets across the theme park during the spooky season, the shadows hold torrid tales that snarl guests in their grasp. During my recent visit to the 2025 Howl-O-Scream event, havoc was everywhere and I was lucky to escape unscathed.

Adults Only

While daytime offerings are meant to be family-friendly, SeaWorld Orlando’s nighttime experience is for adults. It is more than the frightening aspects to this event. Themes, visuals and even the overall vibe is meant for an older crowd.

From couples looking to scream the night away to friends wanting a spirited night out, SeaWorld Orlando’s Howl-O-Scream offers a little bit of everything. In its fifth year, the creative team amplified the experience with new shows, haunted houses and scarezones.

Look towards the flames and prepare to enter Havoc’s realm, if you dare.

  • When to Go: Howl-O-Scream 2025 runs now through November 1, 2025 on select nights. Doors open at 6:15 and the event begins at 7:00 p.m.
  • What to Do: The event includes five haunted houses, six scare zones, five themed bars, shows and more.
  • Ticket prices vary

I received tickets to attend Howl-O-Scream from SeaWorld Orlando.

SheBuysTravel Tip: Skip the airport stress — Lyft’s On-Time Pickup Promise guarantees your scheduled ride shows up within 10 minutes of your pickup time. If it doesn’t? You’ll get Lyft Cash. No Where to Hide in These Haunted Houses

Over the years, I have learned to calm my fears in haunted houses. At SeaWorld’s Howl-O-Scream, that concept is tested. The scenes are not necessarily grotesque, but they are intense.

From hanging obstacles to flashing lights, every wicked twist and turn is designed to make me feel disoriented. Not knowing where to look makes that jump scare more intense.

At this year’s event, the returning haunted houses are Water’s Edge Wellness Center and Farm 51. Although the “wellness center” might be a misnomer, the scareactors are amazing. They really get into character. That moment of calm makes the scream even more intense.

The new houses are The Collector’s Curse, Rave Yard and The Widow’s Nest. The Rave Yard is a stunning house. From stepping through the graveyard gate till the music fades, this experience proves haunted can be captivating. This concept would be well served outside the seasonal event.

SheBuysTravel Tip: Opt for the Front of Line Fear Extreme. While wait times are manageable, the majority of the evening should be spent having fun versus standing in line. It is worth the extra cost.

Scarezones Are Not for the Timid

Fake bones on barrel

SeaWorld’s looping path around the water makes its scarezones unavoidable. While there are safe havens along the way, every twist, turn and shadow has a person waiting to pounce. I have learned to never carry my cocktail while walking around the event. One spilled drink is too many.

This year’s scarezones are Ashes Forgotten, Blood Light District, Woodrot Hollow, Trailer Park Tragedy, Cannibal Horror and Echoes in the Glass. The Blood Light District is a returning favorite. These vampires are still thirsty for new partners.

I found the Trailer Park Tragedy area quite entertaining. The scare actors really took their roles seriously and were willing to interact with guests. It was less about causing people to scream versus having a good time at the event.

SheBuysTravel Tip: Don’t want to be scared? SeaWorld sells a special necklace that alerts scare actors to tone down their approach.

Interactive Bars Are the Ultimate Watering Holes

two colorful cocktails

One of the ways that I survive Halloween theme parks events is with a cocktail. At SeaWorld’s Howl-O-Scream, the interactive bars turn a quick stop into a reason to linger. There might be shots and blood bags around the park, but I cannot resist a bar stop.

At this year’s event, there are three interactive bars. They are Scorchline, The Butcher’s Block Tavern, Carnevil, Space Gate 3 and Tormented.

Tormented is a returning favorite and this year it did not disappoint. The bartenders shake a strong cocktail. I recommend ordering the 5 Years of Fear Cocktail. The lemon ginger vodka with tangy Midori is both refreshing and spicy. Plus, the vibrant green color captivates.

For the cocktail fan, each of the interactive bars have a signature sipper. Although I did not do a bar crawl, it would be a great option for a group. Sharing a few beverages throughout the night would be wonderful.

SheBuysTravel Tip: Additional specialty cocktails are served at some of the food marketplaces. Be sure to download the SeaWorld Orlando app for complete details.

Don’t Be Frightened by Terrifically Terrifying Food

Theme park food has become a huge draw. This year, SeaWorld’s culinary team wove its themes into the creative, complex and delicious offerings.

This year’s menu features favorites like a Skull Pretzel, Swiderfries and Nachos. While the standard fare is good, the global cuisine is where SeaWorld chefs’ shine. The Dangerous Pork Egg Rolls served over Pad Thai noodles is a hearty meal with just the right amount of spice.

Even the traditional burger gets an upgrade. Made with bison, the Ripper’s Revenge tastes like a pub burger with its chevre, arugula and vampire blood jam.

Overall, I appreciate that Howl-O-Scream’s food offerings balance familiar dishes with some bold flavors. It might push some people out of their comfort zone, but it is not as daring as previous year’s creepy, crawling protein options.

SheBuysTravel Tip: For couples and groups, it is smart to buy the Tasting Lanyard. The $75 Premium option includes five entrees and two beverages.

Sit a Spell and Watch a Show

When time is limited, some people skip the shows. I built extra time into my night to ensure that I saw the performances.

This year, the shows are Throttle, Hellzapoppin Presents: The Grave Danger Thrill Show, Monster Stomp and Deadly Rhythm. The fan-favorite Monster Stomp is always my choice for  mid-evening experience break. The visuals bring the heat, but the air-conditioned environment is refreshing.

This year, the new Throttle show puts Havoc, the new face of fear, front and center. From the motorcycles revving their engines to the impressive choreography, this high energy event was like a mini-concert. The gigantic flames igniting the night sky served as my beacon to find all the action.

SheBuysTravel Tip: Get to Howl-O-Scream early to enjoy the new Deadly Rhythm show at Scorchline Bar. Those beats are infectious.

As the sun sets and the fog rises, I feel the frights build and the urge to scream. Halloween Horror Nights 2025 is full of intense and unique experiences. This year’s theme proved that the creative team pushed the boundaries. While the event’s catch phrase warns to “never go alone,” this time, I embraced my solo status and found a way to face my fears.

This specially ticketed event at Universal Studios Orlando, which runs on select nights through November 2, 2025, offers a variety of scares:

  • 10 haunted houses
  • 4 scare zones
  • 2 shows
  • An array of specialty food booths and specialty merch.

Here’s my assessment of the scares and how I survived each one.

El Artista: A Spanish Haunting: A Stunningly Beautiful Haunting Tale

Before choosing to enter the alluring manor, I had to remind myself, art is in the eye of the beholder. With the El Arista house, the transformation of the art and the artist made me question the thin line between inspiration and insanity. Fiction rooted in truth is the scariest story to be told.

While the jump scares waited to emerge from window pains and darkened corners, the intricacies captivated my attention and lured me with their beauty. If I had an opportunity to see this house with the lights on, it would be as stunning as a museum.

How I Survived

Although the concept is quite disturbing, the detailed design took me to a place that I love, a museum. With that reference, I could put aside the creepy factor and focus on the artistic concept.

Did I succumb to one of the tortured souls waiting in darkened corners? Yes, I did. But, keeping a familiar, cherished memory in mind helped my screams feel a little less frightful.

Five Nights at Freddy’s: Best Interpretation of a Theme

From my kids’ playing the game years ago to the recent movies, the popular Five Nights at Freddy’s concept was familiar. What I did not expect in this haunted house is to be captivated by the animatronics. Created by Jim Henson’s Creature Company, those signature characters made me think they were friends, not foes.

The haunted house captured what I remember from those classic childhood pizza joints. Blending imagination with fun, there were plenty of potentially happy moments that quickly brought a false sense of ease. That moment of belief let my guard down and the scares became more intensified.

How I Survived

Even though I had a few moments of laughter, Five Nights at Freddy’s lingered in my memories long after I exited. If I had the opportunity to do a second or third run, this one would be my top choice. It tapped into my childhood memories, which kept me from being too scared.

Dolls: Let’s Play Dead: You Will Never Look at a Dollhouse the Same

Sometimes the Halloween Horror Nights creative team takes a different approach to its creations. In the Doll House, guests shrink in size and become one of the toys. Even before walking into the first room, I felt the creepy factor. I prepared for the wrath from the doll that I misplaced all those years ago.

As I moved from room to room, each visual got creepier. Although it was not demonic, the twisted toys seemed to come from a child’s worst nightmare. This idea is not as simple as just a doll whose head has been shaved. These creatures are worse than the items plucked from the trash.

How I Survived

Since the Dolls house transformed all those childhood toys, I simply reminded myself that this experience was make-believe. Even though the red coils radiating heat made me think differently about that Easy Bake Oven, nothing is real. At the same time, I will ever again leave something precious near a heat source.

The Horrors of The Wyatt Sicks: Even Non-WWE Fans Will Be Impressed

A few scenes will leave people speechless. Without giving away all the secrets, the television screen portion will have people mesmerized by the impressive visual. It is creepy in the most entertaining way.

How I Survived

The key to my survival of this HHN house was to put myself in the mindset of walking through a television studio. Just like a good commercial breaks up an intense plot, each staged scene had a build-up. Those moments allowed me to prepare for the jump scares waiting in the next room.

As for that rocking chair, it might be time to sit a spell. The lamplight will lead the way.

Jason Universe: Unrelenting Classic Horror

Jason horror character

The first horror movie that I ever saw was Friday the 13th. Even just the first notes of that song can make me recoil. In this haunted house, the frights hit from the first moment and never let up until the exit.

For anyone who remembers Insidious from a previous Halloween Horror Nights will understand how this Jason Universe experience never stops. From start to finish, the man in the hockey mask is everywhere.

How I Survived

In the best possible way, it had me jumping at every turn. Even when I could expect that jump scare, I was off kilter. But, I anticipated this before even walking into the experience. More importantly, it was my last house of the night. At that point, I was a little more numb. This haunted house is the one that will get even the most seasoned HHN guest.

Terrifier: Not Worth the Hype

Terrifier clown haunted house

Anyone who follows Halloween Horror Nights knows that the Terrifier house is the most extreme offering that Universal’s creative team has ever done. From intense smells to the “wet” experience, it is unlike anything previously offered.

While Art the Clown is everywhere this year, this house left me wishing that I had not put on the poncho. Yes, the movie is about extreme gore, but many of this house’s moments seemed gratuitous. I felt that it was more about being grossed out versus being scared.

How I Survived

The best way I can encourage anyone to attempt the Terrifier house is to just know that it is going to be gross. Similar to the tasteless potty humor joke, it is about the reaction to the moment versus the moment itself. When you know it is all make-believe, that sprinkling on the way out is not as disgusting.

This trip was hosted. All opinions expressed are entirely my own.

Universal Orlando began celebrating Halloween Horror Nights in 1991. That’s more than three decades of trying to outdo the blood, gore, screams and scares from the year before.

After attending opening night of this year’s Halloween Horror Nights event, I can assure you it is one of the bloodiest, goriest, most gruesome to date. I screamed in terror more times than I can count.

This year, every house was one I couldn’t wait to experience again. But, I loved them for different reasons. To help you prepare for your visit, I’ve ranked them based on how scary, disgusting and fun they each were (because the best houses are a combination of all three).

What is Halloween Horror Nights?

Halloween Horror Nights takes place each year at Universal Orlando’s Universal Studios Florida park and at Universal Studios Hollywood. Both events are similar, but the lineup of haunted houses, scare zones and live shows differ between the two locations.

This year’s Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Orlando features five haunted houses based on popular movies, video games and streaming shows and five original houses dreamt up by Universal’s twisted (and possibly tormented) creative team.

This separately-ticketed event usually runs from late August through early November, so there is plenty of time to plan a visit with your “scream squad.”

Here’s the thing, which house is “best” and which is “worst” is totally subjective and I would argue is not the best way to describe each house.

We all visit HHN for different reasons. Some people love seeing their favorite pop culture properties come to life, while others want to test just how much blood and guts they can handle before they have to look away.

Rather than ranking the houses from best to worst, I’ve assigned scores between 1 and 10 for how scary, gory, fun and smelly each house is so you have a good idea of what you are walking into before you cross each terrifying threshold.

Five Nights at Freddy’s

  • Scary: 5 out of 10
  • Gory: 2 out of 10
  • Fun: 10 out of 10
  • Smelly: 0 out of 10
  • Trophy: Felt the most like walking through my TV screen and into a movie

Five Nights at Freddy’s is based on the hit video game and 2023 film of the same name. I recommend watching the film before you visit so you are familiar with the characters, but it follows the story of a security guard working the night shift at a defunct pizza place similar to Chuck E. Cheese.

Unfortunately, Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza is haunted by possessed animatronics in search of their next victim. It doesn’t take much to make me scream and I did plenty of it in this house, but it wasn’t particularly gory or terrifying because most of the scares come from the animatronic puppets.

Universal collaborated with Jim Henson’s Creature Shop to build the Freddy, Foxy, Bonnie, Chica and Cupcake puppets – some as big as eight feet tall – who are trying to murder you throughout the house. For fans of Five Nights at Freddy’s, like myself, getting to basically walk into the restaurant and become a character in the film was one of the highlights of my night.

El Artista: A Spanish Haunting

  • Scary: 6 out of 10
  • Gory: 4 out of 10
  • Fun: 5 out of 10
  • Smelly: 2 out of 10 (because they were good smells)
  • Trophy: The best use of possessed inanimate objects

Each year, there is a HHN house that is as beautiful as it is horrifying. This year, that house is El Artista: A Spanish Haunting. The facade is a late-1800s Spanish colonial manor with stained glass windows and from late 1800 overgrowth stained glass windows and archways associated with Gothic architecture.

SheBuysTravel Tip: If you think you smell flowers when you enter the conservatory, you’re right. Universal pumped in floral smells to fully immerse you in the experience.

The house comes to life as you walk through each room. I never thought I’d be scared of wisteria, journal pages or sculptures, but I was when they were trying to attack me! The deeper you venture into the manor, the more evil it becomes.

The Horrors of The Wyatt Sicks

A man with a bird mask and long hair in a haunted house.
Mercy the Buzzard, a member of the Wyatt Sicks.
  • Scary: 7 out of 10
  • Gory: 7 out of 10
  • Fun: 6 out of 10
  • Smelly: 0 out of 10
  • Trophy: The most likely to make you tear up

After experiencing The Horrors of The Wyatt Sicks, it jumped toward the top of my list, even though I had low expectations because it is based on WWE characters I am not very familiar with. It helped that I read up on the story of The Wyatt Sicks before my visit and I recommend you do the same.

This house was both scary and oddly emotional because The Wyatt Sicks, a real-life wrestling faction, formed as a tribute to the late Bray Wyatt, a wrestler who died in 2023. The house acts as a tribute to Bray Wyatt, with terrifying rooms featuring the group’s alter-egos, Uncle Howdy, Ramblin Rabbit, Mercy the Buzzard, Abby the Witch and Huskus the Pig.

Terrifier

  • Scary: 10 out of 10
  • Gory: 12 out of 10
  • Fun: 7 out of 10
  • Smelly: 10 out of 10
  • Trophy: The most likely to make you laugh and scream at the same time

I know enough about myself and the “Terrifier” films to know that I would not enjoy the off-the-charts blood and guts the franchise thrives on. But that doesn’t mean I disliked this house. Yes, it was as disgusting, wet and smelly (they really do pump disgusting smells into the house) as Universal claims, but it was also oddly hilarious.

Art the Clown – the murderous antagonist of the “Terrifier” movies – is beyond demented, but he just has so much fun doing it that you can’t help but laugh in between screams. If you want an idea of just how gory this house is, it has the most dead bodies of any HHN house ever created.

As you near the end of the house, you can choose to venture down a “dry path” or a “wet path.” If you choose the latter, you will definitely get wet (luckily, it’s only water) and you’ll be treated to one final jump scare from the film’s heroine that you don’t get on the dry path.

Jason Universe

Jason from "Friday the 13th" wielding a knife

  • Scary: 8 out of 10
  • Gory: 5 out of 10
  • Fun: 2 out of 10
  • Smelly: 0 out of 10
  • Trophy: The most scares per square foot

This house brings you face-to-hockey-mask with one of the most slashers of all time, Jason.  If you have a Jason-specific phobia, I cannot recommend this house less. The star of the “Friday the 13th” film franchise is literally lurking around every corner.

In fact, Universal stated that this house has the most scares per square foot of any house in HHN history. This house is relentless. At times, it feels as if Jason is coming at you from every direction at the same time (probably because he is). You’ll visit Camp Crystal Lake and Jason’s decrepit living quarters, giving this house a bit of a nostalgia factor for fans of the films.

Fallout

A radioactive creature in a haunted house
A radioactive creature in the “Fallout” house. Photo credit: Tarah Chieffi
  • Scary: 5 out of 10
  • Gory: 5 out of 10
  • Fun: 8 out of 10
  • Smelly: 0 out of 10
  • Trophy: Will get you the most excited for a second season

Similar to “Five Nights at Freddy’s,” the “Fallout” house began as a video game. It then became an Amazon Prime streaming series, and that iteration is what the house is based on. The short version is that “Fallout” follows survivors of a nuclear war. This haunted house recreates the various settings those who survived took to and the dangers they encountered.

SheBuysTravel Tip: Look for an Easter Egg for season two inside this house. There is a new character lurking in the shadows.

I didn’t find this house overly scary, but, as a huge fan of the show, that had more to do with how excited I was to see these characters again. The radioactive creatures and the menacing character known only as “the Ghoul” certainly gave me a fright that had me running toward safety.

Hatchet and Chains: Demon Bounty Hunters

A chain-wielding cowboy in a haunted house
Chains, a demon hunter, at Halloween Horror Nights. Photo credit: Tarah Chieffi
  • Scary: 8 out of 10
  • Gory: 8 out of 10
  • Fun: 6 out of 10
  • Smelly: 0 out of 10
  • Trophy: The most likely to make you feel like you’ve been caught in a shootout

I grew up watching westerns on tv with my grandparents. This house is like that but the good guys are a demon and a demon hunter (an unlikely pair, to say the least) and the bad guys are demons who have infiltrated an old western town and are possessing the townspeople by physically entering their mouths. It’s quite an unpleasant process to watch.

Hatchet and Chains: Demon Bounty Hunters was born out of a scene from last year’s Slaughter Sinema 2 house. This year, it got the full house treatment, complete with a demon horse, a train that barrels through the town and a shootout.

Dolls: Let’s Play Dead

A multi-headed doll in a haunted house
A multi-headed doll. Photo credit: Tarah Chieffi
  • Scary: 5 out of 10
  • Gory: 3 out of 10
  • Fun: 10 out of 10
  • Smelly: 0 out of 10
  • Trophy: The most likely to make you regret how you treated your dolls as a child

If you thought the haircuts you gave your dolls as a child were bad, it’s got nothing on what Lyla, the little girl who inspired this house, does to her play things. As you enter Dolls: Let’s Play Dead, you are shrunk down to the size of a doll to see just how Lyla likes to “play” with her toys. Think melted faces and missing (or extra!) body parts.

SheBuysTravel Tip: There are three guest activated triggers (or GATs) in this house. If you see a big red button, push it to trigger a special effect.

Because most of the scares came from dolls, this house wasn’t gross or terrifying, but it is still unnerving when a multi-headed doll jumps out at you or a doll with a melted face is screaming in pain.

Grave of Flesh

Walking into a grave at a haunted house

  • Scary: 7 out of 10
  • Gory: 6 out of 10
  • Fun: 3 out of 10
  • Smelly: 0 out of 10
  • Trophy: The nightmare you hope isn’t true about what happens when we die

We’ve all wondered what happens to us when we die and after experiencing Grave of Flesh, I sincerely hope what is depicted in this haunted house is not it. As you enter this house, you are walking into the Halmouth Cemetery (you can probably guess what that is meant to sound like). Oh, by the way, it’s your funeral.

After literally walking into your own grave and further into the depths of the underworld, you’ll encounter flesh-eating creatures who survive on the bodies buried in the cemetery..including your own. The tight, underground spaces (with skeletons reaching out of the walls) and hungry demons made this house one of the scariest of the night.

Galkin: Monsters of the North

  • Scary: 7 out of 10
  • Gory: 6 out of 10
  • Fun: 4 out of 10
  • Smelly: 0 out of 10
  • Trophy: Best use of a giant creature in a haunted house

Galkin: Monsters of the North was one of the houses that surprised me the most this year. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but the storytelling, scenery and, of course, scares pushed it much higher on my list than I anticipated.

With its focus on the winged, horned and wolf-like creatures common in Norse mythology, this house had some of the most jaw-dropping beasts of the entire event.

It was equal parts awe-inspiring and frightening and had my favorite finale moment of the night. I won’t spoil it, but let’s just say I was happy to run straight out of that house after seeing this creature.

What is the scariest house at HHN 2025?

Hands down, Terrifier was the most, well, terrifying house at Halloween Horror Nights this year. This house knows your limits, and could not care less. Each scene is more gruesome (not to mention wet and stinky) than the last and Art the Clown’s killing methods are truly terrifying (but I applaud his originality).

What’s funny is this house is also a fan favorite this year. Whether or not you like the movies, Art the Clown will wriggle his way deep into your heart with his sadistic-yet-endearing demeanor.

What is the least scary house at HHN 2025?

Evil animatronic bear in a haunted house

Though I would say Five Nights at Freddy’s is the least scary of the 10 houses at Halloween Horror Nights this year, it was among my favorite houses of the night, as well as many other guests I spoke with.

SheBuysTravel Tip: If you want to ensure you see all 10 houses in one night, opt for a RIP Tour or purchase the Express ticket add-on so you can skip the standby lines. Regular lines can grow as long as two hours or more for popular houses.

What it lacked in blood and guts, it made up for with fan-service moments from the film and frequent appearances from the large-as-life animatronics who entertained families at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza before they became possessed.

Imagine walking directly out of your hotel and into Universal Orlando’s newest park, Universal Epic Universe. Or what if you could surprise your kids with a space themed room that makes them feel like an astronaut?

You can make those dreams (and more) come true when you stay in one of the three new hotels that opened alongside Universal Orlando’s newest hotel, Universal Epic Universe.

Hotel stays were hosted. All opinions expressed are entirely my own.

Universal Stella Nova Resort, Universal Terra Luna Resort and Universal Helios Grand Hotel each have unique theming, amenities and pricing that may affect which one fits your family’s travel style.

I’ve checked them all out to help you choose the right hotel for your next family vacation to Epic Universe.

SheBuysTravel Tip: Skip the airport stress — Lyft’s On-Time Pickup Promise guarantees your scheduled ride shows up within 10 minutes of your pickup time. If it doesn’t? You’ll get Lyft Cash. You can schedule up to 90 days in advance and even lock in your rate. Use code SBT25 to save 25% off ONE scheduled ride to the airport.

Epic Universe Hotel Perks

Universal Orlando offers most of the same perks at its new hotels as it does at its existing properties. All Universal hotel guests can enjoy the following:

  • One-hour early admission to one or more of Universal’s parks, including Epic Universe. (based on a rotating calendar)
  • Complimentary shuttle bus or water taxi transportation between your hotel and Universal’s parks. Some hotels also offer a walking path.
  • Resortwide charging privileges.
  • Complimentary merchandise delivery to your hotel.

Aside from that new hotel smell, the biggest perk of staying at one of these properties is that they are much closer to Epic Universe than Universal’s existing hotels. In fact, you can see at least some of the park from each property, while Universal’s other hotels are a 15-to-20-minute shuttle ride away.

Are you ready to explore more Epic Universe? Let us inspire you!

Universal Stella Nova Resort

  • Starting price: Less than $150 per night for stays of four nights or longer and around $200 per night for one-night stays
  • Distance to Epic Universe: 10-minute walk or a five-minute shuttle ride
  • Best for: Budget-conscious families with younger kids

Walking into Universal Stella Nova Resort feels like entering a spaceport in a far-off galaxy. The curved walls, modern furniture and starry-sky artwork add to the futuristic feel.

All 750 guest rooms have two queen beds and sleep up to four guests. Stella Nova’s space theme continues into the guest rooms, with galactic murals behind the beds, and modern furniture and fixtures with sleek curves.

The hotel has a 10,000-square-foot resort-style pool, hot tub, poolside lounge, kids’ splash pad and a fire pit. There’s also a sandy beach area, plentiful loungers and umbrellas and outdoor games.

Other amenities include a quick-service eatery and coffee shop serving Starbucks coffee, lobby bar, 24-hour fitness center, arcade, gift shop and a coin-operated laundry area.

Universal Terra Luna Resort

  • Starting price: Less than $150 per night for stays of four nights or longer and around $200 per night for one-night stays
  • Distance to Epic Universe: 20-minute walk, but there is no dedicated walking path and you will cross busy streets. The shuttle ride is a quick five minutes.
  • Best for: Budget-conscious families with older kids

Universal Terra Luna Resort design and color scheme are more subtle than Stella Nova’s. The lobby has a modern feel with natural, earthy tones, and guest rooms are mostly blue and white, with planetary murals behind the bed.

Terra Luna’s pool area is similar to Stella Nova’s, but it differs in two ways that may matter to families. Terra Luna has no splash pad for younger kids to play in, but it does have a zero-entry area where younger kids can splash around and a larger hot tub than Stella Nova.

Terra Luna’s other amenities are essentially the same as Stella Nova’s. You’ll find dining, a fitness center, an arcade, a gift shop and a coin-operated laundry. The menus at the poolside lounge, lobby bar and quick-service eatery differ, but otherwise the offerings are the same.

Universal Helios Grand Hotel

  • Starting price: Around $400 for stays of four nights or more and closer to $550 per night for a one-night stay (though during busy times, the rate can climb to nearly $800 per night).
  • Distance to Epic Universe: There is a dedicated security entrance in the lobby that leads directly into the back of Epic Universe.
  • Best for: Families who want to splurge on the ultimate Epic Universe experience

Universal Helios Grand Hotel is a 500-room hotel that combines Mediterranean design with thematic elements derived from astronomy and mythology.

The hotel’s dedicated entrance means you can skip the long security line at the front of the park, and you are closer to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic and Dark Universe than guests who come through the main entrance.

Several of the guest rooms at Helios Grand have theme park views, though they come at a premium. It’s not the most financially prudent decision I’ve ever made, but I booked one of these rooms for my kids’ first visit later this year. Opening the drapes to reveal panoramic views of Epic Universe is a once-in-a-lifetime experience I want them to have.

SheBuysTravel Tip: Use the in-room tablet to program a morning wake-up routine that combines lights, music and the drapes opening automatically.

In addition to a grab-and-go eatery, coffee shop and poolside lounge, Helios Grand offers a full-service Mediterranean restaurant (with theme park views if you dine al fresco), a rooftop bar with views of Epic Universe and 24-hour room service.

The pool area features a sandy beach, zero-entry area, underwater speakers, poolside cabana rentals, a hot tub, poolside movies, and daily games and activities. Indoor amenities include a 24-hour fitness center, a gift shop and an arcade.

Choosing the Best Epic Universe Hotel for Your Family

Who should stay at Helios Grand Hotel?

  • If money is no object, staying at Universal Helios Grand Hotel is without a doubt worth it.
  • The views and convenience of being so close to Epic Universe cannot be beat.
  • In addition to convenience, Helios Grand is the only full service hotel of the three properties near Epic Universe.
Large hotel pool with palm trees, beach chairs and a colorful hotel in the background at Universal Stella Nova Resort.

Who should stay at Stella Nova?

  • Stella Nova is walkable and has a splash pad. These make it more appealing for families with younger kids and those who prefer to walk versus taking the shuttle.
  •  If you have kids (or theme park nerds) in your travel party, I would also recommend Stella Nova for the more conspicuous space theme.

Who should stay at Terra Luna?

  • Families with tweens and teens may feel more at home at Terra Luna.
  • If you value a larger hot tub, subdued aesthetic and a short shuttle ride to the parks, you might prefer Terra Luna.

Regardless of which you choose, all three hotels are great choices for your Epic Universe vacation.

Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Orlando is not for the faint of heart (and is not recommended for kids younger than 13). It features 10 chilling haunted houses, four horrifying scare zones and fantastically frightening entertainment.

When it comes to scary things, I fall somewhere between “Total fraidy cat” and “Fearless.” I attended the 34th Halloween Horror Nights on opening night, as an “HHN Newbie.” While I’m not completely traumatized, I might or might not have visions of being chased by malevolent clowns when I close my eyes.

Here’s what you need to know before you go — if you dare — and all the details on the 2025 event.

The writer was hosted.

2025 Halloween Horror Nights Dates, Prices, and Essential Info

This new season of scares begins on August 29 and runs through November 2 with select dates: August 29-31; September 3-7, 10-14, 16-17, 19-21, 24-28; October 1-5, 8-12, 15-19, 22-26, 29-31; and November 1-2. The event begins at 6:30pm each day, but ending hours vary by date.

Prices range from $86 to $131 per person (+ tax) depending on the date. An Express Pass that allows the ticket holders to skip the line once at each of the haunted houses and participating rides and attractions is $169. Premium Scream Night, a sneak peek on Aug. 28, is $415 per ticket. There’s also a VIP tour that starts at $389 and a behind-the-scenes, lights-on tour that starts at $100 per person. If you want extra time in the park before the frightening stuff starts, an additional $55 will get you in at 3:00 pm.

No Refunds, No Costumes, No Live Animals

  • The event happens rain or shine.
  • No refunds.
  • The ticket can only be used by the person who bought it on the date for which it was purchased. Note that Halloween Horror Nights is a separate ticketed event. You cannot enter the evening event with a daytime park ticket.
  • No costume masks, veils, long trains, live animals, swords or weaponry are permitted. You can read all of the costume rules here.

2025 Scares

Here’s how Universal describes the 2025 event:

“Halloween Horror Nights unleashes a double dose of dread with the ultimate nightmare as guests come face-to-face with the origins of fear through a sinister lineup of 10 all-new haunted houses, a collection of eerie scare zones, outrageous live shows, and so much more.

Halloween Horror Nights awakens two iconic franchises in all-new terrifying haunted houses inspired by the blockbuster film, “Five Nights at Freddy’s,” and WWE’s legendary The Wyatt Sicks. The horror kicks off at Universal Orlando Resort on Friday, August 29.”

10 Haunted Houses

Here is the haunted house lineup for this year’s event:

  • Five Nights at Freddy’s: Get ready for the night watch at a creepy, abandoned pizzeria, where nothing is what it seems and possessed animatronics are lurking.
  • The Horrors of the Wyatt Sicks: Go head-to-head with The Wyatt Sicks as they lure you through the ominous doorway to their shadowy realm. You’re about to meet your match.
  • Terrifier: Try your luck against Art the Clown in the Terrifier funhouse. You’ll witness his grotesque handiwork of torture and be exposed to the spatter of his victims. It’s a whole new level of gore!
  • Jason Universe: The iconic horror villain Jason Voorhees is coming for you. Step into his terrifying world, from his sinister shack in the woods to the summer camp where it all began. Evil doesn’t stay dead.
  • Fallout: Face your fears in post-apocalyptic LA. Escape from the vaults to the wasteland and confront the formidable bounty hunter The Ghoul.
  • Hatchet and Chains, Demon Bounty Hunters: In this Old West town, all hell is breaking loose. Red-hot lava demons are trying to possess everyone, melting everything in their path. Your only hope: Hatchet and Chains with their mystical weapons..
  • Dolls: Let’s Play Dead: You’re about to become doll-sized and witness the unnatural creations of a twisted little girl. You’ll be hunted by burnt fashion dolls, toys she’s melded together and undead horrors in her dollhouse.
  • Grave of Flesh: Welcome to your funeral, where things are about to go from bad to worse. You’ll enter your grave and then the underworld, where flesh-eaters who feed on the dead will hunt you for all eternity.
  • Gálkn: Monsters of the North: In a remote northern village, a wicked being rises from the dead, bringing a horde of monsters and demons from the fjords to wreak havoc on the townspeople. Try to escape the belly of the beast.
  • El Artista: A Spanish Haunting: In 19th-century Spain, a tortured artist moves to an isolated country manor to seek inspiration. Instead, the art comes alive and possesses him. You’re about to be part of the permanent exhibition.

4 Scare Zones

While the ghoulish, gory sights and jump scares inside the haunted houses are going to get your heart pumping, you’re not safe strolling through the park. There are four themed scare zones filled with “scareactors” whose mission in life – or death as it may be – is to scare the pants off of those who dare to meander through their turf.

  • The Origins of Horror: Enter a decaying conservatory of twisted vines where artists carve tributes to Halloween Horror Nights 34. You’ll encounter monstrous crows, gargoyles and more.
  • Masquerade: Dance with Death: You’re invited to a masquerade ball where bloodthirsty vampires lurk behind ornate disguises. When their masks fall, you’ll become their prey..
  • The Cat Lady of Crooked Lane: Travel down a spooky winding path to a mysterious home, where trick-or-treaters are transformed into feral felines. Be careful or you’ll be next.
  • Mutations: Toxic Twenties: In a bustling 1920s neighborhood, a BuzzCon truck with radioactive cargo crashes into a mobster getaway car sending the city into toxic pandemonium. It mutates everyone in its path, including you.

While not a scare zone, per se, Club Horror is a vibey outdoor space in Universal’s San Francisco area. There’s smoke, dancing, an undead deejay playing high-energy dance music and tall tables where you can gather with a cocktail. Think ghoulish street party.

Outrageous Live Shows

Nightmare Fuel show at Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios
I didn’t find this show particularly scary but some of the costumes and dance moves were quite spicy. Overall, I don’t recommend skipping the show. It’s incredible! Photo credit: Jill Robbins

There are two shows for 2025:

  • Nightmare Fuel: Circus of Decay features a once-vibrant circus that has festered into an unending nightmare. It’s a sinister spectacle of pyro, aerialists and illusions. The show is a jaw-dropping display of dance moves, acrobatics and music you can feel in your heart. This loud and fiery spectacular had the packed house gasping, cheering and singing along throughout the 30-minute show. The costumes and dancing are very risque and spicy. The dancers are incredibly talented and I don’t recommend skipping this show but it might make you blush.
  • Haunt-O-Phonic is a ghost story rising from its watery grave to haunt the Universal Studios lagoon, featuring towering water screens and eerie music.

SheBuysTravel Tip: Queue up for Nightmare Fuel at least 30 minutes before showtime; otherwise, you probably won’t get a seat.

Are Rides Open During Halloween Horror Nights?

Yes! If you can’t imagine a theme park visit without hopping on a thrill ride, you’re in luck: a selection of rides is open during Halloween Horror Nights. If getting on the rides is important to you, I recommend knocking this out early in the night. The event stays open late but the rides may close earlier.

The rides that will be open at the 2025 Halloween Horror Nights include:

  • Revenge of the Mummy
  • Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts
  • Transformers: The Ride 3D
  • Men in Black Alien Attack.

SheBuysTravel Tip: Timewise, it is really difficult to hit all of the haunted houses and scare zones and ride rides. Unless the scary stuff really isn’t your thing, get the most mileage out of your Halloween Horror Nights ticket by prioritizing the themed activities.

An HHN First-Timer’s Impressions

I love a good scary movie now and then, although I haven’t seen anything more recent than It – the first one — so obviously I don’t consider myself a horror enthusiast. I’ve been to some pretty scary haunted houses over the past several years, but the theming, theatrics and costuming at Universal Orlando Resort is unrivaled by anything I’ve experienced.

The haunted houses and scare zones are all incredibly immersive, with detailed backstories that are summarized above and online. If you opt for the RIP Tour, your guide will provide you with a bit more insight into the stories and details behind the monsters.

Do You Love a Back Story?

Creepy kid’s toys, twisted clowns…you know…all the good stuff. Photo credit: Jill Robbins

Some of the haunted houses at Halloween Horror Nights are based on movies, video games and pop culture and others were created by the talented team at Universal – it’s about half and half.

As someone not familiar with Five Nights at Freddy’s or Terrifier the scares were all the same to me – creepy animatronic animals, creepy clowns and creepy demon monsters. I could appreciate the creativity and the detail but someone who has a deeper need to dig into the narrative behind the jump scare might be more excited.

This event definitely has a following and many of the people I spoke to on opening night have attended year after year. Universal does an incredible job at creating all-new scary experiences year after year, which is why the event does so much repeat business. My terror slash enjoyment of Halloween Horror Nights was pretty on the surface but if you seek a more detailed level of understanding, that’s there, too.

My HHN Favorites

Scareactor in the Toxic 20s scare zone at Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios
It’s easy to say but there’s really no need to be uber afraid of the scareactors. They’ll come close but they won’t touch you. Photo credit: Jill Robbins

My favorite haunted house was El Artista: A Spanish Haunting. The crumbling 19th-century manor is dripping with decaying vines, exquisitely masked ghouls that are almost too beautiful to be frightening – almost. What really sealed the deal for me on this one was the gargoyle (a real-life scareactor) flying across the ceiling on a cable. My favorite scare area was Mutations: The Toxic Twenties. The roaring twenties costuming was on point.

Everything was really well done and there wasn’t anything I didn’t like or thought wasn’t well-themed. I think I would have gotten more out of the experience if I were more familiar with the background stories of the horror films and video games some of the haunted houses were based on but knowing those stories isn’t essential to having a good time.

Is Everything Scary at Halloween Horror Nights?

Club Horror at Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios
Club Horror is a high-energy street dancing experience with big nightclub energy. Photo credit: Jill Robbins

Overall, yes. The name gives it away. If scary isn’t your thing, Halloween Horror Nights is probably not the wisest investment at Universal Orlando Resort. With scare zones throughout the park, it’s hard to avoid a scare or two when getting from point A to point B.

If you’re with a larger group or visiting with younger kids – remember, Universal recommends this event for 13+ due to scary scenes, gore and intensity of the haunted houses – I can see wanting to have a less scary plan, but overall this is an event for people who enjoy being frightened.

The haunted houses are indeed scary. The scareactors won’t touch you – and you can’t touch them – but there are a ton of jump scares and really sinister-looking characters. Ditto for the scareactors in the scare zones – they’ll run at you with fake chainsaws and get close to you but they won’t touch or grab you. If you’re not in one of the scare zones, you can be reasonably sure the scareactors won’t bother you but there are a few characters that roam the park and can pop up anywhere.

Halloween Horror Nights Themed Merchandise

Clown Cafe merch from Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios
Themed merchandise is available in a pop-up store and at kiosks throughout the park. Photo credit: Jill Robbins

The 2025 Halloween Horror Nights event features trendy merchandise that’s branded for the event. There are apparel items, such as shirts and hats, mugs, and collectibles, that would make great spooky season decor pieces. There’s also a “Deathly Afraid” light-up necklace you can purchase if you’re truly wimpy. This signals the scareactors not to approach you when you pass through the scare zones, although they don’t work inside the haunted houses.

There’s a pop-up store and lots of merchandise being sold at kiosks throughout the park. If you’re seeking merch, you won’t have to look very hard to find it.

Themed Eats

The Universal Orlando Resort culinary theme has really outdone itself with themed HHN food and drinks. I sampled all the specialty foods for this year’s event, and there really is something for every taste. What I liked was that there’s a mix of hearty, real food that will fuel you through a very long night and provide a base if you plan on drinking alcohol.

The food is just “gross enough” to be a fun nod to the Halloween season without being so over-the-top that it’s unappetizing, like “Clown Cafe Bloody Popcorn,” which features popcorn chicken with pepperoni, marinara blood sauce, and parmesan over popcorn. Messy but good. If you’re looking for “Instagrammable” treats, “Mr. Cupcake” is the clear winner. It’s also a really good cupcake with raspberry and homemade cannoli filling. But that is a heck of a lot of icing!

There are also a variety of themed cocktails. The souvenir cup is $19 and refills are $14. Most of the specialty drinks are on the sweet side. The food and drink kiosks are plentiful around the park so you don’t have to look far to find them and the lines aren’t terrible.

Staying at a Universal Orlando Resort Hotel

The best way to experience Halloween Horror Nights is with a stay at a Universal Orlando Resort Hotel. You’ll receive numerous benefits, including priority entry through a dedicated gate and free transportation.

There are 11 official hotels on property. I recently stayed at Cabana Bay Beach Resort and thought it was a great fit for a quick trip to attend Halloween Horror Nights. Cabana Bay has over 2,000 rooms and a huge lobby food court, the Bayliner Diner, which is open late on HHN nights, just in case you’ve got the munchies when you get back from the parks.

The rooms are fairly no frills but they’ve got cute retro theming – I’m a sucker for the avocado green/burnt orange combo – and lots of amenities, including a bowling alley, lobby bar, a Starbucks and a great pool with a lazy river.

The hotels get into the HHN spirit with themed decor and cocktails in the bars and lounges. The Swizzle Stick in the lobby at Cabana Bay Beach Resort has a full menu of spooky libations, including the Scarlet Spell, pictured here. Photo credit: Jill Robbins

Tips for Visiting Halloween Horror Nights at Universal

  • Download the Official Universal Orlando Resort App for maps, wait times, show times and more.
  • Purchase tickets in advance and use the Universal app to speed your entry and get you to the scares that much faster.
  • If you’re looking for smaller crowds, consider visiting on weeknights or early in September.
  • Purchase upgrades, like the guided R.I.P. Tour or the Express Pass, to the extent your budget allows. You’ll spend less time waiting in line and with 10 haunted houses, that’s important. On opening night, the wait for one of the haunted houses was listed as 180 minutes.
  • Arrive at the event opening and prepare for a long night.
  • If you’re visiting other parks in the Orlando area, consider scheduling a rest day or a pool day before heading to HHN. You’ll last longer!
  • Wear comfortable shoes and clothes. You will walk a lot and even in the latter part of October, Orlando is probably going to be humid. I saw lots of clubwear, high heels, fishnet stockings and leather and while the “Goth” style is a great vibe for a scary Halloween event, I highly recommend wearing what you know will be comfortable for eight hours on your feet. I saw a few people limping at the end of the night.

Every Epic Universe guest is a traveler, and my preferred journey comes with many drink stops. While others sprint under the Chronos towards the Ministry of Magic or race to power up in Nintendo World, I prefer a more leisurely pace to my day, wandering among the bars and sipping the colorful, creative and refreshing beverages.

Best First Stop: Moonshine Bar, Ministry of Magic

Bar Moonshine entrance with sparkling wine cocktail

Everyone knows that the “Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry” ride is visually stunning and the Butterbeer crepes are scrumptious. Personally, my first stop of the day is Bar Moonshine.

What to Order: Gigglewater

The simple cocktail is just sparkling wine and elderflower liqueur. It is slightly sweet, bright and refreshing. With my wand in one hand and glass in the other, I enjoy strolling past the windows and casting a few spells.

SheBuysTravel Tip: For guests who want a truly authentic French alcoholic cocktail, the Domaine Dupont Pommeau de Normandie is a must try.

Favorite Stop for a Mid-Day Mocktail: Astro Bar

Bar Zenith menu with cherry mocktail beverage
Bar Zenith mocktail. Photo credit: Cristine Struble

While cocktail hour can come early at Epic Universe, I always enjoy some non-alcoholic beverages throughout the day. Instead of another Butterbeer or Nintendo-themed milkshake, the Astro Bar has some refreshing mocktails.

What to Order: The Eccentric Orbit.

The juicy cherry flavor with the Sprite makes the warm sun more bearable.

SheBuysTravel Tip: Grab a beverage at Astro Bar before watching the nighttime show.

Most Authentic Drink in the Theme Park: Mead Hall, How to Train Your Dragon

The vibrant How to Train Your Dragon world celebrates both authenticity and imagination. After flying on Hiccup’s Winged Gliders, I love to stop at Mead Hall.

What to Order: Glass of Mead

The honey wine is fruity and cuts through the grilled meat’s richness. I’ve had many spirited conversations sipping mead and enjoying a meal in this restaurant.

SheBuysTravel Tip: For a dessert beverage, the Yakonog is always a good choice. The malted chocolate and cinnamon beverage is a great alternative to Butterbeer.

Most Unsuspecting Potent Potable: CelesTiki

Caribbean Spiced Colada, photo credit: Cristine Struble

While I love many theme park rides, Stardust Racer’s green side requires a little liquid courage or a post-ride cocktail to calm my nerves. CelesTiki, located in Celestial Park, has many cocktails that take the edge off.

What to Order: My personal favorite is the Caribbean Spice Colada.

Fair warning, it is one of the strongest cocktails served. Sitting by the bar and enjoying some people watching for a little mid-day break is a wonderful escape.

SheBuysTravel Tip: Grab a cookie from the Frosty Moon, which is next to CelesTiki, and turn the stop into a late-night dessert stop.

Most Visually Compelling Cocktails: Atlantic

pink gin cocktail with cucumber garnish

One of the signature restaurants at Epic Universe, Atlantic’s aquatic-themed space has some of the most visually interesting cocktails. I love going to Atlantic for an early dinner where the whole restaurant seems to shimmer. The beverages seem to take this enticing glow that invites total relaxation.

What to Order: Nordic Lights martini or the Melon and Herb Highball

The cucumber garnish of the highball captures water’s constant movement. It is zesty and re-energizes me for many more hours of fun.

Boldest Flavor Cocktails: Blue Dragon Pan-Asian Restaurant

Epic Universe's Blue Dragon restaurant entrance with Helios Hotel in the background

When the sun sets, Blue Dragon Pan-Asian Restaurant comes alive. The glowing neon makes me think of bustling street markets that are best enjoyed under the stars. Similar to the spicy dishes on the food menu, Blue Asian’s cocktails are equally as flavorful.

What to Order: Szechuan Smash

From the special smoked presentation to the Szechuan peppercorns, I appreciate the tempered spice; it makes me feel alive.

SheBuysTravel Tip: Blue Dragon’s selection of Japanese whiskey is quite impressive. Whiskey drinkers have many options that will have them ordering a second or third drink.

Most Creative Storytelling: Burning Blade Tavern, Dark Universe

Tucked into the corner of Dark Universe, I can never escape the lure of the Burning Blade Tavern. Stepping through those heavy doors is both a place to rest and reinvigorate the senses. The spot turns a cocktail into a memorable tale.

What to Order: Pure of Heart

Every time I order a cocktail, I discover something new. From the choice of a wilted mint garnish to a memorable quip when the beverage is handed to me, every moment is special. But the Pure of Heart is my all-time favorite cocktail. With a spell to keep the monsters at bay, it has kept me in good spirits on my occasions.

SheBuysTravel Tip: Burning Blade has a tremendous selection of specialty beers. From a smoked German marzen to the signature Reaper’s Reserve, it is my favorite beer stop, too.

Living in the theme park capital of the world allows me to enjoy the daytime thrills and the nighttime adventures. SeaWorld Orlando offered me the opportunity to attend a media night for its new Summer Spectacular Night Show.

After enjoying the nighttime extravaganza that exploded with colors, motion, and images, I am sharing my best tips and tricks for guests to absorb every minute. From the optimum place to sit to where to grab a beverage to enjoy before the show, this fail-proof advice ensures your experience will be one to remember.

SeaWorld Orlando included me in a media event where I was given theme park admission.

Nighttime Shows: The Highlight of the SeaWorld Summer Spectacular

  • SeaWorld Summer Spectacular begins with Club SeaGlow starting at 7:30 p.m.
  • Ignite Drone Show and Fireworks begins at 9 p.m.
  • The nighttime event happens daily, weather permitting

The SeaWorld Summer Spectacular 2025 comes alive at night. As the golden hour creates stunning colors in the sky, the Club SeaGlow Dance party takes over the Bayside Stadium. The hot beats draw everyone to the dance floor.

Once the stars fill the night sky, the dance floor empties, and a new drone and Ignite fireworks show take flight. The show opens with drones transforming into colorful turtles, manta rays, and whales. Then, fireworks explode in colorful bursts, fountains spray, and pyrotechnics ignite on the water. The mesmerizing event captivated me, from start to finish.

Are you ready to explore more theme parks? Let us inspire you!

Arrive Early for More Seating Choices

  • SeaWorld Summer Spectacular has open seating at Bayside Stadium
  • Early arrivals have more location options

Since everyone wants to maximize a full day of theme park fun, picking the right time to head to Bayside Stadium is key. As many parents appreciate, entertaining sitting kids for too long ruins the experience.

Personally, I prefer to head to Bayside Stadium around 8:30 p.m. With a cold beverage in my hand, there are usually plenty of open seats. I found that timing allows people to watch or participate in Club SeaGlow and have a few minutes to prepare for Ignite fireworks.

Pick the Best Seat for You

The Bayside Stadium is a vast space, so picking the best spot to view the show depends on personal preferences.

  • Best Unobstructed View: The right side, at the front of the stadium, offers a clear view of the drone show and fireworks. You’ll be down front and facing the water, but pyrotechnic moments can get quite warm and may frighten small kids.
  • Best Space for Families with Young Children: The middle of the stadium, where loud noises and the heat from pyrotechnics, allows great views yet offers a buffer.
  • Quickest Exit: Left side of the stadium, which is closest to the park exit, allows you to be in front of the mass exodus when the show is over.

SheBuysTravel Tip: Consider sitting by the aisle for the best views and picture taking. Although it will be hot from the fire, the views are worth the heat.

Grab a Beverage before the Summer Spectacular Nighttime Show

Flamecraft Bar (located next to Seafire Grill)

  • Offers a selection of craft beers, cocktails and other beverages as well as bar snacks
  • Great spot to sit at a waterfront table and watch the Club SeaGlow party come to life
  • Guests can take away food and beverages to enjoy in Bayside Stadium

SheBuysTravel Tip: SeaWorld Orlando features a variety of local craft beers on tap.

SeaWorld Orlando Summer Spectacular: Definitely Till the Park Closes

  • SeaWorld’s Summer Spectacular runs nightly through September 1, 2025.
  • SeaWorld Orlando closes after the Summer Spectacular Nighttime Show ends
  • Theme park hours are generally 9 a.m. till 9 p.m.

While families often start theme park days early, staying for the nighttime show is one of the concepts that captures what makes SeaWorld unique: celebrating the wonders of the sea in an awe-inspiring nighttime adventure.

SeaWorld Orlando’s Summer Fun Happens All Day Long, Too

SeaWorld Orlando celebrates all the summer fun from the theme park’s opening till the stars twinkle in the sky. From families strolling around the theme park to friends enjoying a night out, SeaWorld Orlando offers something for everyone.

Don’t miss these!

  • Attend Baby Shark’s Big Celebration
  • Catch the New Ride: Expedition Odyssey Flying Theater
  • See Emperor Penguins: SeaWorld Orlando is the only place you can see them in the Western Hemisphere
  • Eat some Summer Spectacular specialty food and beverages

From zipping on coasters to sipping on butterbeer to helping the Transformers save the world, I love spending time at Universal Orlando Resort. But after a full day of adventure, I require a comfortable place to recharge. This guide breaks down all the on-property hotels at Universal Orlando Resort—plus a few standout nearby options worth considering.

My Top Picks at Universal Orlando

The Signature Collection at Universal Orlando

Pool at the Hard Rock Hotel at Universal Orlando
The pool at the Hard Rock Hotel at Universal, a Signature Collection Universal resort, is the place to cool off after a long day in the parks. Photo credit: Cindy Richards

These hotels are the priciest, but a room here comes with some serious theme park perks, including:

  • Unlimited Express Passes for everyone in the room. Even better, the passes are good for the full day you check in and the full day you check out. So you could book one night at a Signature Collection resort and get two days of Unlimited Express Passes. The price for those passes ranges from $119 to more than $300 per day, on top of the park ticket price. So it makes a hotel room that costs $1000 per night in high season seem not so expensive. And if you travel during low season when the rates can be less than $400 a night, staying at one of these luxury resorts is a no-brainer. Note that stays at Universal Sapphire Falls or the newest Universal Signature Collection property, Helios Grand Hotel, do NOT include this Express Pass perk.
  • Early park admission that gets you into one of the four theme parks (Epic Unviersre, Islands of Adventure, Universal Studios or the Volcano Bay waterpark) an hour before the park opens to the general public. (Note: You still need to buy a park ticket for the day!)
  • Priority seating at some theme park and CityWalk restaurants
  • Water taxis, shuttle buses and walking paths that make it easy to get to the theme parks and dedicated security lines into the parks so you don’t have to waste time waiting in the long lines at the general entrance.
  • The ability to charge purchases at the theme parks and CityWalk to your room and have those purchases delivered to your room so you don’t have to carry them around the parks.

Hard Rock Hotel

Taylor Swift and John Lennon images overlooking the front desk of the Hard Rock Hotel at Universal Orlando Resort

I love the way Hard Rock leans into the rock ‘n’ roll theming; I love the level of service even more. I felt like a rock star from the minute my Uber pulled up to the front doors of this luxury hotel.

The rock star theme is everywhere, from Taylor Swift looking over the shoulder of the front desk clerk who checked me in, to my room key envelope that read “Let my love open the door,” to the rock star height markings on the mirror in my guestroom that topped out at the six-foot-four-inch Snoop Dogg.

What’s So Great About the Hard Rock Hotel

  • The rock ‘n’ roll theming throughout includes a Fender guitar and amp you can borrow to play during your stay and guitar lessons that stream on the TV
  • Unlimited Express Passes for everyone staying in the room
  • Fitness center (although it’s more fun getting your exercise walking around the theme parks!)
  • Connecting rooms and a “Future Rock Star” family suite are available for larger groups
  • Heated outdoor pool and hot tub that are open late for a last-minute dip after a long day at the theme parks
  • It’s easy to get to the parks via a water taxi, shuttle buses and garden walking path. (I highly recommend the water taxi!)
  • 2 full-service restaurants, poolside bar and a coffee shop that serves snacks. (The pizza sizes posted on the wall are displayed on 12- and 16-inch vinyl records, in keeping with the hotel theming.)
  • Pet friendly

Loews Sapphire Falls Resort

Every Universal employee I talked with — literally, every single one — told me that the Caribbean-themed Sapphire Falls is their favorite hotel on property. And I definitely enjoyed my stay there when I visited as a guest of Universal.

At Sapphire Falls, you get an elevated level of service, but at a lower price point. Hotel perks do not include the Unlimited Express Passes or preferred restaurant seating. That’s an important distinction. If you want the Express Passes, definitely compare the full cost of staying at Sapphire Falls and buying those passes daily with the cost of paying slightly more to stay at one of the Signature Collection resorts with the passes included.

What’s So Great About Sapphire Falls Resort

  • Attentive service
  • Easy access to the theme parks via water taxi or garden path (with a dedicated security line so there’s little or no wait to get into the parks)
  • Volcano Bay, Universal’s epic water park, is a 5-minute walk away from the hotel. (Before you go, read our tips for Volcano Bay.)
  • Understated theming with touches of beauty, such as the winding stone staircase from the third-floor lobby down to the pool and water taxi
  • Enormous pool with a water slide, hot tub and plenty of sun loungers
  • A fine dining restaurant that serves excellent Caribbean food, pool bar and grill, small grab-and-go sandwich shop and a lobby bar with excellent bartenders who can tell you everything you want to know about the many varieties of rum they serve.

Prime Value Resorts come at a lower price point but still include these theme park perks:

  • Water taxis, shuttle buses and walking paths that make it easy to get to the theme parks and dedicated security lines into the parks so you don’t have to waste time waiting in the long lines at the general entrance.
  • The ability to charge purchases throughout the resort to your room and have those purchases delivered to your room so you don’t have to carry them around the parks.

Universal Aventura Hotel

The sleek, modern triple towers of Aventura offer views of three Universal theme parks — Islands of Adventure, Universal Studios and Volcano Bay water park. And the entrance to Volcano Bay is, quite literally, in the backyard of the hotel. That entrance has its own security line; I never waited for more than two minutes to enter the park.

  • Shortest walk to Volcano Bay water park
  • Rooms offer views of three Universal theme parks
  • Large pool
  • Restaurant options include a food hall and rooftop bistro

Value Inns and Suites

The lowest priced hotels on property at Universal, these hotels offer standard rooms and suites that can accommodate larger families.

Universal’s Cabana Bay Beach Resort

I didn’t stay at this resort on my last visit, although I did manage to get there for lunch. The over-the-top 1950s theming is so much fun, that I plan to stay here on my next visit. I’ll need to reserve that room early, though. This hotel is one of the most popular, especially during Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights celebration, and families return to it year after year.

Cabana Bay is all about nostalgia. I thought of my Grandma and Grandpa as I ate lunch — a burger and the best milkshake I have ever had — while watching the black-and-white cartoons and commercials from the 1950s and 60s. The retro vibe runs through the hotel, from the 1960s patterns on the bedspreads to the bowling alley off the lobby. But the best part is the milkshake I got from the Shakes Malt Shoppe. Even if you aren’t staying at Cabana Bay, do what I did: visit for lunch or dinner so you can taste a milkshake — they come in adult flavors too!

What’s So Great About Cabana Bay Resort

  • Fun retro theming and iconic architecture inspired by classic Florida beach resorts of the 1950s and 60s
  • Family suites that include a kitchenette and room for 6. (If you want one of those, book early. They sell out fast.)
  • It’s an easy walk to Volcano Bay water park and quick water taxi ride to Islands of Adventure, Universal Studios and CityWalk.
  • A casual food court off the lobby, Galaxy Bowl restaurant at the bowling alley, poolside bar and grill, Starbucks and the not-to-be-missed Shakes Malt Shoppe
  • Two huge pools with a waterslide and lazy river
  • Bowling alley

Should You Stay On Property or Off Property?

If you’re all about the theme parks, then I vote for staying on property. It comes with exclusive perks, such as Early Park Admission (with a valid theme park admission ticket); free water taxis, shuttle buses and walking trails between your hotel and the theme parks; and the ability to charge in-park purchases to your room and have your purchases delivered so you don’t have to carry them around with you.

Plus, if you stay at one of the high-end Universal Orlando hotels, it also comes with Unlimited Express Passes for everyone staying in the room. Those passes, which allow you faster access to rides for as many times as you want, start at $119 per person per day and can cost more than $300 per person per day, depending on the day and theme park you visit.

On the other hand, choosing an off-property hotel near Universal Studios has its own perks:

  • It’s possible to stay at a luxury resort with a dreamy poolside waterfall or to find more budget-friendly options.
  • You can use your hotel reward points to book (saving more money for fun in the parks).
  • You can get more space to accommodate a larger family.

Universal’s Helios Grand Hotel is the newest—and most luxe—property at Universal Orlando. The decor is Mediterranean-inspired and the private entrance to Epic Universe is legit. The 14 “How to Train Your Dragon” themed kids’ rooms are cool without being corny. It’s in the same hotel category as Portofino and Hard Rock, but the atmosphere is totally different. Calming colors, breezy architecture, and little surprises like the prosecco popsicle at Lotus Lagoon.

Grand and Grounded

  • Helios opened in May 2025 as part of Universal’s new Signature Collection, with 500 rooms and 35 suites.
  • It leans upscale without being stuffy—lots of sunlight, earthy tones, and a relaxed Mediterranean vibe that still feels theme park–friendly.
  • The hotel’s back door literally opens to Epic Universe. No shuttle. No walking path. You flash your room key and park ticket, and you’re in.

Room Types: Spacious, Calm, and Smartly Designed

  • Standard rooms come with a king or two queen beds, high ceilings, and lots of natural light.
  • Themed kids suites are where Helios gets creative—in a cool, non-cheesy way. The one I toured had a separate bedroom with How to Train Your Dragon–inspired décor that is fun but not over the top.
  • The two sleeping spaces are divided, so there is some privacy.

Private Epic Universe Entrance

  • THIS is a total game-changer. We grabbed coffee in the lobby and were walking into Celestial Park in under five minutes.
  • You can come and go freely throughout the day. Early Park Admission is included. There is a security check at the door – just show your room key and valid park ticket to use the entrance up to one hour before general opening.
  • Day visitors can check out the lobby, but they can’t use the park door.

Dining & Drinks: Elevated and Efficient

  • The zero-entry pool is huge, serene, and beautifully designed. Bonus: underwater speakers and a hot tub.
  • Private cabanas are available to rent and they come with fans, comfy seating, shaded loungers, and drink service.

Park Perks

  • Early Park Admission (including Epic Universe) is included with your stay.
  • Complimentary merchandise delivery means you can buy that robe, wand, or dragon plush without dragging it around all day.
  • Charging privileges across Universal Orlando are included—just tap your room key and go.

Good to Know

  • *EXPRESS PASS NOT INCLUDED* – Helios is officially Premier in name and vibe  (upscale design, prime location, private entrance to Universal Studios), but staying there DOES NOT INCLUDE Express Pass.
  • Check-in is at 4 PM, check-out at 11 AM.
  • A deposit for one night (plus tax) is charged within five business days of booking. You can cancel up to six days before arrival for a full refund.
  • Self-parking is $36–$45 per night, depending on demand. Valet is available at a higher rate.
  • Rollaway beds are available for $35/night + tax.
  • Pets are not allowed.

Universal’s Helios Grand Hotel does not include Express Pass like Portofino or Hard Rock, but honestly? The time saved by walking out the back door and into the parks makes up for it.

This is the hotel I’d book for first-time Universal guests or multi-gen trips where comfort and ease really matter.

Universal’s Stella Nova is more than just a place to sleep—it’s part of the experience. You’re next to Epic Universe (the newest park that opened in May 2025), with perks like early park entry, space-inspired style that feels elevated, not kitschy and a price point that keeps it within reach.

Universal Stella Nova Resort Rooms

  • All 750 rooms are the same layout: standard rooms with two queen beds, a mini-fridge, and a chest of drawers. Plenty of space to walk around, even with two suitcases open on the floor.
  • Design is sleek and modern—white with curved edges, minimalist but not cold.
  • I woke up each morning to a view that looked like a painting—lush green landscaping and bright blue skies through my big window.
  • You’ll need to request a room near the elevators if long hallways bug you. Mine felt far, and a couple I met in the elevator was clearly not loving the trek after a long park day.

Stella Nova Food & Drinks

  • Cosmos Market (off the lobby) has grab-and-go muffins, breakfast sandwiches, chips, and sundries if you forgot toothpaste or sunscreen.
  • Next door is Cosmos Café, where I ordered the turkey BLT with sweet potato fries—twice. At $14, it’s not cheap, but it’s reasonable these days. Other options include pizza, salads, sandwiches, and a kids menu.
  • Nova Bar is just past the lobby – open and spacious, keeping the space theme going with a fun Constellation Cocktails menu with names like the Black Hole, Super Nova and Antares.

Stella Nova Resort Pool

  • The pool is huge and gorgeous. It’s 10,000-square-feet with plenty of loungers, shaded areas, a splash pad for kids, a hot tub, and fire pits at night.
  • Poolside movies are shown on select nights.

Stella Nova Resort Perks

  • Early Park Admission (1 hour) is included, which means you can get into select rides at Epic Universe or other parks an hour before the general public. This alone makes the stay worth it, especially if you’re trying to ride something like Celestial Spin or VelociCoaster without the crazy waits.
  • Free shuttle service to all Universal parks and CityWalk is efficient and frequent.
  • Merch delivery to your room is complimentary.

Parking, pets, and booking basics

  • Parking is $30 per night for hotel guests.
  • No pets allowed.
  • There is a comparison tool on the Universal Orlando site to look at amenities for each hotel.
  • You must be at least 21 to check in, unless you’re 17+ with active military ID.

Bottom line: Is Stella Nova worth it?

It’s not luxury, but it’s got personality, efficiency, and little perks that make theme park travel easier.  I vote yes, if you want:

  • A clean, modern hotel that’s still family-friendly
  • Park perks like early entry and free shuttles
  • Proximity to Epic Universe without the deluxe price tag
  • Practical comforts like spacious rooms, solid food, and cosmic cocktails

I would stay again but next time, I’ll request a room closer to the elevators. For more information and current pricing information click here.

The long-awaited Epic Universe is finally here. The first major theme park to open in the US since Universal launched Islands of Adventure in 1999, the sprawling Universal Epic Universe opens to the public May 22, 2025.

A select few of us got a sneak peek at this epic $7 billion wonder. After spending a ride-packed 12 hours in the 750-acre park, I can say that it lives up to the hype. The theming in the queues alone is worth a visit. It’s some of the best I’ve seen at any theme park, ever.

Here are my best tips to help you experience all the thrill, dark, and magical rides at Universal Epic Universe.

Five Immersive Lands Centered Around the Hub

But first, an overview of what you’ll find at Epic Universe. You’ll step through dazzling LED portals to enter five distinct lands:

  • Celestial Park – An ethereal, otherworldly hub filled with gardens, fountains, and the park’s signature dueling coaster, Stardust Racers.
  • The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic – A stunning, scaled city that feels like stepping into the middle of a magical Parisian town. It’s home to Battle at the Ministry, an immersive dark ride set within the British Ministry of Magic.
  • Super Nintendo World – A vibrant, colorful land that makes you feel like you’ve stepped straight into the world of Mario and friends.
  • How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk – A rugged land of towering cliffs, cascading waterfalls, dense forests, and animatronic dragons tucked into hidden nooks and crannies.
  • Dark Universe – A moody, atmospheric land inspired by Universal’s classic monsters and, anchored by the towering Frankenstein Manor, home to the flagship ride, Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment.

SheBuysTravel Tip: There’s something for the whole family! Within its intricately themed lands, Epic Universe offers 11 rides that range in intensity from intense roller coasters to family-friendly experiences.

Stay at a Universal Hotel for Early Access to the Parks

Each of the entrances to Epic Universe’s five lands are called “Portals.” Here, the Portal to Super Nintendo World. Photo credit: Melissa Heckscher

Universal has 11 hotels in Orlando, including three beauties next to Epic Universe that opened this spring. Staying at any of these hotels gets you:

  • Early access to one or more of the parks each day. Check the Universal parks calendar to see which parks open early on the day you plan to visit.
  • Free shuttle transportation to and from the parks—though you can walk to Epic from the Stella Nova and the Helios Grand hotels.
  • Free merchandise delivery to your hotel.
  • Parkwide charging privileges.

Of those perks, the most important one (in my roller-coaster-loving opinion) is the one-hour early entry into the park.

SheBuysTravel Tip: Not all the rides are open during the early admission hour. During my visit, the only rides open during this hour were Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge, Yoshi’s Adventure, Donkey Kong Mine-Cart Madness, and Stardust Racers.

The view of Super Nintendo World at Universal Orlando’s Epic Universe.

With that extra hour at Epic Universe, I advise heading straight to Super Nintendo World for ride Mine-Cart Madness. This zippy little coaster was one of my favorite rides in the park—and if the AVERAGE 144-minute wait for the same ride at Universal Studios Japan is any indication, the line will be long (and there’s no Express Pass line).

Stay at the Helios Grand

The 500-room Helios Grand hotel as seen from the central hub of Epic Universe.

Sure, $500 a night is no bargain, but if you are up for the splurge, Universal’s newest “Signature Collection” hotel is a sprawling lap of luxury that sits so close to Epic Universe that you can hear the screams from its roller coasters wafting in the wind.

Not only does it have upscale amenities and a stunning top-floor restaurant with 360-degree views; it also boasts a resort-style pool, multiple dining options, and breathtaking views of the park.

It’s as close as any hotel gets to a theme park in the US—tied with Disney’s Grand Californian in Anaheim, which straddles the border of Disneyland’s California Adventure. And being able to step through a doorway and be ‘home’ while the masses queue up for shuttle buses? Priceless.

Book the Harry Potter Ride AS SOON as You Get into Epic Universe

The dark and magical "floo" queue for the Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry ride.

The Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry ride inside Epic’s Wizarding World is a technological marvel from the moment you step into the line. The queue itself is a spectacle unlike anything I’ve ever seen on a theme park ride. And that’s before the ride even starts.

The bad news? With state-of-the-art technology comes occasional technical hiccups. During my visit, the ride was closed or “delayed” more often than it was open. I waited in its stunning queue three separate times (honestly, it says a lot that I didn’t mind coming back again and again) but never actually made it onto the ride.

That said, my visit was during a “technical rehearsal,” so hopefully Universal smooths out the kinks soon. Maybe it’s time for Harry to cast a little “Expecto Mechanicum!” spell?

Opt for the Single Rider Line

If your aversion to long lines is stronger than your need to ride with your fellow Epic Universians, use the Single Rider Lines to get ahead of the crowds! These seven Epic Universe rides offer Single Rider Line queues:

  • Mine-Cart Madness
  • Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge
  • Curse of the Werewolf
  • Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment
  • Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry
  • Hiccup’s Wing Gliders
  • Stardust Racers

Ride the Constellation Carousel at Night

A nighttime shot of the Constellation Carousel at Universal's Epic Universe in Orlando.

This is not your mother’s merry-go-round. Beyond the traditional carousel turntable, this ride includes four smaller turntables and ride animals that aren’t tethered to the ride’s ceiling. It’s an effect that makes it look like riders are floating through the air—especially at night, when each creature is illuminated by glowing orbs and a swirling sky of stars. It’s no thrill ride, but it’s beautiful.

Plan Where and What You Want to Eat

With more than 30 dining locations spread across the five immersive lands, there’s plenty to nosh on when you’re ready to eat. That said, theme park designers took special care to make the food’s theming as immersive as the lands. So fill your tummies wisely.

Some must-try food and drinks:

  • The Mario Burger (complete with a Mario cap on the bun) at Toadstool Cafe in Super Nintendo World.
  • The Stormfly’s Catch of the Day at Mead Hall in the Isle of Berk features a sweet cakey goldfish on top of a bed of rice krispy treats.
  • The Piranha Plant caprese salad  at Super Nintendo World’s Toadstool Cafe will get your kids to eat their veggies.
  • The Northern Lights at Celestial Park is an elegant martini made with Beluga Noble Vodka, Pallini limoncello, Ferrand Dry Curaçao, lemon juice, simple syrup—with a butterfly pea blossom ice sphere rolled in gold luster dust to look like a shimmering planet floating in your drink.
  • The Lobotacotta at Dark Universe is designed to look like a brain sitting in a pool of blood. Mmmm. (Really, it’s greek yogurt-based vanilla panna cotta with raspberry sauce and popping candies).
  • Reaper’s Reserve is Dark Universe’s exclusive beer, a caramel-spice brown ale from Orlando’s Crooked Can Brewing Company.

Choose the Right Side of the Stardust Racers Coaster

Two dueling coasters approach each other t the Stardust Racers roller coaster at Epic Universe.
Stardust Racers is a dual-track launched roller coaster in Epic Universe’s Celestial Park that sends riders soaring through a cosmic-themed race filled with airtime hills, near-misses, and synchronized twists. Photo credit: Melissa Heckscher

Described as “Epic Universe’s most thrilling coaster experience,” Stardust Racers is a sprawling 1.5-minute dueling coaster that whisks riders through a host of lifts, drops, and unique maneuvers including the “Celestial Spin,” where the two competing coaster vehicles do an inverted crisscross while speeding through the air.

If you’re brave enough to ride it (I wasn’t), you may wonder which track to choose: Photon (the yellow track) or Pulsar (the green track)? Both reach speeds of 62 miles per hour and heights up to 133 feet, but insiders say the green track is more intense. To choose it, veer right when choosing a line.

Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment is a Dark Ride—but I Didn’t Get Nauseous

Gothic spires reach up from towering stone walls at the Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment ride at Epic Universe.

Families with small kids may wonder if the Monsters Unchained ride is too scary for their kids. And while the answer largely depends on your kids (my 10-year-old was totally unfazed by it, and I saw many younger kids happily on board), I’d say kids under 7 may want to skip it (guests must be 48 inches tall to ride anyway, so it may be a non-issue).

Without spoiling the fun: This is an in-the-dark ride that tosses riders around (but not upside down) in a fixed set (mixed with background projections). You’ll whirl through the dark underbelly of Frankenstein’s castle while a realistic-looking crew of infamous monsters—including Dracula, The Wolf Man, The Mummy, the Creature from the Black Lagoon—do their best to scare you.

Is it scary? Kind of. The monsters themselves might frighten young kids—these animatronics are next-level!—but there are no sudden drops or steep hills. The whole experience is like a high-tech funhouse ride, featuring marvelously realistic creatures and immersive effects. And while a few Reddit users reported feeling queasy, the general consensus is that most riders come out feeling just fine.

Don’t Sit in Front at the Untrainable Dragon Show

A wide shot of the Isle of Berk at Universal's Epic Universe in Orlando.
The Isle of Berk brings the How to Train Your Dragon world to life with “The Untrainable Dragon” show, two exciting rides, and animatronic dragons galore. Photo credit: Universal Orlando Resort.

This is a can’t-miss show for anyone who loves How to Train Your Dragon. I don’t want to ruin the surprises, but let’s just say the most exciting thing about the whole spectacle isn’t happening on the stage—but above the audience—and that means sitting in the middle to back of the theater will give you a better view of the aerial action.

Get an Express Pass

Sure, Express Passes run about $170 on top of a regular park ticket (which starts at $134 per day), but if you can manage it, it can mean the difference between riding a few rides the whole day—and riding all of them. Express Pass lines let you whisk past the masses to the front of the line.

The only downside? Not all Epic rides take Express Passes. Currently, Express Passes are accepted at all of the rides except for the Ministry of Magic (which does a “Virtual Queue,” meaning guests can reserve a spot in line through the Universal app), Dragon Racers Rally, and Mine-Cart Madness.

SheBuysTravel Tip: The best way to get Express Passes for your whole crew is to stay at one of the luxe Loews properties at Universal – Hard Rock Hotel at Universal Orlando, Loews Portofino Bay Hotel or Loews Royal Pacific Resort. A night at one of those hotels can be pricey, but its biggest perk is Unlimited Express Passes for everyone staying in the room. And best of all, the pass are good for the day you check in and the day you check out – two days’ worth of faster-line access for one night’s stay. For a family of four, that can mean you’ll actually save money by booking the pricey room.

Some Souvenirs are Worth the Price

A selection of Power-Up Bands at Universal's Epic Universe.
Power-Up bands are just one of the many souvenirs that can be used within Epic Universe to unlock special activities and surprises. Photo credit: Universal Orlando Resort.

If you’re a parent and you can get through a theme park without buying your kids at least a few souvenirs, props to you. But if you’ve prepped your wallet for the barrage of begging you’ll likely face, here are two things that might be worth the purchase:

  • Power-Up Bands ($40) – These tech bracelets turn the physical land of Super Nintendo World into a real-life video game, unlocking myriad challenges that tiny gamers will love (it also gives you and your kids a good chunk of time where you won’t have to be waiting in line for a ride!). Collect digital coins, earn stamps, complete interactive Key Challenges, and unlock a special Bowser Jr. boss battle. The bands can also track your achievements in the Universal app, let you compete on leaderboards, and even function as amiibo for Nintendo Switch games at home.
  • Interactive Wands ($65 and up) – These ornately designed wands let you cast spells that trigger magical effects throughout Hogsmeade, Diagon Alley, and the new Ministry of Magic area. Chant “Lumos” to light up a shop window, “Incendio” to ignite magical flames, and “Ventus” to summon gusts of wind—while also tracking achievements, earning house points, and unlocking exclusive adventures through the Universal Orlando app.

SheBuysTravel Tip: The bands and wands can also be used at Universal Orlando Resort, Universal Studios Hollywood, Universal Studios Japan, and Universal Studios Beijing.

If you’ve ever taken a family vacation to LEGOLAND Florida, just wait until you visit during the holiday season.

With colorful themed sculptures, festive performances, seasonal treats, photos with holiday characters and trees wrapped in glittering lights, LEGOLAND Florida is transformed into a winter wonderland each November and December for its annual Holidays at LEGOLAND, presented by the Hallmark Channel.

This month, we took our three children (ages 5, 5 and 8) and nephew (age 6) on a trip to LEGOLAND Florida to experience the park’s annual holiday celebration.

Having visited in August, I knew we were in for a weekend of nonstop fun. But a cousins’ trip in December added an extra dose of magic; it was a vacation the kids will never forget.

Here are some can’t-miss highlights from our recent trip, and what to know when planning a holiday vacation to LEGOLAND Florida.

Marvel at the all-new LEGO Christmas tree

A 32-foot-tall beauty, LEGOLAND Florida has a dazzling new Christmas tree this year. Made from nearly 365,000 LEGO and DUPLO bricks, the 10,000-pound sculpture took Master Model Builders more than 2,800 hours to build. Topping the tree is a LEGO star built from 5,200 bricks.

At night, the Christmas tree and its surrounding square are brilliantly lit, showcasing the tree’s bright green hue and colorful ornaments created entirely from bricks. The kids loved admiring the display and posing for photos in front of it.

SheBuysTravel tip: The tree looks completely different during the day and night; make time to see it both during daylight and after sunset.

Get into the holiday spirit with exclusive performances and shows

The holidays abound with festive shows at LEGOLAND Florida, featuring both new and returning shows.

New this year in Fun Town is the Elf Training Academy (an adorable show perfect for little ones) and the Holly Hype Dance Party, featuring LEGO Reindeer Girl. Inside Fun Town Theater, LEGO Gingerbread Man can be found in The Very Merry Mix-up.

In LEGO Kingdoms, we caught the Festival of Flurries performance: a high-energy song and dance revue featuring LEGO Snowman and six performers in shimmery winter outfits. The kids danced and sang along to the songs, and everyone went wild when “snow” began to fall and silvery streamers floated to the ground, concluding the show.

Snack your way through the park with holiday-themed food and beverage offerings

LEGOLAND Florida boasts food and beverage treats (such as Granny’s Apple Fries) that can’t be found anywhere else. But during the holiday season, the options expand to include limited-time delights.

The park’s seasonal options include a Season’s Greetings Swirl at Kingdom Cones, made with cherry-flavored Dole soft-serve ice cream served in a Belgian chocolate cone and topped with a fondant star, or a Winter Warmer Bread Bowl at Dragon’s Den, made with house-made chili and served inside a sourdough bread bowl, topped with melted cheddar cheese and green onions.

Our favorite dessert was The Christmas Crepe at Ice Cream and Shakes: a made-to-order Christmas Tree-shaped green crepe filled with Nutella and bananas and topped with sliced strawberries, candy-coated chocolates and a fondant star.

Take photos with festive characters and holiday LEGO creations

While we ran out of time to meet LEGO Santa, we did meet other cheerful characters throughout our visit, including stilt-walking reindeer and nutcrackers, friendly elves, LEGO Snowman and LEGO Gingerbread Man.

We particularly enjoyed our visit with LEGO Nutcracker in DUPLO Valley, where the Nutcracker spent time “talking” with the kids, answering their questions via animated gestures. We also took pictures sitting in a LEGO sleigh (complete with reindeer!) and a giant wreath made out of LEGO bricks.

The cousins also loved the chance to trade in their Minifigures for holiday-themed minifigures at the Minifigure trading wall at The Legoland Story, including Santa and a smiling snowman.

Build a holiday creation with LEGO building stations throughout the park

One of the best features of LEGOLAND Florida is its spaces meant for hands-on building activities, and the holiday festivities take this to the next level.

At building stations around the park, our kids built giant candy canes with LEGO bricks and participated in a Build to Give workshop, where they created heart-shaped LEGO creations as part of the LEGO Group’s global initiative to bring joy to children in need.

Our favorite station was a sleigh-building activity in LEGO Kingdoms, where the kids built their own competition sleighs out of LEGO bricks. While none of their creations ultimately won, the kids had a blast building and engineering their sleighs.

Write and send letters to the North Pole

Do not forget to write letters to Santa at LEGOLAND Florida’s North Pole Postal Service.

Of all the memories we made on the trip, writing and sending letters to Santa tops my list.

Staffed by friendly elves, the park’s North Pole Postal Service offers a cozy space for kids to write and seal their letters to Santa, then enter a separate room to “mail” the letters and watch on a screen as LEGO Santa or LEGO Mrs. Claus receives the letters.

Especially magical for younger children, the process was easy and the letters were precious. One of our children drew Santa an elaborate picture, and the kids all rang a celebratory bell when each of their letters was sealed and ready to be sent.

Enjoy the holiday décor and great weather

Amazing views of holiday lights and decorations at LEGOLAND Florida.

The holidays are a gorgeous time of year to visit LEGOLAND Florida. The wintery décor around the parks is festive and whimsical, with seasonal sculptures made from thousands of tiny LEGO bricks and trees swathed in strings of glowing lights.

In the park’s centrally-located MINILAND USA – an expansive outdoor display built from over 32 million LEGO® bricks – our kids were thrilled to find that mischievous elves had created festive fun in the miniature world, adding temporary holiday scenes and antics to the town squares and street corners.

The winter weather, too, is wonderful. With cooler weather and shorter days, the experience of walking around a Florida amusement park in November or December is a completely different experience from visiting during the hot summer months. The weather was in the ‘60s with clear skies and sunshine during our visit, making for a beautiful day of holiday fun.

Stay at a LEGOLAND resort for even more festivities

To continue the seasonal experience, stay onsite at one of LEGOLAND® Florida’s fully themed hotels. Just steps from the park’s entrance are the ultra-walkable LEGOLAND Hotel and Pirate Island Hotel, while the Lakeview LEGOLAND Beach Retreat is a short shuttle ride away.

All three of the hotels are designed specifically for young children, with a separate kids’ sleeping area in each room, nightly kids’ entertainment, a full schedule of activities, countless LEGO®-themed play areas, swimming pools, a free all-you-can-eat hot breakfast, restaurants and more.

We stayed at LEGOLAND Hotel, with a lobby that had been transformed with holiday garlands and a Christmas tree made from LEGO bricks. At the hotel’s Skyline lounge, we joined other families for Santa’s Cookie Workshop: the chance to decorate a giant gingerbread man with icing, colorful gumdrops and treats.

SheBuysTravel tip: Breakfast is included with each stay and guests can choose where to eat. Since LEGOLAND Hotel and Pirate Island Hotel are connected, we opted for a pirate-themed holiday breakfast at the hotel’s Shipwreck Restaurant, just a short walk through the lobby of our own hotel.

Enjoy a nightly New Year’s Eve celebration for kids on select dates

Happening nightly from December 26 through 31, families can ring in the New Year at Legoland Florida with the park’s Kids’ New Year’s Eve celebration, featuring a nightly 3D LEGO brick-bursting fireworks show and a DJ dance party.

For one night only on December 31, guests can also participate in a New Year’s Eve countdown and the park’s signature “brick drop” near Lake Eloise, as well as a special finale. All festivities are scheduled for earlier in the evening, allowing families to celebrate together hours before midnight.

The festivities at LEGOLAND Florida take place each holiday season; this year, Holidays at LEGOLAND (presented by the Hallmark channel) is held on select dates from November 29 through December 31.

LEGOLAND Florida Resort is located southwest of Orlando at One LEGOLAND Way in Winter Haven, Florida, 33884.

The park is an hour by car from either the Orlando International Airport, Orlando Brightline Station or Tampa International Airport; its closest train station is the Lakeland Amtrak station. Parking is included for guests of LEGOLAND Resort hotels (and select annual passholders); all other vehicles will pay a daily parking fee that starts at $35 per day.

SheBuysTravel Tip: The holiday season is a great time to score extra savings at LEGOLAND Florida, with multiple holiday ticket-and-hotel package options available for the park’s fully themed onsite hotels. Florida and Georgia residents save an extra 20 percent on rooms; check the park’s website for the latest deals.
