A Disney Cruise is one of our favorite family vacations—and easily one of the best for kids. There’s something for everyone, and as a mom, it’s one of the few trips where I feel like I actually get a break, too! Our kids loved the clubs at every age, from playtime fun to teen hangouts at Vibe.

One beloved tradition among Disney Cruise fans is decorating cabin doors. In this guide, we’ll show you where to buy fun magnets—and how to create your own with free templates and easy DIY steps to add a personal, budget-friendly touch.

Stateroom Door Decoration Tips for Your First Disney Cruise

Years ago, a clever person (I always wondered who it was) realized that the stateroom doors on a Disney cruise are metal and, therefore, magnets will stick to them. In the years since, decorating your door has become a beloved Disney Cruise tradition whether you’re sailing on the Disney Magic, Dream, Wish, Fantasy or Wonder.

Let us inspire your travels! Sign up for our newsletter now.

Where can I get Disney Stateroom Door Magnets?

It’s now easy and very inexpensive to laminate your items at home. You can easily find a home lamination machine and sheets at your local big box store. Photo credit: Melissa Mortenson

There are many places that sell magnets specifically designed for a DCL stateroom door. You can find them on Etsy or Amazon. You can also make your own magnets! It’s super easy, and you DO NOT need to be crafty to do this!

Making your own Disney Cruise Line magnets is a great way to save money for your vacation! We have a free printable template for you and the supplies to create the magnets are affordable (you might even have a lot of them around your house already).

What Types of Magnets Do You See on Doors on a Disney Cruise?

There are so many fun ways to celebrate on your Disney Cruise; door magnets are just one of them. If you’re on a special sailing like the Marvel, Pixar or Star Wars Day at Sea, you’ll see a lot of themed magnets on doors.

You’ll also see a lot of seasonal magnets for those on a Holiday or Halloween cruise. We cruised one year on Easter and there were a lot of cute Mickey Mouse magnets with Easter Bunny ears on doors.

You will often see several magnets on the door, with family names. This comes in handy if your teens make friends with other kids in the Teen Club. That way, their friends can leave them notes on the small fish clipboard next to the cabin door.

Other Ways to Decorate a Disney Cruise Stateroom Door

You never know when a stormtrooper will swing by the pool. It’s just one of the fun surprises on a Disney Cruise. Photo credit: Melissa Mortenson

In addition to magnets, you’ll also find small whiteboards and fish extenders on doors.

The whiteboards allow families traveling together in separate cabins to leave messages for one another. (We used them a lot when we traveled with our kids when they were teens, since we let them roam the ship with their friends).

A fish extender is a bag or pouch (like a skinny over-the-door shoe organizer) hung from the metal fish next to each cabin door on a cruise ship. It has a pocket and people leave messages and treats for one another in the pockets.

We have a fun — and free! — printable Mickey Door Decoration for you.

The free printable includes several Mickey silhouettes with different hats, allowing you to create one for each member of your family.

Included are:

  1. Simple Mickey Mouse
  2. Minnie Mouse with Bow (in 3 different colors)
  3. Pirate Mickey (swap out your other Disney magnet with this one on Pirate Night on the ship)
  4. Sailor Mickey
  5. Santa Hat Mickey (great for Holiday sailings)
  6. Witch Hat Mickey (if you’re lucky enough to be sailing on a Halloween on the High Seas voyage).
  7. “The ______ Family” Mickey – ready for you to personalize with letter stickers.

How To Make Disney Cruise Door Magnets

Supplies:

  • Cardstock or Printable Magnetic Sheets
  • Adhesive Magnetic Strips if using Cardstock
  • Scissors
  • Optional:
  • Letter Stickers
  • Lamination Machine (you can also have them laminated at an office supply store)

Option 1:

Print on magnet paper and cut out.

Option 2:

Print on Cardstock, Laminate, and add magnets.

This is the method I prefer. It’s more cost-effective as printable magnet sheets can be expensive. You are also more likely to run into printing problems due to the thickness of the sheets.

Lamination is inexpensive and easy, you can take the door magnets to your local copy shop to have them laminated, or use a home laminator. There are a lot of great ones on the market.

Also, using this method makes it easy to add letter stickers to your images to personalize your magnets.

How Do I Personalize the Magnets?

disney cruise door magnets tutorial
Be sure to print your images on cardstock so that they hold up well for traveling. Photo credit: Melissa Mortenson

There are a few ways to personalize the Disney Cruise magnet template freebie that we have for you.

  1. You can upload the PDF to an online graphics software (like PicMonkey or Canva)
  2. If you have a machine like a Cricut, you can cut out letters from Vinyl and adhere them to the cardstock.
  3. You can use letter stickers.

If you’re someone who’s not super crafty, I recommend going the letter sticker route. There’s not any technology to fuss with and you don’t need any special craft tools. Just a pair of sharp scissors.

What Free Disney Font Should I Use?

If you choose to customize your magnet using online software like PicMonkey or cut out a name with a Cricut machine, you’re going to want to use a fun Disney font!

If you want to go for classic Disney, I recommend Waltograph. You can also infuse a bit of other “Disney Magic’ into your design by using an Avengers-inspired font like Avengero. Or a Nemo-inspired font like Lost Fish.

How to Assemble Your Family Disney Magnets

Print out the template from our free download. The download contains several pages, you only need to print the pages with the images you’d like to use.

Step One: Print

Be sure to print the image on cardstock, so your magnet will hold up well!

If you want to personalize your magnet, you can use one of the options I mentioned above.

It’s so easy to personalize your signs with stickers from the craft store. Photo credit: Melissa Mortenson

Step Two: Personalize

I personalized my magnets using letter stickers I got at the craft store.

SheBuysTravel Tip: Line up your letter stickers on a ruler first. Just place the bottom edge of the sticker on the edge of the ruler. You can rearrange the stickers and check the placement before you adhere them to your Mickey’s head.

When you’ve got the stickers in the place you’d like, adhere the stickers starting with the top, then gently pull away from the ruler from underneath.

disney cruise door magnets tutorial
Be sure to apply your stickers before you laminate your creations. Photo credit: Melissa Mortenson

Step 3: Finishing

To finish your customized cruise door magnet, simply run the image through a laminator and cut it out with scissors.

disney cruise door magnets tutorial
Use sharp scissors to cut out your images after they are laminated. Photo credit: Melissa Mortenson

Adhere some magnet strips to the back so that they will stick to your stateroom door.

SheBuysTravel Tip: You’re going to need more magnets than you think you do! We also recommend taking a few extra adhesive magnet strips with you on your cruise in case any of the magnets fall off during transport.

disney cruise door magnets
Make sure the magnets adhere well to the back of your sign. Photo credit: Melissa Mortenson

If you have a hot glue gun, you can use it to adhere the magnet strips to the back. It will be a bit more secure than the glue that comes already applied to the magnet strip.

Where to Buy Disney Cruise Door Decorations

If you don’t want to DIY a cute set of Disney door magnets, don’t stress! You can easily buy some. Just make sure you order them with plenty of time for them to arrive before your Disney Cruise Line Vacation.

If you want a set of personalized magnets I recommend Etsy. There are several sellers there that will customize your magnet set with names or dates.

You can also find several styles of magnets on Amazon.

You’ve been working for months to plan the perfect surprise Disney vacation. Your dining and hotel reservations are booked. You have downloaded our Disney packing list and everything is good to go. Now, it’s time to decide how to reveal the Disney surprise to the children. Many wait until the day of departure to avoid the “How many more days?” questions. Others give Disney trips as birthday or Christmas gifts and count down the days. There are so many creative ways to add some extra pixie dust to your big reveal. I can’t wait to share some of our ideas with you.

Disney Surprise: The. Best. Gift. Ever!

I have planned surprise Disney trips several times for my family. As a travel agent, I truly believe there is no greater gift than travel. And I have learned from each experience that the age of your children is very important when determining how and when to reveal the Disney surprise. The younger they are, the longer you should wait.

I learned that lesson the hard way. The first time we surprised our son he was 5. We let him open a present full of Disney Parks items two weeks before departure. He was thrilled to open a present but the reveal ended in tears. He wanted a toy. Something he could play with right then and there. Of course he did, he was 5. And he didn’t understand that he would have to wait Two. Whole Weeks. before we would be at Disney World.

We should have waited until the day we left to avoid the disappointment.

SheBuysTravel Tip:  If your child is under the age of 7, consider waiting until the day you leave to share the surprise trip. Children at this age simply do not understand time and you could end up with a tearful situation. And choose to stay in one of these magical Disney World resorts for kids.

Disney Surprise Reveal in a Restaurant

This was by far my favorite Disney surprise! We took our children to Walt Disney World for a week in December. Yes, we are those parents who take the kids out of school to visit Disney when the crowds are low.

We told our kids we were going that evening to see an amazing Christmas light display. I had packed the car earlier in the day and secured the suitcases so the kids could not see them. On our way to the lights, we stopped by Cracker Barrel for dinner.

My husband gave the hostess a bag containing two Mickey Santa ears and asked the server to deliver these to the table with our drink order.

The reveal was priceless. The children were in shock when the server arrived at the table with their ears. My son (then age 13) immediately looked at me with big eyes and asked, “Are we going on a Disney World Trip?” My daughter (then age 5) started crying and grabbed onto me for dear life murmuring, “Thank you! Thank you!

All of the nearby tables started clapping, which added to the excitement. We left the restaurant and drove halfway to Disney that evening.

Disney Surprise with a Scavenger Hunt or Treasure Hunt

Surprising your children with a scavenger hunt is a very popular reveal. Warning – this will require some creativity on your part. The ultimate goal is to give the children an idea of where they are going without telling them outright.

Start with clues that allow them to discover general vacation items, such as road trip games to play in the car. Gradually add Disney-specific items such as mouse ears, autograph books, backpack, MagicBands, customized Disney shirts, their favorite Disney character plush, etc. The big reveal comes at the end of the scavenger hunt when they realize they have collected a bunch of Disney gear.

Christmas Reveal with Elf on the Shelf

One of the best ideas I have seen for surprising children with a trip for Christmas is to use your Elf on a Shelf. Those of you who are crafty can easily create a set of Mickey ears for your elf. If you are lacking in the creativity department, you can purchase the Mickey Mouse Mouseketeer Ear Hat Ornament or the Mickey Mouse Ears Hat Keychain from the Disney Store. All you have to do is remove the string/chain and pop it on your elf’s head. Set the elf out wherever you desire and the reveal is sure to be magical.

SheBuysTravel Tip: If you are giving the trip as a Christmas gift, consider waiting until January 1 to travel. The crowds in Walt Disney World and Disneyland are at an all-time high from Christmas morning through New Year’s Eve. In my opinion, this is the worst time (crowd-wise) to visit. Alternatively, visiting the first two weeks of December is an ideal time.

Personalized Puzzle Reveal

I was kicking myself for not thinking of this when I first read about it. This is such a simple thing to do. Find an image (or create one using Canva) that shows your Disney destination with the wording “Surprise! You’re going to Disney!” (or something similar). Once you have the perfect image, visit www.portraitpuzzles.com and turn it into a puzzle.

The puzzles some in several sizes. Choose the one that’s right for your kids’ ages:

  • 30 pieces: Ages 3-6
  • 99 pieces: Ages 5+
  • 200 pieces: Ages 7-9
  • 500 to 1000 pieces: Ages 9-up

Puzzle prices start at $34.99. The process is very quick. It only takes 1-2 business days for your puzzle to be created and shipped. All you have to do is give the kids the puzzle and have them put it together for the reveal.

Disguise Vacation as a Work Trip

If you aren’t very good with packing suitcases and concealing them from the kids, consider this Disney surprise.  All you have to do is tell the kids you are going out of town on business and taking them with you. It doesn’t matter where you tell them you are going. If you don’t want to tell a fib, suggest you are going to stay in a hotel for a few days. This will work with the younger kids. Simply pack up the car, or hop on an airplane and go.

If you are flying and your children are older, you may want to consider revealing the surprise at the airport. Once they see the destination at the airport, your surprise may be over. We used the work trip surprise on our son when he was 9 and waited until we were on the plane to reveal.

If your children are little, you may be able to wait until you arrive at the parks. Whether you are heading to Anaheim, Orlando, Disney’s Aulani Resort & Spa, or on a Disney Cruise, the surprise trip is always a great idea.

SheBuysTravel Tip:  Be careful you do not get the children too excited about the “work trip” destination. Too much hype could end up with disappointed children when they learn they aren’t going to visit the intended destination.

Surprise! You’re Going to Disney!

Now that you know some great ways to present the big surprise, I want to share with you some of our favorite surprise video reveals.

Where to Buy Discounted Disney Tickets

We recommend purchasing your Disney tickets through Get Away Today. Not only does the company have the lowest prices, it offers a best price guarantee. If you ever find park tickets cheaper, Get Away Today won’t just match the price, the company will beat it.

If you call to make your purchase be sure to mention SheBuysTravel!

When we arrived at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, it was the fourth day of an epic Disney trip.

We’d visited the three other Walt Disney World parks (the Magic Kingdom, EPCOT and Hollywood Studios), and each park had been dazzling. This was our first trip as a family to Disney, and my kids (ages 4, 4 and 7) were running on happy energy.

But as we walked through The Oasis Exhibits (the leafy, green animal habitats that form the entrance corridor to the park), I started to wonder if this might be our favorite park yet. Canopied by shade, we passed giant anteaters, spoonbills and bubbling waterfalls. It was gorgeous. I knew immediately that my kids were going to love it here.

Here’s what we learned on our family trip, and everything you need to know to make a trip to Animal Kingdom with little ones top-notch.

Travel Around the World at Animal Kingdom

In Africa (one of Animal Kingdom’s themed lands), we hopped aboard an open-air safari vehicle for Kilimanjaro Safaris, an 18-minute guided tour of a 110-acre lush African savanna. We spotted graceful giraffes, a hippopotamus duo, a white rhino, cheetahs, gazelles and a lion.

On the Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail, we trekked along winding paths through a 5-acre tropical forest and spotted curious meerkats, a gerenuk and a family of western lowland gorillas. The best part about the trail is that it’s self-guided, which is perfect for families.

SheBuysTravel Tip: Budding scientists and future veterinarians will want to ride the Wildlife Express Train to the Conservation Station at Rafiki’s Planet Watch, where families can get a close-up look at veterinary treatment, resident scientists at work and experts preparing food for the animals. The station’s petting zoo is also not to be missed.

In Asia, the Maharajah Jungle Trek offers families the chance to explore mystical trails and view animals such as Asian tigers, gibbons, a komodo dragon and more than 50 species of birds. For thrill-seekers, Kali River Rapids brings a whitewater adventure (note: you will get wet!) and Expedition Everest – Legend of the Forbidden Mountain is a roller coaster that careens through Himalayan peaks on a speeding train. (With a height requirement of 44 inches or taller, this one is not for the little ones.)

Dine with Disney Characters at Animal Kingdom

One of the best meals we ate at Disney was at Animal Kingdom’s Tusker House

This restaurant offers a plentiful buffet of some of the most amazing African-inspired dishes. We noshed on naan with house-made hummus and tzatziki sauce, quinoa and chickpea salad, Chermoula salmon, green curry shrimp and Moroccan Harira soup. There are plenty of kid-friendly options such as house-made macaroni and cheese, green beans and corn dog nuggets, too.

But aside from the delicious cuisine (which is reason enough to go here!), Tusker House is a character dining experience. As we dined, Mickey, Donald, Daisy and Goofy stopped by our table multiple times to take photos and chat with the kids.

SheBuysTravel Tip: The restaurant even offers kids souvenir cards with all of the characters’ autographs on them, and the characters and staff parade down the aisles singing a festive song during the meal.

A stop at Tusker House is absolutely a “must-do” item for any of our family’s future visits to Animal Kingdom.

Preschoolers can enjoy the musical performance Festival of the Lion King at Walt Disney World’s Animal Kingdom.

See World-Class Stage Shows at Animal Kingdom

Our family loves Disney’s classic film The Lion King, and the park’s lauded Festival of the Lion King show is spectacular.

Performed in the round (where the audience surrounds the stage), there’s not a bad seat in the house for this powerful Broadway-style musical revue. The show features large-scale puppetry, acrobatics, songs and performances based on the movie, and the audience is invited to interact with the performers during the show. Our seven-year-old was selected to participate in the show, and she returned to her seat grinning from ear to ear after.

Another performance favorite at the park is Finding Nemo: The Big Blue…And Beyond! In this colorful stage show, performers, puppetry, songs and special effects combine to create a 25-minute show that’s perfect for small children.

Take your kids to the Boneyard play area in Dinoland U.S.A. at Walt Disney World’s Animal Kingdom.

Travel Back in Time at Animal Kingdom

In the themed land of Dinoland U.S.A., we soared above trees on a triceratops gondola for TriceraTop Spin, a thrilling ride for little ones.

The walkthrough Cretaceous Trail showcases plants that date back to the Cretaceous period, dinosaur sculptures, a Dino Institute dig and plenty of photo ops.

But my kids’ favorite attraction of all was The Boneyard, an expansive open-air play space (for kids 10 and under) designed to look like a dinosaur dig. My kids scaled rope ladders and bridges, climbed through caves, slid down slides and laughed and played with other children. There is ample seating for parents, too, offering a much-needed place to relax while the kids play.

Visit Kid-friendly Experiences and Rides at Animal Kingdom

Disney’s Animal Kingdom is home to many attractions and experiences that are great for young kids.

Beneath the Tree of Life, stroll along wooden footbridges and through tunnels on the self-guided journey Discovery Island Trails, or step into a hidden theater at the base of the tree for the 3D film and live show It’s Tough to be a Bug!, inspired by the Disney and Pixar movie A Bug’s Life.

Fans of James Cameron’s Avatar will appreciate Pandora – The World of Avatar, a themed land that encompasses the self-led hike Valley of Mo’ara and the bioluminescent rainforest journey Na’vi River Journey, a gentle boat ride that’s perfect for young children. Older children and adults will want to try Avatar Flight of Passage, a 3D flight ride over Pandora’s incredible landscape.

How to Skip the Lines and Get the Best Photos at Animal Kingdom

If you’re planning to do rides with young kids at Animal Kingdom, invest in Lightning Lanes. Lightning Lane entry (which replaced the prior FastPass system) allows you to bypass an attraction’s line and join a much shorter line for certain experiences. Some Lightning Lane entrances can be purchased through Disney Genie+ service, while others can be purchased individually.

However you buy them, Lightning Lane access will allow you to skip waiting in long lines – something that made our Disney experience much better when traveling with young children.

Another service that improved our experience at Disney was renting strollers for our kids. We ended up renting two double strollers: one for our two preschoolers, and another for the seven year old and our backpack (because even at age 7, a stroller can seem like a good idea when you’ve been walking all day).

SheBuysTravel Tip: The SheBuysTravel guide to renting strollers at Walt Disney World has essential info for families on this topic, including how to make yours stand out in a crowded buggy parking lot.

Last but not least: if you want great photos of your Disney vacation, Disney PhotoPass is fantastic. It allows you to have professional photos taken at locations throughout Disney’s theme parks, and the Memory Maker option allows you to pay one price for all of them. Disney’s MagicBand+ made this especially easy, allowing each photographer to simply scan my band to have the photos instantly appear in the My Disney Experience app on my phone.

Walt Disney World’s Animal Kingdom Details

Disney’s Animal Kingdom is located near Orlando at 2901 Osceola Parkway in Lake Buena Vista, Florida, 32830.

The park is 30 minutes by car or charter bus from either the Orlando International Airport, the Orlando Brightline station or the Orlando Amtrak station. Parking is free for guests of Disney resort hotels (and select annual passholders); all other vehicles will pay a daily parking fee that starts at $30 per day.

SheBuysTravel Tip: If you’re staying onsite at a Walt Disney World Resort hotel, you won’t need a car to get to Animal Kingdom. It’s a huge perk of booking one of the on-property Disney Resort hotels like Art of Animation, where we stayed. Transportation via bus is complimentary, with private Minnie Van transportation available via Lyft in a whimsical red and white polka-dotted “Minnie” van (for a nominal fee).

We didn’t drive at all during our trip; we took a Brightline high-speed passenger train from our home in South Florida to the station at the Orlando International Airport, then took the Mears Connect charter bus service to our Disney resort hotel (and then the reverse on the way home). I’d recommend it to anyone.

One of the many things that young kids love about visiting Disney Parks is meeting all the characters. Collecting character autographs can make a great memory keeper and souvenir for kids. We all know the traditional way of collecting autographs is to use an autograph book, but what about other unique ways you can collect character autographs?

11 Unique Ways to Collect Character Autographs

If you’re ready to amp up your Disney vacation and come home with a great memory souvenir, check out these unique ideas for collecting character autographs!

Hats

There are a variety of ways you can use hats to collect autographs from Disney characters. One of the classic ideas it to bring along a white ball cap and some sharpies. The ball cap is also handy for keeping the strong sun off kids’ faces.

Another idea is to use a themed hat of your favorite character. Locate your favorite character, and have them sign the hat so you can have an autographed memory of your trip that also is wearable!

Character Encyclopedia

One of our favorite character autograph experience trips was when we packed the Disney Junior Encyclopedia of Animated Characters book along for our trip and had characters autograph their book page.

The characters all go crazy when they see their page, plus both of my girls still have the books as keepsakes and love looking inside to find the signatures.

Printable Card Pages

One year I found some adorable graphically designed digital cards that I had printed on cardstock and bound together. Then when we lined up to get a character autograph, we’d flip to the card with the character’s graphic and have them sign that card.

Pillowcase

This is a fun idea that many have used when they’re on a Disney cruise. You can even create or buy a custom pillowcase that is Disney themed, or embroidered. I recommend packing the case along with a clipboard or strong cardboard to help keep the fabric tight when getting the character’s signature.

Photo Mat

For a great family memory, pack along a wide photo mat to collect character autographs. Be sure to look for one that has a 4×6 or 5×7 inch opening.  After the trip, get a family photo printed and put together with the autographed mat for a great display and memory of your Disney family vacation.

Mickey Ears

If you’re a classic Mickey fan, getting autographed Mickey ears might be the perfect souvenir for you. Pack along a white oil based sharpie marker, and buy some classic black Mickey ears in the park. The characters will love signing the hat, and might even play along with how much of the hat space they’re going to take up!

Printed Photo Book

If you’re really ambitious and have some photoshop skills, this idea might be the one for you. Collect character autographs on white cardstock and snap a great photo of you (your kiddo) with the character. When you get home, use a photo book printing service to create a custom photo book with the photo on one page and the signature on the other. It might work best if you can pull the signature off the paper with some photoshop skills so the signature looks like it’s part of the book instead of a white image block.

T-shirt

Another idea for a Disney signature keepsake is to use a t-shirt to collect autographs. I’m unsure of the rules for characters signing clothing that is being worn, so I recommend packing the t-shirt along with a piece of cardboard.

You might consider getting a custom made t-shirt that has a fun design on the main shirt area. Perhaps a hollow mickey head that you can collect signatures inside. It’s probably a good idea to be sure to wash the shirt before the trip.

9″ Vinylmation

A new idea I’ve heard about is to collect autographs using a white 9″ vinylmation Mickey. I’m guessing a fine tip sharpie marker might work best for this one since the surface is a little tricky to sign. However, afterwards you’ll have a fun Disney keepsake. Make it colorful by packing along a variety of colored sharpie pens.

Quilt Pieces

If you sew, this project might be perfect for you. Bring along pre-cut white fabric quilt squares to collect autographs. Be sure to bring a clipboard or something along that will give the characters a firm surface to sign on. Once you’ve collected a variety of signatures, put them together into a beautiful and fun quilt along with some great Disney fabric edging. See a great example in this pin.

Polaroid Snaps

While the photo quality will never be what you can get from a digital camera, Polaroid snapshots is a fun idea for teens and tweens wanting to collect autographs. They can get a photo snapped and printed, then the character can sign at the bottom of photo in the white border. These would be fun to then hang in their school locker or home bulletin board.

On your next Disney vacation these 11 unique ways to collect character autographs will take you beyond the autograph book and have you leaving with a great memory keepsake.

Disney fan? We get it. And we have loads of ways for you to get your Disney fix while at home — and it’s much more than binge watching Disney+. Take a walk down Disney’s Main Street, a ride on a roller coaster or learn to make Imagineer magic with these virtual Disney at home experiences. It’s the next best thing to being there.

At my house, we would love to have a Disney vacation several times a year. Sadly, that isn’t possible. So, what now? If we can’t go to Disney, we like to bring Disney home. There are so many ways to experience that Disney magic — from rides to games to movies — right in our own living room. It’s one of the ways we rev up the excitement about an upcoming Disney vacation. It’s also a great way to extend our Disney vacation experience long after we come home.

Even if you don’t have a Disney vacation coming up any time soon, these virtual Disney experiences and at home Disney activities make it easy to bring Disney home.

Walt Disney World Virtual Tours

One of my favorite ways to feel like I’m there even when I’m sitting on the couch is to take a virtual tour. You can use your computer, tablet or cell phone to take a walk down Main Street and look up at Cinderella’s castle. My girls compete to see who can locate their favorite ride the fastest. The Visit Orlando website has virtual tours through EPCOT, Hollywood Studios, Animal Kingdom, Magic Kingdom and the two water parks. It’s a great way to orient yourself before a visit IRL.

One of the best virtual tours features a behind-the-scenes tour of the Imagineering Studio.

Virtual Disney Rides

Finding the rides on a virtual tour is just the first step for my daughters. Next up is jumping on the ride, virtually. Their favorite is the Frozen Ever After ride. They “ride” it over and over again. This is a really great tool for planning a Disney vacation because you can see which rides to put on your “must-do” list.

Here is a list of the rides you can virtually experience at both Disney World and Disneyland:

Walt Disney World

Disneyland

Be a Walt Disney Imagineer

You can become a Disney Imagineer from home, thanks to the Imagineer in a Box from the Kahn Academy. Kids (and you — we don’t judge!) can complete project-based exercises to design their own theme park. We love this because it’s a great STEM activity — there are lessons in science, technology, engineering, and math. That’s exactly what we would expect from Kahn Academy, the terrific free online education site.

Free Disney Coloring Sheets

Disney Coloring Sheets

I love coloring with my kids and they love when I do it. And since we’re Disney lovers, our favorite coloring sheets come from Disney. We print these great coloring sheets at home for free:

Disney Audiobooks

My kids love audiobooks and if you haven’t tried them with your kids NOW is the time. My kids enjoy listening to these audiobooks at night before bed. You can stream them on several Amazon devices; the Amazon Echo Dot Kids Edition is our favorite. Here are some of our Disney favorites:

Disney play app game that you can play at home

Disney Play App

We love the Disney Play App for passing the time when we’re waiting in line for rides at the Disney parks. It’s a fun way to interact with the rides and even some of the lands (like Star Wars Land). But until now, the app didn’t work outside the parks. Now, however, in honor of the new Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway ride at Hollywood Studios, you can play Mickey & Minnie’s Trivia Time at home. We play against one another.

Show Off Your Disney Duds

Who says you can only wear your Disney shirts and ears when you’re in the parks? If you’re going to make a full day or weekend of a Disney at home “vacation,” don your favorite pair of ears and your matching Disney shirts and embrace the feeling. Don’t have fun Disney shirts for everyone in the family? Here’s where to get a little DIY Disney shirt inspiration.

At Home Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique

The Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique is an experience that makes little girls feel like princesses. As a mom of three girls, I can tell you that it’s easy to recreate this experience at home. All you need is a princess costumenail polish, make-up and some hair glitter! Complete your at-home make-overs and the kids will start calling you their very own “Fairy Godmother.” Moms like feeling like a princess, too, so if you are feeling really brave, you can let the kids give you a princess makeover.

Play Disney-Themed Games

Disney Song Challenge: This game includes songs from 90 movies and TV shows. Fair warning: You may have trouble “Letting it Go” when you finish playing.

Olafs Ice Adventure: This Frozen version of the popular “Trouble” game comes with 4 ice molds for making icy Olaf tokens. The player with the last Olaf standing wins.

Disney Hidden Picture Game ages 4+: What little kid wouldn’t love a 6-foot-long game board? Spread it out on the floor and let the kiddos have fun looking for their favorite Disney icons.

Binge Disney+

OK, this is the easiest way to get that Disney feeling at home. A night of Frozen and Frozen 2 is the easiest way to entertain my family for the night. Families with older kids can stream the whole Star Wars franchise or re-watch all of those Marvel classics. But Disney classic movies aren’t the only things streaming on the new Disney+  service. There also are fun behind-the-scenes and special experiences videos that serious Disney fans will want to devour. Start with these:

Shop Disney Favorites

There are so many fun Disney products that can add a little Disney into your everyday life. In fact, we’ve found 40+ items that Disney lovers will love. They are a great way to celebrate Disney at home and surprise your family with pixie-dusted gifts. We need this one more than ever:

Plan Your Next Disney Vacation

Maybe the best way to bring Disney home is to spend more time planning your next Disney vacation. There are so many things to think about — where you’ll stay, what parks you’ll visit, even what you need to pack. The excitement can build months before your Disney vacation. Also, we’re happy to share that Get Away Today is offering to hold your vacation for just $175 down! Better yet, the final payment is due just seven days before you go. So put your next Disney vacation on layaway and have fun planning your next trip!!

When a toddler has a meltdown, it’s not pretty. When that meltdown happens on a ride line in the Magic Kingdom, it’s the opposite of   magical. One way to help avoid tantrums and tears is to include napping at Disney as one of your must-do activities. Here are mom-tested tips to help you structure your Disney days so that your littles get the rest they desperately need to get through long, hot park days and nights that stretch way past normal bedtimes.

Napping at Disney won’t resemble naps at home in familiar cribs and beds. We recommend using equipment like baby carriers and strollers to max advantage when visiting the parks. And build in afternoon rest periods. This is much easier to do when you’re staying at an on-property Disney resort.

Here are five ways to make napping at Disney more likely to happen.

1. Use a stroller.

If you are coming to Disney World with a child under the age of 6, chances are you need a stroller. We tried to get away without one this month because our youngest is almost 5. Nope! We missed it. He missed it. And my 7-year-old missed the opportunity to squish in with his brother too. Strollers carry things. They keep a little one out of the sun. They keep kids contained. And they are a wonderful place to sleep. I’m always amazed at how quickly my kids fall asleep in a stroller. Even a short cat nap helps revive them to avoid meltdowns later in the day.

2. Let them sleep wherever they can.

Whether it’s on a 20-minute bus or monorail ride, during a show, or in the air-conditioned tent in Dumbo, let them get sleep in wherever you can. One of the reasons I like to drive to Disney World is because I can let the kids sleep in the car. Remember though, just because the kids usually get a two-hour nap at exactly 2 p.m. every day, that doesn’t mean they need that necessarily at Disney World.

3. Plan a mid-afternoon siesta.

For those who are adamant about actually napping at Disney, you may want to shift your day around a bit. Get up early and hit the parks as early as you can. Then go…go…go until about 2 p.m. Head back to your hotel room to rest during the hottest part of the day. You can head back to the parks after dinner for some more rides and of course, fireworks. If you have older children, you might get some pushback. This could force you to divide and conquer, with one parent staying with the younger kids who need to rest and the other parent managing older children who can push through.

4. Use “rest” periods.

Sometimes, napping at Disney just isn’t possible. For many kids, it may be enough to just get out of the heat and the sun and let them chill out for a while. I love using the Baby Care Centers for this. They are relaxed, often quiet, and can give you a chance to just sit and recuperate for a bit.

5. “Wear” smaller kids.

Baby-wearing has become more and more popular, especially at theme parks. However, it’s not just newborns that can be worn. From the smallest of babies to some pretty big four 4-year-olds, there are carriers that can comfortably fit each child. Small babies who may get overwhelmed by the sights, sounds, and smells of Disney Parks, can particularly benefit from baby-wearing. The carriers can shield them from the noise around them and let them quiet down and sleep.

For bigger kids, think about investing in a backpack carrier that can comfortably fit toddlers and preschoolers. Even the crankiest kids tend to fall right asleep when nestled against your back or your chest. The downside about wearing kids is that they can get heavy and make you hot. Try to avoid one parent carrying the child all day as this may be too strenuous in the heat and humidity of Orlando.

Napping at Disney is something that can help to make your day a little less stressful. Naps can also help to curb tantrums and meltdowns so your family can make it to the fireworks each night. While it is difficult to keep a strict schedule on a Disney vacation, embracing a little structure can be useful. Younger children will especially benefit from your foresight in thinking about how to nap on vacation. And when your little kids are in a good mood, it is so much easier for the whole family to be in a good mood.

If this feels overwhelming to you, just know that this is a short season of life you are in. In a few years, you won’t even think about having to stop for a nap during the day for your kids. Enjoy these magical young years when you have them!

If you haven’t been to Walt Disney World in a while, or even if you’ve been in the last two years, things are changing constantly. Rules put into place after Disney reopened are going to be lifted soon. Let’s run through changing Disney rules, new rides, EPCOT’s redesign and upgrades at Disneyland so that you can be informed and ready for your Disney vacation.

Genie+ – Slight Improvement When There’s Nowhere to Go but Up

Let’s face it – Disney Genie+ has been met with mixed reception. When you take something as beloved as FastPass and replace it with a paid tool, that’s bad. But one that requires you to wake up at 7 am on vacation? Worse. Then making the price variable so that on some days it costs $35? It’s like they threw all of their worst ideas in a hat and used them to make decisions. Supposedly they are looking at some options for later in 2023 that will allow folks to purchase and make reservations ahead of their visit. We’ll see.

Magic Kingdom Changes

If you’ve been keeping up with breaking Disney news, D23 expo announcements or travel sites, there’s no doubt that you’ve heard about the major upgrades and changes at Disney parks. Magic Kingdom Park in particular has a list of new rides, refurbishments and old shows returning.

Tron Lightcycle Run

One of the most talked about new attractions in the Disney theme parks is the Tron Lightcycle Run Presented by Enterprise. Located in Magic Kingdom’s Tomorrowland, this brand new ride’s opening date was April 4, 2023. There is also a Tron Lightcycle Power Run at Shanghai Disneyland that opened in 2016.

There are two ways to ride this roller coaster. You can either request to enter the virtual queue using the My Disney Experience app or you can purchase an Individual Lightning Lane paid entry. There is no standby queue or availability through Disney Genie+.

Splash Mountain

Chatter has been brewing since the announcement but then went dormant as we all waited to hear timing. We’ll be seeing Splash Mountain reimagined as Tiana’s Bayou Adventure. Construction has started. Based on concept art, we know that the theming is inspired by the Disney movie The Princess and the Frog. The expected opening is set for late 2024 so it will be awhile. Splash Mountain has shut down and is in active refurbishment right now.

Haunted Mansion

This fan favorite is gaining a new haunt in 2023. Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion has a character referred to as the Hatbox Ghost. He’ll be joining the Orlando, Florida Haunted Mansion this year. No word yet on which ghost will be kicked out to keep the number at 999 happy haunts!

Happily Ever After is Back

Disney fans weren’t the biggest fans of Magic Kingdom’s Enchantment nighttime spectacular. That show ended in April and the beloved Happily Ever After nighttime show is back. Cheering crowds are loving the nostalgia of the narration; the show even got a few updates on its return.

This show can be viewed from numerous vantage points because it encompasses all of Main Street U.S.A. as projections light it up.

Mirabel Debuts in the Fairytale Garden

If your littles can’t stop talking about Mirabel and Encanto, you’re in luck. Starting later in 2023, Mirabel will have her own character meet and greet in the Fairytale Garden. It is located to the right of Cinderella Castle along the pathway between Fantasyland and Tomorrowland. Currently, this is where Merida meets take place.

The Walt Disney World Railroad is Chugging Around the Park Again

After being out of commission for what felt like forever, the Walt Disney World Railroad is back. This train chugs around the Magic Kingdom stopping at three stations: Main Street U.S.A., Frontierland and Fantasyland. The whole trip is 20 minutes long and covers a mile and a half. It’s a great way to get kiddos to take a nap on a busy park day!

Special Events at Magic Kingdom

Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party returns. It will run from August 11, 2023 – November 1, 2023. We can also (hopefully) look forward to Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party returning in late 2023.

What’s New at Disney’s Animal Kingdom in 2023?

One of the most buzzed about Animal Kingdom additions is the Moana character meet. She’s stationed on Discovery Island at Character Landing. Be sure to add this new character opportunity to your agenda.

Families should be aware that The Boneyard play area will be closed for refurbishment during May and part of June. Don’t worry though; there are plenty of other kid-friendly things to do at Animal Kingdom.

There aren’t a lot of other changes on deck for Animal Kingdom at the moment. Concepts of a Moana area and a Zootopia area have both been discussed at the D23 Expo and we’re crossing our fingers for both!

A Complete Re-Imagining at EPCOT

While the World Showcase hasn’t seen any major changes since the opening of Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure, the entire front portion of EPCOT has been redesigned. If you remember Future World from past trips, it won’t look the same when you head there next year. It’s not even new additions; it’s a full new area.

Think of EPCOT as now being made up of four world themes. Three new themes – World Celebration, World Discovery and World Nature – will join the World Showcase.

World Celebration

The area of World Celebration focuses on connecting with a global community. Spaceship Earth is included in this area. In 2023, a character meet with Figment will debut in the Imagination Pavilion.

Dreamers Point at EPCOT

A planned area called Dreamers Point will be located behind Spaceship Earth and will feature a new statue of Walt Disney as Walt the Dreamer.

Building Festivals into the Infrastructure at EPCOT

The World Celebration area will also be an integral part of EPCOT’s festival scene. CommuniCore Hall and CommuniCore Plaza will be located here. The plaza will feature a stage area for performances while the hall will have a demonstration kitchen and transform throughout the year with each festival. It will also house character meet and greets.

World Discovery

World Discovery explores the wonders of science and technology. This area includes popular attractions like Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, Test Track, Mission: SPACE and the new Space 220 restaurant.

Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind

This reverse launch coaster opened up in 2022. You’ll need to utilize the My Disney Experience app to ride, either by entering the virtual queue or purchasing an Individual Lightning Lane pass (think paid FastPass replacement). There is no standby line for this attraction.

World Nature

This new EPCOT neighborhood is dedicated to understanding and preserving the beauty and balance of the natural world. It includes kid-friendly attractions Turtle Talk with Crush, The Seas with Nemo & Friends, Soarin’ Around the World and the underwater Coral Reef Restaurant. A new attraction, Journey of Water, will join World Nature in late 2023.

Journey of Water – Inspired by Moana

It’s about time that Disney puts in a feature for fan-favorite Moana. This self-guided nature trail follows the story of water from sky to ocean and back.

Enjoy the night shows at Disney and keep your kids happy with light up toys. Epcot Forever debuted in October 2019.

A New Nighttime Spectacular for EPCOT

In October of 2021 EPCOT Forever was replaced by Harmonious. This large and expensive musical extravaganza combined song, language and fireworks. Barges staged in the World Showcase Lagoon held screens that LED light displays were projected onto.

Prior to that IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth, EPCOT’s long running nighttime show, ran almost exactly 20 years, ending in 2019.

EPCOT Forever has returned temporarily. Disney will be unveiling a new nighttime show for EPCOT that has not yet been named and will debut later in 2023.

Did you know that you can book a special Disney After Hours experience at EPCOT? Dates in 2023 run from June 1st to August 24th and are part of Disney’s extensive offering of add-on specialty tours.

World Showcase News

In Norway, Akershus Royal Banquet Hall is back to serving all three meals as of May 14th. Families can now book any meal period at this princess character dining experience. In Japan, Tokyo Dining will be replaced by Shiki-Sai: Sushi Izakaya this summer. It will offer a shareable Izakaya-style dining experience as a table service restaurant.

Also don’t forget to download the Play Disney Parks app. There’s a new interactive scavenger hunt with Scrooge McDuck. In Disney’s DuckTales World Showcase Adventure you’ll help find and return the 7 lost treasures to each country’s pavilion.

EPCOT Festivals in 2023

If you’re looking to hit up EPCOT’s festivals for special treats and experiences in 2023, we’ve got the dates you need to keep in mind. The EPCOT International Flower and Garden Festival will run from March 1, 2023 – July 5, 2023.

The EPCOT International Food and Wine Festival will run from July 27, 2023 – November 18, 2023. Best news? Emile’s Fromage Montage cheese crawl is back.

The last festival for 2023 is the EPCOT International Festival of the Holidays. Dates haven’t been announced for 2023 yet but it will run in November and December.

Disney’s Hollywood Studios Upgrades and Improvements

If you’re heading to Disney’s Hollywood Studios there are a few changes to report. First, Toy Story Land now has a table service restaurant – Roundup Rodeo BBQ. Serving lunch and dinner, this sit down spot is NOT a character meal. It is a family-style, all you can eat experience that is a set price per person. Check out the menu before visiting to see if it’s worth it for your family. From a decor standpoint, this eatery feels like an expanded Toy Story Mania queue.

Second, after some time without a nighttime show, Fantasmic! Returned in late 2022. Currently, two shows a night are being put on.

Ride Closures at Hollywood Studios

Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster will be closed for several months. It is slated to reopen during the summer of 2023, but no specific date is given.

Celebrate 100 Years: Goodbye Enchantment, Hello Platinum

Out with Disney’s 50th Anniversary celebration which ended in March 2023 and in with the Disney 100th Anniversary. You may be saying- What? How did they go from 50 to 100 in months? Well, the 50th Anniversary celebrated Walt Disney World. Disney100 celebrates the 100th Anniversary of the Walt Disney Company.

The celebration will contain several different elements including: favorite Disney characters Mickey and Minnie appearing in special platinum outfits; Spaceship Earth special lighting; photograph-friendly 100 backdrops in all four theme parks; character meets at the resorts; special food and drink and, of course,  exclusive merchandise.

Walt Disney World Resort: Things to Know

If you’ve been frustrated by some changes that the resorts have made in recent years you’ll be happy with these announcements. First, Disney has brought back complimentary parking for guests at Walt Disney World Resort. Parking fees were instituted back in 2018 and guests saw fees ranging from $15-25 depending on whether you were staying in a value, moderate or deluxe resort.

Ongoing Disney Resort Improvements and Refurbishments

Disney is continuously improving resorts to accommodate guests and keep things fresh. Recent refurbishments at the Disney’s Contemporary Resort, Disney’s Polynesian Resort, Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort and Disney’s Wilderness Lodge are complete. In 2023 guest rooms at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa will be updated just in time for the resort’s 35th anniversary. Refurbishments at all three All-Star Resorts will come to fruition this year.

Another fun resort addition is Hey Disney! A magical voice assistant. You can ask it when fireworks are, have it tell you jokes and more. It has rolled out at the Polynesian and will be making its way across the resort area over the year.

Disney Dining Plan is Returning for Walt Disney World Resort Guests

Starting on May 31, 2023, guests staying at Disney resort hotels can elect to add the Disney Dining Plan to their trips that start on or after January 9, 2024. After years of the Disney Dining Plan being paused, you can bet that people are excited! More information will be shared by Disney on May 31st.

To answer the most common questions we’ve heard – YES! If you have already booked a trip that starts on or after January 9, 2024, you will be able to modify that trip to add the dining plan! This means that you shouldn’t wait if you see a fantastic offer before the end of May. You can always add it later! Prices are sure to be higher when the booking window first opens up.

Guests at Disney resort property Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser don’t need to worry. This immersive experience will still include dining specific to the galaxy they’re staying in.

Two Disney Dining Plan Types

Currently two dining plan types are offered. In the past there were three levels. The Disney Quick-Service Dining Plan and the Disney Dining Plan, which includes a table service restaurants (ie. character meals). The dining plans are advertised as being a prepaid way to save up to 30% on dining at Disney. In the past there have been specials around free dining plans. Those may or may not return.

Disney Destination D23 at Contemporary Resort

It will be a bit busy on the monorail in September. Disney’s Destination D23 is being held at the Contemporary Resort from September 8, 2023-September 10, 2023. Disney reveals upcoming projects, films and more at this superfan event.

Disney Springs – New Restaurants and Stores

If you haven’t visited Disney Springs in a bit you might not recognize it! A few fun developments at Disney Springs deserve our attention.

Disney Springs Photo Pass Studio

While this spot has existed it is, in my opinion, underutilized. No reservations are required. Just check the hours and stop in to take photos for free! If you’ve got Memory Maker, the pics you take here have free unlimited downloads. If you don’t, there may be a few to download. As with other Disney photo spots you can also take images on your phone. The studio has a backdrop that changes seasonally with the holidays that are coming up (NEW) and a virtual backdrop section that allows you to pick favorite characters from Encanto, Coco and more to pose with.

Summer House on the Lake

A new restaurant, Summer House on the Lake, will be opening at Disney Springs later in 2023. It will be California-inspired and the space will also include a dessert bakery called The Cookie Jar.

Changes at Disneyland

Disney’s changes aren’t only taking place in Orlando, Florida. These new and exciting upgrades are also extending to California’s Disneyland.

New Attractions, Reopenings and Rule Changes at Disneyland in 2023

Mickey’s Toontown reopened after being closed for renovations on March 19, 2023. This reimagining added grassy spaces like CenTOONial Experience, interactive play stations and Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway (which opened in January).

Disney Vacation Club at Disneyland – Perks and a New Property

Disney Vacation Club members are excited about a new addition at Disneyland’s Tomorrowland. The new Disney Vacation Club Star View Station – a Member Lounge provides a spot for DVC members to catch their breath and relax during a busy Disney day.

Speaking of new DVC at Disneyland, a new DVC property The Villas at Disneyland Hotel, opened for sale to existing members on May 2. Purchase will be open to the general public for purchase on May 30th, 2023. It’s slated to open on September 28, 2023.

After years of requests, Disney is bringing its MagicBand+ tech to the cruising world. On DCL it will be called DisneyBand+. The bands will be able to unlock room doors, link photos, find magic moments and check kids into the kids’ club.

We have a new ship, the Disney Treasure, to look forward to. It will join Disney’s current fleet which is made up of the Disney Magic, Disney Wish, Disney Wonder, Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy.

In other exciting news, a second Disney island destination is being added in June 2024. Lighthouse Point, on the southern tip of Eleuthera Bahamas, joins Castaway Cay as an exclusive Disney cruise stop.

Annual Pass Sales at Disney are Back

After a long pause, Disney Annual Pass sales are back in multiple forms. If you’ve been waiting to buy a pass, now is your chance.

In addition, restrictions on reservations with passes have been lifted and passholders can now visit without reservations after 2 pm, excluding Magic Kingdom on Saturdays and Sundays. Disney is also working on rolling out “good to go” days where passholders and cast members can visit all day without having a reservation.

Visiting Disney with a baby, toddler or even a slightly bigger kiddo? Work a stroller into your plans! Now you need to figure out: Do I want to bring my own stroller or should I rent a stroller at Disney? We’re going to lay out everything you need to know about renting strollers at Disney (including resort drop off changes) and what you need to know about renting vs. bringing your own stroller.

Renting a Stroller at Disney World or Disneyland

When traveling with infants, babies or toddlers, a stroller at Disney is a necessity. Disney parks are large and require a lot of walking. Even the walk from the park to the hotel or parking garage can be too much for tired kids (and adults!) at the end of a magical day.

You’ll even want a stroller outside the Walt Disney World parks! The Disney resorts in Orlando Florida are large and sprawling. A walk from the bus station to the hotel room or from the room to the dining hall can be exhausting for youngsters.

And while Disneyland has a smaller footprint, I’ve always used a stroller there for my little kids too. Strollers can make navigating the Disney parks easier, especially at the end of a long and busy day with a baby or toddler at Disneyland.

When packing before my Disney trips, I’ve gone back and forth on whether to bring or rent a stroller there and what kind of stroller to use. Here are four options to consider:

  • bring your own
  • rent one at the park
  • use an Orlando area rental service
  • buy a cheap umbrella stroller once you arrive or to deliver from Amazon.

Below are some tips, links and options to consider when it comes to strollers at Disney parks.

Bringing Your Own Stroller to Disney

Bringing your own stroller is the most affordable option. It can provide your child with a familiar napping place as well as a comfortable spot to rest. There are several benefits to packing your own stroller and a few things to consider beforehand.

If bringing a stroller from home, you might be tempted to bring a more durable jogging stroller. Do remember that strollers will need to be folded before boarding Disney transportation. Therefore, you’ll want to have something quick and easy to collapse. Plus, you’ll be wrangling your kids along with the stroller AND  there isn’t a place to store your stroller on the Disney buses except between seats (if the area is free). You’ll still need to keep a hand on it to ensure it doesn’t fall and hit someone.

Transportation to Disney can also play a role in your decision. Getting from the Orlando Airport to Disney World can be complicated. If you’re planning to catch an Uber, you may not want to have a stroller which could require you to book a more expensive Uber X or Uber XL ride.

What Strollers are NOT Allowed at Disney?

If you’re flying to Orlando or Anaheim, you’ll want to bring a stroller that can be gate checked. Start by checking your airline’s restrictions. Not all strollers (especially larger double strollers) will meet the height and weight limits for gate checking.

Disney parks also have their own size limitations and restrictions on strollers. Strollers larger than 31″ x 52″ are not permitted. Stroller wagons are also not allowed within the parks.

There is an exception to this rule regarding stroller size and type, specifically for those who use a stroller as a medical device. Those who qualify with special needs can speak to guest services. They may be able to apply for a special pass that will be tagged on the stroller.

Double Strollers that Meet Disney Size Rules

The following double stroller models meet Disney’s stroller size restrictions:

  • Baby Jogger Summit XT Double 31″ wide by 46″ long
  • Joovy Caboose 2 21.25″ wide by 38″ long (a popular sit n’ stand option when you have a baby and an older child)
  • Valco Snap Duo Trend 29″ wide by 32″ long

Where to Rent Strollers at Disney World

Strollers are available to rent at various locations throughout the Disney parks and the Disney Springs area. There’s no stroller rental at Downtown Disney in California. It’s easiest to find rental locations via the Disney app.

At Walt Disney World Stroller Rental locations are:

  • Magic Kingdom – inside the front train station as you enter the park
  • Animal Kingdom – on the right immediately through the entrance at Garden Gate Gifts
  • Hollywood Studios – on the right immediately through the entrance at Oscar’s Super Service
  • EPCOT offers two rental locations – the World Traveler shop near the International Gateway entrance and Stroller and Wheelchair Rentals to the left of Spaceship Earth (the giant silver ball).
  • Disney Springs – at Sundries, located near the Orange garage.

Disneyland shares a stroller rental location with Disney California Adventure. It s located outside the theme parks, just east of the Disneyland Park Main Entrance.

If you’re staying at a Disneyland resort hotel, featured provider ScooterBug can arrange length-of-stay rentals. The company offers strollers, ECVs and wheelchairs that will be delivered to your hotel.

Should You Rent Strollers At Disney Parks?

The hard plastic strollers in Orlando aren’t fashionable or comfortable, but they do come with a shade awning. Strollers in California are fabric, jogger-style (check them out in the picture above).

Neither Disney stroller model is appropriate for newborns or infants. If you are traveling with a very young baby, you’re better off bringing your own stroller or renting from a third party company.

Cost of Renting a Disney Stroller

At Disneyland single strollers are $18 a day and double strollers are $36 a day. Pricing at Walt Disney World is $15 per day for a single stroller or $31 for a double. Multi-day length of stay discounts are available.

You’ll want to keep your receipt in a safe, dry place to show proof of payment each day. Make sure to arrive early to accommodate the extra time it will take to rent and pick up your stroller.

Stroller rentals at Disney Springs require a $100 credit card deposit. You won’t find strollers for rent in the water parks or at the resorts. Also, strollers have to remain in the area where they were rented. This means you won’t have the stroller for long walks back to the bus, through the hotel or for exploring your resort or off-property areas.

SheBuysTravel Tip: If you’re Park Hopping, just show your day’s rental receipt at the second theme park and receive a stroller to use there. That means you can “hop” to multiple theme parks and only pay once to rent a stroller.

Renting From a Third Party Stroller Provider at Disney World

Renting from a third party company will allow your family to take the stroller anywhere (including outside the parks) for about the same cost as a Disney park stroller rental. Costs may vary slightly between companies and stroller models but most offer free delivery. For families on a multi-day Disney vacation, the cost to rent outside of the resort can be a considerable savings.

Most of the third party companies have featured strollers that are jogging-style (like the City Mini pictured in this section). They offer plenty of storage underneath and sunshade awnings.

I’ve used several of these companies myself, always with positive results.

  • Kingdom Strollers: (407) 271-5301 (free rain cover, parent console/drink holder cooler bag and the strollers can be picked up and returned at the Orlando airport)
  • Orlando Stroller Rentals: (800) 281-0884
  • Amusement Park Rentals (407) 442-0000
  • Magic Strollers: (866) 866-6177
Wondering what to do about strollers at Disney parks? If you're planning a Disneyland or Disney World vacation here are all the tips you need on whether to bring your own, rent at the Disney parks, buy new or rent from a third party.

Renting a Third Party Stroller at Disneyland

There are fewer stroller rental services in the Anaheim area, perhaps because so many visitors to Disneyland are locals who bring their own strollers. If you require a stroller rental while visiting the Disneyland area, SheBuysTravel recommends City Stroller Rentals, (877) 787-5537.

Buying a New Stroller at Disney

Most visitors will either bring their own or rent strollers at Disney. But perhaps you hadn’t thought about buying a new one at your destination? Some Disney parks and shops on-property have an umbrella-style stroller for purchase. I found the strollers pictured below at the entrance to Disneyland in California. Purchasing a stroller outright can be less expensive than renting.

If you’re heading to a local store in the area (like Target or Walmart), consider picking up an inexpensive stroller to use on your trip. Or have a stroller shipped directly to your Disney hotel (there may be a package delivery fee; check with your hotel on their policies for shipments). After your trip, you can choose to bring the stroller home with you or leave it behind for another family to use.

Double Strollers & Tips for Twins

If you’re traveling with two (or more!) small children or twins, you’ll likely want to have a double stroller to use in the Disney parks. Here are a few tips to keep in mind whether you plan on bringing your double stroller from home, renting at the parks or renting from a third party company.

  • If you’re flying in, you’ll want to bring a stroller that is also allowed to be gate checked, so you should start by checking your airline’s restrictions first. Not all double strollers meet the height and weight limits.
  • Do remember you’ll have to fold and carry your stroller when going on and off the transportation to local area hotels. A double stroller is going to be extra bulky and heavy.
  • The thought of folding and carrying a deluxe double stroller while also corralling twin toddlers may seem more trouble than it is worth. You may choose to opt for a more flimsy, but easier-to-handle double umbrella stroller. It may not be as smooth to push around, but it’s definitely lighter and less of a hassle.
  • Rather than packing a double stroller, consider bringing or renting two individual lightweight strollers. This situation may work best if you’re traveling with extra adults who can help with carrying kids while other adults fold up and carry the strollers.

Add Personal Flair to Your Stroller for Easier Viewing

There is ample designated stroller parking areas near almost every attraction in the Disney parks. There are even “Stroller Parking” areas. Cast members will rearrange the parked strollers as people leave and new ones get dropped off. This rearrangement can make it difficult for you to locate your stroller.

I’ve never been worried about anyone taking my stroller. However, it’s a good idea to mark your stroller so that no one will mistake it as their own. This is especially important if you are renting a stroller from the park, since all of those strollers look alike.

The rental companies will give you a nameplate with your family name written on it, but adding a ribbon or other personal flair will still make it easier to spot from a distance.

  • Use a colorful luggage tag with your name on it.
  • Weave colored ribbons on the handle bars.
  • Clip a travel bottle of hand sanitizer on the stroller for family members to use after going on the rides and before snacking.
  • After nightfall, loop glow-in-the-dark bracelets onto your stroller handle for easier tracking in the dark.

The last few years have brought quite a few changes to the way we travel; traveling to the “Happiest Place on Earth” is no exception. Gone are the days of Disney’s free Magical Express service, leaving many families (mine included) searching for new ways to get from the Orlando International Airport to the Walt Disney Resort in Florida.

We have visited the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida many times over the years and have tried just about every form of transportation for our round-trip journey to our Disney hotel. We’ve been on Mears Connect, the Magical Express, taken an Uber and rented a car.

Each mode of transportation comes with its own pros and cons. Uber & Lyft can be pricey, and if you arrive at a busy time, there may be a wait to get a car. Renting a car also can be expensive, especially when you factor in the cost of parking at Disney hotels and the theme parks. Plus, there’s the added stress of navigating an unfamiliar freeway network and possibly waiting at toll booths.

On a recent Disney vacation, The Sunshine Flyer hosted my husband so we could get a first-hand look at this new mode of airport transportation to Walt Disney World.

What’s So Great about The Sunshine Flyer?

The Sunshine Flyer is a premium motor coach bus experience designed to transport travelers from the Orlando airport to hotels on Disney property.

The motor coach design is inspired by rail travel, with the buses painted to look like old-fashioned passenger cars and bus drivers dressed as train conductors.

For me, there were a few factors that made The Sunshine Flyer shuttle service stand out from other transportation management services.

1. Vintage Theme

First on that list is the theming. Even though we were traveling without kids, I really enjoyed the rail-themed experience. The employees were extremely friendly and eager to chat with waiting travelers.

My kids would have absolutely LOVED it when they were younger.

2. Photo Opp

Each of the locomotive and rail-car-themed buses has a different name and a bit of personality too! Our bus was decorated to look like a bright green train engine and was called the Komodo Dragon.

As we waited, I noticed the kids point out each of the different bus themes as they pulled up and guess which bus they would get. Many of them posed for photos as they got on the bus.

All of this combined to give us the feeling that our vacation had already started, which is a welcome change from the chaos of the airport!

3.  Friendly, Professional Service

The third thing that stuck out to me was the level of service and organization. All of the employees were very helpful, and the boarding process was smooth and precise.

Right now, your journey begins at the check-in podium. Inside counter space is coming soon! Photo credit: Melissa Mortenson

After you check in (outside for now, but they will be moving to an inside counter space soon), you move to a waiting area (we were only in the waiting area for 15 minutes). Then as buses arrive, the conductors announce which resort the bus is going to. If a bus is going to more than one resort, they announce them one at a time, so there is not a mad rush to the bus or congestion.

The staff loads the bags onto the bus for you and removes them when you reach your final destination. The entire process was quite seamless.

As we approached WDW, the staff made sure to let us know when we were approaching the famous Mickey welcome sign so that we could have our cameras ready.

I’m a bit of a nervous traveler and always like to get to the airport much more than two hours before our flight (especially in Orlando, which can be so busy). I was a bit apprehensive since The Sunshine Flyer set the pickup time at our hotel.

The morning of our departure, they were precisely on time, and we arrived at the airport with plenty of time to spare.

Are There Any Downsides to the Service?

Like other bus transportation options, The Sunshine Flyer drops off at multiple hotels, so there may be a bit of a wait if your hotel is one of the later drop-offs.

The only way to ensure a direct drop-off is to book a private car.

How Does The Sunshine Compare with the Magical Express?

I noticed a few minor differences, but overall it is a very similar experience to Disney’s Magical Express, the bus service that previously was included for guests staying “on property” at Disney World hotels. The Sunshine Flyer has a different “feel” than the Magical Express did. The employees are cheerful and helpful and spend a lot of time talking to those waiting for a bus.

Our experience with Magical Express drivers was always excellent. On The Sunshine Flyer, I noticed the staff really took their job as “rail conductors” seriously, which added to the fun atmosphere.

Commonly Asked Questions about the Service

Where Does The Sunshine Pick Up at MCO?

The Sunshine Flyer picks up from Terminal B, Level One, at the Orlando International Airport (MCO). Expect to get a confirmation email from The Sunshine Flyer a few days before your vacation directing you to the exact pickup location at the airport.

If you arrive at another terminal, simply pick up your bags from baggage claim and take the elevator up to the departure level. Look for the sign for Terminal B. Walk into Terminal B, then take the elevator down to Level One.

When we got off the elevator at Level One, employees from The Sunshine Flyer directed us to the motor coaches. Note that an inside counter check-in location is coming soon.

How Long Does The Sunshine Flyer Take to Get to Disney?

It took us about 40 minutes to get to our Walt Disney World Resort hotel from the airport. Orlando traffic can be pretty busy at certain times of the day, so it may take longer if there is an incident on the freeway or if you arrive during rush hour.

Are There Bathrooms on The Sunshine Flyer Buses?

Yes, there is a bathroom at the back of the premium motor coaches.

During busy times, The Sunshine Flyer uses passenger vans to handle the increased number of travelers. Those do not have a bathroom.

Which Disney World Hotels Does It Serve?

The Sunshine Flyer serves almost all Walt Disney World resort hotels (including value resort hotels like the Pop Century Resort and deluxe hotels like the Grand Floridian & Boardwalk). There is a full list of the hotels served on the website.

Does The Sunshine Flyer Accommodate Wheelchairs?

Yes, you need to make sure when you book your journey that you indicate that you need ADA-accessible transportation for a wheelchair.

How Do I Book the Sunshine Flyer?

Visit SunshineFlyer.com, and click BOOK NOW. Choose one-way or round-trip travel and enter your flight info. Follow the prompts on the screen to finish your reservation.

You will receive an email confirmation.

A day or two before you depart your Disney hotel for your return trip to the airport, you will receive an email (we also got a text) from The Sunshine Flyer noting your pick-up time.

Final Thoughts

Our experience with The Sunshine Flyer was smooth, friendly and seamless.

It was the first time in a while that we did not rent a car in Orlando. Knowing that someone else was taking care of the driving made a considerable difference to us (especially to my husband, who does not like to drive in unfamiliar cities).

We did not have to worry about when to leave for the airport or wait in line at a rental car terminal.

We would absolutely book The Sunshine Flyer again.

Looking to step up your Walt Disney World vacation? Add a Disney MagicBand or a new MagicBand+ to it! We explain everything you need to know about Disney MagicBands from where to buy them to how to add them to your Disney account to what they can do. We’ll also share some alternatives to the traditional wristband that work with your Apple Watch or as a pendant.

Keeping travel to Disney organized can be tricky. There are a lot of moving parts. A trip for my family means keeping track of Disney park tickets, hotel room keys, Lightning Lane reservations, dining reservations, and more.

But Disney has sprinkled some pixie dust on its visitors, in the form of the Disney MagicBand. It’s so much easier to keep everything organized when it’s all strapped to your wrist in a cute little band.

Have questions about how Disney MagicBands work? I’m an expert — I currently have 11 bands in my account! Let me share what I know. I’m sure you’ll agree that Disney MagicBands make travel organization easier, which makes Disney World even happier than before!

SheBuysTravel Tip: You can now book Disney vacations up to 500 days in advance! That means you can book now for visits throughout 2023. All it takes is a $200 down payment. The balance isn’t due until 30 days prior to travel. You can get details on this, as well as help booking, from our partners at Get Away Today. Not only does the company have the lowest prices, it offers a best price guarantee. If you ever find park tickets cheaper, Get Away Today won’t just match the price, the company will beat it.

What is a MagicBand and Why Do I Need One?

A MagicBand is a colorful wristband that really lives up to its name. It works magic during a Walt Disney World vacation! These little all-in-one devices make life easier by storing park tickets, Disney hotel check-in information, room key and more, all in one place. They’re invaluable if you are staying at a Walt Disney World resort in Orlando.

SheBuysTravel Tip: Disney MagicBands are only good at Walt Disney World in Orlando. Disneyland and the other Disney parks do not use the bands.

Do I Need a MagicBand if I’m Not Staying at a Disney Hotel?

Even if you’re staying “off property” in a non-Disney hotel, you’ll want a Disney MagicBand, because it electronically connects to the vacation plans you’ve made in your My Disney Experience Account.

In fact, this connection may be the most important function of the MagicBand. The wristband replaces paper tickets and the old paper FastPasses (now Genie+ and Lightning Lane). Once connected, it acts as your ticket to the Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Disney’s Animal Kingdom, and Disney’s Hollywood Studios. It is convenient to have a MagicBand vs having to dig for a ticket/card, especially if you’re using Lightning Lanes where you’ll have to scan twice.

MagicBand vs. MagicBand+: What’s the Difference?

With the introduction of Disney’s MagicBand+ people are naturally curious about the difference. What comes with the higher price tag?

MagicBand+ bands are capable of interactions. You’ll have the option to participate in experiences and interact with in-park objects. The bands light up, use haptic vibrations and immerse you in the parks. Be a bounty hunter in Galaxy’s Edge or interact with a Disney 50th Anniversary statue.

Regular MagicBands are still a great option though.

Are MagicBands Going Away?

There were some rumblings about MagicBands ending when Disney MagicMobile came out. Those mostly ended when MagicBand+ was introduced. Obviously Disney isn’t going to put out upgrades if it is discontinuing an item.

Disney has said that MagicBands will continue to be available for purchase and new designs will continue to be released. You may be asking, “How do I get in without a MagicBand?” Key to the World cards are available for all guests.

However, a new park entry option called MagicMobile has been introduced that will allow you to use your Apple phone or watch.

screenshots of My Disney Experience Magic Mobile instructions
Wondering how Disney’s MagicMobile works? Here’s how it can replace your MagicBand. Photo Credit: Screenshots of MyDisneyExperience App

What is MagicMobile?

MagicMobile is a park entry option that lets you use your Apple or Android device for park entry. Here’s how it works.

  • First, you’ll need to have the My Disney Experience app on your phone. If you’ve installed it in the past be sure to run the update.
  • Open the My Disney Experience app and sign into your account. Hit the hamburger (stacked line) menu on the bottom right. In the right column you’ll  see the Disney MagicMobile Pass as an option.
  • Once you’re into the Disney MagicMobile section you’ll be able to link up your park reservations/tickets and create a MagicMobile pass.
  • After creating your pass you’ll be able to save it to your device. Then you’ll just scan your device at the entrance to the parks.
  • You can utilize MagicBands, MagicMobile passes and Key to the World cards interchangeably.

Are MagicBands Free?

Not anymore. MagicBands used to be free to resort guests but that ended in 2020. Functionalities of the bands (opening doors, paying for food, park entry) are now available in the My Disney Experience app.

You can still add a MagicBand to your room but you will have to pay for it. This does give you the opportunity to be more creative with your bands. If you choose to get one, get a fun one!

How Does a MagicBand Work?

You’ll have to set up a free My Disney Experience account. That’s where you can link your park tickets. No more fumbling for tickets at the park entrance. Now your tickets and attraction choices are recorded in the MDE app and saved to the radio frequency (RF) chip inside your MagicBands.

When you get to the theme parks, simply touch your MagicBand to Mickey’s head at the entrance (known as “touchpoints”), and enjoy your day at the park!

When You Aren’t at Disney

Rev up the excitement for an impending Disney trip or extend the magic with Disney crafts and Disney at home activities:

  • Sprinkle Pixie Dust on Your Kids’ Crafting with These Disney Craft Ideas
  • Virtual Rides, Imagineer Secrets and More

Do MagicBands Work with Disney PhotoPass and Memory Maker?

Everyone with a MagicBand receives one other major perk: Your MagicBand contains your PhotoPass and MemoryMaker information. PhotoPass is the complimentary photo service throughout the Disney resorts, theme parks, water parks, and Disney Springs.

Professional photographers capture your Disney memories – for free. After the photographer takes the photos of you and your family, he or she will scan your MagicBand to — magically — link those photos to your My Disney Experience account.

At the end of the trip, you can choose the photos you want to buy. But I recommend pre-purchasing a MemoryMaker, which provides unlimited digital access to all of the PhotoPass videos and photos linked to your MagicBand. You can download the ones you like once you’re back at home, or you can order prints from Disney at a discount.

Does a MagicBand Work as a Room Key?

No need to rummage through your purse while juggling a sleeping toddler and his Mickey Mouse plush. Simply touch your MagicBand to the reader on your hotel room door to open the door.

Easy peasy!

Extra MagicBand Perks for Disney World Hotels

If you’re staying at a Disney World hotel — “on property” in Disney parlance — there are some extra special perks. Use your MagicBand as your room key, making purchases, and manage your Disney Dining Plan.

Can I Use a MagicBand to Buy Things?

If you want to charge a purchase at one of the parks to your room, you can do it using your MagicBand. Simply link a credit card to the band, and your purchases will be added to your hotel bill.

And don’t worry about other members of your party charging to your card. You can specify “adults only” charging privileges, or create a PIN to share only with those allowed to use your card.

Does a MagicBand Work with the Disney Dining Plan?

Disney Dining Plans are currently unavailable, but in the past, the Disney Dining Plan was only available to visitors who buy it as part of a Disney vacation package — and stay at a Disney hotel. Then, you use your MagicBand to keep track of Disney Dining Plan credits, too. Simply scan your band to use the credits.

At the table service restaurants, the server will bring a machine to your table. At quick service and snack spots, touch your MagicBand to the touchpoint and your Dining Plan credits will be used to pay for your purchase.

How Do I Get a MagicBand?

At this point, you may have a hard time imagining your Disney vacation without a MagicBand. The convenience of all that power right on your wrist is irresistible. So how do you get a MagicBand?

Even if you are not staying at a Disney resort, you can – and should – purchase a MagicBand. They’re available at a variety of price points, based on the customization you choose. MagicBands can be linked to your park tickets (purchased separately) through the My Disney Experience app.

MagicBands also can be purchased online, from the Disney Store app, at the theme parks, from select stores in the resort hotels, or at Disney Springs.

SheBuysTravel Tip: Buy your MagicBands before leaving home, so you can do link it to your My Disney Experience account before you leave for your trip. That way, you won’t be using valuable vacation time to set everything up, and you’ll be ready to go once you reach the parks. Plus it’s really exciting to have the wristbands before you leave your driveway!

Can I Customize My MagicBands?

Yes! You can definitely customize your MagicBand, there’s a whole new world of variety to choose from. Choose to purchase a premium MagicBand, featuring special colors like turquoise or millennial pink or favorite characters, from the Frozen sisters to the Star Wars favorites, and of course Mickey Mouse. You can even find special edition MagicBands on Amazon, and skins and decals for your MagicBand on Etsy and other sites. Annual passholders can also choose from special designs only available to APs.

The second generation of MagicBand – known as MagicBand 2 – are a little larger than the first version. These come with removable center Mickey icons, so you can mix and match the colors to really personalize your bands. MagicBandits – little images, shapes and jewels – are also available to allow for further customization.

Check out these MagicBand holders that easily fits on your Apple Watch or other watch bands:

Does One Size Fit All?

I don’t ever believe “one size fits all,” and I had serious doubts that a wristband that fits the tiniest toddler would feel comfortable on me. But Disney magic comes through again!

Yes, all Disney MagicBands come in one standard size, but it is made in two layers – a tearaway outer shell layer surrounding a smaller inner layer. Just peel away the outer shell to create a band for smaller wrists.

On the band itself, you’ll see “peel here for a smaller band.” (Just be sure you want to do this, as the layer cannot be reattached.) Both layers have several holes to allow for different sizes of band to further customize the fit.

What Happens if I Lose My Disney MagicBand?

MagicBands can be deactivated right on the My Disney Experience app or by visiting Disneyworld.com and going to “Manage My MagicBands.” Simply click on the band you want to deactivate or report lost.

If you lose a band while on your Disney vacation, you should go to Guest Relations to speak to a cast member. Or if you’re a hotel guest, the concierge at the front desk at your Walt Disney World Resort Hotel can help deactivate a missing MagicBand and activate a new one.

How Long Is a MagicBand Good?

MagicBands and MagicBandPlus remain active even after your Florida Disney vacation is over. That’s good news. It means you can reuse any of your old MagicBands. So bring several, especially if you have a variety!

Whether you have one or many, Disney MagicBands make organizing your vacation so much easier. Everything you need is in one place, right on your wrist. That way, you can grasp the magic of your Disney vacation with both hands!

If you’ve heard about Disney pin trading but haven’t tried it yet, get ready for the thrill of the hunt! Here’s everything you need to know to get started: what Disney pin trading is, how to start your Disney pin collection, the do’s and don’ts of pin trading and tips for displaying your collection. Be warned! Disney pin trading might become an obsession…in the very best Disney magic kind of way!

Disney Pin Trading: A Fun Add-On to Your Vacation

As your kids grow in age, chances are they’ll also grow out of the typical Disney souvenirs. Now that my kids are older, they’ve outgrown many of the souvenirs offered in the Disney World shops and the Disney Store. In fact, on my last Disney trip, the only souvenirs my kids asked me to bring back were pins.

I was happy to do it. Disney pins are small, so they fit easily into carry-on luggage. They’re relatively inexpensive, and there are tons of pins available at shops throughout the Disney parks, in Disney Springs and at the Disney Store.

In fact, I was amazed at the wide variety of pin styles and characters. Hunting for the specific ones my kids wanted was a lot of fun. Then I discovered pin trading; it added a whole new dimension to my souvenir hunt.

SheBuysTravel Tip: You can now book Disney vacations up to 500 days in advance! That means you can book now for visits in 2023.

What is Disney Pin Trading?

Disney pin trading is exactly what it sounds like: the ability to swap pins with someone else. Pin trading has changed a little bit since Disney reopened after their Covid closure but it’s almost back to normal. You won’t see cast members with pins on their lanyards like before but we’ve seen pin trading boards return to most shops, now they just have numbers to identify each pin.

Although you might not find as many pin trading boards – super high touch areas – you might see other guests who are obviously pin traders. Pin traders will have visible lanyards or other containers – a popular one is a wearable pin wallet that looks like a little purse. It’s up to you whether you approach them as individuals and ask to pin trade.

In a non-Covid world, there were Disney cast members walking around the park wearing pin lanyards. Their job was to trade pins with guests. At Disney World, a green lanyard means that cast member will only trade with kids. At Disneyland, the kid-only lanyards are teal. Any other color lanyard is fair game for everyone. Cast members who trade only with kids often have a better selection of pins since their trading pool is more limited.

Pin Trading Rules

In general, pin trading rules are simple:

  • Pins must be authentic metal pins stamped with “©Disney” on the back
  • They must be in good shape.
  • Pins must have an authentic Disney Mickey Mouse ear backing.
  • Whether to trade is your choice; cast members must agree to trade any official Disney pin you request.
  • Pin trading is intended to be free; you should never pay to trade a Disney pin.
  • The only pins cast members will not trade are award or service pins and personalized name pins.
  • Pin trading etiquette says you should not touch any of the cast member’s pins. Just point to the one you want and the cast member will remove it and hand it to you.

When You Aren’t at Disney

Rev up the excitement for an impending Disney trip or extend the magic after a Disney vacation with these Disney recipes, Disney crafts and Disney at home activities:

How Did Pin Trading Start?

Pin trading began at Walt Disney World during the Millennium Celebration in 1999. It has since spread to many other Disney locations. You can now trade Disney pins at Disneyland Resort, Disneyland Paris, Aulani and even on Disney cruises.

Why Trade Pins?

Many different series of pins have been released over the years, and there are some serious collectors out there. But for most people, pin trading is just a fun way to meet and interact with cast members and for kids to bring back souvenirs that have extra meaning and stories attached to them.

On my trip, I began my Disney pin trading experience with a “magical moment” at the Coronado Springs resort gift shop. One of the cast members gave me a Donald Duck mosaic pin. I then traded my way through Hollywood Studios until I found a pin that I liked too much to trade for anything else. I was almost disappointed, since the fun is in the trading.

First Time Pin Trading Tips

Here are a few pin trading tips that I learned my first time pin trading at Disney:

Start Before Your Disney Vacation

To be able to trade up for the pins your kids really want, you need to have some pins to trade. So start with inexpensive pins. Look online at eBay where you’ll find lots of Disney pin traders offering bags of “mystery pins” for just a few bucks. Just make sure the pins you buy are authentic Disney pins with the Mickey Mouse backing.

SheBuysTravel Tip: We’ve found a TON of cool pins from Disney Parks all over the world at the Disney Character Warehouse outlet locations in Orlando. If you have time check them out!

Look for Pin Trading Cast Members

Some cast members wear the lanyards, others wear their pin collection on cards around their waists. Tell the cast member which pin you want and he or she will remove it and hand it to you. Hand over your pin with the back attached to it. The cast member will put it on her lanyard and move on to trade with the next person.

SheBuysTravel Tip: Headed to EPCOT? There are pin trading boards at each of the Kidcot Fun Stops in each country. We’ve found some unique pins there as they aren’t as heavily trafficked! Also don’t forget to check the gift shop boards in EPCOT.

Display Your Disney Pin in the Parks

Disney-themed lanyards are available at most souvenir shops in the theme parks. Pin books and bags are also available to contain your growing collection. Or you can get creative – I saw pins on shirts, vests, even hats while walking through Magic Kingdom. My kids like to wear theirs on purses or jackets to show off their collections.

Build Disney Pin Sets

Disney offers lots of pin designs. There are mystery sets too. New pins are released regularly and Disney comes out with special pins for special events and movie openings. Many of the Disney pins available for trading are not available for sale; pin trading is the only way to get them.

Watch Your Backs

Disney pins come with a Mickey-shaped rubber backing that stays on fairly well in normal circumstances. You can also buy pin backs in other fun shapes and colors. Keep a close eye on your pins – we’ve lost several over the years. They got knocked off from my kids’ clothing or purses. If there are pins you really value and don’t want to lose, get locking pin backs to help ensure they stay in place.

Set Up a Disney Pin Sorting System

SheBuysTravel writer Nasreen Stump gets almost as excited about pin trading as her kids. One lesson she learned the hard way is to have separate storage for those “keeper” pins. “I found a Disney armadillo pin,” she told us. “It’s the only one I’ve ever seen. I traded for it but made the mistake of putting it in our main pin bag. One of the kids traded it away.” Ouch. She suggests zippered keychain bags to sort pins. Designating one color as “no-trades” and one as “trade these they aren’t special” makes decisions easier!
