LaceUp Athletic’s weighted compression sleeves are my newest must pack item. I’ve always relied on compression products for flights and road trips, convinced that they help reduce jet lag and boost my energy when I arrive.

That’s likely because compression sleeves gently squeeze your arm so blood flows back to your heart more easily, reducing swelling and keeping your circulation healthy. But LaceUp Sleeves take it further: their gentle, balanced weights provide subtle toning, and thanks to a partnership with LYCRA®, the silky-soft fabric is comfortable enough to wear all day. Unlike my old compression gear that felt tight and uncomfortable by day’s end, LaceUp Sleeves have just the right amount of stretch—and I like the colors that are offered.

What Makes LaceUps Different?

LaceUp Sleeves combine the best of both worlds: gentle compression and calming weight. They’re the first wearable compression sleeves designed to be worn on the move, offering sensory support that feels like a subtle grounding tool.

  • Weighted Evenly: The weights are light and spaced evenly around the sleeve.
  • Compression that Supports, Not Squeezes: The sleeves provide gentle compression to improve circulation and reduce muscle fatigue.
  • Made with LYCRA® for Soft Stretch and Comfort: The partnership with LYCRA® means the material is silky-soft, breathable, and stretchy. No digging, pinching, or sliding down.
  • Travel-Ready Design: Slim enough to wear under clothes or with your everyday airport outfit. They don’t scream “medical wear”—they look sleek and intentional.

The Science-Backed Benefits of Compression Sleeves

Even without the weight, compression sleeves have some serious travel perks:

  • Improved blood flow during long periods of sitting (bye-bye, swollen ankles).  The compression helps keep blood flowing by forcing blood to return to the heart.
  • Reduced muscle fatigue and faster recovery—great if you’re walking 10,000+ steps a day sightseeing.
  • Enhanced proprioception, aka body awareness, which helps with coordination and stability.

Dr. Mikjail Serruya, MD, PhD, Assistant Professor, Department of Neurology at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, PA, says, “”Compression therapy has well-established medical benefits for blood flow and tissue oxygenation that may help address concerns related to prolonged sitting during travel, though effectiveness depends on proper fit, appropriate compression levels, and individual health factors, so anyone considering compression garments should seek guidance from a healthcare professional familiar with their medical history.”

LaceUp Sleeves go a step further. By adding subtle, evenly distributed weight, they provide deep pressure stimulation—a sensory input that’s been shown to reduce anxiety, regulate the nervous system, and create a sense of calm.

Who Benefits from Weighted Compression Sleeves?

  • Everyday travelers – That’s most of us! Perfect for long flights or road trips where you’re sitting still for too long.
  • MS, Parkinson’s and tremors – The weight and compression may help reduce involuntary movements and support muscle control.
  • Anxiety – Especially in overstimulating environments like airports, hotels, or conferences.
  • ADHD and sensory sensitivity – They offer non-pharmaceutical calming input without drawing attention. The pressure applied by the sleeves can activate the parasympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for a calming response
  • Workout recovery:  An NIH 2025 study concluded that compression products “significantly mitigated muscle strength decline following exercise-induced muscle fatigue”

When I Use Them

  • At the airport: Compression products are part of my standard airport outfit now.
  • On the plane: I wear compression products during long flights—they are comfortable and help reduce swelling.
  • Walks: The weighted sleeves add a little boost to my fitness walks and give me the circulation benefits of compression.  Wearing the sleeves on a full day of sightseeing provides relief for tired calves and ankles.
  • In the car: Whenever I have a car ride that exceeds one hour, I slip on the LaceUp Sleeves.  Why not?  I want improved energy upon arrival.

Over the past two years, I’ve taken dozens of trips, from Dubai to Barbados and Orlando. When I began traveling, I would rummage through my bag in a panic, looking for my ID like a total newbie.

What I’ve learned is that the right travel bag, packed correctly, can make or break a trip, whether you’re exploring a new city or settling in for a long-haul flight. With hundreds of bags to choose from, it’s essential to find one with the features you need at the right price.

This post is sponsored by Babbel.

Is Babbel worth it? Yes! I have used Babbel for years and I believe it is definitely worth the cost.

The benefits are substantial. Lessons are easy to follow and learn, and the review reinforces what I learned in previous lessons. It is easy to use on your browser or via the Babbel app on your phone. Plus, Babbel offers a mix of online lessons and courses live-streamed on the Babbel website and the app.

The livestream lessons are a great option to enhance your language study. These lessons are appealing for the following reasons:

  • Classes are offered on many dates and times to fit your schedule
  • There are a number of different teachers with a wide range of teaching styles
  • The small class size (limited to six students) means you’ll receive personal attention

But, the livestream classes in your target language aren’t identified by skill level. Read on to learn more about my experience and why I think it’s something Babbel could improve.

Babbel makes it easy to learn a new language. I live in Arizona, where speaking Spanish is a definite plus. (I’m not alone — the company says Babbel for Spanish is the most popular language across its platform.)

For me, learning a second language has both career and personal benefits. Many employers pay a premium for workers fluent in two or more languages.

And, as we travelers know, international travel is always a little easier if you speak the local language.

Our Favorite Babbel Features

  • The online application breaks down language learning into easily digestible lessons that take 15 to 20 minutes each.
  • Language learners move through the courses at their own pace. So you can choose to complete a lesson on a quick break or set aside an hour and run through several in a row.
  • Learning languages through video, audio, games, podcasts and images, Babbel reinforces the short lessons with quick quizzes, reviews and supporting materials. I’ve found that it’s possible to pick up essential phrases and words very quickly.
  • There is even a new version of the old-fashioned flashcards that make use of a memory trick called spaced repetition — the cards flash at intervals that are spaced out in a way designed to transfer vocabulary into your long-term memory.
  • Babbel teaches you real-life phrases that you can start using immediately.
  • Every learner is different and Babbel understands that, which is why you’ll have a personalized learning path whether you are a beginner, intermediate or advanced learner.

What Languages Does Babbel Teach?

Babbel offers language study in the following languages:

  • Spanish
  • French
  • German
  • Italian
  • Portuguese (Brazilian)
  • Polish
  • Russian
  • Dutch
  • Turkish
  • Danish
  • Norwegian
  • Swedish
  • Indonesian
  • English

Even better, Babbel tailors the learning experience for your native language. The company says it does that because your native language influences how you learn a foreign language. For example, English speakers learn Spanish in a different way than French speakers do.

Is Babbel worth it? Check out this pricing screenshot to help decide.

How Babbel Works

Let’s start this Babbel review at the beginning: Signing up for a language course is more than just filling in the blanks. Babbel walks you through a series of questions to help you find the right program to meet your personal needs.

The quick and easy quiz asks about your current knowledge and reasons for taking the course, and it helps to define personal expectations. Babbel claims that 75 percent of its students achieve their goals. The system encourages at least 15 minutes daily to get through the 30-plus lessons towards a goal.

Your learning style and age also help refine the learning program Babbel will offer you.

Once all of that is done, you create an account and step up for a placement quiz.

Finding the Correct Babbel Level

The screenshot below shows the Babbel self-assessment tool. Here, we learn that I am progressing but I am not quite skilled enough yet to order a meal at a restaurant.

This screenshot of the self-assessment can help determine, is Babbel worth it?

Babbel asks for your confidence level with the language you want to learn. A quick series of questions determines which level of lessons — there are beginner levels, intermediate levels and advanced levels — will be the starting point for your Babbel course. Then the app lets you take the first lesson for free before you have to provide your payment information.

There are multiple Babbel subscription plans requiring commitments from a one-month subscription to a lifetime subscription. Buying multiple months saves you on the per-month price. For example, the Babbel cost in May 2023 was $14.95 for a one-month subscription. A six-month subscription is $11.15 per month, a 25% savings.

Note that while prices are listed in monthly costs, the subscription costs are paid in full when you sign up. The company also offers a 20-day money-back guarantee. Just write to customer service within that 20-day window to get a full refund.

Babbel Lessons on the Language Learning App

Say it correctly, and positive reinforcement comes your way. Say it wrong and the lesson repeats and provides a second opportunity to say it correctly, like in this screenshot. Is Babbel worth it?

As you can see in the screenshot above, Babbel keeps it simple. In each lesson, you’ll see a clear image displayed with minimal wording, forming either a short phrase or naming the objects depicted.

Teaching the French word “clothes,” for example, shows clothing lying about and the terms “les vêtements.” Clicking on the image plays a native speaker saying the words in French, and clicking on the microphone lets you repeat the words. Say it wrong, and you’ll be given the audio example and asked to repeat it until your pronunciation is correct.

This rhythm runs throughout the learning modules, making it easy to pick up phrases and use the language in the real world. After all, that’s the purpose of taking the course.

Babbel Live Classroom Lessons

Live classes, a subscription add-on, are available at all hours of the day and night and can be easily booked through the app, as the screenshot below shows.

Once you decide, is Babbel worth it, you can book your next class.

My package came with the ability to check out two livestream classes for free. It’s a huge advantage to the program. Babbel offers a long list of classes throughout the day. The French “Order in a Restaurant” class runs 25 times a week, from 6 in the morning until 11 at night.

As I mentioned earlier, it is these live lessons that I wish Babbel would rate by skill level. I signed up for a live class because I thought it would be a good learning tool to get to my beginning Spanish basics quickly. I joined the class a few minutes early and, in chatting with the instructor, I learned that this class was for advanced students or intermediate Spanish speakers with good vocabulary.

At the time, my Spanish vocabulary was limited to cerveza, tostadas, buenos dias, tacos and burritos. I wasted my credit. When learning my capabilities, the instructor said that various instructors have been asking Babbel to assign skill levels to the live lessons.

I contacted support and was told they would reinstate the credit.

Other Features of Babbel

The mobile app lets you take on (without extra charge) games, quizzes and reviews beyond what you learn in the lesson. Favorite (or challenging) phrases can be saved so you can return later to practice your listening skills and pronunciation, running through the words and phrases.

Exploring these options lets you change your course level if the lessons are too easy or more challenging than you had expected. You can also fine-tune courses to meet your specific needs.

You’d want to be in the “travel” course mode when traveling to a country. If you plan on attending an international conference, you might want the “conversational” course mode.

Bottom Line: Is Babbel Worth it?

Yes! I have progressed greatly in my language fluency and I like that the lessons can be pegged to your personal learning style, your language ability and even the reason you’re trying to learn the language.

Learning a new language takes time and consistency. For busy adults, finding the time to learn a new language requires flexibility and commitment to practice. Days are packed, so finding a learning platform that maximizes short bursts of learning time is important. After using online language learning apps to learn Spanish, here’s my take on using Babbel vs Duolingo.

Real-Life Language Learning

I am a native speaker of English, although I always wanted to learn a new language. With language learning apps, I found I could easily sneak in a few minutes each day on my phone.

In school, I studied French for several years, and can still understand some of it. The classroom experience is best for learning a new language. Unfortunately, real-life time constraints make that a challenge for most adults.

For my work, Spanish is helpful but not necessary. I studied it briefly years ago but, until recently, I was mostly fluent only in restaurant Spanish along with some basic phases.

I wanted to improve my language skills by learning new words and moving beyond basic three-word sentences.

Babbel Review

Enter the Babbel app.

Babbel is a language app that has been downloaded more than 10 million times. It uses a series of activities to help you learn (or improve upon) reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills in a new language.

This language learning app features high quality content and a professional design. And, one of my favorite features: the audio examples use native speakers with different accents and pronunciations so learners get to hear the differences, for example, between German spoken in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

I signed up for a six month Babbel subscription. There are also 3-month, 12-month and lifetime paid subscriptions and Babbel offers discounts frequently. So far, it feels like it’s worth the cost.

A subscription gives you access to all of the Babbel courses, from basics to business jargon. I recommend planning to dedicate some time to exploring Babbel when you start your subscription so you can decide which courses are right for you and your language learning needs.

The Pros of the Babbel App

  • The program starts with a quick placement test to determine the course level that is best for you.
  • It’s easy to skip around from level to level, or course to course to focus on your individual language learning needs.
  • The multi-lesson Getting Around section teaches helpful phrases that a traveler would need to get around the airport and basic phases for using public transportation. After just a few lessons, I felt more confident using my Spanish when traveling in Mexico: I could ask directions and read the signs in the airport with ease.
  • The learning experience is geared toward adults, not gamified. The app overall is more serious and subdued. l felt more comfortable using this app on my phone in public and professional settings. Unlike other language learning apps that use flashy (and noisy!) game challenges, Babbel’s lessons are professional and subdued.
  • There’s a strong focus on grammar.
  • Lessons take only about 15 minutes, so it’s easy to fit in language learning during small breaks in your schedule – waiting for the bus, in the carpool line at your kid’s school, standing in line at the grocery store or, my favorite time, when I crawl into bed at night.
  • The lessons use real-life examples to illustrate the language, such as learning to express your love for someone in French. What could be more French than that?
  • Babbel works across platforms and syncs your lessons whether you use Babbel on your phone, laptop, desktop, or the web.

The Cons of the Babbel App

  • The free trial is limited – you get access to the first lesson only at each level – Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced, Grammar, etc.) when you register for a Babbel account. You can cancel within 20 days and get your money back.
  • Babbel uses fewer speaking lessons than Duolingo. So I didn’t repeat phases as often as I needed to build my speaking skills.

One of the methods they use is fill-in-the-blank. Photo credit: Catherine Parker

Babbel’s Learning Experience

  • Babbel uses flashcards to help learners.
  • Grammar lessons are integrated into the program.
  • The app uses conversations to help learners listen to the language.
  • Learners can skip around more in the program to focus on their individual language needs.
  • Babbel added bits about culture into its lessons (this made the lessons more interesting.)
  • Babbel offers a podcast featuring native language speakers (included) and live classes (available for an additional fee).
  • Babbel lessons require spelling new words in Spanish early in the lesson. I found this difficult.
  • You can set learning goals and a daily time for taking the lesson and Babbel will send a notification to your phone to remind you that it’s time for class.

Babbel offers lessons in Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Polish, Russian, Dutch, Turkish, Danish, Norwegian, Indonesian and English. Worth noting, it doesn’t offer Arabic.

Duolingo Review

Duolingo offers 45 different languages on its mobile app. This app is frequently used in schools and geared towards students. The experience overall is more gamified and geared toward kids to make the learning fun. Like a video game, language learners compete on a point system to move up the levels.

The interactive learning model uses different methods for different learning styles. From the beginning, I was speaking, repeating full sentences into the app. Don’t worry, it starts slow.

For me, the speaking component was important. When I took a second language in school, I didn’t have the confidence to speak as often as I needed to. Speaking into my phone as Duolingo analyzed my pronunciation didn’t feel intimidating.

The Pros of the Duolingo App

  • The platform is bright and enthusiastic, which engages learners.
  • Duolingo uses different types of exercises, from fill-in sentences to matching pairs. This helps with spelling and writing. The app repeats new words frequently.
  • When you make a mistake, Duolingo will repeat that lesson several times within the lesson.
  • There’s a free version that offers plenty of interactive learning. It’s worth noting, though, that the free version only allows you four to five mistakes a day. Once you’ve hit the limit, you’re locked out until your bank of chances is replenished.
  • From quick-speaking young people to slower-speaking older people, the app helps language learners with a variety of native speakers. There’s a button that lets you slow down the speakers whenever you need to.

The Cons of the Duolingo App

  • Duolingo takes language learners through an entire target language course. It doesn’t offer lessons specifically for travelers.
  • The kid-friendly game-like design doesn’t feel as professional and I wasn’t always comfortable using it in a professional setting.

Duolingo Learning Experience

Listening is another problem area for new language learners. Duolingo gets learners to listen to short conversations and then answer questions on the content. The app will repeat a listening exercise as many times as I need to understand.

Language learners will also translate short paragraphs with a word bank at the bottom. I found this helpful as well. While grammar lessons can be boring, Duolingo adds quick tips instead if you make a mistake.

New language learners will be speaking into the app, as it analyzes the pronunciation. I found this helpful as I gained confidence with my second language.

What to Look for in a Language Learning App

There are several language learning resources on the market and most apps require a monthly subscription. Babbel is one. One of the pioneers, Rosetta Stone, is another. Duolingo is popular among teens thanks in part to its free version.

From beginners to advanced learners, today’s language learning apps cater to an individual learner’s language level.

  • Language learning apps offer instant feedback on your smartphone.
  • The audio or video clips help learners listen to native speakers.
  • Learn a new language and about a new culture.
  • Try it out for free.

For new language learners, definitely try out a free lesson first to see if it meshes with your schedule and learning style.

The Bottom Line: Babbel vs Duolingo

For those who want to learn a few phrases quickly for an upcoming trip, Babbel is the clear winner with its targeted travel lessons.

Busy adults want flexibility to skip around and learn what they need. Babbel offers the greatest flexibility while being effective.

For parents who want to learn a language with their kids, then the game-like Duolingo app is the way to go.

As a frequent traveler and busy mom juggling the chaos of life, I’ve always struggled with maintaining a healthy sleep schedule, especially during and after trips. Whether it’s adjusting to new time zones or trying to quiet my racing mind at home, staying asleep through the night has always been a challenge.

When I first heard about the Lumos Sleep Mask, I was intrigued by the technology that harnesses light therapy to regulate your body’s natural sleep-wake cycle. Light therapy is all the rave these days so I was curious to give the mask a try.

The Science Behind Light Therapy

A photo of the light inside the Lumos sleep mask.
Lumos sleep mask uses light therapy to improve jet lag.

The Lumos Sleep Mask uses scientifically backed light therapy to influence your body’s circadian rhythm. (That’s the internal clock that tells you when to sleep and wake.)

What sets this mask apart is the science behind its light flashes. During sleep, the mask emits brief light pulses that penetrate your eyelids. Based on research from Stanford University, these light pulses have been shown to effectively shift your circadian clock. For travelers, this means tricking your brain into believing you’re in a different time zone, allowing you to adjust to a new sleep schedule.

Rather than requiring users to completely overhaul their sleep and daily routines before a trip, the mask is designed to work with your existing schedule. The light therapy programs are customized to align with your usual sleep patterns, making adjustments subtly and effectively without asking you to make inconvenient or unrealistic changes to your schedule.

It’s like having a tool that adapts to your life rather than the other way around.

The Lumos Smart Sleep Mask technology has been extensively tested and refined through collaborations with NASA, the US Department of Defense, and the National Science Foundation

Using the Lumos Sleep Mask to Combat Jet Lag

Let’s start with the travel perks because, for me, adjusting to a different time zone is one of the hardest parts of being on the go. That’s why having the Lumos sleep mask as your handy travel companion is a good idea.

The Lumos app that can be found in the App Store, it’s easy to navigate and makes preparing for a time zone change or potential jet lag a breeze! The app will ask you if you’re preparing for travel, from there it will walk you through a series of questions such as flight times, destinations, layovers etc.

What’s particularly helpful is that the light programs are designed to begin before your trip, allowing you to gradually adapt your body’s schedule before you even arrive at your destination. Just use the mask a night or two before your trip during your normal sleep schedule and it will do all the work!

This proactive approach minimizes the disruptive effects of jet lag, making the transition to a new time zone much smoother compared to using the mask as a reactive measure during or after travel.

The key here is following the app’s directions. One of our travel experts recently used the mask during her long flight. She posted a video of her experience here.

It’s also very easy to use and travel with. Unlike bulky sleep gadgets, the Lumos fits snugly in my carry-on and feels lightweight on my face.

At-Home Sleep Game-Changer

Woman wearing the Lumos sleep mask
Our travel expert Sophia Orlando says she is “getting the best sleep of her life” using the Lumos sleep mask.

While I initially was excited to use the Lumos for travel, I quickly realized it’s just as effective at home. Staying asleep through the night has always been my Achilles’ heel, but the Lumos has been working to help me stay asleep longer (something I’ve been trying to fix for years). I’ve noticed my sleep feels deeper and more restful too.

One thing I appreciate is how customizable the settings are. You can adjust the intensity of the light, the duration of the therapy sessions, and even tailor it to your specific sleep challenges.

For me, that’s waking up at 3 a.m. and struggling to fall back asleep. The Lumos Mask includes a module designed to help with this by gradually adjusting the circadian clock in my body. Over time, this adjustment helps ensure that when 3 a.m. comes around, my body’s internal clock signals that I should stay asleep, rather than waking up. This indirect approach has made a noticeable difference in the quality of my rest.

Tips for Success

Here’s what I’ve learned about making the most of the Lumos Sleep Mask:

Follow the App’s Schedule: If you’re using the Lumos Sleep Mask to combat jet lag, begin using it just one night before your trip. There’s no need to adjust your bedtime or change your routine—simply put on the mask at your usual bedtime and start the light program. During the night, the mask’s light pulses will help shift your circadian clock, preparing your body for the time zone change. This makes adapting to your destination much smoother.

Create a Sleep-Friendly Environment: While the mask does a lot of the heavy lifting, pairing it with good sleep hygiene—like a dark, quiet room and no screens before bed—makes it even more effective.

Give Yourself the Gift of Better Sleep

The Lumos Sleep Mask with Light Therapy is a worthwhile investment, both as a traveler and someone who struggles with sleep at home. It’s not a miracle cure, but it’s a powerful tool that has genuinely improved my ability to stay asleep.

If you’re someone who battles with jet lag, inconsistent sleep, or just wants to feel more in control of your sleep patterns, I highly recommend giving the Lumos a try.

Just remember: consistency is key. With a little commitment, you might just find yourself waking up on the right side of the bed, no matter where in the world you are.

I’ve got four kids. There are 13 years between the oldest and the youngest and it blows my mind how much baby gear has evolved. So many things exist now that were never around when my oldest was an infant. When we watched a friend’s 2-month-old, it made me realize that baby travel essentials aren’t just for travel. Since our friend had all “the gear” she was able to easily leave us what she needed to watch her baby so she could attend to a family emergency. Shopping for your little one can be mind-boggling. Then you ask for recommendations and it gets even harder! Everyone loves something different. There are so many options that decision fatigue sets in. These are the products my fellow SheBuysTravel contributors and I use and love.

Travel Car Seats

The question here is: infant car seat vs convertible car seat? Each has advantages. Convertible car seats can be more expensive to buy, but they save money over time because they are “convertible.” Evenflo’s All4One convertible car seat took us from infant through preschool. Some even convert into booster seats. That means they carry your big kid all the way to regular seat belt use. Here’s the downside: They are beasts. They’re heavy. Many don’t fit standard airline seats and transferring them from one car to another is a chore, let alone moving them from plane to rental car. On the other hand, an infant car seat is lightweight and easy to move baby around in. Some even pair with lightweight stroller options, which makes them work great for travel. The downside? You’ll end up buying another seat once they grow out of it.

One we love is the Peg Perego Primo Viaggo. In my opinion, it’s one of the best on the market for under $300. My paramedic husband referred to this as “Fort Knox for babies.” Some of the reasons we love it include its narrow base which helps it fit into a backseat with other car seats and European safety features not yet required in the US.

Read More: Learn how to install a car seat with no base, what to look for in a travel car seat and the one car seat safety travel tip most parents overlook.

Travel Strollers We Love

This post is intended to be the quick and easy overview to our favorite travel baby products. Rest assured we’ve done some really in depth articles if you want more information. Here are our picks for strollers in all price ranges for all family types. And here is the quick scoop on our favorites: If you’re bringing an infant in an infant car seat, choose a lightweight stroller with a folding basket base. They are lightweight and easy to use. The infant car seat sits on top. Best of all, you can easily transfer a sleeping baby from car to stroller.

Baby Trend makes one that accepts numerous brands of car seats. If you plan to travel extensively or are out and about a lot, choose the upscale Doona, which sells for $550 on Amazon. It’s an infant car seat that turns into a stroller! Seriously, it’s like magic. The wheels come right out of the car seat. If your baby is slightly older, the Pockit can be a great choice. This is the Swiss Army knife of strollers. It’s easy to get through TSA and folds small enough to fit into an overhead airplane bin.

Must-Have Diaper Change Supplies

While you’re traveling, you won’t have a changing table and diaper pail nearby. But there are ways to make roadside diaper changes easier and more comfy for baby. The first thing you’re going to want is a nice folding changing pad. There are a LOT of choices. In my opinion, there are two key things to look for: a handle and a spot to carry bags. This makes it easy to carry the diaper changing supplies and the baby. Plus, it gives you the ability to wrap up stinky diapers in a bag when you’re in tight spaces (plane, car) without that odor-blocking diaper pail.

Most good changing pads will have a couple of mesh sections or pockets for baby wipes, a change of baby clothes, extra diapers and even butt cream if diaper rash is a concern. These changing pads are great for a quick run into a restroom or an airplane diaper change. To tote all the goods, though, you’ll want to consider a full diaper bag. In my humble opinion there are two things that make a diaper bag worth having: good accessible space and easy portability. We’ve veered towards backpack styles that can be easily carried and large tote bag style travel bags for overnights.

SheBuysTravel Tip: Don’t limit your internet search to “diaper bags” only. Sometimes the best bags have been gym bags or regular backpacks. One of my all time favorites was a Champion gym tote. For $25, it had great straps and enough room for supplies when we were cloth diapering. Learn More: Here’s how to change a diaper on an airplane.

Baby Travel Essentials: Feeding

Keeping baby happy and fed on the road doesn’t have to be a hassle. I look for space-saving items that make my life easier. No SheBuysTravel is going to haul a high chair on the road. Luckily, there are some fun travel ones to make feeding time easier. Some are fabric and some are basically mini versions of high chairs. Personally, I think the fabric ones are more versatile but the mini ones come with trays, so they tend to feel more familiar to little ones. What did we do before the squeezable baby food pouch? Seriously, those things are travel life savers.

One product I promise you will love as much as I do is this pouch with a spoon that screws right onto it. It is perfect for babies who are still being spoon-fed and can’t hold and squeeze the pouch themselves. Pouches are easier to pack and less likely to break. The spoon addition makes them perfect. I also bought reusable food pouches. They’ve been used through one baby/toddler. My older kids use them for yogurt and snacks at school. Two years later, they’re still going strong. It’s a great way to serve applesauce or yogurt for snacks.

How to Keep Baby Bottles Clean When You Travel

For bottles and sippy cups, it’s important to bring what your kiddo is used to. There are disposable sippy cups on the market that can be convenient for travel, but if your toddler has never used that type before, it might not be a success. I strongly recommend giving any new bottles or sippy cups a test run at home before you hit the road. My oldest daughter would only drink from Dr. Brown bottles. They have a bunch of small parts.

I was SO happy to discover microwave sanitizing bags. I tuck the parts into the bag and pop the whole thing into the hotel room microwave. It’s super easy. The bags can be used to sanitize everything from baby bottle parts to pacifiers to breast pump attachments and teethers. If you want to bring a bottle brush, I recommend a silicone one so you can easily dry it off before repacking. We all know that babies are messy. Bring bibs. There are some plastic wipe-clean ones that are great for travel. Baby swaddle blankets and muslin blankets also are great for protecting baby’s outfit. They’re thin and can easily provide a food or breast milk barrier and are great for cleaning up spit up.

Sleeping Away from Home: Baby Travel Gear You Need

When you’ve got a new baby who has settled into some sort of routine, sleeping away from home can present some challenges. One way to make it easier? Plan for future travel even if you don’t know when it will happen. How? Well, for us it was using a small sound machine every night. At home, it was necessary because of those three older (loud) siblings. It paid off when we traveled, though. Our son associated the white noise with sleep. In Pavlovian fashion, he fell asleep easily in hotel rooms once we turned on the machine.

Now, let’s talk about cribs. By the fourth kid, we were done with cribs. In fact, my husband wrote an entire post on why you don’t need a crib. Our youngest slept in a pack-and-play-style bed until he graduated to a tent-style pack-and-play. Most hotels say they have cribs available. Ninety percent of the time those “cribs” turn out to be pack n’ plays. So if kiddo is used to it, they’ll sleep better. Pack an extra pack-and-play sheet and a baby blanket in your luggage. They’ve been missing in many of the places where we’ve stayed. Serious travelers may want to consider a more travel-friendly option like the Lotus travel crib, which folds down into a backpack-sized case.

Traveling with a newborn? A pack-and-play is awkward to use and feels way too big for baby. The Munchkin Brica Baby Travel Pod opens with the push of a button and is lightweight for easy travel.

Other Baby Travel Essentials for Sleep

Night lights. Although “no one puts Baby in the corner,” we’ve definitely had our baby sleep in a closet. When you’re trying to get one kid to sleep without making everyone else turn in, placing the crib creatively is the answer. Our youngest has slept in a Four Seasons Jackson Hole closet (with the door cracked open) larger than my upstairs bathroom and we were glad we had the nightlight with us to cast that comforting warm glow.

Soother. This is baby’s comfort item. The best baby can go from chill to crying if a loved soother is forgotten. If your kiddo has a favorite stuffed animal, do not forget it. Also, new moms, if there’s an item that your baby loves, please learn from my mistake. Buy two. Inevitably, at some point it will go missing or be left behind and having a substitute is worth its weight in gold.

Sleep swaddle. Hotel rooms can sometimes be chilly, so consider packing a heavier sleeper or even sleep swaddle to bundle up baby. They’re often easier to pack than baby blankets and easier to wash. We used to keep the blanket for the car and use swaddles at night. Also not to age myself but sleep swaddles are amazing! When my oldest was young we didn’t have them and had to baby burrito him by hand. Sleep swaddles are one of my all-time favorite baby products.

Baby Travel Items that Make Bath Time Easier

Bath time can be a little tricky if you’re staying in hotels that don’t have bathtubs. We might have been a bit more casual about baths while traveling and given some baby wipe baths. But a lot of folks use bath time as part of their nighttime routine. Travel bathtubs have gotten way better over the years. Even folded in half, they were huge. Now, plenty exist that pack completely flat.

I highly recommend a lay-flat baby bath over an inflatable tub. There’s room for mildew and trapped water and no one wants to be drying a tub off as they’re trying to get out of a hotel room. The sponge-y material ones can turn any sink into a spot for baby to bathe.

Read More: All the Tips You Need for Taking Baby on a Road Trip

How to Ditch the Baby Bath Tub

Another method is to get baby used to the shower. My oldest daughter had colic and breastfeeding was a struggle for us. One of the ways I calmed her was to take her in to a warm shower with me. The water soothed her. Why am I telling you all this? Well, I obviously didn’t want to hold a slippery baby every time I showered, so I found a baby carrier designed for swimming and water. It changed everything. Now, bathing baby on the road is as simple as putting the baby in the ring sling.

For safety reasons, always choose a sling with metal rings (plastic can degrade). The rings should have no visible seams on them. Pick a pricier option that’s been safety tested. Beachfront Baby has great options in a variety of colors. The slings have been chlorine tested, too. If a ring sling seems hard to use, consider a Boba Air soft structured carrier (SSC). The nylon material is quick drying and it folds up tiny. We used it at water parks several times.

A Baby Travel Monitor

Not necessary for hotel stays, but a baby travel monitor is helpful when visiting relatives’ homes or when staying in a multi-room vacation rental. The VTech DM221 Audio Baby Monitor has a soothing night light too – we love products that do double duty!

Baby Carriers: The Must-Have Travel Baby Product

Baby carriers are my all-time favorite baby travel essentials. I started with a Baby Bjorn with my almost 18 year old son and have worn every baby since. It is easy for me to fall down a baby product black hole when talking about carriers. So I’m going to mention some of my favorite soft structured carriers that are readily available to the general public.

Tula is a brand name that many new parents know. There are two main types: solid fabric or the Coast, which is a mix of fabric and mesh. Whichever one you buy, add Frogg Toggs to the order if you’ll be wearing it in the summer. These cooling towels absorb cold water and don’t drip. You can use them to make a cool layer between you and your older baby. You will stay cool without getting wet. I prefer the Tula because it is easy to switch so it also fits my larger husband. In addition, it easily went from baby to toddler.

We also had an ergobaby for my daughters but design changes over the years weren’t my favorite. If you have back problems the LILLEbaby can be a good option; it offers additional lumbar support. There are some cheaper entry brands like Infantino. As baby grows, they may not have some of the comfort elements for you that the pricier carriers offer.

Name Brands Do Matter

No matter what you do, look for name brands. Baby carriers are required to be safety tested in the US. No name options shipping on Amazon may not adhere to those requirements. Love hiking with baby? Check out hiking style carriers for added storage room and stability. (And read our tips for hiking with babies!)

Baby Products that Make Road Trips Easier

If you’re road tripping with baby, you want to be as prepared as humanly possible. I totally get it. Road trips can hold a lot of unknowns (traffic, potty stops, etc) so being ready for anything is essential. The good part? You’re the captain of your destiny. Here are 6 things I always pack for to make road trips easier.

A Silicone Bucket

Puke happens. If baby is tiny, you obviously won’t be able to use a bucket for spit up (and you won’t really need one). But a bucket is useful for other things — dirty clothes, toting toys and even playing with at stops. Silicone buckets are a lifesaver because they collapse. They are space saving until you need them.

A Mirror

It doesn’t have to be fancy. Buy one before your trip. Trust me. I found myself in upstate New York panic buying one at Target. Fun story, they don’t carry the cheap ones in store. I ended up with an expensive one that played music and had a remote control. After dropping $40 on that, I had to go back in and buy scissors to open the package. Don’t make my mistakes. Get a simple cheap baby mirror. If you’re sitting in traffic you’ll be glad you can see baby.

Scissors

Did you see the story above? Make sure there are scissors in the car. Yes, they’re not a “baby item” but there will be a reason to use them. In fact, get trauma shears. They can cut through practically anything (and can replace those special seat belt cutting safety tools).

First Aid Kit

Seriously, it’s not just because my husband is a paramedic but yes it kind of is. Bring a basic first aid kit when you travel. Even if you do something as simple as getting a minor cut it becomes complicated if you have to go on a band-aid hunt with a baby.

Seat Back Organizer

A seat back organizer, even a super basic one, will come in super handy on road trips with baby. You can fill it with diapers, wipes, bottles of water and more so that everything is easily within reach at stops.

Extra Binkies/Teethers

If your baby likes to chew on things bring extra. For some reason, cars become binkie black holes on road trips. They enter but never come out. Buy in bulk.

The Right Toys

You want Junior to stay entertained in the car but please take this advice to preserve your own sanity: Limit toys that make noise, have parts, or are hard to clean. My secret? Tub toys. They’re sturdy, washable, easily sanitized and are usually bright and popular with babies. Bathtub books are also very easy for another child to read to baby and they double as a chew toy!

Sunscreen and a Sunshade

If you’ll be hitting the road for hours at a time, consider sunscreen for the baby. While sunshades are great and can help block glare, constant car sun exposure can have an impact. We round up our favorite baby and toddler sunscreens in this post. I’m a huge fan of the sunshades that come with both window clips (that go over the window as it rolls up) and suction cups. That way nothing falls off the window. We share way more about road tripping with a baby over here. Check out our full post of tips, tricks and what you need to know.

Ever feel like finding the perfect gift is like searching for a needle in a haystack? Trust me, I’ve been there. As someone who’s always jetting from one place to another, I’ve realized that it’s the memories we make, not the stuff we buy, that really counts. So, when it was time to come up with gift ideas for my friend Lauren, I was determined to find something that wouldn’t just end up gathering dust on a shelf.

Now, I could’ve gone the easy route and picked up a gift card, but that just didn’t feel right. It lacked the personal touch I was going for. Then, like a light at the end of the gift-giving tunnel, I found Tinggly’s Gift Boxes.

This isn’t just a Tinggly review; it’s a firsthand account of how Tinggly turned me into the ultimate gift-giving hero!

Why Experiences Make the Best Gifts

What’s so cool about Tinggly? It lets the person getting the gift pick from tons of fun experiences all over the world. My friend Lauren used her Tinggly gift to spice up her vacation. She went on an awesome kayaking trip through some mangroves in Florida.

The best part? She got to pick the adventure she wanted. It was all her choice. And guess what Lauren said “We had a magical time with Get Up And Go Kayaking. I loved adding an experience to our vacation using my gift from Tinggly.”

Let’s be real, we all have way too much stuff. Science even says that doing things rather than having things makes us happier in the long run. So, when I picked out a Tinggly gift, I wasn’t just trying to be different. I wanted to give my friend something she’d really remember.

What Types of Gift Experiences Does Tinggly Offer?

I no longer have to wander through aisles or scroll Amazon for “things” — with Tinggly gift boxes, you’re offering a universe of experience gifts, each one a potential adventure. Here’s a sneak peek at some of the gift collections that they offer:

  • Bucketlist: There are currently over 10K experiences to choose from in this collection. From bungee jumping to sailing on a catamaran, this is the perfect option for someone who loves checking things off their bucket list.
  • Happily Ever After: What a unique wedding gift – a gateway to over 1,000 experiences across the globe. It’s not just a gift; it’s an invitation for the happy couple to enjoy unforgettable memories together. The best part? Each experience is designed for two, allowing them to bask in magical moments together, all thanks to your thoughtful gesture.
  • Perfect for Him: Perfect for any man in your life! No matter his hobbies or interests he will love the options that Tinggly has to choose from. This could be great for anniversaries too!
  • Perfect for Her: Whether she is into cooking classes or hot air balloon rides, this collection will give her so many options!

In addition, there are many other collections, experiences, hotel stays and more to choose from. You can sort through options by location, occasion and type of experience. Then your loved one can choose from the options in each of those categories.

In gifting Tinggly, I discovered it’s more than just handing over a present; it’s sharing the thrill of possibility. Now, my go-to is brightening the days of those I care about with a touch of adventure, a dose of calm, or a hearty helping of discovery. It feels like giving them a key to a world where they pinpoint their own perfect adventure.

Do These Gift Vouchers Have an Expiration Date?

Tinggly gifts come with no expiration date, allowing recipients the luxury of time to plan their adventures. However, there’s a small caveat worth noting: if the recipient does not book an experience or hotel stay within one year from the purchase date, the voucher won’t go to waste. Instead, it morphs into credit.

Here’s how it works: the value of the unclaimed voucher is transferred to the recipient’s Tinggly account balance. From there, freedom reigns. The credit is not confined to the original gift box but can be used to snag anything on the Tinggly website.

This is just another one of the many reasons why I think Tinggly is one of the best gift-giving options. Amazing experiences with no expiration date sound good to me!

SheBusyTravel Tip: Looking for more gift ideas? Check out our gift guide for women and men.

Would I Recommend a Tinggly Experience?

The answer is easily YES! I feel like these are the best gifts. It’s simple, Tinggly encourages you to give stories, not stuff.

If you’re looking for a gift that captures the essence of adventure and offers a truly personal touch, I strongly recommend considering Tinggly. You’re not just giving a present; you’re gifting an experience that could be the highlight of someone’s trip. Experiences offer life-long memories and I think that’s genuinely priceless.

And let’s not forget, Tinggly’s offering comes with a twofold benefit: It’s not only an unforgettable gift but also a sustainable one. Each Physical Gift Box plants and protects trees, and the eVoucher option eliminates the need for shipping, plastics and paper altogether.

Visit the Tinggly website at tinggly.com to learn more. Check out other customers reviews to see why they loved gifting and receiving this type of gift and why you can feel confident when you choose Tinggly.

This is my personal favorite place to go to for unique gifts. I’d happily be the recipient of one of these gift boxes too (hint, hint).

PROPS gave us a suitcase for review purposes.

Luggage is the common denominator among all our travel experiences. And let’s face it, luggage designs have stagnated over the years. Now, PROPS luggage has dramatically redefined the game with its built-in legs!

As someone who is constantly tugging luggage through airports and hotel rooms thanks to my dual-travel life (balancing work and leisure), I’ve grown quite particular about my carry-on choices. I have a definite checklist of indispensable features. Thanks to PROPS’ ingenious design, that list now includes luggage with legs!

You can use code shebuystravel10 for an exclusive discount (10%) off any PROPS luggage.

Here is my full PROPS luggage review.

Luggage with Legs

Honestly, this thing has features I didn’t even know I needed. The PROPS leg system? Genius! It stands firm on its own. It’s got this robust, but super lightweight polycarbonate hard shell, and dual-spinner wheels that are as smooth as butter.

The unique top-lid opening was a game-changer for me too because that meant I could easily dig around inside the main compartment without disrupting my carefully-packed belongings! Plus, it’s got a TSA-approved lock, so no more mini heart attacks at security.

The legs are easy to fold and unfold for use. They are designed to fold into the back of the luggage so they do not get in the way when you’re trying to stow your carry-on in the overhead bin. It’s a very simple functionality with a sleek design.

  • Interior compression system to keep belongings secure
  • Telescopic trolley handle, adjustable across three stages
  • Multiple carry handles located at the top, side, and bottom
  • Trustworthy YKK zippers ensure smooth operation
  • Integrated combination lock, TSA-approved for hassle-free security checks
  • Convenient expansion zipper to accommodate those extra souvenirs and travel purchases

Putting it to the Real Test

So, I took my PROPS bag with me on my last trip, and it was the MVP. Airport, city streets, a tiny bathroom in a tiny Airbnb — this luggage just gets it. The leg system made sure it stayed put without needing a wall to lean on. It stood its ground, and I easily unpacked without everything toppling over.

There were two noticeable times when the leg system came in handy for me:

1) When I didn’t have a luggage rack in my room. I just used the legs and it kept me from having to move my luggage on and off the bed.

2) During my layovers at the airport. I could use the PROPS luggage as an instant work surface and set my laptop on top of it. This was great not only to catch up on some emails between flights but also to easily binge watch my favorite Netflix show before my flight.

A Mom’s Ingenuity Changed the Luggage Game

PROPS luggage was designed by a mom who traveled with her four girls and was tired of never finding enough luggage racks and trying to stay organized while traveling. She was basically like, “enough is enough” and designed travel gear that could stand on its own — literally.

It’s such an inspiring story and speaks volumes about how necessity truly is the mother of invention.

Ideal for…Well, Everyone!

Whether you’re a man or a woman traveling solo, with a family or with friends, or jetting off for work, this suitcase doesn’t discriminate. It’s sleek enough for business professionals and sturdy enough for adventurers.

Personally, I will use it mostly when traveling for work and for day trips. I noticed that the PROPS luggage seemed to be smaller than my normal carry-on luggage so I had to use the expansion zipper and will continue to use it only for short getaways.

Kim Orlando, Founder of SheBuysTravel, provides a notable remark to remember when selecting your ideal PROPS luggage, “It’s a great weekend bag and I like the option of using it as a table. I wouldn’t recommend the white (ICE) one because scuff marks are hard to remove.”

The PROPS luggage comes in 4 colors; ICE, IVORY, MIDNIGHT and GRAPHITE. I would recommend the darker colors (midnight & graphite) so that any scuff marks are less visible.

Bottom Line

In a nutshell, if you’re still lugging around that ancient suitcase with the wonky wheel, it’s time for an upgrade. PROPS Luggage has reinvented the wheel (quite literally) in the luggage department. This luggage could be your new favorite travel hack.

Travel is just better with a cozy travel blanket. When you’re delayed, miss a flight or are trying to catch a snooze in a random airport you’ll be happy to have one. Ditto when the child who “never gets cold” suddenly is chilled to the bone on a road trip. We’re laying out everything you need to know when selecting a travel blanket. These are some of our favorite travel blankets that are easy to wash, will actually fit back in the bag and showcase your unique and fun personality.

Best Travel Blankets Worth the Higher Price Tag

Rumpl The Original Puffy – Camping Blanket

Why be boring? Do you really want to have the same black fleece travel blanket that folds into a travel pillow that every other traveler has? This one is premium, but worth every penny! Some colors and patterns are cheaper. This sleeping bag type blanket is made from 100 percent recycled materials and comes in 20 colors/patterns. We love how high-quality this blanket feels.

  • Rolls up like a sleeping bag
  • Blanket measures 52 inches x75 inches
  • Filled with warm insulation but is still odor- and water-resistant
  • Comes with a stuff sack
  • Blanket has loops on the corners so you can make it wearable with the addition of small carabiners, perfect for the grumpy teen in your life

Hug Sleep, Sleep Pod

The Hug Sleep, Sleep Pod (as seen on Shark Tank) isn’t a traditional travel blanket. You’re probably not going to whip this one out to wear on the plane. You sleep inside this pod for a restful night’s sleep, even when you’re in an unfamiliar bed. This option is perfect for travelers who normally sleep with a weighted blanket. Weighted blankets are impractical to travel with but this substitute provides compression that “hugs you back.”

  • Machine washable
  • Breathable and provides temperature regulation while it wicks moisture away from you.
  • Perfect for partners or kids who kick in their sleep or try to starfish across the whole bed. They won’t be able to in this pod.
  • If you’re already splurging on this blanket, get the one with the hood! It makes it so much better and can sub in for an eye mask.

Best Mid-Range Travel Blankets

Pavilia Travel Blanket with Zipper and Carrying Strap

This option is the MVP of multi-purpose. Not only is it a travel blanket, but it can also act as lumbar support, a travel pillow and a hand warmer. When zipped closed, it measures 11 inches x12 inches but unfurled it’s 60 inches x 43 inches. The carry strap and zippered case make it the perfect airplane blanket.

  • Material is a soft micro plush fleece that will not pill
  • Machine Washable
  • Warm and cozy
  • Routinely goes on sale in certain colors so check them all

BlueHills Premium Soft Travel Blanket

This soft travel blanket packs into a travel pillow. It won’t shed and the micro plush is machine washable. We love the color choices and have found that this item often has an Amazon coupon available.

  • Plush comfy fabric
  • Has a hand luggage belt to slide over suitcase handles or use the clip to attach it to a bag
  • Measures 60×43
  • Versatile design lets you use it as a pillow when you don’t need a blanket
  • Available in multipacks if everyone in your family wants one

SAGEFINDS Lightweight Travel Blanket

If you’re familiar with the travel gear world at all, you’re likely to recognize the name Magellan. The company’s gear is quality and this travel blanket doesn’t disappoint. SAGEFINDS Luxe Travel Magellan’s blanket comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee.

  • Compactly folds to 9x6x1.5 inches. Measures 60×45 open.
  • Cotton/polyester combo unlike most blankets that are 100 percent polyester
  • Great for travelers who are on long trips and may want to wash the blanket in a hotel room using sud packs.
  • Comes with a separate carrying pouch that has a strap for luggage attachment and a loop for a carabiner.
  • Truly lightweight and great for climates where you don’t want fleece.

EverSnug Travel Blanket and Pillow

If you’re looking for a blanket and travel pillow set, EverSnug is one that feels luxe and soft. This compact blanket comes in several different colors. It folds up small and you don’t even need to fit it in your luggage because the travel case slides over a suitcase handle.

  • Plush material is perfect for cuddling up on a long flight or a layover.
  • Hard to lose since you can slide it over your suitcase handle or use the carabiner clip to fasten it to a bag.
  • 6 color choices
  • Offered in 2 packs for a great price if you need a few for your family
  • Able to be used as a pillow or blanket

Cocoon CoolMax Blanket

Widely known by travelers, the Cocoon CoolMax Blanket is lightweight, versatile and machine washable on the gentle cycle. We’ve found this option to be shockingly warm and prefer it over fleece. It’s perfect for air travel and frigid planes.

  • Packs into a drawstring carry-on bag
  • Strap to put it over luggage handles
  • Larger than most other travel blankets at 55×70
  • Measures roughly 8×4 when rolled and put into the carry bag
  • Available in a variety of vibrant colors that are hard to lose

Proglobe Travel Set

Why do we love this one? Well, it has everything! This set includes a neck pillow, ear plugs, eye mask and carry bag that folds out into a premier class travel blanket.

  • Memory foam neck pillow is adjustable
  • Carry pouch has a pocket for earbuds and other small items
  • Super soft polar fleece blanket
  • Blanket measures 39×45

Litume Travel Blanket

This compact travel blanket may cost a bit more but in our opinion it’s 100 percent worth it. Not only is it larger than most blankets at 67×48 but it packs smaller! The microfleece velour material is extremely breathable while still being machine washable. This option is versatile to most travel scenarios from road trips to long flights to camping. You won’t lose any space in your carry-on luggage with this compact blanket.

  • Extremely portable, packing down to just 6″x 4″ (roughly the size and weight of an iPhone Max)
  • Lightweight and breathable weighing in at just over 8 ounces
  • Comes with a stuff sack
  • Material is moisture-wicking, anti-static and durable

Best Low-Cost Travel Blankets

Does your family constantly misplace things? Do you want to grab a few blankets at a bargain price and not be upset when they go missing? These are the best options for travelers on a budget. They may not be as compact but they’re certainly more wallet-friendly.

World’s Best Cozy Soft Microfleece Travel Blanket

With a winning price point, this $13 packable travel blanket is a great option. You’ll have your choice of multiple colors and patterns.

I do recommend steering clear of black and gray if you’ll be using rental cars. Somehow those colors always manage to blend into rental car trunks and get forgotten. (Ask me how I know this!)

  • Microfleece, lightweight travel blanket folds up small
  • Machine Washable
  • Great for home use as well

Tirrinia Travel Blanket

There’s a lot to love about this option. First of all, it’s a wearable poncho-style blanket! Made out of lightweight plush micro-fleece it boasts a zippered pocket to store your phone/Airpods/etc in. We use this travel blanket for long road trips, flights and at home!

  • Has a carrying case with a convenient loop to attach it to bags
  • Machine Washable
  • Static free fabric

forest fish Fleece Throw Blanket

Looking for a compact blanket that’s thin enough to keep in the car but still blocks cold air? This is the option for you. It’s plush and comfy, perfect to cuddle up with on road trips or flights. It comes in multiple patterns, offering the option to pick one that matches your aesthetic.

  • Comes with its own stuff-sack-style carrying bag
  • Machine washable
  • Measures 60×40
  • Doubles as a great option for sports events, viewing outdoor Christmas lights and picnics
  • Unique patterns will make it easy to spot your blanket

4Monster Microfiber Towel

If we’re getting technical, this one is really a towel and not a travel blanket. However, the XXL size measures 35 inches x 71 inches and is the perfect length and width for an airplane seat. I cannot overstate how handy this came in on international trips. It’s super absorbent. After an impromptu rafting trip, I was the only one with a towel and we managed to dry off 2 adults and 3 kids with it.

  • Nice carrying case that zips shut and has a handle
  • Soft microfiber that is durable
  • Multiple color options
  • Dual purpose- warm enough to be a blanket and you’ll always have a towel on hand

Best Travel Blankets for Kids

Canoogles Wearable Hooded Blanket

These comfy, machine washable blankets come in multiple styles for kids. What kid doesn’t want to be a unicorn, dinosaur, lion or elephant? These wearable blankets double as a plaything.

  • Blanket is designed poncho-style
  • 40”x50” perfect size for kids who are roughly 2-6 years old
  • Accidents happen. This blanket is easy-on, easy-off and is machine washable.
  • Wearable-style allows parents to easily pick up a sleeping child

Burrito Blanket

This one should require no explanation but we’re going to dive in anyways. Have you ever dreamed of turning yourself into a giant soft taco? These super soft blankets come in multiple sizes (so that you can be a street taco, waffle, pie or a giant burrito). Their carry bag means they pack up easily for road trips and flights. The fun with these travel blankets doesn’t stop after the trip. You’ll find these bring joy at home as well making them worth the $20 price tag. We love that they:

  • Come in multiple sizes
  • Have several patterns available in case you’d rather be a waffle, cookie or pepperoni pizza
  • Includes a travel carry bag
  • Great for kids
  • Lightweight and soft

A great travel blanket can make every trip more pleasant. Heading on a long flight? We’ve got other recommendations to make it more pleasant.

No one wants to think about a family vacation ending in tragedy. When planning a family ski trip, the number one thing you need to pack are the kids’ ski helmets. First timer? Sizing your children for their helmets is an important step. Kids grow. Recheck your kids’ ski helmets annually for proper fit. Read on for the best kids’ ski helmets.

Best Kids Ski Helmets to Buy Before Your Trip

Wildhorn Spire Snow Helmet with Ski Goggles

For younger skiers (recommended for ages 3-8), we love the Wildhorn Spire Snow Helmet with UV protection ski goggles.

We love:

  • Dial system ensures helmet is fitted to your child’s head correctly
  • Ability to adjust as your child grows
  • They’re the official supplier for the US Ski Team
  • Adorable cartoon yeti design
  • Ventilation channels wick moisture out of the helmet so it doesn’t interfere with visibility

Giro Crue MIPS Snow Helmet

More adventurous kids, benefit from helmets with MIPS technology, like this Giro Crue MIPS helmet. MIPS helmets feature a low-friction layer that reduces rotational motion to the brain if impact occurs. Translation: your daredevil child’s noggin will be better protected.

We love:

  • The sleek skate park-style design
  • Bright, kid-approved colors like lime green, blue and red
  • Form fit system is designed to easily adjust- even when parents are wearing gloves

Giro Launch MIPS Helmet with Ski Goggles Combo

If you want to buy the ski helmet and goggles together this MIPS helmet option from Giro includes both. Ordering them together is an easy way to make sure the goggles fit properly with the helmet without any gaps or rubbing.

Retrospec Comstock Youth Ski & Snowboard Helmet

This Retrospec Comstock Youth Helmet caught our eye for several reasons.

  • Tough ABS exterior
  • EPS foam interior with soft, cushy padding around earmuffs
  • Adjustable padded chinstrap
  • Rear goggle clip to keep them secured to the helmet
  • Wide range of on-trend color options

OutdoorMaster Kelvin Ski Helmet

Another great snow sport helmet for skiers ages 5 and up is the OutdoorMaster Kelvin Ski Helmet. We love:

  • ABS hard outer shell with EPS core
  • Fleece ear pads and liner are removable for washing
  • More sizes available compared to other kids’ ski helmets
  • Tons of ventilation- 14 individual vents in total
  • Larger sizing options for older kids
  • Whopping 13 color options

Details on Kids’ Ski Helmets That You Need to Know

My kids desperately wanted to go skiing. I was not and never had been a skier. As my young kids and I walked up to the ski rental counter at the resort, we were clueless. We didn’t know what size we were or what ski gear we needed. Stress levels rose as I juggled different-sized winter sport helmets and boots, hoping to quickly find the right sizing so I didn’t hold up the line.

Looking back, I wish I had been more prepared. Understanding the pros and cons between renting kids’ ski helmets and other winter gear and purchasing would have made decisions easier. Reading tips on how to find the right sizing when choosing a kid ski helmet would have made me more confident.

Since that first trip to the slopes, we’ve learned a lot. We even bought some winter sports gear (like helmets) instead of renting them from the resorts. But renting is a great option for first time skiers and those who ski infrequently.

Renting Winter Clothing with Kitlender

Now that you’ve chosen ski helmets for your kids, you can move on to outerwear. To stay protected it is very important to wear the right clothing on the slopes. Cotton clothing tends to stay wet and regular street shoes just won’t cut it in the heavy snow and cold.

There are lots of reasons to rent winter clothing and gear instead of purchasing it. It can be a great option for:

  • New skiers who want to make sure they’ll stick with the winter sport
  • Growing kids who are rapidly needing new sizes
  • Residents of warmer climates who only need winter gear for occasional trips
  • Those who want premium gear at a lower cost

Kit Lender offers both the ability to rent your ski gear or purchase packages of ready-to-go gear. It saves hours of research! Ski KITs are rented at 90% off of the retail cost and include free shipping directly to your destination. Returns are free as well. Kits include jackets, pants, goggles, gloves and optional snow boots.

How to Measure a Toddler for a Ski Helmet and Gear

It’s always best to try on sports gear before buying to ensure a proper and comfortable fit. Kit Lender is an excellent opportunity to test before you buy. If you’re ordering a helmet online, reference the manufacturer’s sizing guidelines. In general, helmet fitting is done using a soft measuring tape. You want to measure the circumference of the head just above the ears. The measuring tape should go across their forehead sitting about 1 inch over the eyebrows.

Getting the perfect toddler helmet fit means using adjustable dial sizing so you have a snug, but not too tight, fit. Chin straps should also be snug. Kids’ ski helmets are not something you want to buy larger so “they have room to grow”.

Toddler Snow Accessories to Buy

Other must-have items for younger kids are waterproof mittens or glovesbib snow pants and base layers to keep them warm. Some of our favorite base layers are:

four sets of feet clad in alternating black and tan socks are in front of a wood fire stove
Thermal ski socks keep your feet warm and dry on and off the slopes. Photo credit: Margot Black

Pre-teen helmet fit is similar to toddler tips. Always make sure the helmet is snug but not too tight. Most pre-teen helmets come with adjustable dial sizing to ensure a good fit. After tightening my child’s helmet, I always have them shake their head around for me so I can look for any movement. The helmet should not move away from their head.

Some folks want a dual-purpose helmet that is good for winter sports and biking or skateboarding. In order to ensure safety the bike helmet in question needs to have an ASTM label per the CDC’s ski helmet guidelines.

When choosing additional gear for pre-teens, here are some of our favorites:

Finding the right helmet fit for a teenager is just as important as it is for younger kids. It’s important to wear a helmet that is sized correctly to their head and not borrow or use someone else’s helmet that isn’t their size.

Reference the toddler and pre-teen sections for more information on helmet sizing.

When it comes to additional gear for teens, my older kids like to get gift cards and pick out their own items. However, some of the items that are always good to have are:

Planning Your Trip to Go Skiing With Your Kids

Deciding where you’ll take your first (or next) ski trip is the exciting part! If you’re not sure how much time you’ll spend on the mountain, look for a resort with other nearby entertainment. Booking a local vacation rental gives you full access to a kitchen for meals and snacks. The room to spread out and relax when we’re not hitting the slopes is a huge plus.
