Think it’s impossible to travel as a family without checking bags? Think again. It’s possible. Even with kids—and yes, even for a full week. No baggage fees, no wasted time at the carousel, and no panicked searches for lost luggage.

I’ve been flying carry-on only since my two were in preschool. Here’s everything I’ve learned from years of traveling light with a husband and two kids in tow. If, like me, you’re flying with two adults and two kids, that equals four carry-ons and four personal items. That’s plenty of packing space to have everything you need for a week’s vacation, without the baggage fees. or the all-too-real chance of the airlines losing your luggage.

The Key to Packing Light with Kids

The key to packing light is teaching kids to pull their own weight. Kids as young as 4 can push a lightweight four-wheel spinner carry-on like this one from Samsonite.  Even preschoolers are used to wearing backpacks. Pack them with the supplies the kids will need to stay happy before, during and after the flight, from iPads to coloring books and snacks. (Travel is NOT the time to be stingy about electronics. Be sure they’re fully charged to avoid mid-movie meltdowns.)

Treat your tweens and teens like adults and let them pack their own stuff, strictly enforcing the carry-on-only rule. Just be sure to do a bag check before you leave the house to make sure they packed enough underwear along with their electronics!

SheBuysTravel Tip: Don’t cheap out on your carry-on. The best laid plans — and packed bags — are worth nothing when a wheel breaks or the handle comes off. Stick with the best luggage brands to ensure durability.

It’s All About Packing Smart

Everyone who buys a ticket is entitled to board with one small personal item that fits under the seat in front of you and one carry-on that fits in the overhead bin. (Yes, if you happen to be the last person on board, there’s a chance the overhead bin space will be full. If that’s the case, you’ll have to gate-check your bags. While there is always a risk the bags will get lost in transit, the good news is that you likely won’t be charged the checked bag fee.)

Here’s how to make the most of all of that luggage space.

  • Wear your heaviest stuff on the plane — jeans, hiking boots, bulky sweater, puffy coat. It will save room in your carry-on luggage and keep you warm on a chilly flight.
  • Pack several thin layers for warmth rather than one bulky thing.
  • Invest in compression packing cubes. . I use these from Gonex. They let me fit more in less space. As an added bonus, packing cubes can reduce the wrinkles to save me ironing time in the hotel.
  • Plan what everyone will wear to ensure every piece of clothing can do double or triple duty.
  • Pack travel-friendly Tide laundry detergent packets so you can wash things in the hotel sink if necessary. Of, if your room has a whirlpool tub, put the clothes and Tide in there and turn on the jets. Instant wash machine!
  • Limit everyone to packing one pair of shoes and one pair of flip-flops or sandals. That’s it. With the pair on your feet, that makes three, which should be plenty for a week away.

Carry-on Packing Checklist

There are two parts to this:

  • The carry-on bag
  • The personal item

We’ll tackle each one separately.

Carry-on-Only Packing List: the 21-Inch Suitcase

This is where you want all of the stuff you’ll need at your destination. It might include any of the following, but not all. Obviously, if you’re going somewhere cold, you’ll want a warm hat and gloves. If you’re headed to the beach, pack a sun hat instead.

Toiletries

This section is sponsored by Ulta Beauty.

You’re carrying on this suitcase, so the critical thing to remember is the TSA 3-1-1 rule. No more than three ounces per product. That’s where mini sizes, like these from Ulta, are the answer. And, whenever possible, choose products that do double duty, like this CC+ color-correcting hydrating serum that also is a sunscreen with 50 SPF.

Extras to Pack

What to Pack in Your Personal Item

First, think about what kind of “personal item” you want to take. I know most people (me included) choose a backpack. It can carry a lot and it’s great for hands-free travel when you’re also wrangling kids and their carry-ons. Others prefer a big cloth bag like this one from Ecokaki because it’s flexible and can be tucked under the seat, but can easily be pulled out and zipped open to see everything inside.

Whatever personal item you choose, here’s what to pack inside:

  • Costume jewelry (leave the expensive stuff at home)
  • Passport/visa
  • Copies of important travel documents
  • Identification
  • Credit cards (bring two, just in case)
  • Cell phone
  • Boarding pass/tickets
  • Medical insurance card
  • Electronics chargers — keeping the kids charged up in key to keeping them happy through long flights and car ries.
  • Extra power supply
  • Power strip — I have traveled the world with this one from Anker.
  • Itinerary
  • Travel insurance card
  • Power converter — this one works from the UK to Australia
  • Wallet
  • Prescription medications (2 times as much as you’ll need, just in case)
  • Cash
  • Earplanes (indispensable when you’re flying with a head cold)
  • Ear plugs
  • Eye mask
  • Headphones
  • Tide stick stain remover
  • Lip balm
  • Motrin
  • Benadryl
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Clorox disinfecting cleaning wipes for cleaning the germy spots on the airplane.
  • Inflatable neck pillow
  • Baby wipes for cleaning little hands

Sturgis is a rite of passage, a road trip on every motorcyclist’s bucket list – and yes, especially for women. I’ve fired up my Harley and set off for the ride of my life to Sturgis nearly a dozen times.

I’ve experienced intense heat, pouring rain, even snow – and made some mistakes along the way, especially with packing.  I’ve overpacked and I’ve underpacked.

So, once you know your bike is ready for Sturgis, the next big question is: What to actually pack for the Sturgis Bike Rally? Read on for my comprehensive motorcycle packing guide for women.

Get 365 days of travel inspiration delivered right to your inbox!

What Should a Woman Pack for Sturgis?

Packing for a motorcycle road trip requires strategic planning – there’s no option for checking a bag. A woman motorcycle rider has to balance practicality, comfort, and style with limited space.

This guide is designed to help you pack efficiently, ride confidently, and embrace the freedom of the open road.:

Packing Efficiently: Less Is More

Motorcycle travel demands minimalism. Every item should earn its place in your saddlebags. Focus on:

  • Multi-use items: Think convertible clothing, compact gear, and dual-purpose tools. No, you do not need fresh outfits for each day. Choose these jeans to ride in comfort and these for a more fashionable look when walking around Sturgis. Both pairs you can re-wear to save space. Add this spicy, lightweight Faux Leather Cropped Shirket to your look.
  • Layering: Weather can change quickly—layers keep you adaptable.
  • Weight distribution: Keep heavier items low and centered to maintain balance.
  • Roll and pack: Rolling conserves space – so important with the limited space on a motorcycle.

Pre-Plan Packing Tip: Lay out your clothes according to the day, e.g. riding all day vs. exploring the streets of Sturgis.

Clothing Essentials

Don't forget to pack your rain gear!
Rain will happen. Don’t forget your rain gear. Photo credit: Diana Rowe

Fashion takes a backseat when riding a motorcycle. Function meets fashion when you’re on two wheels. Here’s what to bring:

  • Base layers: Moisture-wicking tops and leggings for comfort under gear.
  • Riding gear: Safety first. Leather jacket and pants, gloves, and boots—water-proofed! Consider this timeless and fashionable Tash leather jacket from SESS RAY.

  • Casual wear: One or two outfits for off-bike activities (lightweight and wrinkle-resistant).
  • Rain gear: A compact waterproof layer is a must. From experience, spend money on rain gear, because a soaking wet female rider is not a happy woman. My best friend and I (literally) were drenched when riding through Nebraska, and if not for our high-end rain gear, we would have been more miserable.
  • Accessories: Helmet hair is real. Bring bandanas or your favorite hat for sun protection and to hide helmet hair.

How to Keep Clothes and Gear Dry on a Motorcycle Trip?

This question is asked frequently, and it’s simple:

  • Waterproof Motorcycle Bags: Spend your money on waterproof motorcycle bags with covers.
  • Trash Bags: Seriously. Line the bottom of your bag with cheap kitchen trash bags, even with waterproof bags. Then, use those trash bags for dirty clothes and place them on the bottom, clean on the top.

Toiletries & Personal Care

Be kind to your face when riding. Pack Lea Black Beauty ® Lip Balm and Sunscreen.

Compact and travel-friendly is the name of the game, but hey, women riders still want to look presentable, right?

  • Travel-size toiletries: Shampoo, conditioner, body wash, toothpaste. You can always buy more.
  • Feminine hygiene: Pack what you need, plus extras for remote areas.
  • Sunscreen & lip balm: Wind and sun exposure are no joke. Choose wisely as your skin and lips will thank you. We suggest Lea Black Beauty® luxury lip balm, with on-the-go hydration; protection with d’Alba SPF 50 Waterfull Essence Sun Cream, and for quick application, consider Round Lab Birch with Moisturizing SPF 50 Sunstick.
  • Moisturizer. You’ll need it after a long ride. This moisturizing skin exfoliant from Lea Black Beauty comes in an easy-to-pack four-ounce bottle.
  • Minimal makeup: If you wear it, opt for multi-use products. Let’s be honest: when you’ve ridden 250+ miles, you likely won’t care about makeup. Just saying.

Gear & Tools

Be prepared, not overloaded:

  • Tool kit: Basic tools for minor repairs (check your bike’s manual). My husband bought me a mini-tool kit, small enough not to take up too much room, but still with the necessary tools.
  • Tire repair kit: A compact kit like this one is perfect.
  • First aid kit: Include pain relievers, bandages, and personal meds. This is SO important. I’m allergic to bee stings, and as I was riding north on I-25, almost to Cheyenne, Wyoming, a bee came out of nowhere, somehow stung me just below my helmet. I didn’t have my EpiPen, nor did I have Benadryl. Fortunately, we made it into town, purchased Benadryl, which worked, and only delayed us an hour.
  • Navigation: GPS, phone mount, but I highly recommend paper maps as backup. Because when technology fails in a remote area, you will thank me.

Tech & Connectivity

Stay connected and capture the journey:

Food & Hydration

Fuel your body as well as your bike:

  • Water bottle or hydration pack: Stay hydrated, especially in hot weather.
  • Snacks: Protein bars, nuts and dried fruit are easy to pack and energizing.
  • Compact stove or utensils: Optional, but great for longer trips.

Women-Specific Tips

  • Pack for confidence: Bring what makes you feel good—whether it’s a favorite lipstick or a cozy hoodie.
  • Hair care: Dry shampoo, travel brush and hair ties go a long way.
  • Safety: Share your route with someone, or ride with a trustworthy, seasoned woman rider friend! (Sorry, my friend, Vicki, is taken!) Carry ID and trust your instincts! I was riding with my husband, who had a small motorcycle bag tied to the top of his larger bag. Somehow, it came loose along the ride and fell off.

We backtracked, trying to find it, without luck. It contained our cell phones, credit cards, cameras, some cash, our itinerary, and our emergency numbers. We continued on to Sturgis, met up with friends and called our family, who had received a call from another biker couple who found our bag. We met up with them to pick it up. Everything was in there!

Final Thoughts

Packing for a motorcycle trip as a woman does present challenges, but it isn’t about sacrificing comfort or style. It’s about embracing your Sturgis motorcycle adventure with confidence and preparation. With the right gear and mindset, you’ll be ready to hit the road and make every mile unforgettable.

I’ve been to Vegas on grownups-only trips and also visited Vegas with kids. No matter who you’re going with or what you’re going to do on your Vegas trip, you likely will only be there for a few days. You’re going to want to hit the ground running, which means you need to know what to wear in Vegas.

Vegas Packing List – Beauty Products

This section is sponsored by Ulta Beauty.

You will want to look your best in the Land of Glam, so don’t skimp on the beauty products. Plus, it’s a desert, so you’ll need a serious skincare routine if you want to look your best.

Here are the brand name products you should pack – all on sale now and available in TSA-friendly travel sizes from Ulta:

1. Vegas Packing List – Clothing

My general rule for packing clothing for Vegas is to pack two outfits per day, one for daytime and one for evening. Even if you’re not dressing up for your evening activity you’ll probably want to change clothes since what you wore during the day might be sweaty or smoky.

Also, do your homework about the dress code at your hotel and any others you’re going to visit.

Going Out Clothes

If you’re going to one of the high-end shows, to a nightclub or out to a nice dinner, you’re going to want a dressier outfit or something that can be accessorized to be dressier.

Anything made out of black jersey is my go-to because it’s easy to dress up or down. I found this adorable jumpsuit and a cold shoulder dress on Amazon, both at very reasonable price points. Pair with rhinestone sandals or other dressy shoes and some red lipstick and you have the perfect easy-to-pack outfit for an upscale dinner.

Casual Clothes

Dress for the weather. Vegas is hot much of the year but the winter months can be chilly. Chek the weather forecast before you go. Have at least one warmer outfit. Leggings and a cardigan or jeans and a hooded sweater or sweatshirt are stylish and comfortable. Also check out the section below on gear for adventure side trips for some great layering ideas.

Here are some of our favorites:

Sundresses and a light sweater are also great for Vegas and look smart with a pair of tennis shoes or comfortable sandals. We like this Amazon find – Karundo short-sleeved print dress – that comes in several colors

Workout Clothes

If you’re meticulous about not skipping a workout while you’re in Vegas, pack your gym clothes. Not 100 percent sure you’ll actually make it to the gym? Leave your workout clothes at home and get your exercise walking up and down the Strip.

If you do pack workout gear, a pair of black leggings can do double duty as travel clothes or an outfit on another day. These leggings from Gym People have pockets, which is always a plus.

Undergarments

At least one set per person for each day. I like wicking hot-weather undergarments because they’re more comfortable in the heat. They also dry quickly if you need to hand wash.

I recommend the Ex Officio brand of underwear for travelers – very quick drying. They’re on the pricier side but I think they’re worth it.

Light Jacket or Sweater

You’ll need something to put on inside the air-conditioned buildings. Here are some stylish, lightweight outerwear options that will go with multiple outfits. We like:

the family pool at Resorts World Las Vegas hotel
Pack swimsuits! Las Vegas is filled with great pools, like this one at Resorts World. Photo credit: Cindy Richards

Bathing Suit

No Vegas packing list would be complete without swimwear. If you anticipate lounging around the pool a lot, pack more than one swimsuit so you’ll always have a dry one.

Amazon is my favorite place to buy swimsuits. I’ve had very good luck with fit and quality and you can’t beat the prices like this women’s high waisted two piece that comes in various colors and patterns.

Amazon also carries the CupShe brand, which I’ve never been disappointed with. This color blocked one piece is in my Amazon cart right now.

Rash Guard

If you wear these consistently while you’re in the water, pack a spare so you’ll always have a dry one. This cute ladies two-piece suit has a rash guard with a built-in bra for maximum sun protection.

Bathing Suit Coverup

Bring a nice coverup or extra sundress. The shortest route to the hotel pool might be through a casino and most casinos have dress codes. Plus, they usually are super air-conditioned, so you likely will be freezing if you try to walk through the casinos in a wet swimsuit!

I have this sleeveless dress with pockets in multiple colors. It can also be accessorized to wear as a casual dress or even out to a casual dinner.

Flip Flops

I pack a pair of flip flops (or other shoes that easily slip on, like Crocs) for the pool.

I swear by Reefs flip flops – I’ve owned two pair and they last forever and can take a lot. They also make men’s sandals and flip flops.

Sun Hat

Everyone will need a sun hat. The desert rays can be very intense. I usually pack a wide-brim sun hat and a baseball cap so I can have options for different outfits.

I love this colorful beach hat from Amazon and it’s at a super price. If you take a hat like this, you probably want to wear or carry it on the plane versus putting it in your suitcase so it doesn’t get crushed.

Sunglasses

Remember what I said about the intensity of the Las Vegas sunshine? Everyone, including the little ones, will need to protect their eyes from the harsh UV rays.

Here are a few stylish choices:

Amazon has kids’ sunglasses at every price point.

If you or the kids are prone to losing your sunnies, pack an extra pair.

People walking along the Strip in Las Vegas

2. Comfortable Walking Shoes – a Vegas Packing List Essential

My hard-and-fast packing rule is not to pack too many shoes. Shoes take up the most space in your luggage. I recommend two pairs of walking shoes. You will be walking more than you think. Buildings on the Strip that look nearby are deceptively far away. You’ll be walking every day you’re there and your feet will be happy if you can switch out your shoes.

If you can make one pair of shoes do double duty — walking miles during the day and then pairing with a dressier outfit for the evening, you get a gold star. But that doesn’t work for me. I like my high heels if I’m going to get really dressed up.

Here are some stylish and comfortable walking shoes our SheBuysTravels love.

3. Bags

This Vegas packing list outlines the different bag options you will need besides your personal luggage.

Belt Bag

Yes, they’re back. They’re very practical, especially for parents who need to be hands-free, and they’re less tempting to pickpockets as you walk among the crowds on the Strip.

This pack from Patagonia looks sturdy and long-lasting, if not particularly exciting or stylish.

Looking for something more fashionable? Amazon and Target have more options, like this sparkly one from Amazon.

Cute Backpack or Day Bag

I like having a small backpack when I’m spending the day sightseeing. My day bag holds my water bottle, hand sanitizer and small purchases. Keep valuables on your person in a secure front pocket.

This lightweight backpack from Osprey is functional and perfect for moms. It might be bigger than what you’d want to carry all day but it can do double duty as a diaper bag if you need one.

I also really like this little foldup backpack. The pouch is so tiny and easy to pack. The backpack is small but functional.

Parents of grade school kids and tweens:- this poppit backpack is sure to be a hit.

Pool Bag

I usually use my day bag for this, but you may want an additional/larger bag for the pool. We like this roomy one. It comes in several cute prints and can also work as a diaper bag or carry on.

I didn’t include pool toys/inflatables on this Vegas packing list. These are usually short trips and it is easy to get weighed down with extras like toys.

If you really want to pack pool toys, these fun dive sticks don’t take up much space.

Small Cooler

I always pack a small, soft insulated cooler for day trips and to carry drinks and snacks to the pool, if the hotel allows that. Some pools have rules against outside food and drink, but if you can get away with packing some drinks and snacks, this cooler is nice and roomy.

4. Electronics

This Vegas packing list doesn’t include a whole lot of electronics because you won’t need them. Here’s what you will need.

Charging cables and portable charger

For Vegas, I recommend purse-size chargers/portable phone chargers. This handy two-pack is available on Amazon. It easily fits into a pocket or small purse and bonus: it has a built-in flashlight.

I also recommend this compact charging station for the hotel room. It has four electrical outlets and three USB ports. It’s easy to pack two if you have a large family – or a lot of devices.

Make sure you have one charging cable per device, per person and one power supply per person. Pack an extra phone charging cable that can be shared, just in case. It seems like someone always forgets or loses theirs.

Tablet/Kindle

These are great for keeping the kids entertained during travel and downtime. For poolside reading, I love my Kindle Paperwhite.

Kindle Fire is a great tablet for kids. You’ll often see specials for these during peak shopping times, such as holiday sales or Prime Day.

5. Government Issued ID

Make sure you don’t leave home without your driver’s license, passport or other documentation that can prove who you are and how old you are. Your trip to Vegas is probably going to be a bust if you can’t get into the casinos because you don’t have an ID.

If you’re flying, you won’t get very far without this but if you’re road tripping it, double check to make sure all adults have ID.

6. Miscellaneous Items

Contact lens case and solution

This handy travel case holds contact lens supplies and glasses. You might find your eyes extra irritated by the smoke in the casinos. Even if you wear contacts all the time, pack your glasses just in case.

Landry detergent

Powdered laundry detergent is easy to pack in a plastic bag or small plastic container. Even if you don’t plan to do laundry, pack it so you’ll have it in case you need to unexpectedly wash something in the sink.

Tide Pens

These compact pens are great for spot treating small stains.

Refillable Water Bottle

One per person.

Vegas Packing List
We pack one water bottle per person for adventures off the Strip + for drinking in the hotel room. Photo credit: Jill Robbins

On our last Vegas trip, we used the Crazy Cap water bottle. The cap uses UV rays to clean and disinfect water, which you probably won’t need, but it also disinfects surfaces, which can be handy for planes or hotel rooms.

These collapsible water bottles are also nice if you’re working to minimize space.

Water Flavor Mix-Ins

Flavor mix ins are easy to carry and (usually) healthier than soda.

Ear Plugs

You may not plan on having a wild and noisy Vegas trip but your neighbors might! These reusable silicone earplugs come in a package of five with a handy carrying case.

Eye Mask

Use this alone or in combination with the earplugs. This three pack of silk sleeping masks is great for travel.

White Noise Machine or App

There are dozens of free white noise apps available to download. Here’s a battery powered white noise machine that doesn’t take up a ton of room.

Large Ziploc Bags for Dirty Clothes

I hate the smell of smoke on my clothes but that’s inevitable in Vegas. I like putting dirty clothes into these gallon-sized Ziploc bags to keep any tobacco reek out of my suitcase.

Wipes

Wipes are for more than just babies – they’re great to do a quick hand and face wash or to wipe down surfaces.

Are you road tripping to Vegas with a baby? Here’s what you need to know.

Snacks

Easy snacks include granola bars, nuts, fruit leather, tuna (it’s too smelly to eat on the plane), jerky or sturdy fruit that doesn’t bruise easily or get mushy.

If you plan to make simple meals in your hotel room, instant oatmeal or single-serve containers of soup or pasta are easy to pack. Don’t forget plastic utensils if you pack food you can’t eat with your hands.

7. Toiletries

Your mileage will vary and you may use more products than I’ve listed here, but these are the basics for your toiletry bag. Whatever you use daily, make sure you don’t forget it. While you can probably buy a replacement at your hotel or at one of the drugstores on the Strip, you’re going to pay Vegas prices.

Sunscreen

The sun is strong in Vegas. Wear your sunscreen! Make sure you also pack something to treat sunburn, like aloe vera gel.

Hangover Remedies

Even if you think your party-it-up days are over now that you travel with kids, you’ll probably drink more alcohol than you usually do in Vegas. Popular hangover remedies include Alka Seltzer, Pedialyte power packs, Ibuprofen and Tums.

Prescription Medication

This includes birth control. What happens in Vegas might come home with you if you forget.

Blister Treatment

Band-Aids work great, but moleskin works better. These adhesives are precut so you won’t need to worry about packing scissors.

Mini First Aid Kit

Although the hangover remedies and blister treatments cover many potential ailments, I recommend throwing in some anti-bacterial ointment, such as Neosporin, along with a few other basic first aid supplies, and a handful of cough drops.

These pre-done first aid kits are handy, but I like to put my first aid/medical supplies in a larger makeup pouch so I have a little bit of everything.

Makeup Removal Wipes

You might be up late, but don’t forget to take your makeup off. Add these wipes to your Vegas packing list and it will be easy to clean your face at the end of the evening.

Skincare Regimen

This is the kit I have. It helps keep me on track with my regular skincare without taking up a ton of room in my bag.

Makeup Kit

Pare down your makeup to the essentials and things you know you’ll wear. You probably don’t need six different lipstick choices for a four-day trip.

I like this set of three bags – you can pick which one to use for your makeup based on how much you wear. The other bags can be used for medications or other toiletries.

Travel Size Hair Brush

Most hairstyles can handle a smaller size brush for a few days.

Ponytail Elastics and Bobby Pins

I am not very ambitious with my hair when I’m traveling with kids, especially if I’m going to a hot weather climate. Amazon has a lot of cute elastics and pins that you can use to create fun ponytails or updos that get your hair off your neck.

Hair Styling Products

If you don’t want to use the shampoo and conditioner provided by the hotel, get some small, refillable bottles and bring your own. The bottles from this kit work great, as do these collapsible bottles.

Mini Flat Iron or Curling Iron

Heat styling tools take up room in your bags. Most hotels have a hairdryer so unless you’re totally in love with your Dyson, use what is already there.

This cordless mini flat iron is very handy for travel.

Lip Balm

Choose one with SPF for max protection. Sun Bum has 30 SPF and even has tinted options.

Feminine Products

Even if you’re not expecting your period, put a small supply (or your menstrual cup) on your Vegas packing list. Just in case.

8. Packing for an Adventure Beyond Las Vegas

There are lots of options for fun day trips from Las Vegas. Death Valley is about a two hour drive. Red Rock Canyon is less than half hour from the Strip. There are other options, such as the Grand Canyon, depending on how much time you have.

You’ll need sturdy shoes (good tennis shoes work) and outdoor clothing (layers). You’ll also need extra hydration and extra power supply for your devices.

Here’s a list of some of our favorite clothing suitable for these kinds of adventures.

What NOT to Pack for Las Vegas

Here are a few things that I recommend NOT be on your Vegas packing list.

Laptop

Are you 100 percent positive you’ll be working in Vegas? If the answer is no, leave your computer at home.

DSLR Camera

Most newer smartphones have great cameras. Unless you’re a pro or a serious hobby photographer, you probably won’t use your camera equipment.

Toys

An iPad or tablet is plenty to keep your kids entertained during downtime.

Fine Jewelry

Leave your expensive jewelry at home. If you’re married, wear your wedding band. If you need to spice up your outfit, throw in a scarf and some costume jewelry — a statement necklace and a pair of simple earrings that go with everything.

You know how the old saying goes – what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. While Sin City is called Sin City for a reason, with a little planning, preparation and this Vegas packing list, it can be a solid choice for a family travel destination. Have fun!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: What should I wear in Las Vegas?

A: Las Vegas is known for its hot weather, so it’s best to wear light, breathable clothing. During the day, shorts, tank tops, sundresses, and sandals are appropriate. At night, dressier attire is recommended for clubs, shows, and fancy restaurants. Don’t forget to bring comfortable shoes for all the walking you’ll be doing!

Q: What should I NOT bring to Las Vegas?

A: It’s important to note that some items are prohibited in Las Vegas casinos and hotels, such as weapons, drugs, and outside alcohol. Additionally, it’s best to avoid bringing expensive jewelry or valuables, as they can attract unwanted attention. Finally, be aware of the dress code for certain establishments, as some may not allow athletic wear or flip flops.

Q: What essentials should I pack for a Las Vegas trip?

A: In addition to the usual travel essentials like toiletries and chargers, there are a few items that are particularly useful in Las Vegas. These include sunscreen, a hat or visor, a refillable water bottle, comfortable walking shoes, and a light jacket or sweater for air-conditioned buildings. You may also want to bring a small cross-body bag or fanny pack to keep your hands free while exploring.

Q: What are some family-friendly activities in Las Vegas?

A: While Las Vegas is known for its nightlife and casinos, there are plenty of activities that are suitable for families with kids. Some popular options include visiting the Bellagio fountains, exploring the Shark Reef Aquarium at Mandalay Bay, riding the High Roller Ferris wheel, and checking out the Adventuredome theme park at Circus Circus. There are also plenty of outdoor activities nearby, such as hiking in Red Rock Canyon or visiting Hoover Dam.

Casual Tops and Shorts

Summer travel starts with shorts and breezy tops. The key is to feel cool and comfortable while looking cute and put together. That’s where the boho-cool vibe, breathable fabrics, soft hues, and flattering cuts of these options from Umgee come in.

Whether you prefer flutter sleeves, embroidery, or flowy tunic styles, Umgee tops are perfect for pairing with shorts during the day or resort pants in the evening. Just add a pair of statement earrings and you’re ready for dinner with a view.

When the right option is pairing that breezy top with cute casual shorts, the June Adel collection features comfy, stylish options that are easy to dress up or down.

We love the lightweight materials, soft textures, and neutral tones that go with everything. Whether you’re walking the boardwalk or exploring a beach town’s local markets, these shorts are an easy go-to all day long.

Get Water-Worthy

Look cute and protect your skin from the sun with a Rashguard swimsuit. Photo credit: WET Swimwear

My go-to weekend getaways almost always revolve around water — a beach, ocean, lake or really great pool, So I never leave home without the basics: a swimsuit or two, a cute cover-up, board shorts and a rashguard for playing in the sun.

Whether you’re swimming, surfing, or just spending a full day in the sun, a rashguard swimsuit from WET Swimwear offers a flattering fit and bold, fashion-forward designs that make sun safety seriously cool.

Weekend getaways mean packing light, which requires clothing that does double duty, like a silk caftan from Vanner House. You can throw it over your swimsuit as a cover-up at the pool and then wear it to dinner with wedges and statement earrings. Go ahead, pack two. You’ll live in them all weekend.

For active days in and around the water, a great pair of board shorts is essential. Photo credit: Maxine of Hollywood

These board shorts from Maxine of Hollywood provide more coverage than your typical bikini bottom without sacrificing style. They’re my choice when I’m being active in and around the water, paddleboarding, kayaking, or simply walking along the shoreline.

Chic Resortwear

Image1
These resort pants are the next best thing to wearing pajamas! Photo credit: La Blanca

I am fortunate enough to visit resorts several times a year — often enough that I have a section of my closet dedicated to resortwear. Then, when it’s time for my next trip, I simply pull those clothes off the hangers and fold them into my suitcase.

That section of the closet includes a couple of cute pairs of resort pants, fun jumpsuits and sun dresses and at least one lightweight sweater for cool evenings.

Lightweight, flowy resort pants like these from La Blanca can do triple duty on a weekend getaway. They are made for lounging in style — think bathing suit cover-up, beachside brunches, or post-swim cocktails. Their flattering silhouette makes them ideal for tucking in a tank top or pairing with a silk blouse. They’re also super easy to pack and wrinkle-resistant, which is a big plus when you’re living out of a weekend bag.

Image3
A chic jumpsuit like one of these from Elegance Miss is the holy grail of a summer travel wardrobe. Photo credit: Elegance Miss

I love, love, love a great fitting jumpsuit. They’re easy and make you look instantly put-together. Whether you’re heading out for an al fresco dinner or exploring a charming coastal town, a jumpsuit from Elegance Miss is the perfect mix of casual elegance and comfort.

Pair with sandals and a straw hat for daytime, or swap in wedges and a clutch for evening — either way, it’s a suitcase MVP.

Image6
Pack a linen blend cardigan for cool nights, chilly planes and overly air-conditioned restaurants. Photo credit: June Adel

Even in the height of summer, evenings near water can get breezy. Enter this linen blend cardigan by Umgee. Available at June Adel, this layer is both practical and polished — the kind of piece you’ll throw over your shoulders while watching fireworks on the beach or roasting marshmallows lakeside.

It’s light enough to pack without a second thought, and stylish enough to elevate any look.

Bonus Tips for a Smooth Weekend Getaway:

  • Keep your palette cohesive so all your pieces mix and match easily.
  • Invest in packing cubes (these are the ones I never leave home without to save space in my carry-on).
  • Limit your shoes to one pair of cute sandals, one pair of water/beach shoes and one pair of comfortable walking shoes.
  • Pack travel-size essentials and a small waterproof bag for beach or pool days.
  • Don’t forget the SPF!

Repeat after me: River cruises are not the same as ocean cruises when it comes to fashion. I learned this lesson after my first Viking vacation, sailing the Danube. I chose outfits for that trip based on my prior cruises aboard Norwegian and Princess, but quickly learned I’d committed two cardinal packing sins:

  1. I brought too much.
  2. I didn’t bring what I needed.

I’m a river cruise packing pro now, having cruised the Nile and Burgundy’s canals. Learn from my mistakes. Here are tips for packing a smart and stylish river cruise wardrobe.

Ready to explore the world? We can help.

Ocean vs River Cruise: What’s the Fashion Difference?

Think of your river cruise boat as a floating hotel where you relax at the end of busy touring days. This differs greatly from ocean cruise ships that offer 24/7 entertainment, dining and activities. I know many cruise lovers who never visit a port. For them, the cruise ship is the vacation destination.

Onboard a river cruise, there are no formal dinners, nightclubs or shows that require special occasion dresses. There are usually no fitness centers or pools. And you’ll be touring a lot on a river cruise. Comfy shoes and day outfits are essential to stay fresh.

What to Bring on a River Cruise

Young woman wearing printed linen beach pants and a crop top.
Coastal chic linen pants from Cali1850 come in a variety of patterns to match your wardrobe palette.

The good news is that it’s much easier to pack for a river cruise if you avoid overthinking and packing a lot of “just in case” items. For my Egyptian river cruise, I debated packing a second bathing suit for days until I reminded myself that I was the only person who dipped into the Viking hot tub, and I did so exactly once.

Outfit Essentials for Busy Excursion Days

Blond woman wearing a boho Umgee charcoal gray blouse.
Navy is an underrated neutral, IMO. This and other relaxed Umgee tops work on their own or paired with a tank top. Knot it up for one outfit, then wear it a third time with a scarf.

Pricing for river cruises routinely includes multiple daily excursions. I didn’t skip one on any of my cruises. The days were long, busy and wonderful. You’ll want comfortable outfits in breathable fabrics. And don’t forget layering separates to add and subtract as the temperature changes.

Consider packing the following for touring days on a river cruise:

Closeup of a chestnut colored leather crossbody bag with brushed gold accents
A leather cross-body with equestrian style from Vanner House is a secure and stylish option when touring.

You’re Only as Happy as Your Toes

Expect to log thousands of steps on a river cruise, possibly 20k or more. You’ll want comfortable walking shoes or sandals unless you want to be limping by Day Three. I favor Brooks running shoes or Teva sandals. They’re lightweight, supportive and come in enough color and style options so you can find one that’s cute enough.

After Dark on a River Cruise

Woman wearing a hat and a mini silk tunic with a bold primary colored print.
Pair this one-size-fits-most silk caftan from Vanner House with metallic flats for an easy, breezy evening look.

It’s super quiet when the sun goes down on a river cruise. Groups gather in the ship lounge for cocktails and conversation. Often, there’s a casual lecture about the next day’s sights. There might be entertainment, but it’s low-key, not a Broadway-style production like you’d find on an ocean cruise.

Dress for your river nights like you’re going out to a restaurant dinner on a Saturday with your best friends. Casual chic is the best way for me to describe the look, and here are the key elements:

  • Versatile dresses, dressy tops + trousers, jumpsuits.
  • Lightweight accessories like scarves and jewelry for color and sparkle.
  • One neutral sweater or light jacket for cooler evenings on deck.

Change your necklace and you can wear this black knit midi dress from Elegance Miss at least twice… but trade the heels for ballet flats for added comfort.

Be Prepared for Weather

Closeup of a black denim jacket featuring a floral silk insert
A lightweight stretch denim jacket with silk print accents from Vanner House is the ideal topper for cool cruise nights.

Sunscreen is your skin’s best friend. Pack one that smells great, so reapplying is a treat, not a chore. Your hat and sunglasses will feature prominently in your photos. Be sure to choose ones that make you feel great. You’ll project that confidence in your pics.

Other weather-ready items to pack include:

  • Quick-dry layers or packable jackets for rainy stops.
  • Activewear for biking or hiking excursions.
  • Bathing suit and swimsuit cover-up for a hot tub dip.

About that hot tub…if you choose to soak, you’ll likely be climbing into the tub in full view of your fellow passengers. I felt comfortable in a modest one-piece. And I was happy to have a cover-up to toss on for lounging on the deck.

Smiling woman wearing a blue beach coverup
La Blanca’s Deja Blue coverup has a matching one-piece swimsuit for a perfectly paired deck ensemble.
Smiling woman wearing a skirted black floral bathing suit
A Maxine of Hollywood swim dress is a great option for river cruising.

Additional River Cruise Packing Tips

  • Restrict your wardrobe color palette for mix-and-match outfit options.
  • Use packing cubes. On cruises, I remove them from my suitcase and put them in the stateroom dresser, so unpacking takes just a few minutes.
  • A travel steamer or wrinkle-release spray works wonders to freshen your clothes so you can get the most wear out of them.
  • A power adapter is essential for cruising abroad.

Because you don’t need multiple special occasion outfits, swimsuits and shoes, it’s quite possible to pack for your river cruise in a carry-on. However, if I’ve leveraged a free checked bag by using my airline credit card or upgraded my seat with points, I’ll bring a bigger bag. The extra room means I never have to say no to a souvenir.

Just because you’re Team Carryon doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice style. We walk you through packing light fashion so you look (and feel) stunning. With the right strategy and versatile pieces, you can create a chic travel wardrobe that fits into a single suitcase. Whether you’re off for a quick weekend getaway or hitting the road for a summer in Europe, this guide will help you be on the cutting edge of packing light fashion.

Follow these tips to build your perfect capsule wardrobe and enjoy stress-free packing on your next adventure!

Creating a Travel Capsule Wardrobe

When you start looking into packing light fashion the idea of a capsule wardrobe immediately comes up. A great go-to light packing list is based around key pieces that work together to create many outfits. To maximize outfits and get the most bang for your buck here’s how to build a travel capsule wardrobe for packing light.

  • Choose a Color Palette. Pick one or two base shades and two to three accent colors. The key is to avoid oddball colors that will be hard to match with other items. Many people start with a neutral color like black, white, beige, navy, or gray, and then add accent colors. This makes mixing and matching effortless.
  • Look for workhorse pieces that can be used in several ways. Versatile options like jumpsuits, dresses, tailored trousers, wide leg dark jeans, and solid dresses can be dressed up or down making them suitable for multiple occasions.
  • Play with the matches before you pack. Don’t wait until you’re packing to plan outfits. This is the time to start that Pinterest board or list outfits as you’re shopping. Planning outfits in advance ensures every piece serves multiple purposes (and is worn on multiple days).
  • On that same note: Spend a little bit more for those champion items. As you play with those outfit combos you’ll notice a few items that really pull their weight. Invest a little more in those pieces that will be worn in heavy rotation.

Our Top Two Pack-Light Picks: Splurges That Travel Well

Packing light and perfecting that travel capsule wardrobe is easier when you start with clothing that delivers. These versatile items are stylish and functional and we’re always going to make sure they are packed first!

Elegance Miss’s Parisian Dresses

These are the dresses you spin in slow-mo with romantic music and a stunning travel backdrop. I’m always willing to spend a little more for a good quality day-to-night dress. Plus there’s something really satisfying about being able to say, “Thanks. It’s from Paris,” when someone compliments you.

The Parisian dresses by Elegance Miss feature lightweight wrinkle-free fabrics that are easy to pack. Pair them with a pair of flats during the day or pop on a pair of heels at night for instant chic.

Options include various hem lengths from above knee to maxi (and everything in between) and a variety of sleeve styles. Personally I’m a sucker for the Ophelie and Kayz which are collared long sleeve styles with pockets. They scream elegance and sophistication. Versatile options are endless, including great black and navy midi dress styles.

La’ Agra’s Blossom Collection

As an ethical collection from a South Asian female designer we’re already rooting for La’ Agra. Billed as modern artisanal fashion, their Blossom Collection and its statement floral-inspired pieces are the perfect accents to any travel capsule wardrobe.

Several items in this collection stand out for their day-to-night versatility. The Dahlia Floral Strap top or The Petal Top would pair well with a classic pair of wide leg jeans for daytime art museums and shopping. At night, swap out the jeans for a skirt and heels for drinks and a meal on the waterfront. The back detail on the Dahlia and the lace-look sleeves on the Petal top will perk up any neutral.

Another great option that veers a little more luxe is the Slip Dress. With unique accents that create the visual snatched waist we all love, this dress is a winner. It’s a natural match for heels and an updo or could be dressed down with a jean jacket and some cute boots.

Favorite Essential Clothing Items for Light Packing

Woman stands in front of white closet doors holding her phone and posing for a photo with her hand on her hip. She is wearing a brown, sleeveless, wide-legged jumpsuit.
This Pretty Garden jumpsuit is pure comfort and cute too! Photo credit: Amazon

Every capsule wardrobe has some basics that really pull their weight. We recommend packing a few of these items in different colors. You can build so many outfits off of these pieces.

Women’s Everyday Jumpsuit

A jumpsuit is a travel wardrobe hero. Not only are they usually made out of lightweight wrinkle-resistant fabric but with so many necklines and color options, everyone is sure to find a favorite. We love these options that are perfect for a day of sightseeing or dinner out.

Cupshe Surplice Neckline Wide-Legged Jumpsuit

This option by Cupshe can be found at Target, Macy’s, and other major stores for around $50. There are multiple neutral colors available including navy, olive, and tan. The v-neck shoulder style and wide legged bottoms accentuate and flatter your waistline. This comfortable option looks cute on pretty much everyone.

Pretty Garden Summer Sleeveless Tank Jumpsuit

Pretty Garden is a go-to on Amazon for standard, comfortable options that are available in numerous colors. Their sleeveless tank jumpsuit is more casual and the perfect option for summer vacations and beach time.

Anrabess Sleeveless Women’s Jumpsuit

We love a great sleeveless jumpsuit for evening. This Anrabess Amazon option has a chic back cutout detail and comes in a wide variety of colors. Add a clutch and you’re ready to hit the town.

Tailored Trousers in a Stretchy Knit

A woman stands in front of a black concrete fountain posing in a white tank top and tan, wide-legged dress pants.
These pants from Lillusory are a great mix of style and comfort. Photo credit: Amazon

Stretchy knit trousers are the acceptable sweatpants of the dressy pant world. They are comfortable yet polished, making them perfect for packing light. Many brands make signature styles of these trousers. I’m sure we’ve all been bombarded with Halara ads. With so many options, picking the right one can be tricky. It’s a great opportunity to select a few staples. Picking one classic pair, one special waist detail pair, and one fun color will give you tons of outfit inspiration on the road.

Lillusory Wide Legged Dress Pants

These ones are so comfy that I gave them a pass on having visible elastic at the back waist which is usually a hard pass for me. I just pair them with a belt. If you’re working on the road or need to dress up, these pants are perfect. They look corporate and feel like lounge pants. Plus they don’t wrinkle and come in a ton of colors.

Magellan’s Wrinkle-Free Travel Pants

Magellan’s has made great travel clothing for years. If you’re more of a bootcut gal these are a great option that looks dressy but can be crammed into a suitcase and come out looking freshly pressed.

BTFBM High-Waist Palazzo Pant

These pants look classic but have a reverse pleat detail that adds attention and flair to a simple wardrobe piece. Multiple color options mean that you can pick the right neutral or bold for your wardrobe.

Lepuno Tie Waist Palazzo Pants

I love these as an option for evenings out. They look best paired with a fitted shirt tucked in. The waist tie is elegant and dresses up the entire look.

Wrap or Multi-Configuration Travel Dresses

A model stands in maroon sleeveless wrap dress. Only the bottom half of her face is showing.

A good wrap or multi configuration dress is worth its weight in gold. When one dress can single-handedly serve up 10+ different looks it makes packing light a breeze.

Grecian Multi-Configuration Maxi Dress

We love the versatility of this dress. You can twist and position the straps in a myriad of different styles. There are actually more than 24 ways to wear this dress!

This dress offers two looks in one—a space-saving dream!

72 Styles Infinity Dress

This option is often mentioned in wedding articles because of the versatility in both style and body type. It’s a popular bridesmaid dress, but we think this knee-length dress is also a great travel option.

Amazon Essentials Cap Sleeve Wrap Dress

There’s a reason why this dress consistently rates over 4 stars. It’s a classic, it fits well, and it comes in a multitude of colors. I love this as a dress-down option with sandals.

Lightweight Button Up Shirts

A blonde woman with long hair and sunglasses stands with hands in the pockets of white shorts, wearing a light blue button-down collared shirt and carrying a white handbag over her shoulder.

Linen and linen blends are breathable and stylish. It’s a great second layer for warmer climates. Paired with shorts or pants, you can look effortlessly chic with the right button up.

Short Sleeved V-Neck Linen Button Up

This stylish short sleeved button up is perfect to throw on with trousers or wear more casually over jean shorts.

Minibee Hi-Lo Roll Up Sleeve Shirt

This linen cotton blend is stylishly oversized. It can go from beach coverup to casual top to nighttime option.

AStylish Women’s Roll-Up Sleeve Button Up

This option is a linen-look shirt. It isn’t actually linen but is lightweight, doesn’t wrinkle, and comes in more than 30 colors.

Merino Wool Options

Woman with long brown hair poses with one hand in her jeans pocket, wearing a gray t-shirt.
A wool base layer can also be worn just as a cute, comfy tee. Photo credit: Amazon

Merino wool is lightweight, odor-resistant, and wrinkle-free. It may seem counterintuitive to choose wool on warmer vacations but it breathes and can be layered in colder climates. Options have become higher quality and more abundant over the years.

Manote 100% Merino Wool Maxi Dress with Spaghetti Straps

Let’s face it, sometimes we need to embrace our youth and throw back to the spaghetti strap dress. It goes with everything. This black merino wool option is the perfect chameleon of the travel capsule. Wear it solo or with an oversized blazer or shrug.

Adeptwool Women’s Merino Wool Swing Dress

This long sleeve dress pulls on easily, is soft, comes in neutral shades, and hits at the perfect right-above-knee length.

Merinnovation T-Shirt

This base layer t-shirt is cute enough to wear on its own. Not only is it super soft but merino wool is naturally moisture wicking making it ideal for more active days.

Skirts and Shorts

Woman poses in the desert holding a straw tote and wearing a cropped white tee and high-waisted khaki shorts. Only the lower half of her face and long brown hair are visible.
Look chic and stay cool in these shorts from Wihion Women. Photo credit: Amazon

For warmer vacations, shorter stretchy skirts and cute shorts are a packing-light must-have.

Rekucci Stretch Pencil Skirt

Pencil skirts are often looked at as officewear but with some stretch these short skirts are perfect pairings for tanks and button ups. This one is a travel staple in classic black.

Dani’s Choice High Waisted Flare Knee Length Skirt

With 12 color options and pockets (yay!) this skirt swirls and hangs just right. You can layer this with tights and boots in cooler weather or go bare legged with strappy sandals on warmer vacation spots.

Wihion Women’s Bahama Shorts

This structured, sophisticated pair of shorts is the perfect packing-light option. They can go casual or elegant.

Grace Karin Bowknot Tie Casual Shorts

An abundance of colors and the jaunty waist tie make these cute shorts the perfect pairing for fitted tops on your next trip.

Versatile Pieces for a Stylish Travel Wardrobe

Investing in versatile pieces ensures you maximize outfit options while minimizing luggage space. There are some excellent clothing items that can either be utilized in different configurations or even cute sets that can be mixed and matched.

Travel Sets to Mix and Match

Woman with long dark hair and sunglasses stands posing in front of a white wall, chair and low table, holding a cell phone with one hand in her pocket. She is wearing a short-sleeved chunky-knit top and matching pants with drawstring.
You can never go wrong with a matching set like this one from ANRABESS. Photo credit: Amazon

One way to maximize those fashion dollars is to pick a few sets. If you steer towards classic lines and fuss-free shapes, you’ll be able to use the pieces in a ton of different outfits.

Loungewear Tank & Pant Set

This set feels like sweatpants, but pick a darker color and you’d never know. The top on this set can be worn with the jersey wide leg pants or pair the bottoms with a merino t-shirt on a more active day.

Wide Leg Pant and Top Set

We love a matching set that’s simple and elegant. This top-and-bottom set can easily be casual or dressy depending on the color you choose and how you accessorize. The bottoms are flowy and comfortable. These are a great replacement for linen pants because they have the same vibe but won’t wrinkle into a crumpled suitcase casualty. Wear the top under a blazer with some jeans to mix it up.

Anrabess Crochet Sheer Knit Top with Wide Leg Bottoms

This outfit screams European villa. Just add a wide-brimmed sunhat (foldable of course) and cute leather slides. Pick a neutral and match the tank to the sheer top or pick a contrasting color for a bolder look.

Blazers

A women stands on a wooden stairway in the woods, wearing a white shirt and jeans with a long, light-colored jacket. Her hand is in one pocket.
A long jacket helps to finish off your outfit as well as keeping you warm. Photo credit: Amazon

A great blazer can elevate any outfit. Go oversized on more casual vacations or pick something a bit more tailored if you’ll be working.

Cicy Bell Women’s Tailored Blazer

This wardrobe champion deserves a very special shout-out! The polyester/viscose/spandex combo doesn’t wrinkle and it can take an outfit from casual to polished in an instant.

Long Dressy Cardigan Jacket

This long jacket can dress up anything from leggings to trousers to a maxi dress. It’s the perfect option for a comfy layer that elevates any outfit. Its open style means you don’t have to fuss with buttons or coordinating accessory color combinations.

Satin Trimmed Tuxedo Blazer

This slightly oversized blazer by Ann Taylor is an elegant option for pants or dresses. We love the glam look and fit!

Chic Jeans

Finding the perfect pair of jeans can be a monumental task. When you find that perfect pair for travel that has a little give and is comfortable to sit in for hours, snatch it up!

AE Dreamy Drape Stretch Jeans

I’ve been an American Eagle girlie since the 90s. They still have it. If you haven’t been in for a while, swing by. These jeans have the perfect amount of stretch. You can easily sit on a long flight without the waistband digging in and the lines are stunning with sandals, heels, or clogs.

White House Black Market High Rise Double Pret

These wide-legged khaki jeans fit like they are tailored. White House Black Market always has great jean options. They tend to run a little bit long even in their short length. Take these jeans from day to night with ease. I also love their wide-leg cargo pocket style.

J. Crew Slim Wide Button Fly Jeans

Look put together in this pair of fitted J. Crew jeans. The button fly elongates short torsos and the slim wide style is the perfect compromise between skinny jeans and wide-leg jeans.

Best Fabrics for Lightweight and Elegant Travel Clothing

We touched on fabrics above when discussing individual items, but an overall fabric manifesto will help you choose well when packing light. These are some of our favorites for versatility, comfort, wrinkle resistance, and ease of travel.

  • Micro Modal: Ultra-soft, lightweight, and wrinkle-resistant—perfect for trips to tropical or warmer climates.
  • Merino Wool: Naturally odor-resistant and moisture-wicking. Wear it alone in warmer weather or layer in cooler climates.
  • Stretchy Jersey Knit: Comfortable and polished. You can try to wrinkle it but it’s hard. We love it for trousers and dresses.
  • Linen: It’s fantastic because it’s breathable and helps keep you cool. While it comes in clutch for hot destinations, it is prone to wrinkles. Look for a linen/synthetic blend for less wrinkling.
  • Polyester/Nylon Blends: These heroes of the travel wardrobe are quick-drying, wrinkle-resistant, and durable. Perfect for your basics like tops and pants.

Packing light doesn’t mean you need to look like a slob or repeat outfits. Don’t sacrifice style—it’s all about smart choices. With versatile pieces like jumpsuits, well-made dresses, tailored trousers, and breathable fabrics like micro modal or merino wool, you’ll look chic while traveling minimally.

If your family vacations include (or even revolve around) bringing your pets, you’re not alone. Travel is a way of bonding with pets. The rising demand is leading to increased options from pet-friendly travel products to hotels that welcome our furry family members with pet beds, water bowls and treats.

Still, family vacation fun with Fido or Fluffy requires some planning. Before you hit the road, here’s what to buy and what to do to ensure the trip works for everyone.

Taking a Road Trip with a Pet: What to Pack

We like to keep a duffel bag filled with our dog’s toys and treats to keep him happy on the road. He’s even got his own car seat. Here are more ideas:

  • Travel makes some pets anxious. The NHV Natural Pets Travel Essentials Kit calming herbal remedy can help manage your pup or cat’s travel anxiety. It also includes a spray to ward off fleas, ticks, lice, and mosquitoes while camping or hiking. There’s also an ointment to help soothe injured paws and skin.

  • No more playing cat and mouse trying to get your cat into a pet carrier. The Cozy Comfort Carrier from Cat-in-the-Bag features a heads-out design, roomy interior, and an adjustable Velcro collar to ensure your cat feels calm and comfy. In addition, front Velcro ports and a zippered bottom make grooming an effortless task. The travel cat body carrier also features a long padded strap and a seat-belt pass-through loop for comfortable carrying and safer car rides.  The carrier comes in a variety of colors.

  • All fun road trips need good snacks, right? Melmo’s pet treats come in a variety of flavors. For dogs, Melmo offers beef stew, homestyle chicken, punky peanut butter, and other flavors. For felines, there’s Melmos Meowsers.

  • Keep your car seat clean and your dog safely harnessed with the Vailge Dog Seat Cover. . We use this all the time from errands to outings and trips. It’s 100% waterproof with a mesh window, and is machine washable.

  • Great for walks or longer hikes, this Onetigris Dog Vest Harness has pouches for treats, poop bags, or whatever your dog needs. My son even attached a Junior Ranger Joshua Tree National Park velcro badge to his dog’s vest on their camping trip. These sturdy vests are available for small, medium and large dogs.

While on the road, remember that safety comes first. Don’t leave home without an emergency kit for your family and a separate pet first aid kit. Have the first aid kits handy so you don’t have to unpack the whole car to reach them. It’s also a good idea to pack copies of health certificate and medical records.

Pros and Cons of Pet Travel

Things to consider before taking a road trip with a dog include:

  • Your pet’s temperament
  • Physical limitations
  • Illness.

Whether you are road tripping or flying with a pet, consult with your vet before the trip to ensure your pet is up to the trip. And book pet-friendly accommodations — don’t take the chance that you will find a hotel on the road. Take some time to find pet-friendly restaurants, too, so your pet doesn’t have to spend all of his time in the car or the hotel room.

Also, plan for more road trip stops to let your pet out of the car for exercise and potty breaks. Most rest stops along the interstates have areas specifically for pets.

Once you arrive at your destination, find activities to keep your dog active so he will spend more time sleeping when he’s alone in the hotel room..

Planning Your Pet-Friendly Trip: Hotels

There are thousands of dog-friendly hotels in the United States. Not so pet-friendly are the fees that come along with some of these stays. It is always best to check with individual properties but the following chains advertise no pet fee:

  • Aloft
  • Red Roof Inn
  • Kimpton
  • Motel 6
  • Virgin Hotels

Always check with the hotel before you book. Some hotels have restrictions on the size and breed of animals allowed to stay. And leave the “do not disturb” sign on the door — you don’t need to stress your pet or the housekeeping staff with a surprise encounter.

Finally, leave a phone number with the front desk so you can be reached if you plan to leave your pet in the room alone. That way, staff can call if your pet sounds distressed.

Pick the Right Destination

Take your dog’s health into consideration when choosing a destination.

For example, if your dog is old and has hip problems, you probably shouldn’t take him on a hiking trip unless you plan on carrying him in a backpack. If your dog is a barker, you may want to book rental home accommodations instead of a hotel stay. Or hire a dog walker/doggy daycare at your vacation destination if you will leave your pet unattended at any time.

Plan a Vet Visit

If you’ll be flying with your pet or your trip will be long, it is a great idea to squeeze in a visit with your veterinarian before you go. Your vet can assess your pet’s fitness to travel.

Planning to travel internationally? The American Veterinary Medical Association is a great resource for proof of vaccinations you might need (including USDA certification). Ask for a printed copy of your pet’s health record to carry with you in case an emergency comes up on the road.

Before you leave, have your pet micro-chipped for identification, and bring a spare tag with your phone number.

Doggy Dos and Don’ts for Riding in the Car

Designate a safe place for Fido in your car. That means your pets shouldn’t sit on your lap or jump between car seats.

It’s safest for dogs to be contained in a carrier, secured with a harness or seat belt, or lying down in the back seat. Try to make their area comfortable with a bed, blankets, and familiar toys. Some cars even have great pet-friendly features like washable, fold-down cargo areas or cargo barriers that keep your dog safe in the back of the car or SUV. This cover will ensure the back seat stays fur-free. We recommend bringing dog grooming gloves since travel stress can cause excess shedding and hair removal will be as easy as patting Fido.

Plan for More Pit Stops

Taking frequent pit stops on a road trip is important for everyone. Here, Welly (left) and Liesl enjoy some time out from the car drive. Photo Credit: Mackenzie Havey

Give yourself plenty of time to stop for breaks. Be sure you allow extra travel time on your road trip for bathroom breaks for your dog. It’s also a good way to prevent car sickness.

BringFido.com has listings of pet-friendly hotels, restaurants and activities along your route so your dog can stretch his legs after a long car ride.

Upon Arrival at Your Destination

Maya couldn’t wait to jump out of the car and explore our cabin and nearby surroundings in Big Bear Lake, CA. Photo Credit: Mimi Slawoff[/caption]

One of the first things we do upon arrival is take our dog for a long walk. Dogs are curious about their new surroundings. On her first trip to Big Bear, Maya explored every room in the cabin. But mostly she enjoyed sniffing pine cones, trees and other new smells outdoors. We brought her on hiking trails and to the lake.

Including dogs in our activities is a lot of fun. After all, that’s the main reason we travel with them, right?

When I was prepping for my first luxury cruise, I reached out to my high school bestie. She’s a “cruise only” traveler and her line of choice is ultra-luxe Regent Seven Seas. I was ready for an extensive list of must-haves and assumed I’d need multiple suitcases to carry a grand wardrobe.

Boy, was I wrong. She advised me to choose a few timeless classics in neutral colors that fit well and work together to create different outfits. Small, easy-to-pack accessories are the key to changing your looks, she advised. And bring a knockout dress or two and rewear them. She reminded me that no one’s tracking your outfits onboard.

After our conversation, I was relieved that I didn’t have to fret about fancy evening wear. I focused my shopping on finding pieces that would work for me onboard and when I returned home.

Let us inspire your travels! Sign up for our newsletter now.

A Sophisticated Suit is Your Cruise Dinner Power Move

When you want a comfortable, chic look for dinner, a two-piece pants set is an easy, elegant option. Elegance Miss offers a Paris-made collection that hits all the style points. Crafted of easy-care fabric, the sets come with wrap-style tunics, relaxed-fit blouses or button-front tops paired with flare pants that work with heels or flats.

An event-worthy jumpsuit is an alternative fit for this look. The right one for evening wear will be impeccably styled and constructed in a fabric that feels rich on your skin.

Dressed Up, Not Overdone: Chic Alternatives to the Cruise Formalwear Cliché

Have you considered packing an old bridesmaid dress for a cruise formal night? Don’t. Despite what you’ve been told, you really can’t wear it again. Donate it to your local thrift shop and find a sophisticated dress that makes you the center of attention.

The minimalist styles featured in Crescent’s special occasion collection are sophisticated and timeless. Solid color choices include go-with-everything neutrals or brilliant jewel tones. Easily change the look with jewelry and shoe swaps.

Or channel your inner “Emily in Paris” with a selection from the Elegance Miss Parisian Dress collection. Choose one of the head-turning prints. Or, for the most wardrobe flexibility, go with a neutral ivory, anything-but-basic black or glittery gold.

If you prefer a looser fit, look for goddess styles in luxurious silk. The one-size-fits-most dresses and caftans from Vanner House easily transition from day to evening with the addition of lots of gold jewelry and strappy sandals.

You Are What You Carry: The Prettiest Bags and Clutches for Cruise Nights

If you’re a jewelry person, you won’t have a problem accessorizing your evening cruise looks. I’m not, so I rely on a wardrobe of clutches, purses and bags to dress up and change my outfit.

It’s so easy to choose a night purse. You don’t have to fret about capacity, weather resistance or safety features. Night bags just wanna have fun.

If you only want to pack one bag, a simple black phone wallet clutch, like the jetty from shortyLOVE is your go-to. The zip-around style expands ever so gently to hold your essentials while keeping its slim profile.

I always pack at least one glam evening clutch. Metallic fabrics and twinkle beading are glam touches to look for. Online retailer Urban Expressions has a great selection of ever-changing, get it or it’s gone styles, including Art Deco-retro fans and clamshells.

If you’re a multipurpose handbag gal, a convertible woven tote from Sol and Selene goes from day to night in a flash by removing the strap. The gold accents provide a luxe touch and – bonus – a removable zip pouch holds all your makeup essentials.

When it comes to planning a family road trip with my son, having all of the right travel gear makes the difference between a delightful and disastrous road trip experience. We’ve road tripped regularly since he was a baby and I if I have learned anything, it’s that keeping the “are we there yets?” to a minimum requires packing all the essentials to make it a smooth ride for both of us.

Here’s my complete road trip packing list so you can have a smooth ride, too.

Keep the Kids Happy

If the kids aren’t happy, no one is happy on a road trip. These must-pack items will keep the kids comfortable and content.

  • Comfy clothes
  • Snacks
  • Entertainment
  • Hands-free baby carrier
  • Sippy cup
  • Sunglasses
  • Diaper changing pad
  • Diapers and Pull-Ups
  • Portable potty
  • Travel pillow and blanket

Comfy clothes. No one wants to be uncomfortable during a long drive — not you, not the kids. The soft clothes from Bam $ Stitch are made from soft bamboo and cute enough to make the kids Insta-stars.

Snacks. A hungry kid is a cranky kid. Stave off the hangries with healthy snacks like frozen grapes and carrot sticks. But toss in some treats too! The cookies and snacks from Michel et Augustin come in road-trip-friendly single-serving packets to keep the mess to a minimum. And don’t forget some treats for you, too! I’m dreaming of the dark chocolate sea salt cookie squares. If you want to give your trip an international flavor, check out the sweets and crisps from The Hamlet British Store.

Entertainment. It’s tempting to hand the kids an iPad loaded with enough movies to last the entire drive, but kids need more mental stimulation. That’s when the books and activity sets from Vickie’s Gifts come in handy. And don’t forget to pack a set of kid-friendly headphones to go with the iPad!

Hands-Free Baby Carrier. Since I am a single mom, it’s usually just my son and me on our road trips. So a hands-free baby carrier is important. It makes it easy for me to do what I need to do without worrying about him. Abiie also sells a line of baby dishware and silicone bibs that are easy to use, clean and reuse — important for travel when you don’t have time or access to do laundry.

Cup with a tight-fitting lid: For washing down the snacks, you’ll need something to drink. To keep the mess to a minimum, that drink should be in a closed container. That means sippy cups for the littles and travel mugs for the bigs.

Sunglasses/Sun visor: One of the things that would make my son fussy during a long car ride was when the sun was shining in his face. Having child-size sunglasses or a sun visor for his side of the car would always help. I recommend the iZoeL Car Sun Shade, which has bright letters and numbers for entertainment and learning.

Diaper changing pad: For easy and sanitary diaper changes in the car and at rest stops, a diaper changing pad is necessary. I kept a multi-functional diaper changing pad stocked up with fresh baby wipes, diapers and a change of clothes before my son and I hit the road.

Diapers and Pull-Ups: Bring twice as many as you think you’ll need. That’s why cars have trunks.

Portable potty: For potty-training toddlers or younger kids who are out of diapers but can’t quite wait until the next rest stop, a collapsible, portable potty like the Reusable Banana Travel Toilet Potty Training Seat can save the day.

Travel pillow and blanket: During long drives and mid-trip snoozes, a travel pillow and blanket will help keep the ride as comfortable as possible for the kiddos.

Must-Pack Road Trip Items

No matter when or where you go, you won’t want to leave home without these road trip necessities:

  • Wallet
  • Car registration/Car insurance
  • Passport and birth certificate
  • Travel insurance
  • Cell phone charging cables
  • Portable charger
  • Medication
  • Bottled water

Wallet: This may seem like a no-brainer, but don’t leave home without making sure your wallet is packed with all that it needs — driver’s license, credit cards and cash.

Car registration/Car insurance: Whether you’re driving your own car or road tripping in a rental car, you don’t want to drive off without your car registration and car insurance information in the glove compartment or center console.

Passport and birth certificate: If you’re planning on crossing the border at any point of your trip, be sure to pack passports for both you and your kids. I like to use a passport wallet such as the Valante Premium Family Travel Document Organizer to keep our documents organized and in one place.

Travel insurance: A good insurance plan is a must-have to keep you covered when traveling. World Nomads is my preferred travel insurance provider and is also great for road trips while abroad.

Cell phone charging cables: The last thing you want when you’re out on the open road is a dead cell phone! If your car is older and doesn’t have charging ports, buy a cell phone car charger like the AILKIN dual-port car charger.

Portable charger: For recharging your cell phone and other devices on the go, I highly recommend packing a portable charger. The Anker Powercore is the one I never leave home without.

Medication: When traveling with my allergy-prone son, one of the first things I made sure to pack was his Epi-Pen. It’s also important to have over-the-counter medications packed and handy such as Benadryl, Tylenol and Imodium.

Bottled water: Having bottled water on hand is a must-have in the car during a road trip for quenching thirst as well as for cleaning. Opt for a reusable water bottle or large water jug to cut back on plastic waste as well as space.

First aid kit: A must-have on every packing list for a road trip is a well-stocked first-aid kit. Be prepared for emergencies with a portable kit such as the DAVEMED 2-in-1 Travel First Aid Kit.

Paper map, a must have on the packing list for a road trip with kids

Road Trip Emergency Kit

While these road trip essentials likely won’t make or break your trip, they are all good to have in an emergency. Even if there isn’t a true emergency, they’ll definitely make your road trip go much smoother as you make your way to your destination:

  • Paper map/Printed directions
  • Bathroom kit
  • Roadside emergency kit
  • Spare tire
  • Phone mount
  • Flashlight
  • Trash bags
  • Multitool pocket knife
  • Car manual

Paper map/Printed directions: Maps can be downloaded from Google Maps ahead of time for use when you’re offline or have limited cell service.

Bathroom kit: For the times someone has “gotta go” but a rest stop or gas station isn’t within reach, pack a roll of toilet paper, wet wipes, hand sanitizer and waste bag.

Roadside emergency kit: This should include jumper cables, tire repair kit, tire pressure gauge and other essential car items to help you get to your next destination safely, or at least until roadside assistance arrives.

Spare tire: While most cars already come equipped with a “donut” to temporarily use in case of a flat tire, having a full-size spare tire available is the safest way to get you back on the road during long road trips. Pack a can of Emergency Fix-a-Flat and a reflective triangle, too. And make sure you have the equipment you’ll need to change the tire should the need arise. That includes a working jack with all the parts and a wheel lug if your tires require one.

Multitool pocket knife: Choose the brand that works for you but definitely keep one in the glove box. I like the Leatherman Tool. It has 15 tools that come in handy in all sorts of emergencies, from a sharp knife for cutting a seat belt after an accident to a set of pliers for opening a hard-to-open drink for a thirsty kid, which is its own kind of emergency on a long road trip!

Car manual: Yes, you can Google it, if you happen to be in an area with cell service. But if you’re not — and don’t these things always happen when you’re not? — you’ll be grateful to be able to page through the manual looking up “what does that dash light mean?”

Phone mount: There’s nothing more dangerous than having to reach for and look down at your phone for directions or to answer urgent calls while driving. That said, I highly recommend having a phone mount such as the Humixx Car Phone Holder Mount to help keep your hands on the wheel and not your phone.

Flashlight: Stay out of the dark by keeping a portable flashlight or headlamp handy in the car.

Trash bags: Whether for trash or for the traveler who may get a little road sick, make sure to pack a few trash bags in the car for collecting waste.

Road Trip Essentials for Entertainment

When on the road, these essentials will keep everyone entertained and happy for hours:

  • Family-friendly music playlist
  • Road trip games
  • Audiobooks

Family-friendly music playlist: A road trip isn’t a road trip without some good tunes to listen to on the way! Load up your device with good family-friendly tunes from Amazon Music or Spotify prior to the trip so that you won’t have to rely on the radio or your wifi for music.

Road trip games: I’ll never forget the days when my family would hit the road for our annual beach trip. With hours to burn before reaching our destination, we’d pass the time with fun road trip games such as “I Spy” or “What Am I Counting?” Now I enjoy keeping my son entertained and off the electronics during our road trips with the same games.

Audiobooks: In addition to games and music, loading up devices with a good family-friendly audiobook or podcast is a great way to pass the time and keep everyone entertained.

Road Trip Essentials: Clothing

In addition to your luggage, it’s helpful to have these extras in the car for the journey:

  • Change of clothes
  • Rain jacket
  • Light jacket/Sweatshirt
  • Comfortable shoes

Change of clothes: Messes and accidents can happen during trips. That said, it’s always good to have an extra change of clothes and underwear handy in a carry-on bag.

Rain jacket: A lightweight rain jacket is good to have on stand by for rainy road trips.

Light jacket/Sweatshirt: For cooler temps inside and outside of the car, having a light jacket or sweatshirt is helpful

Comfortable shoes: Lightweight, comfortable shoes that are easy to slip on and off are a must for staying comfortable during long road trips.

Ice scraper and shovel, a must have on the packing list for a road trip with kids
If there’s a chance of snow in the forecast, you’ll want to be prepared with an ice scraper and shovel to keep your car clean and safe for driving. Photo credit: Kimberly Miles

Winter Road Trip Essentials

  • Ice scraper with a brush
  • Microfiber towel.
  • Can of de-icer
  • Tire chains or cables
  • Small shovel
  • Hand warmers and blanket

Ice scraper and shovel: For winter road trips, you won’t want to leave home without making sure that an ice scraper and snow brush are in the car. I like to keep them in my trunk year-round so that I’m never caught off guard by snow or ice. Add an extra so the kids can help clean the car after a snowstorm! Also pack a pair of waterproof gloves to keep your hands warm and dry while you’re removing the snow and ice.

Microfiber towel: These quick-drying towels are perfect for wiping down side mirrors and foggy inside windows.

Can of de-icer: It melts ice, snow, and frost on contact, which sure beats standing in the freezing cold trying to scrape an inch of ice off the windshield!

Tire chains or cables: You’ll be happy to have them if you will be road tripping through the mountains. A freak snowstorm can be a scary thing, especially if you’re driving a smaller, lighter-weight car. Be sure to pack some cash to pay a roadside installer.

Small shovel: You’ll need this to dig out in the event of a big snowstorm. This small foldable shovel can live in your trunk. Toss in a bag of cat litter or sand too. They help give your tires traction to drive out of the snow.

Hand warmers and a blanket: You’ll want those if you get stuck on the side of the road waiting for help.

Road Trip Essentials: Miscellaneous

Last but not least, you won’t want to leave these items off of your packing list for a road trip:

  • AAA membership
  • Toiletries
  • Travel mug
  • Manual Breast Pump
  • Umbrella
  • Towel
  • Bug spray/Insect repellent
  • Sunscreen
  • Batteries

AAA Membership: While not completely necessary, an AAA membership definitely comes in handy when you need roadside assistance. Not to mention, AAA membership comes with great perks including hotel discounts!

Toiletries: Don’t forget hygiene essentials such as your toothbrush, toothpaste and shower products! A good toiletry bag helps keep everything organized so nothing is forgotten at home.

Travel mug: Keep a travel mug handy for having your favorite hot or cold drinks while on the go.

Manual Breast pump: If you’re breastfeeding your baby, don’t forget to bring along a manual breast pump and breastmilk bags for when you need to pump on the go. I can tell you from personal experience that it’s much better than lugging around a big electric pump!

Umbrella: Rainy days happen, and can happen at any time during your road trip. I keep one in my car all the time, just in case!

Towel: Have a towel handy for drying up messes in the car or drying off when that unexpected rainstorm hits.

Bug spray/Insect repellent: Keep bugs out of the car and off of your skin by packing the bug spray.

Sunscreen: Keep sunscreen handy to protect your skin from the blazing sun while on the road.

Batteries: Having extra batteries on hand is never a bad idea for road trips. You may need them for your flashlight or for the kid’s toys!

Visiting Europe’s capital cities is a bucket list must for travel lovers. It’s an awesome feeling to stand in the shadow of Big Ben, the Eiffel Tower or the Colosseum for the first time. But prepping for a trip can be a little panicky. You want to dress to fit in and avoid wearing outfits that scream, “I’m an American.”

It’s easier now that the entire world dresses more casually. On my first trip overseas, wearing sneakers was a huge no-no. I limped around Paris in heels, cursing implied fashion rules. But after logging many European trips, I believe no one knows I’m from the US until I order a coffee in my giveaway New Yawk accent.

Packing key essentials will make your outfit styling easier and help you capture the local vibe. Here are tips on what to bring, and what to leave at home when visiting Europe’s major cities.

Ready to explore the world? We can help.

When in Rome… Don’t Wear a Graphic Tee

Boho styled tops from Umgee, available through June Adel store

A busy Saturday at home might start at the farmer’s market, include brunch with your besties and end at an outdoor concert in the park. Your favorite concert or college tee is your go-to when you’re out all day.

Your European days will be wonderfully long as you pack in all the sights. Comfort’s key, but there are better options than the butter-soft tee you still sleep in sometimes.

A cute Umgee top from June Adel works great with jeans and will pop in pics. The boho styling is a flattering fit for most and neutral color options are a terrific way to extend your wardrobe.

A dressier option would be a colorful silk tunic from Vanner House. It’s an easy-to-wear look over jeans. The only accessory you’ll need is a pair of statement sunglasses.

SheBuysTravel Tip: If you’re traveling to Europe in summer, don’t count on air conditioning like the ice box temps we have in the States. Loose-fitting tops can help keep you cool.

Ditch the Sweats! Cuter Options for Strolling

Plan on logging thousands of daily steps when visiting European cities. Although it’s tempting to grab your favorite pair of torn jeans or cozy sweatpants, there are comfy options that look smarter.

When traveling to warm, sunny spots like Madrid or Athens, choose lightweight, loose-fitting pants to beat the heat. These linen beach pants from Cali 1850 come in 15 different patterns to complement your wardrobe palette.

You’ll need at least one pair of jeans in your favorite cut. Vickie’s Gifts has a wide selection of boutique styles, including classic flares and crops with embroidered hems.

By swapping tops and accessories, you can instantly change your look. Choose a simple straight leg for the most flexibility like this one from the Crescent’s chic pants collection.

SheBuysTravel Tip: Charming cobblestone streets look pretty in pics. But they beat your feet. Spend time choosing, and breaking in, your shoes before your trip.

Head-Turning Dresses for Navigating Hills and History

Your secret wardrobe weapon is a dress that makes you feel special and comfortable. You’ll project that confidence when posing for pics. When considering your options, think about the vibe of your destination. A tailored shirtdress is a great choice for afternoon tea in London. Sipping port in Lisbon at golden hours? Consider a flowy maxi with strappy sandals.

For the Everyday

The unique dresses collection at Vickie’s Gifts offers several very wearable styles, including this flattering A-line shirt dress, available in black and oatmeal.

This swingy denim mini is a great transitional piece, bridging the seasons from spring to summer and summer to fall.

For Additional Dazzle

If your vacay itinerary includes a “wow” moment, like dinner at one of the top restaurants in Paris, you’ll need a knock-out dress, like this one from the Elegance Miss Parisian dress collection.

Prefer an option you can dress up or down depending on your destination? You can’t go wrong with the perfect little black dress.

SheBuysTravel Tip: Your sightseeing itinerary will likely include one or more churches, mosques or temples. Be a responsible tourist and respect the local worshippers during your visit. Pack a top or dress that’s conservatively styled – with sleeves, without a deep plunge – to wear. A scarf worn as a shawl or head covering works too.

Chic Hoodie Alternatives

Push aside the temptation to pack your favorite sweatshirt or windbreaker. Your outfit topper should be as pretty as the rest of your look. And it needs to be versatile. You might need it on the plane when it gets chilly—or strolling through the twinkling Amsterdam canals after dark.

For day, denim is always a great choice. Elevate your jean jacket look with a designer jean jacket from Vanner House. They’re constructed of lightweight stretch denim in two wash options. And they feature your choice of printed design on the back and collar. Traveling to Italy? The Capri works perfectly for sipping limoncello.

If you’re traveling to Europe during shoulder season, you’ll need a warmer jacket. A trendy trench looks great, especially in luxe suede.

Beach? Pool? Find Your Luxe Waterfront Look

A bathing suit and coverup are must-pack essentials, whether you’re planning to hit the ocean, a rooftop pool or a sunny boat deck. A one-piece swimsuit is a timeless choice, whether you opt for basic black or a bold color. The Lenae from WET has flirty ruffles on the leg hem and wide shoulder straps to keep the girls looking great.

And try a twist on a linen button-down for your coverup. WET’s oversized white tunic takes you easily from poolside chaise to cafe. Its classic style is a real wardrobe extender.

Don’t Love a Chest Crossbody?

I haven’t fallen in love with the chest crossbody. I understand the convenience of having all your stuff at hand and out of reach of strangers. I’ve tried several styles and they’re not flattering on me.

I prefer a classic crossbody that’s large enough for my phone and a few essentials but fits slim at my hip. The made-in-the-US Postal Crossbody from Vanner House comes in 4 leather color choices and features an envelope flap secured by a brass clasp.

I rarely obsess about what to pack for a trip. That is partly because I travel frequently enough that I don’t often fully unpack – I just refill the toiletries and leave them, along with my power adapter, rain coat, travel mirror and a few other things, in my favorite suitcase.

But the prospect of packing for a bucket list safari in Africa left me entirely verklempt. Here’s what I packed, what I wish I hadn’t, what I wish I had and a few tips for doing the whole thing better the next time.

What I Packed and Why

Normally, I am Team Carry-on. But I simply could not fit everything I thought I would need in one carry-on and small personal item. So the first thing you need is a larger suitcase like this one from Ricardo.

Clothes for an African Safari

The note from our trip organizer offered this packing advice:

“Don’t wear red. It makes the lions mad. And don’t wear blue. It attracts the Tsetse flies.”

That posed a particular challenge for my brightly colored wardrobe. I needed some beige in my life. And I wanted quick-dry clothes that could be washed in the sink and hung up to dry overnight. Shirts with built-in sun protection offered bonus points.

Here are my favorite options:

Seamaid Women’s Quick Dry Pants

keriffe Women’s Cargo Pants

Pioneer Camp Women’s UV Sun Protection Shirt

MAGCOMSEN Women’s Short Sleeve Sun Protection Shirts

Sun protection, from sunscreen to sunglasses to sun hats, is critical if you’re visiting equatorial Kenya, even at its southern border with Tanzania. Photo credit: Cindy Richards

Other Things to Bring Along

A great sunhat is a must to give you some respite from the equatorial sun. And get one that ties below your chin. It might not be sexy, but it’s certainly practical when the winds blow across the savanna. If you get too hot wearing a hat, bring a sun visor.

Sturdy hiking shoes or boots aren’t critical unless you happen to be visiting when it rains, as I did. The mud, standing water and slippery stones made me happy to have my sturdy shoes. Others did just fine with their tennis shoes.

A puffy jacket that squishes down to pack easily is important for the early morning and late afternoon game drives when the air can be chilly.

I also picked up a safari vest. All of those pockets came in handy when I needed quick, easy access to my binoculars, sunscreen, bug spray or lip balm.

Do I Need Fancy Clothes?

Clearly, this is personal preference. Some of our fellow safari goers would return from the 4pm game drive and head back to their rooms to shower and dress for dinner. My group chose to wash our hands and head to the bar for a pre-dinner drink.

That meant the two skirts, tops and shoes I packed for evening wear were a waste of precious space in my suitcase.

Must-Have Safari Extras

Day pack. I used my personal carryon bag, but others opted for backpacks. Whatever works before for you to carry the things you’ll need during game drives.

Binoculars. The animals aren’t always courteous enough to hang out close to the road. Having a pair of binoculars meant we were able to see the elusive cheetahs and leopards in Kenya. I took these binoculars, which are compact and lightweight. If you want to be able to photograph what you see in the binoculars, try these, but note that they weigh more than two pounds.

Sunscreen. Bring the highest SPF you can and carry the bottle with you whenever you’re out and about so you can reapply regularly. I even did this on days we spent driving from one location to the next. The Toyota Land Cruisers we used on our Capture Kenya safari did not have air conditioning, so we drove with the windows open to let the air – and sun – stream in. This Neutrogena 70 SPF sunscreen comes in a TSA-friendly three ounces.

Bug spray. While it’s tempting to stick with natural products, this is the time for DEET. Bugs in Africa are serious business and carry serious disease. Don’t risk it. I bought this six-pack of TSA-friendly one-ounce Repel bug spray with DEET.

Hand wipes. We kept a pack in the Land Cruiser. It was nice after a particularly dusty drive to pull out the wipes and clean our hands and faces.

Face mask. See above, re: dusty drives. I kept my Covid mask close by so I could reach it easily any time a dust cloud blew up or we passed a particularly smelly truck belching black exhaust fumes.

Water bottle with a built-in Life Straw. My safari tour company gave each of us insulated refillable water bottles and our tour guides regularly filled them with bottled water they kept chilled in the coolers. If you won’t have that, buy one of these. You don’t want to risk getting sick on this bucket list trip!

Tide soap single packets. I used these TSA-friendly packets to wash out underwear, socks, pants and tops in the hotel room sinks. They easily dried overnight in the hot dry air.

Anti-Diarrheal. Fortunately, I didn’t need these, but others in our group did. Bring them with you – you won’t likely be close to a supermarket or drug store.

Malaria pills. These are a must. You’ll get them from your doctor and should start taking them before your trip, every day at breakfast through the safari and for several days after you get home.

Power adapter. Mine died on my last trip, so I bought this one. It worked fine. And I brought it with me every day to keep my phone charged up in the safari vehicle. Ask your safari tour company if the vehicles are equipped with power. If not, bring a portable power pack. It always surprises me how quickly my phone drains battery power when I’m taking so many photos and videos!

Love your skincare routine but hate leaving it behind on trips? Don’t sacrifice glowing skin while traveling! This guide offers practical tips and tricks, highlighting travel-friendly heroes like EYURS for dehydrated skin (including Beauty of Joseon Glow Serum), Tabor + Olive’s detangling spray and Mint Shampoo Bar, and the Lea Black Beauty® Beauty Bundle Trio.

Whether you have normal, dry, oily, or sensitive skin or hair, travel can stress it. You might keep later hours, drink a little more, be exposed to new pollutants, spend more time outdoors or in humid conditions, and bathe with a different type of water.

The easiest way to look your best for your Instagram posts or TikToks is to keep reasonably close to your home beauty routine.

For Your Face

Daily Moisturizer

Round Lab Moisturizing Sunscreen can double as a day cream

With Round Lab’s Birch Juice Moisturizing Sunscreen, you might be able to leave your day cream at home and use this as your moisturizer. It has SPF 50 and is hydrating enough that it serves as both moisturizer AND sunscreen. Plus it comes in a handy TSA and tote bag friendly tube.

I know it may seem excessive, but I travel with two kinds of face moisturizer. My Kiehl’s daily face moisturizer has SPF 30. I still add sunscreen, but I start every day with an extra dose of SPF just to be safe.

And then I have a night cream because even if I’m camping (just to be clear: I’m NOT) I don’t need sunscreen while I sleep. Starlight regenerative cream by N8iV uses organic acorn oil, grape seed, aloe vera and jojoba so you can repair your skin while you sleep. In a bed.

Hydrating Mask

If you regularly get facials, or do at home treatments, don’t skip this on vacation. On trips of a week or more, I always pack a sheet mask. This is an easy way to boost hydration and treat skin that could be suffering from excess partying, less sleep, or exposure to different allergens or pollutants. I like Karuna face masks, which are easily to use, biodegradable, and reasonably priced.

SheBuysTravel Tip: bring an extra mask for your traveling companion – spouse, friend, daughter. Everyone deserves a little pampering!

Hydrating Serum

Make room for Beauty of Joseon Glow Serum
Make room for Beauty of Joseon Glow Serum

Serum seems like something you can maybe skip if you are limiting your beauty bag, but I urge you to reconsider! First of all, most serums come in teeny tiny bottles that are no bigger than a tampon. Second, they pack a punch. Just a couple of drops can transform your skin and because the air on planes can be very dehydrating, I always pop my serum into my carryon. And since menopause I have no reason to pack an emergency tampon or 12, so I have plenty of space for this elixir. Beauty of Joseon Glow Serum helps with enlarged pores and skin redness. Glow Deep Serum evens your skin tone and both serums add extra hydration.

CBD Skin Care

CBD skin care is often quite pricey, but Lea Black Beauty’s face skincare kit, the Beauty Bundle Trio, includes face wash, anti-aging serum with hemp CBD, and a CBD face moisturizer. The collagen and antioxidants work particularly well for mature skin.

Korean Skincare

I recently had two flights where I changed planes in South Korea. I was hoping to spend some time shopping for K-beauty products at the source, but there was no time. Luckily, EYURS, an online marketplace offering authentic Korean skincare products, has a section of products for dehydrated skin that are a must-have for long-haul flights.

Unlike most Korean skincare companies, EYURS is US-based. It was started in 2022 in Los Angeles. Because the products ship from the US, they arrive faster, which is great for last-minute travel planning.

Even better,  EYURS offers plenty of gentle formulas at affordable prices, with many items under $10. My recommendation is to buy a sampling of products to test before you go away.

For Your Hair

Leave in hair conditioner from Tabor + Olive
Leave in hair conditioner from Tabor + Olive

Wind is the enemy of many hair types. My wavy hair suffers during long rides in a convertible or a boat speeding across a lake. I know, First World Problems.

Tabor + Olive’s organic (and vegan!) leave-in conditioning spray keeps fine, thin hair and thick curly hair, plus everything in between, soft and knot free. With no silicone and ingredients you find in your herbal tea, like chamomile, rosemary and ginseng, you can feel good about what you are putting on your hair.

Note that the silicone-free Tabor + Olive spray doesn’t come in a package under 4 ounces, so you can’t carry it on a plane, but you can pack in your checked bag.

Shampoo Bar

Great for travel- Tabor + Olive’s shampoo bar
Great for travel- Tabor + Olive’s shampoo bar

What you CAN bring onto the plane, or on any travel adventures save a SpaceX flight, is a shampoo bar. These eco-conscious choices don’t use plastic, but they wouldn’t be suitable for spaceship travel since they require water. But for home or pretty much every other kind of travel, these bars are great.

I have ‘soft launched’ a bar from Naples Soap Company. I’m not ready to fully commit since I also have a (plastic) jug of my long preferred shampoo. But so far I have been pleased with the result from the Moroccan Oil bar, with its hypoallergenic fragrance and natural ingredients like cocoa butter and coconut oil. These are also vegan, paraben-free and phthalate-free, as are Tabor + Olive’s mint shampoo bars. Tabor + Olive’s non-toxic shampoo bars use cocoa and shea butters, jojoba, and peppermint and tea tree essential oils, ideal for those with normal to oily hair.

For Your Hands

I am addicted to Kiehl’s Ultimate Strength Hand Salve. This rich cream saves my hands from drying out when I am using more sanitizer on the go. And in a pinch, I slather it on my feet after a day of hiking or walking around a city.

Final Thoughts

Keep it Clean

Image8These Makeup Eraser cloths have been around the block (and the world) a few times but they are still soft. Photo credit: Judy Antell
These Makeup Eraser cloths have been around the block (and the world) a few times but they are still soft. Photo credit: Judy Antell

One of the most important things I always have in my carry on bag is a makeup remover wipe. At home I prefer a makeup remover and reusable washcloth. But if you’re on a long flight, or train or car ride, you might have makeup on for hours longer than usual. Which means if you don’t remove it, you could be starting out on your vacation with a pimple or rash.

Although I normally avoid single-use, individually wrapped makeup wipes,  Fig.1 micellar water wipes disintegrate in water and come in compostable wrappers.

For the rest of the trip, I have a couple of MakeUp Eraser cloths, which I also use at home. They clean with just water, so no need to pack makeup remover or cleanser. And you can use each cloth a couple of times, then wash them out and use them the next day.

Pack It Right

Stax refillable containers are leakproof, and snap together so you can keep your bag organized.
Stax refillable containers are leakproof, and snap together so you can keep your bag organized.

I always have the same conditioner and hair products with me, and instead of relying on samples, I invested in a stash of Humangear’s Stax. Stax refillable containers are leakproof (except for makeup remover, which you shouldn’t need anyway) and much more economical than buying small sizes. I’m all about the giant containers of my favorite body lotion, sunscreen, conditioner and curl cream at home, then transferring them to TSA-approved containers under 3.4 ounces.

One More Tip

I always have my cosmetics ready to go. The key is to refill anything you are low on when you unpack. I top off my containers when I get home, and check everything so I’m ready to hit the road at a moment’s notice (this also means saving the last ¼ of a tube of toothpaste at home to throw in so my teeth are taken care off, and checking that my floss isn’t on its last few inches).

Happy travels!
