During the day, SeaWorld Orlando delights guests with underwater adventures and adrenaline filled roller coasters. As the sunset sets across the theme park during the spooky season, the shadows hold torrid tales that snarl guests in their grasp. During my recent visit to the 2025 Howl-O-Scream event, havoc was everywhere and I was lucky to escape unscathed.

Adults Only

While daytime offerings are meant to be family-friendly, SeaWorld Orlando’s nighttime experience is for adults. It is more than the frightening aspects to this event. Themes, visuals and even the overall vibe is meant for an older crowd.

From couples looking to scream the night away to friends wanting a spirited night out, SeaWorld Orlando’s Howl-O-Scream offers a little bit of everything. In its fifth year, the creative team amplified the experience with new shows, haunted houses and scarezones.

Look towards the flames and prepare to enter Havoc’s realm, if you dare.

  • When to Go: Howl-O-Scream 2025 runs now through November 1, 2025 on select nights. Doors open at 6:15 and the event begins at 7:00 p.m.
  • What to Do: The event includes five haunted houses, six scare zones, five themed bars, shows and more.
  • Ticket prices vary

I received tickets to attend Howl-O-Scream from SeaWorld Orlando.

SheBuysTravel Tip: Skip the airport stress — Lyft’s On-Time Pickup Promise guarantees your scheduled ride shows up within 10 minutes of your pickup time. If it doesn’t? You’ll get Lyft Cash. You can schedule up to 90 days in advance and even lock in your rate. Use code SBT25 to save 25% off ONE scheduled ride to the airport.

No Where to Hide in These Haunted Houses

Over the years, I have learned to calm my fears in haunted houses. At SeaWorld’s Howl-O-Scream, that concept is tested. The scenes are not necessarily grotesque, but they are intense.

From hanging obstacles to flashing lights, every wicked twist and turn is designed to make me feel disoriented. Not knowing where to look makes that jump scare more intense.

At this year’s event, the returning haunted houses are Water’s Edge Wellness Center and Farm 51. Although the “wellness center” might be a misnomer, the scareactors are amazing. They really get into character. That moment of calm makes the scream even more intense.

The new houses are The Collector’s Curse, Rave Yard and The Widow’s Nest. The Rave Yard is a stunning house. From stepping through the graveyard gate till the music fades, this experience proves haunted can be captivating. This concept would be well served outside the seasonal event.

SheBuysTravel Tip: Opt for the Front of Line Fear Extreme. While wait times are manageable, the majority of the evening should be spent having fun versus standing in line. It is worth the extra cost.

Scarezones Are Not for the Timid

Fake bones on barrel

SeaWorld’s looping path around the water makes its scarezones unavoidable. While there are safe havens along the way, every twist, turn and shadow has a person waiting to pounce. I have learned to never carry my cocktail while walking around the event. One spilled drink is too many.

This year’s scarezones are Ashes Forgotten, Blood Light District, Woodrot Hollow, Trailer Park Tragedy, Cannibal Horror and Echoes in the Glass. The Blood Light District is a returning favorite. These vampires are still thirsty for new partners.

I found the Trailer Park Tragedy area quite entertaining. The scare actors really took their roles seriously and were willing to interact with guests. It was less about causing people to scream versus having a good time at the event.

SheBuysTravel Tip: Don’t want to be scared? SeaWorld sells a special necklace that alerts scare actors to tone down their approach.

Interactive Bars Are the Ultimate Watering Holes

two colorful cocktails

One of the ways that I survive Halloween theme parks events is with a cocktail. At SeaWorld’s Howl-O-Scream, the interactive bars turn a quick stop into a reason to linger. There might be shots and blood bags around the park, but I cannot resist a bar stop.

At this year’s event, there are three interactive bars. They are Scorchline, The Butcher’s Block Tavern, Carnevil, Space Gate 3 and Tormented.

Tormented is a returning favorite and this year it did not disappoint. The bartenders shake a strong cocktail. I recommend ordering the 5 Years of Fear Cocktail. The lemon ginger vodka with tangy Midori is both refreshing and spicy. Plus, the vibrant green color captivates.

For the cocktail fan, each of the interactive bars have a signature sipper. Although I did not do a bar crawl, it would be a great option for a group. Sharing a few beverages throughout the night would be wonderful.

SheBuysTravel Tip: Additional specialty cocktails are served at some of the food marketplaces. Be sure to download the SeaWorld Orlando app for complete details.

Don’t Be Frightened by Terrifically Terrifying Food

Theme park food has become a huge draw. This year, SeaWorld’s culinary team wove its themes into the creative, complex and delicious offerings.

This year’s menu features favorites like a Skull Pretzel, Swiderfries and Nachos. While the standard fare is good, the global cuisine is where SeaWorld chefs’ shine. The Dangerous Pork Egg Rolls served over Pad Thai noodles is a hearty meal with just the right amount of spice.

Even the traditional burger gets an upgrade. Made with bison, the Ripper’s Revenge tastes like a pub burger with its chevre, arugula and vampire blood jam.

Overall, I appreciate that Howl-O-Scream’s food offerings balance familiar dishes with some bold flavors. It might push some people out of their comfort zone, but it is not as daring as previous year’s creepy, crawling protein options.

SheBuysTravel Tip: For couples and groups, it is smart to buy the Tasting Lanyard. The $75 Premium option includes five entrees and two beverages.

Sit a Spell and Watch a Show

When time is limited, some people skip the shows. I built extra time into my night to ensure that I saw the performances.

This year, the shows are Throttle, Hellzapoppin Presents: The Grave Danger Thrill Show, Monster Stomp and Deadly Rhythm. The fan-favorite Monster Stomp is always my choice for  mid-evening experience break. The visuals bring the heat, but the air-conditioned environment is refreshing.

This year, the new Throttle show puts Havoc, the new face of fear, front and center. From the motorcycles revving their engines to the impressive choreography, this high energy event was like a mini-concert. The gigantic flames igniting the night sky served as my beacon to find all the action.

SheBuysTravel Tip: Get to Howl-O-Scream early to enjoy the new Deadly Rhythm show at Scorchline Bar. Those beats are infectious.

If you’ve booked a cruise that stops in Ensenada, Mexico—need not fret. Especially if you’re a first-time cruiser like I was. My mom, sister and I booked the 4-day Catalina and Ensenada Carnival Cruise to ease our way in and figure out if we were “true cruisers.”

Beyond the curated cruise terminal, Ensenada shines brightest when explored with locals. I’ll share how Arturo Ensenada Tours transformed our stop into an authentic day of horseback riding, margaritas and cultural gems—proving the best shore excursions aren’t always booked through the ship.

Disclosure: Arturo Ensenada Tours provided a discounted press rate for this experience. All opinions are my own.

What to Expect

Arturo’s team created a personalized itinerary that skipped tourist traps and delivered authentic moments. From peaceful beaches to bustling markets, we felt safe, welcomed and completely immersed. This is the kind of shore and city excursion where you don’t just visit Ensenada—you experience it.

Best for:

  • Multi-generational families wanting an easy, safe day off the ship
  • Women travelers looking for personalized, immersive experiences
  • Small groups or couples who prefer more private tours

The tour is available year-round. We went in August—despite the summer heat, the coastal breeze kept it very comfortable. La Bufadora, the marine blowhole, is active all day, though tide strength varies.

Getting There/When to Go

Is it safe to get off the cruise ship in Ensenada? Yes—stick to trusted operators like Arturo Tours, and you’ll feel secure the whole time.

Can you walk to downtown Ensenada from the cruise port? Technically yes (about 15–20 min), but Arturo’s meeting point is just 5 minutes away, making it easier.

Why do cruise ships stop in Ensenada, Mexico? It’s a convenient, culturally rich port close to Southern California itineraries.

Is Ensenada a tender port? No—you dock directly at the pier.

What are the best shore excursions or things to do in Ensenada? Beach horseback riding, La Bufadora, the Original Margarita Museum, and local markets top the list.

We visited in August, and it was fantastic—warm weather, ocean breeze and plenty of time to explore without feeling rushed.

Arturo Tours prefers payment in cash so go to an ATM beforehand or they take Zelle!

Note of Thanks

A special thank you to Arturo Tours for such a rich and memorable experience—and for giving us a story we’ll be talking about for years. Arturo was under the weather the day of our tour, but he made sure we could still go, and David became our guide. He was absolutely incredible—knowledgeable, kind and the kind of person who turns a great trip into an unforgettable one!

Pageant of the Masters is a unique blend: theatrical performance and fine art show. Watching the Pageant under a warm Laguna Beach night sky is a quintessential California experience.

In 90‑minutes, we watched live actors recreate iconic works of art by being painted into the art. The performers are beautifully costumed and made up to look exactly like their counterparts in original works. Most of the time I could not find the live human in the art, even with binoculars (bring your own or rent a pair at the venue). A narrator guides you through each “living picture,” while an orchestra sets the mood.

The Theme

The 2025 Pageant takes audiences on a visual road trip through California’s most celebrated art museums. You’ll “visit” legendary institutions like the Getty, LACMA, SFMOMA, and smaller hidden-gem collections, all without leaving your seat. From Gold Rush–era paintings to contemporary West Coast installations, each tableau celebrates the diversity and richness of California’s art heritage.

It’s a feast for the eyes, but go for the artistry, not the plot twists. The storyline changes every year, and after seeing the Pageant three years in a row, I found this one lagged a bit compared to past seasons.  While the living art is as jaw‑dropping as ever, the 2025 storyline about a young woman snapping selfies and a drone “touring” California’s museums, unfolds at a slower pace than some past years.

The Festival of Arts Fine Art Show

Half the fun is exploring the Festival of Arts Fine Art Show. More than 100 local artists showcase paintings, photography, jewelry, ceramics and sculpture, turning the grounds into an open‑air gallery. There are live demonstrations, music and hands‑on workshops that even my 29‑year‑old son couldn’t resist.

One of our favorite parts of the show is the walls of award winning artwork created by kids from kindergarten through 12th grade.

Local Artist Participation

While the primary focus of the Pageant of the Masters is on the reenactment of artworks, local artists may be involved as actors, costume and makeup designers, set designers, prop creation, artistic direction and exhibition.  A pageant of this scale takes a village.

Tips for the Best Pageant of the Masters Experience

  • Buy your pageant tickets early. This Laguna art show is a popular event and tickets sell out quickly. Check Groupon for special pricing. If you plan to go to the art shows in Laguna, buy a Passport to the Arts ticket for $29 that provides access to all 3 shows plus free parking.
  • Be prepared for any weather. This annual event, held in an outdoor amphitheater, is performed rain or shine, so check the forecast before you go and tuck a rain poncho into your purse.
  • Dress comfortably. Because the show is held outdoors, it gets cool at night.  Bring a jacket and a blanket. Blankets are available for purchase.
  • Rent or bring binoculars and seat cushions. We had great seats, but it’s fun to see the amazing detail in each piece of living art. Plus with binoculars, you worry less about where you sit. I rented binoculars for Act 2 and what a difference!
  • Bring the kids. The Pageant is family-friendly. Kids 4+ are welcome.
  • Arrive early. There is a lot to see! The junior art exhibit is fantastic, featuring artists from grades 1-12. The showroom inside is packed full of all kinds of art.  There are interactive art activities like stenciling, painting and more.
  • Take the trolley. Don’t stress over parking. Laguna offers free trolley service to get you to the Pageant.
  • Bring your own food and drinks. Personal snacks and beverages are allowed (coolers, picnic baskets or any other containers should be no larger than 14”x14”x14”). You can bring your own alcohol if you’re age 21 or older. Glass bottles and containers are not allowed.
  • Food and Drinks are sold there. Terra, Intermission, and the Wine Bar on the Festival of Arts grounds sell food, alcohol, snacks and drinks. Concessions offer chicken Caesars salad, turkey or chicken sandwich, burgers and a charcuterie board. Terra has a full outdoor dining menu.
  • Dining at Terra before the Pageant of the Masters show elevates the entire evening. Instead of hauling bags of food and rushing to eat at our seats, my daughter and I enjoyed a leisurely meal surrounded by the natural beauty of the Irvine Bowl. Terra’s California cuisine and atmosphere is a relaxing prelude to the artistry ahead. My daughter and I started with an elderflower martini that although was on the sweet side, tasted refreshing on a summer night followed by a deliciously crisp wedge salad and seared Scottish salmon. Unfortunately, a hanger steak was substituted for the Wagyu steak on the menu and it was tough and not a recommend. Note: Make a reservation. Walk-ins are welcome but a table is not guaranteed.

SheBuysTravel Tip: Go past the first bar to the concession stands for reasonably priced snacks and drinks.

Pageant of the Masters Details

  • Accessible seating areas are available.
  • The show starts promptly at 8:30pm, so you’ll want to give yourself plenty of time to find your seats and get settled in.
  • Intermission is 15 minutes.
  • There are a number of restrooms located throughout the amphitheater.
  • No photography or audio/video recording of any kind is permitted during the Pageant.
  • Performances are nightly through August 29, 2025.

Getting There

The Irvine Bowl is located at 650 Laguna Canyon Rd, Laguna Beach, CA 92651.

There is a parking lot located next to the amphitheater, but it can fill up quickly. If you’re planning on driving, I recommend arriving early to secure a spot. Free trolleys are available to shuttle people to downtown Laguna and to distant parking lots.

Laguna Beach is 50 miles (1-1.5 hours) from Los Angeles, 85 miles (1.5-2 hours) from San Diego and 400 miles from San Francisco (6-7 hours).

If you aren’t driving, there are several transportation options depending on your starting location and preferences:

  • By Air: The closest major airport is John Wayne Airport (SNA) Santa Ana in Orange County.  From there, it’s about a 15-mile ride via car rental, taxi, ride-share service or shuttle.
  • By Train: You can take Amtrak and Metrolink to the nearby cities of Irvine or Anaheim and then take a cab or ride-share to Irvine Bowl.
  • By Bus: Various bus services operate within California, such as Greyhound and Megabus, which can take you to nearby cities like Santa Ana or Irvine. From there, you can take a cab or ride-share to the Pageant.

I enjoy traveling, but I don’t always enjoy planning every detail of a trip. Although learning about a new destination is exciting, choosing a restaurant for every meal, picking hotels, and figuring out how to get from place to place can be trying. As a busy working Mom, I just don’t have the time. To ensure my family had a great trip to my dream destination of Jordan without spending weeks planning, I booked a small group family tour.

Why Intrepid?

Here’s why I chose Intrepid Travel:

  • Family-Focused Tours: They offer tours specifically designed for families.
  • Small Group Sizes: Intrepid runs all small group trips, usually with no more than 15 people. This was important to me because I wanted to get personalized attention from our guide
  • Local Guides: Because Intrepid uses local guides, I knew I wouldn’t have to worry about language barriers or difficulty navigating a different culture.
  • Experience: They’ve been in business for 35 years, so I figured they must be doing something right!

Let us inspire your travels! Sign up for our newsletter now.

The Booking Process

Booking the trip was super easy! The only thing I was on my own for was packing!

Here’s how it went:

  • Almost everything was handled: Intrepid took care of nearly every detail.
  • Bucket list destinations secured: All plans to see my bucket list destinations, including Petra, the Dead Sea, the Red Sea, and Wadi Rum were all taken care of for me.
  • Pre-tour arrangements made: Intrepid booked a hotel room for the night before the tour and even a taxi from the airport.
  • Flights were my choice: I booked my own flights using miles, but Intrepid could have helped if I’d wanted them to.

How Our Tour Guide Helped Us Get to Know Our Fellow Travelers

A selection of Jordanian foods, including tomato salads and eggplant dips in white bowls.

Our guide, Mohammad, was fantastic at making everything smooth!

  • Quick Introductions: He made sure all the families on the tour got to know each other right away.
  • Family Meeting Kick-off: He kicked off our tour with a family meeting, where we introduced ourselves, reviewed the week’s itinerary, and answered questions.
  • Cultural Immersion and Bonding: After the meeting, we enjoyed a traditional Jordanian meal, learning about the local food, culture, and customs, which also helped the kids and adults get to know each other better.
  • Putting Everyone at Ease: Although I was initially uneasy about spending a week with complete strangers, Mohammad did a great job of putting everyone at ease right away.

Why the Activity Mix Worked

My tour was perfectly planned for families!

  • Diverse Activities: There was a great mix of historical sites, outdoor adventures, and hands-on cultural events.
  • Kid-Friendly Fun: My kids especially loved all the hikes and sliding down sand dunes.
  • Balanced Days: Intrepid did a fantastic job ensuring both kids and adults had a blast without over-scheduling our days. This was super important for my family since my kids needed some unscheduled downtime every day.
  • Comfortable Travel: We used a comfortable mini-bus and never drove more than a few hours at a time, which was great.

How the Tour Provided Flexibility

When I travel, I like to explore and change plans spur of the moment. I was worried that a planned tour wouldn’t offer enough time for spontaneity, but Intrepid proved me wrong!

  • Ample Free Time: There was plenty of flexibility built into the tour.
  • Time for What You Want: While one family opted for card games during unscheduled times, my family used it to find even more activities.
  • Unexpected Adventures: We managed to squeeze in a sunrise camel ride in the Wadi Rum desert and snorkeled in the Red Sea, even though these weren’t on the original itinerary.
  • Guide’s Support: Our guide was a huge help, assisting us every step of the way with our last-minute additions!

Why Traveling with Other Families Was Good

When the trip started, I wasn’t sure what it would be like to travel with other families. However, the other families wound up being a highlight of our trip.

  • Help with Childcare: Once, when I wanted to go on a long hike, my daughter was able to stay behind with another family.
  • Adult Company: Although I love my family, I appreciated having other adults to talk to. My kids also liked having other kids to play with.
  • Kid Connections: My kids loved having other children to play with, too!
  • Respect for Space: Sometimes, my family wanted to be on our own. When that happened, no one was offended, and the other families gave us space.

Was Using Intrepid Worth It?

Absolutely! While the group tour wasn’t exactly what I’d have planned myself, the trade-offs were well worth it.

  • Comprehensive Coverage with Flexibility: Intrepid ensured my family covered all the significant sites in Jordan while leaving us with enough flexibility to book other activities that weren’t included in the tour.
  • Invaluable Guide: Having a guide who was super knowledgeable and always available, and who took care of every single detail, was invaluable.
  • Deeper Experience: Our guide really added so much depth to our experience. He allowed us to see and learn more than we could have on our own.
  • Repeat Customer: I had such a great time that I planned another Intrepid family tour – to Japan!

If you’re like me, the last thing you want to do before a trip is give up your skincare or makeup routine just because you’re not at home. Let’s be honest—traveling often means sacrificing your favorite products because not everything is easy (or even possible) to squeeze into those tiny refillable bottles.

That’s why I love finding my go-to, high-quality beauty products in mini sizes, so I never have to compromise my routine just because I’m packing light.

I’m obsessed with Ulta’s travel minis section, and right now it’s even better; Ulta is running a Buy One Get One Free sale on select mini products.

10 Travel-Size Beauty Favorites I Always Pack

These are the travel-friendly products I never leave home without. Each one has earned a spot in my carry-on, from skincare to makeup to hair care. These are the SheBuysTravel-approved must-haves.

1. TULA The Cult Classic Purifying Face Cleanser

I never board a flight without this face cleanser. Travel (especially flying) is tough on skin, but this gentle gel cleanser removes dirt, makeup, and sunscreen without drying me out. I’ve worked hard to build a consistent skincare routine, and I’m not giving that up when I travel.

Why I love it:

  • Balances skin (no post-flight oil slicks or dry patches)
  • TSA-approved 1 oz size
  • Smells fresh but subtle
  • I own the full travel set, and it’s worth it!

2. Clinique Moisture Surge 100H Auto-Replenishing Hydrator

This moisturizer is my airplane skin savior. It locks in hydration (even in recycled cabin air…gross) and works for all skin types.

Why it’s in my bag:

  • Keeps skin plump and fresh while traveling
  • Won’t clog pores (huge bonus for me)
  • Mini size lasts longer than you’d think

3. Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen SPF 40 Mini

Sun protection is non-negotiable for me, but sticky sunscreen? No thanks. This one is invisible, weightless, and works as a makeup primer. I’ve been using it for a while now and it’s my personal go-to pick.

Travel-friendly perks:

  • No white residue (even on deeper skin tones)
  • TSA-friendly size
  • Works under foundation

4. IT Cosmetics CC+ Cream Mini

Whether I’m running to catch a flight or heading out for dinner in a new city, this CC+ cream evens out my skin without feeling heavy. I’ve always felt more comfortable with a CC cream that adds full coverage without feeling cakey or like I have heavy amounts of makeup on my face.

Why I pack it:

  • Full coverage but natural finish
  • SPF 50 built-in
  • Saves space by replacing multiple products

5. Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara Mini

Mascara is the one thing that instantly makes me feel put together. This one is my go-to for volume and curl, no lash curler needed. I never leave the house without mascara on, so I’ve tested plenty of brands, and this one is THE ONE for me.

Why it’s worth it:

  • Doesn’t smudge
  • Dramatic lashes in one swipe
  • Tiny but mighty

6. Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Dry Shampoo Mini

When I’m skipping the hotel shampoo (which is…always), this dry shampoo saves me. It actually cleans my hair, not just perfumes it. I don’t always have the luxury of a hot shower on long travel days to help me feel refreshed, so I keep this tiny best friend with me at all times.

Why I love it for travel:

  • Absorbs oil without buildup
  • Refreshes hair post-flight
  • Perfect size for a weekend trip

7. Olaplex No. 4 and No. 5 Minis

If you color your hair like I do, you already know, Olaplex is the holy grail. These mini bottles keep my hair healthy and I’m always getting compliments on how soft my hair feels. The shampoo and conditioner are both fantastic!

Why you’ll love them:

  • Repairs and protects
  • Saves your blowout
  • Small size, big results

8. Clinique Take The Day Off Cleansing Balm Mini

Waterproof mascara, long-wear lipstick, you name it, this balm melts it off gently. No tugging or scrubbing. I’ve been using Clinique products for more than 20 years and this is one of my favorites.

Why I take it everywhere:

  • Travel-safe solid formula
  • Won’t spill in your bag
  • Works for sensitive skin

This blush and bronzer stick is my new favorite way to add some life back to my face after a long flight or day out exploring. It’s compact, creamy and super easy to apply on the go. The duo stick means I don’t have to pack multiple products to get that sun-kissed look.

Why I love it:

  • Blush and bronzer in one stick
  • Blendable and buildable for a natural glow
  • Perfect size for travel (no brushes required)

Shop the mini here →

10. Tarte Maracuja Juicy Lip Balm Mini

I end every makeup routine with this lip balm. It’s the perfect mix of color and hydration – no cracked lips, and no need to pack extra lipstick. I have to keep my lips hydrated or I start to pick at them unintentionally so I use this lip balm obsessively.

Why I love it:

  • Adds a natural glossy tint
  • Ultra-hydrating (no chapped lips mid-flight)
  • Easy to swipe on, no mirror needed

Shop the mini here →

Minis are Not Just for Travel

Even if you’re not planning an upcoming trip, this BOGO mini sale is the perfect way to try new products without committing to the full-size price tag. I love using Ulta’s travel section as a way to test high-end products before I invest in the larger version. It’s like building your beauty wishlist, but smarter.

Why I Shop Ulta (Not Amazon) for Travel Minis

I know it’s tempting to grab travel-size products from random online marketplaces, but here’s why I always choose Ulta:

  • BOGO sales like this one cut the price in half.
  • Ulta’s points program actually gives me money back. I use the app to track my points, and I’ve redeemed them for free products more than once!
  • Ulta carries my favorite high-end brands, but with promotions that keep the price way below what I’d pay elsewhere.
  • I trust the quality. No worrying about knock-offs or expired products when I shop at Ulta.

When I landed the plum assignment to cover dude ranches in the American West, I was thrilled to live out a childhood dream. I always wanted a horse, but that didn’t fit our family’s budget.

This year, I will ride horses, rope cattle, groom horses in the stables, practice archery, and shoot guns.

First, I needed the right dude ranch wardrobe—ranch life requires more than jeans, a hat and boots. It starts with the underwear, but let’s work from the outside in by learning what to pack for a dude ranch trip.

Kay El Bar Guest Ranch hosted me. All opinions expressed are entirely my own.

What is a Dude Ranch

Dude ranches offer guests ranch life, including horseback riding, cattle work, hiking and outdoor sports. I experienced my first at Kay El Bar Guest Ranch in Wickenburg, Arizona and loved it.

As a first-timer, I needed the right gear and someone to help me understand how to choose it.

Wickenburg’s western-wear shops supplied the specialized wardrobe and Bridget Brussels, Marketing Manager of True Ranch Collection taught me what to look for when outfitting for my cowgirl adventure.

In addition to a downloadable Dude Ranch Packing List, here is advice about choosing your Dude Ranch essentials.

Let us inspire your travels! Sign up for our newsletter now.

Clothing Appropriate for a Dude Ranch Vacation

True Ranch Collection, my guest ranch host, provides a standard packing list for each property on its websites.

Bridget Brussels, Marketing & Social Media Manager of True Ranch Services, shared valuable information about clothing and gear required for a dude ranch vacation.

Wear casual ranch clothing on a dude ranch, as the dress code follows a relaxed style. We didn’t dress for dinner or evening entertainment at Kay El Bar Guest Ranch.

You can find the standard packing list for True Ranch Collection ranches on their website’s FAQs.The standards vary slightly based on each ranch’s different activities. Be prepared with this rundown.

Essentials With a Twist

Blue jeans combine utility, comfort, and authenticity—exactly what dude ranch life calls for. Jeans handle wear and tear far better than most fabrics. Leggings and stretch pants don’t protect your legs well enough on the trail.

Instead of traditional underwear with a center seam, consider wearing boy shorts designed with a gusset in the crotch. A gusset offers a smooth, reinforced panel that replaces the typical seam, which significantly reduces friction in sensitive areas.

Boy shorts with a gusset also tend to stay in place better, providing full coverage and minimizing bunching or riding up under your jeans. This type of underwear offers breathability and support and stretches with your movement.

The Best Footwear for a Dude Ranch Vacation

Consider the following as the best footwear options for a dude ranch vacation:

  • Cowgirl boots for horseback riding
  • Hiking boots for hiking, archery, sport shooting, and other outdoor adventures
  • Casual shoes or sneakers for sitting around the campfire or less formal events
  • Water shoes for rafting or kayaking
  • Sandals if there is a pool or spa at the ranch

Special Gear for Horseback Riding at a Dude Ranch

Horseback riding at a dude ranch requires two essential items: cowgirl boots and a hat or helmet.

Bridget said, “Cowboy boots and hats can be a bit of a wormhole. Quality and uses for them range from fashion to horse showing to ranch work with tons of different shapes and styles (shapes of the crown and brim of hats, and toe styles–snip, square, round–and shaft heights in boots).”

Cowgirl Boots

Julie's cayman and leather cowboy boots.

Cowgirl boots are specifically designed for safety and comfort when riding horses. Here’s why:

  • Heel Design: Cowgirl boots have a distinct heel, usually about one to two inches high, which helps prevent your foot from slipping through the stirrup and reduces the risk of your foot getting caught if you fall.
  • Smooth Sole: They have smooth, leather soles that slide easily from stirrups if needed. Hiking boots or shoes with rubber or textured soles might grip the stirrup too tightly, causing your foot to get stuck.
  • Protection: Cowgirl boots typically cover your ankles and part of your calf, protecting your feet and lower legs from rubbing against the saddle or being injured by brush, branches, or stirrup leathers. After several brushes with rocks and cactus, I’m a believer.
  • Comfort in the Saddle: Cowgirl boots’ pointed or rounded toe design fits comfortably into stirrups, offering better control and balance while riding.

Bridget said, “For cowgirl boots, it comes down to the question of usage and price point. For boots that you want to use for riding and that will hold up in varied weather conditions, you might consider some with a rubber/synthetic sole.

Many different brands offer more of a fashion boot! These might have a slightly higher heel and a leather sole. If you want some, you might continue to wear them in your everyday life, and these might make a good choice.”

Boot Sizes

Bridget gave this advice about boot sizes. “Boots tend to run a little bit big—especially in high-end brands. You might find yourself sizing a half to a whole size down, so it is a good idea to try some on in person. For a dude ranch trip, function matters more than appearance so find a style you like the look of and try them on!”

I took Bridget’s advice when I shopped for boots. I’m difficult to fit because my feet are small and my calves are muscular. Children’s tall boots fit my calves but were too big for my feet. I settled for cowkid boots, which cost under $100.

By the second day on horseback, I confirmed the tall leather boots protected my shins from rubbing on the saddle and stirrups.

She Buys Travel Tip:  Ask if the guest ranch has boots and hats to borrow for your ride. Surprisingly, you can borrow boots and hats  at dude ranches.

Cowgirl Hats Suitable for a Dude Ranch Vacation

Straw cowboy hat.

“Cowgirl hats reflect personal preference,” Bridget stated. “You can find relatively inexpensive straw and felt hats; or high-end versions of them.”

“In a higher-end felt or straw, hat sizing depends on your head circumference and should fit snugly.

Any hatter will be able to assist with fit and potentially shaping depending on your purchase.”

When I shopped for hats, I learned that hat fitters (hatters) shape hats to your head and your preferred style. Remember Hoss Cartwright from Bonanza? He wore an unshaped hat with a round crown.

True Ranch Collection requires a stampede string to secure your hat if it falls off while riding. The stampede string slides into the brim with a clip or inside the tag. The string comes out easily without damaging the hat.

Dressing for Different Activities at a Dude Ranch

  • A cowgirl hat or helmet
  • Gloves

LaceUp Athletic’s weighted compression sleeves are my newest must pack item. I’ve always relied on compression products for flights and road trips, convinced that they help reduce jet lag and boost my energy when I arrive.

That’s likely because compression sleeves gently squeeze your arm so blood flows back to your heart more easily, reducing swelling and keeping your circulation healthy. But LaceUp Sleeves take it further: their gentle, balanced weights provide subtle toning, and thanks to a partnership with LYCRA®, the silky-soft fabric is comfortable enough to wear all day. Unlike my old compression gear that felt tight and uncomfortable by day’s end, LaceUp Sleeves have just the right amount of stretch—and I like the colors that are offered.

Want more travel fashion and gear recommendations? Get tips and deals with our newsletter!

What Makes LaceUps Different?

LaceUp Sleeves combine the best of both worlds: gentle compression and calming weight. They’re the first wearable compression sleeves designed to be worn on the move, offering sensory support that feels like a subtle grounding tool.

  • Weighted Evenly: The weights are light and spaced evenly around the sleeve.
  • Compression that Supports, Not Squeezes: The sleeves provide gentle compression to improve circulation and reduce muscle fatigue.
  • Made with LYCRA® for Soft Stretch and Comfort: The partnership with LYCRA® means the material is silky-soft, breathable, and stretchy. No digging, pinching, or sliding down.
  • Travel-Ready Design: Slim enough to wear under clothes or with your everyday airport outfit. They don’t scream “medical wear”—they look sleek and intentional.

The Science-Backed Benefits of Compression Sleeves

Even without the weight, compression sleeves have some serious travel perks:

  • Improved blood flow during long periods of sitting (bye-bye, swollen ankles).  The compression helps keep blood flowing by forcing blood to return to the heart.
  • Reduced muscle fatigue and faster recovery—great if you’re walking 10,000+ steps a day sightseeing.
  • Enhanced proprioception, aka body awareness, which helps with coordination and stability.

Dr. Mikjail Serruya, MD, PhD, Assistant Professor, Department of Neurology at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, PA, says, “”Compression therapy has well-established medical benefits for blood flow and tissue oxygenation that may help address concerns related to prolonged sitting during travel, though effectiveness depends on proper fit, appropriate compression levels, and individual health factors, so anyone considering compression garments should seek guidance from a healthcare professional familiar with their medical history.”

LaceUp Sleeves go a step further. By adding subtle, evenly distributed weight, they provide deep pressure stimulation—a sensory input that’s been shown to reduce anxiety, regulate the nervous system, and create a sense of calm.

Who Benefits from Weighted Compression Sleeves?

  • Everyday travelers – That’s most of us! Perfect for long flights or road trips where you’re sitting still for too long.
  • MS, Parkinson’s and tremors – The weight and compression may help reduce involuntary movements and support muscle control.
  • Anxiety – Especially in overstimulating environments like airports, hotels, or conferences.
  • ADHD and sensory sensitivity – They offer non-pharmaceutical calming input without drawing attention. The pressure applied by the sleeves can activate the parasympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for a calming response
  • Workout recovery:  An NIH 2025 study concluded that compression products “significantly mitigated muscle strength decline following exercise-induced muscle fatigue”

When I Use Them

  • At the airport: Compression products are part of my standard airport outfit now.
  • On the plane: I wear compression products during long flights—they are comfortable and help reduce swelling.
  • Walks: The weighted sleeves add a little boost to my fitness walks and give me the circulation benefits of compression.  Wearing the sleeves on a full day of sightseeing provides relief for tired calves and ankles.
  • In the car: Whenever I have a car ride that exceeds one hour, I slip on the LaceUp Sleeves.  Why not?  I want improved energy upon arrival.

Want to know the secret to packing for a luxury cruise? You need key wardrobe pieces and beauty items that elevate your look from your comfy everyday. You’ll feel extra special on your dream vacation, creating memories you’ll cherish for a lifetime.

It’s a challenge, especially if you’re like me and your closet isn’t full of designer dresses and special occasion gowns. For my first Danube River cruise, I stared at my empty suitcase for weeks, wondering what to bring for busy touring days and candlelight dinners.

Chic Trade for a Tee Dress

Vanner House navy equestrian dress
Details like sash belts make dresses from Vanner House style knockouts.

An equestrian-inspired floral print linen midi dress from Vanner House is a high-end swap for your basic black knit t-shirt dress. You can wear it day and night. Pair it with sandals and shades for a café lunch. Dress it up for dinner with a glam bracelet stack.

European-Inspired Swap for a Suit Set

Trendy two-piece Parisian pants set by Elegance Miss.
Replace your old little black dress with a trendy two-piece Parisian pants set by Elegance Miss.

Trade your favorite matching jacket and pants for an upscale two-piece combo in classic black. The sophisticated flare-legged pants and wrap-style jacket from Elegance Miss feature a breathable, forgiving fabric. You can easily change the look with different necklaces. Outfits that work more than once are the key to packing success, I’ve discovered.

Replace Knits with Luxe Linen

Cali 1850 printed linen pull-on pants
Keep your knits for knocking about at home. Linen from Cali1850 offers an upscale, breezy style, perfect for a luxury cruise.

For basics to replace your favorite knit tees and sweats, go with washable linen separates from Cali 1850. The Malibu laid-back look works perfectly when cruising the Med. Even on the hottest days, breathable linen helps you stay cool.

Cali 1850 white crinkle gauze button down shirt
Crinkle gauze from Cali1850 breathes and doesn’t wrinkle. What more could you ask for in a fabric?

The brand’s pull-on linen pants come in 15 different print options. Pair any of them with their relaxed, crinkle gauze button-down for a coastal-chic outfit that will feel fabulous all day.

Leave Your Hoodie at Home

A lightweight jacket
Keep a lightweight jacket, like this white one from Crescent, handy. It’s your best defense against aggressive A/C.

We all love our sweatshirts, but a classic, contemporary blazer is what you need on a luxury cruise vacation. Choose a neutral option from Crescent to get the most flexibility out of this wardrobe basic. It’s an effortless way to elevate your look. Put your own style spin on this classic, minimalist design.

Water, Water Everywhere

La Blanca swimsuit
Glam it up by the pool with a down-to-there neckline on this La Blanca swimsuit.

Having a collection of beachwear is the key to your luxury cruise. Depending on your trip, you’ll need options for pool, beach and boat. I like to pack a one-piece in a solid neutral as my go-to suit. Flattering swimsuits from La Blanca fit like a dream and have glam details like dramatic plunging necklines.

Hot Pink two-piece bathing suit from WET
Perfect for posing, pink swimsuits, such as the Azura style from WET Swim, offer styles that are fun, flirty and fab.

The removable cups in WET Swimwear swimsuits help you get the fit right for you. Mix and match their swim separates in bold colors like poppy red, tangerine and lipstick pink.

Maxine of Hollywood black buttondown coverup
A neutral or black coverup, like this one from Maxine of Hollywood, works with all colors and styles of bathing suits.

Pack at least two cover-ups. An oversized button-down from Maxine of Hollywood in basic black will work with almost every bathing suit. It works as a wardrobe piece too – pair it with white jeans for a classic combo.

A dazzling smile is the perfect accessory. Be sure to pack Davids Toothpaste. The good-for-you ingredients deliver superior whitening results. And they’re available in travel-sized tubes that meet TSA carry-on regulations.

The Little Extras

Davids natural toothpaste
Davids toothpaste formulations come in handy travel sizes for on-the-go freshness.

Special touches are needed to complete your luxury cruise looks. A pair (or two!) of movie star sunglasses offer glam and eye protection. Brighton features an extensive selection of styles, from classic aviators to retro oval shapes featuring silver-plated accents.

Brighton sunglasses with tortoiseshell and silver accent
Brighton sunglasses give sun protection and feature metallic accents, available at Vickie’s Gifts.

I don’t routinely wear jewelry, but I always pack necklaces, bracelets and earrings when I’m packing for a special cruise. Every outfit deserves a little sparkle. Everyone’s taste in jewelry is different, but we all need a way to pack it safely. The ideal jewelry travel case will have numerous compartments to keep everything organized and untangled.

Spartina jewelry organizer
Tangle no more! Necklaces stay put when you pack a Spartina organizer from Beach House Gift Boutique.

Don’t Leave Home Without It

Don’t get caught posing poolside at golden hour with a dead phone. Even in the most luxurious ship cabins, there are never enough outlets. A multi-port travel charger goes with me everywhere. The HyperJuice 100W USB-C GaN Charger has 4 ports for all your devices.

HyperJuice 4-port travel charger
A dead device is a vacation buzz kill. A multi-port charger keeps everything powered up and ready to go.

Repeat after me: River cruises are not the same as ocean cruises when it comes to fashion. I learned this lesson after my first Viking vacation, sailing the Danube. I chose outfits for that trip based on my prior cruises aboard Norwegian and Princess, but quickly learned I’d committed two cardinal packing sins:

  1. I brought too much.
  2. I didn’t bring what I needed.

I’m a river cruise packing pro now, having cruised the Nile and Burgundy’s canals. Learn from my mistakes. Here are tips for packing a smart and stylish river cruise wardrobe.

Ready to explore the world? We can help.

Ocean vs River Cruise: What’s the Fashion Difference?

Think of your river cruise boat as a floating hotel where you relax at the end of busy touring days. This differs greatly from ocean cruise ships that offer 24/7 entertainment, dining and activities. I know many cruise lovers who never visit a port. For them, the cruise ship is the vacation destination.

Onboard a river cruise, there are no formal dinners, nightclubs or shows that require special occasion dresses. There are usually no fitness centers or pools. And you’ll be touring a lot on a river cruise. Comfy shoes and day outfits are essential to stay fresh.

What to Bring on a River Cruise

Coastal chic linen pants from Cali1850 come in a variety of patterns to match your wardrobe palette.

The good news is that it’s much easier to pack for a river cruise if you avoid overthinking and packing a lot of “just in case” items. For my Egyptian river cruise, I debated packing a second bathing suit for days until I reminded myself that I was the only person who dipped into the Viking hot tub, and I did so exactly once.

Outfit Essentials for Busy Excursion Days

Blond woman wearing a boho Umgee charcoal gray blouse.
Navy is an underrated neutral, IMO. This and other relaxed Umgee tops work on their own or paired with a tank top. Knot it up for one outfit, then wear it a third time with a scarf.

Pricing for river cruises routinely includes multiple daily excursions. I didn’t skip one on any of my cruises. The days were long, busy and wonderful. You’ll want comfortable outfits in breathable fabrics. And don’t forget layering separates to add and subtract as the temperature changes.

Consider packing the following for touring days on a river cruise:

Closeup of a chestnut colored leather crossbody bag with brushed gold accents
A leather cross-body with equestrian style from Vanner House is a secure and stylish option when touring.

You’re Only as Happy as Your Toes

Expect to log thousands of steps on a river cruise, possibly 20k or more. You’ll want comfortable walking shoes or sandals unless you want to be limping by Day Three. I favor Brooks running shoes or Teva sandals. They’re lightweight, supportive and come in enough color and style options so you can find one that’s cute enough.

After Dark on a River Cruise

Pair this one-size-fits-most silk caftan from Vanner House with metallic flats for an easy, breezy evening look.

It’s super quiet when the sun goes down on a river cruise. Groups gather in the ship lounge for cocktails and conversation. Often, there’s a casual lecture about the next day’s sights. There might be entertainment, but it’s low-key, not a Broadway-style production like you’d find on an ocean cruise.

Dress for your river nights like you’re going out to a restaurant dinner on a Saturday with your best friends. Casual chic is the best way for me to describe the look, and here are the key elements:

  • Versatile dresses, dressy tops + trousers, jumpsuits.
  • Lightweight accessories like scarves and jewelry for color and sparkle.
  • One neutral sweater or light jacket for cooler evenings on deck.

Change your necklace and you can wear this black knit midi dress from Elegance Miss at least twice… but trade the heels for ballet flats for added comfort.

Be Prepared for Weather

A lightweight stretch denim jacket with silk print accents from Vanner House is the ideal topper for cool cruise nights.

Sunscreen is your skin’s best friend. Pack one that smells great, so reapplying is a treat, not a chore. Your hat and sunglasses will feature prominently in your photos. Be sure to choose ones that make you feel great. You’ll project that confidence in your pics.

Other weather-ready items to pack include:

  • Quick-dry layers or packable jackets for rainy stops.
  • Activewear for biking or hiking excursions.
  • Bathing suit and swimsuit cover-up for a hot tub dip.

About that hot tub…if you choose to soak, you’ll likely be climbing into the tub in full view of your fellow passengers. I felt comfortable in a modest one-piece. And I was happy to have a cover-up to toss on for lounging on the deck.

Additional River Cruise Packing Tips

  • Restrict your wardrobe color palette for mix-and-match outfit options.
  • Use packing cubes. On cruises, I remove them from my suitcase and put them in the stateroom dresser, so unpacking takes just a few minutes.
  • A travel steamer or wrinkle-release spray works wonders to freshen your clothes so you can get the most wear out of them.
  • A power adapter is essential for cruising abroad.

Because you don’t need multiple special occasion outfits, swimsuits and shoes, it’s quite possible to pack for your river cruise in a carry-on. However, if I’ve leveraged a free checked bag by using my airline credit card or upgraded my seat with points, I’ll bring a bigger bag. The extra room means I never have to say no to a souvenir.

Just because you’re Team Carryon doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice style. We walk you through packing light fashion so you look (and feel) stunning. With the right strategy and versatile pieces, you can create a chic travel wardrobe that fits into a single suitcase. Whether you’re off for a quick weekend getaway or hitting the road for a summer in Europe, this guide will help you be on the cutting edge of packing light fashion.

Follow these tips to build your perfect capsule wardrobe and enjoy stress-free packing on your next adventure!

Creating a Travel Capsule Wardrobe

When you start looking into packing light fashion the idea of a capsule wardrobe immediately comes up. A great go-to light packing list is based around key pieces that work together to create many outfits. To maximize outfits and get the most bang for your buck here’s how to build a travel capsule wardrobe for packing light.

  • Choose a Color Palette. Pick one or two base shades and two to three accent colors. The key is to avoid oddball colors that will be hard to match with other items. Many people start with a neutral color like black, white, beige, navy, or gray, and then add accent colors. This makes mixing and matching effortless.
  • Look for workhorse pieces that can be used in several ways. Versatile options like jumpsuits, dresses, tailored trousers, wide leg dark jeans, and solid dresses can be dressed up or down making them suitable for multiple occasions.
  • Play with the matches before you pack. Don’t wait until you’re packing to plan outfits. This is the time to start that Pinterest board or list outfits as you’re shopping. Planning outfits in advance ensures every piece serves multiple purposes (and is worn on multiple days).
  • On that same note: Spend a little bit more for those champion items. As you play with those outfit combos you’ll notice a few items that really pull their weight. Invest a little more in those pieces that will be worn in heavy rotation.

Our Top Two Pack-Light Picks: Splurges That Travel Well

Packing light and perfecting that travel capsule wardrobe is easier when you start with clothing that delivers. These versatile items are stylish and functional and we’re always going to make sure they are packed first!

Elegance Miss’s Parisian Dresses

These are the dresses you spin in slow-mo with romantic music and a stunning travel backdrop. I’m always willing to spend a little more for a good quality day-to-night dress. Plus there’s something really satisfying about being able to say, “Thanks. It’s from Paris,” when someone compliments you.

The Parisian dresses by Elegance Miss feature lightweight wrinkle-free fabrics that are easy to pack. Pair them with a pair of flats during the day or pop on a pair of heels at night for instant chic.

Options include various hem lengths from above knee to maxi (and everything in between) and a variety of sleeve styles. Personally I’m a sucker for the Ophelie and Kayz which are collared long sleeve styles with pockets. They scream elegance and sophistication. Versatile options are endless, including great black and navy midi dress styles.

La’ Agra’s Blossom Collection

As an ethical collection from a South Asian female designer we’re already rooting for La’ Agra. Billed as modern artisanal fashion, their Blossom Collection and its statement floral-inspired pieces are the perfect accents to any travel capsule wardrobe.

Several items in this collection stand out for their day-to-night versatility. The Dahlia Floral Strap top or The Petal Top would pair well with a classic pair of wide leg jeans for daytime art museums and shopping. At night, swap out the jeans for a skirt and heels for drinks and a meal on the waterfront. The back detail on the Dahlia and the lace-look sleeves on the Petal top will perk up any neutral.

Another great option that veers a little more luxe is the Slip Dress. With unique accents that create the visual snatched waist we all love, this dress is a winner. It’s a natural match for heels and an updo or could be dressed down with a jean jacket and some cute boots.

Favorite Essential Clothing Items for Light Packing

This Pretty Garden jumpsuit is pure comfort and cute too! Photo credit: Amazon

Every capsule wardrobe has some basics that really pull their weight. We recommend packing a few of these items in different colors. You can build so many outfits off of these pieces.

Women’s Everyday Jumpsuit

A jumpsuit is a travel wardrobe hero. Not only are they usually made out of lightweight wrinkle-resistant fabric but with so many necklines and color options, everyone is sure to find a favorite. We love these options that are perfect for a day of sightseeing or dinner out.

Cupshe Surplice Neckline Wide-Legged Jumpsuit

This option by Cupshe can be found at Target, Macy’s, and other major stores for around $50. There are multiple neutral colors available including navy, olive, and tan. The v-neck shoulder style and wide legged bottoms accentuate and flatter your waistline. This comfortable option looks cute on pretty much everyone.

Pretty Garden Summer Sleeveless Tank Jumpsuit

Pretty Garden is a go-to on Amazon for standard, comfortable options that are available in numerous colors. Their sleeveless tank jumpsuit is more casual and the perfect option for summer vacations and beach time.

Anrabess Sleeveless Women’s Jumpsuit

We love a great sleeveless jumpsuit for evening. This Anrabess Amazon option has a chic back cutout detail and comes in a wide variety of colors. Add a clutch and you’re ready to hit the town.

Tailored Trousers in a Stretchy Knit

A woman stands in front of a black concrete fountain posing in a white tank top and tan, wide-legged dress pants.
These pants from Lillusory are a great mix of style and comfort. Photo credit: Amazon

Stretchy knit trousers are the acceptable sweatpants of the dressy pant world. They are comfortable yet polished, making them perfect for packing light. Many brands make signature styles of these trousers. I’m sure we’ve all been bombarded with Halara ads. With so many options, picking the right one can be tricky. It’s a great opportunity to select a few staples. Picking one classic pair, one special waist detail pair, and one fun color will give you tons of outfit inspiration on the road.

Lillusory Wide Legged Dress Pants

These ones are so comfy that I gave them a pass on having visible elastic at the back waist which is usually a hard pass for me. I just pair them with a belt. If you’re working on the road or need to dress up, these pants are perfect. They look corporate and feel like lounge pants. Plus they don’t wrinkle and come in a ton of colors.

Magellan’s Wrinkle-Free Travel Pants

Magellan’s has made great travel clothing for years. If you’re more of a bootcut gal these are a great option that looks dressy but can be crammed into a suitcase and come out looking freshly pressed.

BTFBM High-Waist Palazzo Pant

These pants look classic but have a reverse pleat detail that adds attention and flair to a simple wardrobe piece. Multiple color options mean that you can pick the right neutral or bold for your wardrobe.

Lepuno Tie Waist Palazzo Pants

I love these as an option for evenings out. They look best paired with a fitted shirt tucked in. The waist tie is elegant and dresses up the entire look.

Wrap or Multi-Configuration Travel Dresses

A model stands in maroon sleeveless wrap dress. Only the bottom half of her face is showing.
Wrap and go – so easy! Photo credit: Amazon

A good wrap or multi configuration dress is worth its weight in gold. When one dress can single-handedly serve up 10+ different looks it makes packing light a breeze.

Grecian Multi-Configuration Maxi Dress

We love the versatility of this dress. You can twist and position the straps in a myriad of different styles. There are actually more than 24 ways to wear this dress!

This dress offers two looks in one—a space-saving dream!

72 Styles Infinity Dress

This option is often mentioned in wedding articles because of the versatility in both style and body type. It’s a popular bridesmaid dress, but we think this knee-length dress is also a great travel option.

Amazon Essentials Cap Sleeve Wrap Dress

There’s a reason why this dress consistently rates over 4 stars. It’s a classic, it fits well, and it comes in a multitude of colors. I love this as a dress-down option with sandals.

Lightweight Button Up Shirts

A blonde woman with long hair and sunglasses stands with hands in the pockets of white shorts, wearing a light blue button-down collared shirt and carrying a white handbag over her shoulder.
Stylish and comfy on the go with this siliteelon linen blouse. Photo credit: Amazon

Linen and linen blends are breathable and stylish. It’s a great second layer for warmer climates. Paired with shorts or pants, you can look effortlessly chic with the right button up.

Short Sleeved V-Neck Linen Button Up

This stylish short sleeved button up is perfect to throw on with trousers or wear more casually over jean shorts.

Minibee Hi-Lo Roll Up Sleeve Shirt

This linen cotton blend is stylishly oversized. It can go from beach coverup to casual top to nighttime option.

AStylish Women’s Roll-Up Sleeve Button Up

This option is a linen-look shirt. It isn’t actually linen but is lightweight, doesn’t wrinkle, and comes in more than 30 colors.

Merino Wool Options

Woman with long brown hair poses with one hand in her jeans pocket, wearing a gray t-shirt.
A wool base layer can also be worn just as a cute, comfy tee. Photo credit: Amazon

Merino wool is lightweight, odor-resistant, and wrinkle-free. It may seem counterintuitive to choose wool on warmer vacations but it breathes and can be layered in colder climates. Options have become higher quality and more abundant over the years.

Manote 100% Merino Wool Maxi Dress with Spaghetti Straps

Let’s face it, sometimes we need to embrace our youth and throw back to the spaghetti strap dress. It goes with everything. This black merino wool option is the perfect chameleon of the travel capsule. Wear it solo or with an oversized blazer or shrug.

Adeptwool Women’s Merino Wool Swing Dress

This long sleeve dress pulls on easily, is soft, comes in neutral shades, and hits at the perfect right-above-knee length.

Merinnovation T-Shirt

This base layer t-shirt is cute enough to wear on its own. Not only is it super soft but merino wool is naturally moisture wicking making it ideal for more active days.

Skirts and Shorts

Woman poses in the desert holding a straw tote and wearing a cropped white tee and high-waisted khaki shorts. Only the lower half of her face and long brown hair are visible.
Look chic and stay cool in these shorts from Wihion Women. Photo credit: Amazon

For warmer vacations, shorter stretchy skirts and cute shorts are a packing-light must-have.

Rekucci Stretch Pencil Skirt

Pencil skirts are often looked at as officewear but with some stretch these short skirts are perfect pairings for tanks and button ups. This one is a travel staple in classic black.

Dani’s Choice High Waisted Flare Knee Length Skirt

With 12 color options and pockets (yay!) this skirt swirls and hangs just right. You can layer this with tights and boots in cooler weather or go bare legged with strappy sandals on warmer vacation spots.

Wihion Women’s Bahama Shorts

This structured, sophisticated pair of shorts is the perfect packing-light option. They can go casual or elegant.

Grace Karin Bowknot Tie Casual Shorts

An abundance of colors and the jaunty waist tie make these cute shorts the perfect pairing for fitted tops on your next trip.

Versatile Pieces for a Stylish Travel Wardrobe

Investing in versatile pieces ensures you maximize outfit options while minimizing luggage space. There are some excellent clothing items that can either be utilized in different configurations or even cute sets that can be mixed and matched.

Travel Sets to Mix and Match

Woman with long dark hair and sunglasses stands posing in front of a white wall, chair and low table, holding a cell phone with one hand in her pocket. She is wearing a short-sleeved chunky-knit top and matching pants with drawstring.
You can never go wrong with a matching set like this one from ANRABESS. Photo credit: Amazon

One way to maximize those fashion dollars is to pick a few sets. If you steer towards classic lines and fuss-free shapes, you’ll be able to use the pieces in a ton of different outfits.

Loungewear Tank & Pant Set

This set feels like sweatpants, but pick a darker color and you’d never know. The top on this set can be worn with the jersey wide leg pants or pair the bottoms with a merino t-shirt on a more active day.

Wide Leg Pant and Top Set

We love a matching set that’s simple and elegant. This top-and-bottom set can easily be casual or dressy depending on the color you choose and how you accessorize. The bottoms are flowy and comfortable. These are a great replacement for linen pants because they have the same vibe but won’t wrinkle into a crumpled suitcase casualty. Wear the top under a blazer with some jeans to mix it up.

Anrabess Crochet Sheer Knit Top with Wide Leg Bottoms

This outfit screams European villa. Just add a wide-brimmed sunhat (foldable of course) and cute leather slides. Pick a neutral and match the tank to the sheer top or pick a contrasting color for a bolder look.

Blazers

A women stands on a wooden stairway in the woods, wearing a white shirt and jeans with a long, light-colored jacket. Her hand is in one pocket.
A long jacket helps to finish off your outfit as well as keeping you warm. Photo credit: Amazon

A great blazer can elevate any outfit. Go oversized on more casual vacations or pick something a bit more tailored if you’ll be working.

Cicy Bell Women’s Tailored Blazer

This wardrobe champion deserves a very special shout-out! The polyester/viscose/spandex combo doesn’t wrinkle and it can take an outfit from casual to polished in an instant.

Long Dressy Cardigan Jacket

This long jacket can dress up anything from leggings to trousers to a maxi dress. It’s the perfect option for a comfy layer that elevates any outfit. Its open style means you don’t have to fuss with buttons or coordinating accessory color combinations.

Satin Trimmed Tuxedo Blazer

This slightly oversized blazer by Ann Taylor is an elegant option for pants or dresses. We love the glam look and fit!

Chic Jeans

Finding the perfect pair of jeans can be a monumental task. When you find that perfect pair for travel that has a little give and is comfortable to sit in for hours, snatch it up!

AE Dreamy Drape Stretch Jeans

I’ve been an American Eagle girlie since the 90s. They still have it. If you haven’t been in for a while, swing by. These jeans have the perfect amount of stretch. You can easily sit on a long flight without the waistband digging in and the lines are stunning with sandals, heels, or clogs.

White House Black Market High Rise Double Pret

These wide-legged khaki jeans fit like they are tailored. White House Black Market always has great jean options. They tend to run a little bit long even in their short length. Take these jeans from day to night with ease. I also love their wide-leg cargo pocket style.

J. Crew Slim Wide Button Fly Jeans

Look put together in this pair of fitted J. Crew jeans. The button fly elongates short torsos and the slim wide style is the perfect compromise between skinny jeans and wide-leg jeans.

Best Fabrics for Lightweight and Elegant Travel Clothing

We touched on fabrics above when discussing individual items, but an overall fabric manifesto will help you choose well when packing light. These are some of our favorites for versatility, comfort, wrinkle resistance, and ease of travel.

  • Micro Modal: Ultra-soft, lightweight, and wrinkle-resistant—perfect for trips to tropical or warmer climates.
  • Merino Wool: Naturally odor-resistant and moisture-wicking. Wear it alone in warmer weather or layer in cooler climates.
  • Stretchy Jersey Knit: Comfortable and polished. You can try to wrinkle it but it’s hard. We love it for trousers and dresses.
  • Linen: It’s fantastic because it’s breathable and helps keep you cool. While it comes in clutch for hot destinations, it is prone to wrinkles. Look for a linen/synthetic blend for less wrinkling.
  • Polyester/Nylon Blends: These heroes of the travel wardrobe are quick-drying, wrinkle-resistant, and durable. Perfect for your basics like tops and pants.

Packing light doesn’t mean you need to look like a slob or repeat outfits. Don’t sacrifice style—it’s all about smart choices. With versatile pieces like jumpsuits, well-made dresses, tailored trousers, and breathable fabrics like micro modal or merino wool, you’ll look chic while traveling minimally.

When I was prepping for my first luxury cruise, I reached out to my high school bestie. She’s a “cruise only” traveler and her line of choice is ultra-luxe Regent Seven Seas. I was ready for an extensive list of must-haves and assumed I’d need multiple suitcases to carry a grand wardrobe.

Boy, was I wrong. She advised me to choose a few timeless classics in neutral colors that fit well and work together to create different outfits. Small, easy-to-pack accessories are the key to changing your looks, she advised. And bring a knockout dress or two and rewear them. She reminded me that no one’s tracking your outfits onboard.

After our conversation, I was relieved that I didn’t have to fret about fancy evening wear. I focused my shopping on finding pieces that would work for me onboard and when I returned home.

Let us inspire your travels! Sign up for our newsletter now.

A Sophisticated Suit is Your Cruise Dinner Power Move

When you want a comfortable, chic look for dinner, a two-piece pants set is an easy, elegant option. Elegance Miss offers a Paris-made collection that hits all the style points. Crafted of easy-care fabric, the sets come with wrap-style tunics, relaxed-fit blouses or button-front tops paired with flare pants that work with heels or flats.

An event-worthy jumpsuit is an alternative fit for this look. The right one for evening wear will be impeccably styled and constructed in a fabric that feels rich on your skin.

Dressed Up, Not Overdone: Chic Alternatives to the Cruise Formalwear Cliché

Have you considered packing an old bridesmaid dress for a cruise formal night? Don’t. Despite what you’ve been told, you really can’t wear it again. Donate it to your local thrift shop and find a sophisticated dress that makes you the center of attention.

The minimalist styles featured in Crescent’s special occasion collection are sophisticated and timeless. Solid color choices include go-with-everything neutrals or brilliant jewel tones. Easily change the look with jewelry and shoe swaps.

Or channel your inner “Emily in Paris” with a selection from the Elegance Miss Parisian Dress collection. Choose one of the head-turning prints. Or, for the most wardrobe flexibility, go with a neutral ivory, anything-but-basic black or glittery gold.

If you prefer a looser fit, look for goddess styles in luxurious silk. The one-size-fits-most dresses and caftans from Vanner House easily transition from day to evening with the addition of lots of gold jewelry and strappy sandals.

You Are What You Carry: The Prettiest Bags and Clutches for Cruise Nights

If you’re a jewelry person, you won’t have a problem accessorizing your evening cruise looks. I’m not, so I rely on a wardrobe of clutches, purses and bags to dress up and change my outfit.

It’s so easy to choose a night purse. You don’t have to fret about capacity, weather resistance or safety features. Night bags just wanna have fun.

If you only want to pack one bag, a simple black phone wallet clutch, like the jetty from shortyLOVE is your go-to. The zip-around style expands ever so gently to hold your essentials while keeping its slim profile.

I always pack at least one glam evening clutch. Metallic fabrics and twinkle beading are glam touches to look for. Online retailer Urban Expressions has a great selection of ever-changing, get it or it’s gone styles, including Art Deco-retro fans and clamshells.

Visiting Europe’s capital cities is a bucket list must for travel lovers. It’s an awesome feeling to stand in the shadow of Big Ben, the Eiffel Tower or the Colosseum for the first time. But prepping for a trip can be a little panicky. You want to dress to fit in and avoid wearing outfits that scream, “I’m an American.”

Choose shoes you’ll be comfortable wearing for walking and waiting in line at crowded museums like the Louvre. Photo credit: Cathy Bennett Kopf

It’s easier now that the entire world dresses more casually. On my first trip overseas, wearing sneakers was a huge no-no. I limped around Paris in heels, cursing implied fashion rules. But after logging many European trips, I believe no one knows I’m from the US until I order a coffee in my giveaway New Yawk accent.

Packing key essentials will make your outfit styling easier and help you capture the local vibe. Here are tips on what to bring, and what to leave at home when visiting Europe’s major cities.

Ready to explore the world? We can help.

When in Rome… Don’t Wear a Graphic Tee

Boho styled tops from Umgee, available through June Adel store
Easy fit blouses from Umgee are great day options when touring European cities. Photo credit: June Adel

A busy Saturday at home might start at the farmer’s market, include brunch with your besties and end at an outdoor concert in the park. Your favorite concert or college tee is your go-to when you’re out all day.

Your European days will be wonderfully long as you pack in all the sights. Comfort’s key, but there are better options than the butter-soft tee you still sleep in sometimes.

A cute Umgee top from June Adel works great with jeans and will pop in pics. The boho styling is a flattering fit for most and neutral color options are a terrific way to extend your wardrobe.

Silk tunic with tiger print in primary colors from Vanner House

A dressier option would be a colorful silk tunic from Vanner House. It’s an easy-to-wear look over jeans. The only accessory you’ll need is a pair of statement sunglasses.

SheBuysTravel Tip: If you’re traveling to Europe in summer, don’t count on air conditioning like the ice box temps we have in the States. Loose-fitting tops can help keep you cool.

Ditch the Sweats! Cuter Options for Strolling

Plan on logging thousands of daily steps when visiting European cities. Although it’s tempting to grab your favorite pair of torn jeans or cozy sweatpants, there are comfy options that look smarter.

When traveling to warm, sunny spots like Madrid or Athens, choose lightweight, loose-fitting pants to beat the heat. These linen beach pants from Cali 1850 come in 15 different patterns to complement your wardrobe palette.

You’ll need at least one pair of jeans in your favorite cut. Vickie’s Gifts has a wide selection of boutique styles, including classic flares and crops with embroidered hems.

By swapping tops and accessories, you can instantly change your look. Choose a simple straight leg for the most flexibility like this one from the Crescent’s chic pants collection.

SheBuysTravel Tip: Charming cobblestone streets look pretty in pics. But they beat your feet. Spend time choosing, and breaking in, your shoes before your trip.

Head-Turning Dresses for Navigating Hills and History

Your secret wardrobe weapon is a dress that makes you feel special and comfortable. You’ll project that confidence when posing for pics. When considering your options, think about the vibe of your destination. A tailored shirtdress is a great choice for afternoon tea in London. Sipping port in Lisbon at golden hours? Consider a flowy maxi with strappy sandals.

The unique dresses collection at Vickie’s Gifts offers several very wearable styles, including this flattering A-line shirt dress, available in black and oatmeal.

This swingy denim mini is a great transitional piece, bridging the seasons from spring to summer and summer to fall.

If your vacay itinerary includes a “wow” moment, like dinner at one of the top restaurants in Paris, you’ll need a knock-out dress, like this one from the Elegance Miss Parisian dress collection.

Prefer an option you can dress up or down depending on your destination? You can’t go wrong with the perfect little black dress.

SheBuysTravel Tip: Your sightseeing itinerary will likely include one or more churches, mosques or temples. Be a responsible tourist and respect the local worshippers during your visit. Pack a top or dress that’s conservatively styled – with sleeves, without a deep plunge – to wear. A scarf worn as a shawl or head covering works too.

Chic Hoodie Alternatives

Push aside the temptation to pack your favorite sweatshirt or windbreaker. Your outfit topper should be as pretty as the rest of your look. And it needs to be versatile. You might need it on the plane when it gets chilly—or strolling through the twinkling Amsterdam canals after dark.

For day, denim is always a great choice. Elevate your jean jacket look with a designer jean jacket from Vanner House. They’re constructed of lightweight stretch denim in two wash options. And they feature your choice of printed design on the back and collar. Traveling to Italy? The Capri works perfectly for sipping limoncello.

If you’re traveling to Europe during shoulder season, you’ll need a warmer jacket. A trendy trench looks great, especially in luxe suede.

Beach? Pool? Find Your Luxe Waterfront Look

A bathing suit and coverup are must-pack essentials, whether you’re planning to hit the ocean, a rooftop pool or a sunny boat deck. A one-piece swimsuit is a timeless choice, whether you opt for basic black or a bold color. The Lenae from WET has flirty ruffles on the leg hem and wide shoulder straps to keep the girls looking great.

And try a twist on a linen button-down for your coverup. WET’s oversized white tunic takes you easily from poolside chaise to cafe. Its classic style is a real wardrobe extender.

Don’t Love a Chest Crossbody?

I haven’t fallen in love with the chest crossbody. I understand the convenience of having all your stuff at hand and out of reach of strangers. I’ve tried several styles and they’re not flattering on me.

I prefer a classic crossbody that’s large enough for my phone and a few essentials but fits slim at my hip. The made-in-the-US Postal Crossbody from Vanner House comes in 4 leather color choices and features an envelope flap secured by a brass clasp.
