I’ve seen countless ads for Sandals vacations – the images of happy, beautiful couples clasping hands, clinking glasses, and barefoot toes in snow-white sand – and I would always say to myself, “Someday, we’re going to do that.” In this case, my travel dreams turned into a reality and I had the opportunity to visit Sandals Royal Curaçao with my husband.

Was it everything the advertisements made it out to be?

The writer was hosted by Sandals.

Getting to Sandals Royal Curaçao

You can’t miss the sign in the Curacao airport. Photo credit: Jill Robbins
  • The Curaçao International Airport (CUR) has flights to and from North and South America, Europe and other Caribbean islands.
  • We flew on Delta with a stopover in Atlanta. Our flight from Atlanta took about four hours.
  • Complimentary airport transfers included; there’s an easy-to-find Sandals desk in the airport. Just check in there and you’ll be directed to your bus.
  • The return trip is equally straightforward, although with a more sad trombone feeling.

Where is Curaçao Anyway?

  • Located 40 miles off Venezuela’s North coast, Curaçao is part of what’s known as the “ABC Islands:” Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao.

  • All three ABC islands are constituent countries of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, so if you speak Dutch, here’s your chance to practice it.

Accommodations

Resort hotel room with brown marble floors and blue and brown tropical decor
Our room was spacious, quiet and well-decorated without being fussy. Photo credit: Jill Robbins
  • We stayed in a spacious club-level ocean-view room with a balcony.
  • The club-level amenities included a mini bar, room service and a dedicated lounge with access to special concierge services for making dining and spa reservations.
  • The big perk of club-level was having an expedited check-in and check-out. We did not take advantage of any of the other services but we enjoyed the room, which was spacious with light and airy tropical-themed decor.
  • Wanna splurge? There are swankier, more spacious and more secluded rooms on the property, many with swim-up pool patios or private pools.

SheBuysTravel Tip: If you’re looking for seclusion and some extra sizzle, consider upgrading to one of the butler suites. You’ll enjoy enhanced service and your own pool area.

Dining

Two shrimp bao buns on a plate
These tempura bao buns were so much fun: pillowy, crunchy goodness with spicy sauce. Photo credit: Jill Robbins
  • Sandals Royal Curaçao is an all-inclusive resort and yes, all-inclusive really does mean all-inclusive when it comes to dining.
  • There are eight restaurants, numerous bars – we never had to look far to find a drink – and a food truck park. We did our best to sample everything in a five-day stay but didn’t quite hit all the eateries.
  • I cannot recommend the food truck park enough and I’d happily eat the shrimp tempura bao buns every day if I could.
  • No reservations needed, except for Butch’s, the resort’s chop house, and Vincent, named for Vincent Van Gogh.

Favorites

I didn’t have a bad meal during my stay but aside from the shrimp bao buns at food truck Toteki, I had a couple of other favorites:

  • The pizza at Pietra Italian was delicious. It’s only available during certain hours and yes, it is worth scheduling your day around.
  • Kanaal wine bar/cafe serves Starbucks-style coffee, gelato and pastries but what I loved best was the cheese case. They had a stellar selection of Dutch cheeses, some I’d enjoyed before and some fun new-to-me cheeses.

Eating Downtown

  • Sandals Royal Curaçao has a partnership with a handful of restaurants in Willemstad that allows resort guests to experience the culinary talents of local chefs – it’s a fantastic way to get a sense of place.
  • A dining credit plus transfers come with certain room categories, so check when you reserve to see if you qualify for this perk. Sandals staff can also make recommendations on what to try off the resort.
  • The resort food was excellent but I recommend making some time to leave the bubble and sample some local flavor.

Amenities (AKA What’s Really Included)

Grab a bike and ride around the resort. They’re included in your room price. Photo credit: Jill Robbins
  • Aside from the food, pretty much everything is included at a Sandals Resort! I’m always sort of suspicious of all-inclusive packages because I’m waiting for a bill at the end for stuff I thought was free but there was no catch here.
  • All alcohol – yes, really.
  • Activities, like lawn games, pool games and pickleball.
  • Snorkeling and equipment.
  • Scuba for certified divers – more on that in a minute.
  • Bikes to explore the resort.
  • Fitness center.
  • Nightly entertainment, such as music and dance parties.
  • Airport transfers.
  • Taxes and gratuities.
  • Wi-Fi – the resort WiFi was very fast and reliable.

Open air bar with wood ceiling and white furniture
We loved this open-air bar at the resort’s center and spent a lot of time here. It was tropical and breezy but managed to feel a bit like a library in a really good way. Photo credit: Sandals

Not included:

  • Spa treatments
  • Boutique/gift shop
  • Photos
  • Excursions/tours

Scuba diving at Sandals Royal Curaçao

Couple scuba diving under water
They say pictures or it didn’t happen! Photo credit: Our dive instructor, Corwin
  • Diving (+ all equipment) is included at all Sandals resorts for PADI-certified divers.
  • Certification and additional dives available for an additional fee.
  • They also offer SNUBA – sort of a cross between snorkeling and scuba – for a fee. We didn’t try it but I’m kind of curious about it now.

Diving Instruction at Sandals Royal Curaçao

Scuba lessons! By the way, this is very heavy until you get into the water. Photo credit: Sandals
  • My husband and I got our scuba certification while staying at the resort.
  • There’s an online component that must be done at home before the in-water training can happen at the resort.
  • It’s doable to get certified during a resort stay if you’re prepared to make diving instruction the focus of your trip – some adjustment of departure times might be needed since there are restrictions on flying after a dive, which you’ll learn in training!

Overall Impressions and Would I Go Back?

Couple sitting by a blue pool at night
My husband and I found this to be a low-key experience overall, which we loved. We are early-to-bed people. Photo credit: Jill Robbins
  • A pretty easy tropical couple’s getaway that met or exceeded expectations.
  • Zero hidden charges.
  • The food and accommodations were A+ and the resort had a quiet, relaxed energy that I found restful and dare I say – romantic?
  • I would stay at a Sandals resort again and I’d stay at this resort again. Warm weather and relaxed energy where I don’t have to make too many decisions is my jam.

Potential Negatives

Beach with beach chairs and grass umbrellas
The beach area – if it looks familiar from the photo above, this was also where we did part of our scuba instruction – is not huge but we were happy with it. Photo credit: Jill Robbins
  • I found the nightlife vibe of the resort very chill. I loved that for me but those who crave major party energy may find Sandals Royal Curaçao sleepy. I saw mostly couples who kept to themselves and things got quiet after 9:00 pm. but all it would have taken was one super partylicious group to fire things up.
  • The beach isn’t super beachy. There’s a scenic area for photo opps – small but pretty to look at. The swimmable beach is more inlet with a protected dock than a wide open beach. For us, it got the job done.

SheBuysTravel Tip: If you consider yourself a foodie, stay at least four nights to give yourself a chance to do some serious sampling and if you want to eat at Butch’s or Vincent, ask about reservations early on in your stay.

Woodstock, Vermont has become a destination for fall leaf peepers looking for an afternoon of apple picking and cider sipping, but the area has plenty to keep you entertained throughout the year. I consider myself a part-time Vermonter, and though I tend to spend most of my time in the small town in Southern Vermont my family lives in, when I get the chance to explore more of the Green Mountain State, I’m always impressed by the natural beauty, fantastic local food, and unending ways to entertain yourself, especially outdoors.

I recently spent a few nights at the Woodstock Inn and Resort for the property’s Summer Supper Series, but I experienced lot more than dinner. This historic hotel, recently renovated, is the picture of cozy New England comfort with plenty to do, whether you prefer outdoor adventure, a day on the links or some R&R in the spa.

Pros:

  • Located in an area rife with activities for visitors of all ages
  • You’ll find excellent dining options at the hotel and in the surrounding town
  • Spacious and expertly decorated rooms with local furniture and art

Cons:

  • The hotel does not have an on-site fitness center
  • Food and activity options vary widely depending on the season

SheBuysTravel Tip: Explore local hiking. The Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller Historical Park (a 15-minute walk from the Inn) features 550 acres to explore with 20 miles of trails for all skill levels.

The writer was hosted.

Accommodations

A guest room at Woodstock Inn & Resort

The Inn has 142 rooms and suites, all of which underwent renovation in 2018. Mine felt like an elevated New England retreat with elegant drapery, upholstered furniture and Audubon prints on the walls. Unique furniture pieces made by local artisans make each room feel special and add to the feeling that you can truly make yourself at home in almost any corner of the hotel.

Visitors can choose from five room types, including dog-friendly accommodations and higher-end Legacy Suites and Woodstock Collection rooms, new since the renovations.

SheBuysTravel Tip: Skip the airport stress — Lyft’s On-Time Pickup Promise guarantees your scheduled ride shows up within 10 minutes of your pickup time. If it doesn’t? You’ll get Lyft Cash. You can schedule up to 90 days in advance and even lock in your rate. Use code SBT25 to save 25% off ONE scheduled ride to the airport.

Are you ready to explore off the beaten path? Let us inspire you!

Dining

a plate of crispy fried quail with grits

The Inn has four dining options on and off the main property.

  • The Red Rooster serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, with a bar operating from 3 pm to 9 pm. Though I was pregnant during my stay and couldn’t sample the cocktails, my husband loved the signature negroni. In the late afternoon, this area becomes a warm and welcoming hangout spot for friends and strangers to mingle over local brews. Suffice it to say, this isn’t your typical stuffy hotel bar.
  • Richardson’s Tavern serves dinner. The menu reflects Executive Chef Matthew McClure’s dedication to local ingredients. I recommend the chicken liver mousse served with fluffy zucchini bread for a rich but excellent appetizer. The chef’s vegetable plates rotate with the seasons and should not be skipped.
  • During the summer, the Inn opens the Fairway Grill at the Woodstock Country Club for lunch from Wednesday to Sunday (the bar is open until 5 pm).
  • On select Sundays and Thursdays from June to September, the Inn hosts dinners at Red Barns at Kelly Way Gardens, which was my reason for visiting the inn. Each night features a local producer in a multi-course dinner with wine pairings.

A ticket for a Thursday night dinner (which I experienced) gets you a more formal affair, including a cocktail hour in the gardens followed by a four-course seated dinner. More casual Sunday Suppers include three courses served family-style.

I visited for a Thursday night dinner featuring lamb from Five Sigma Farm. I loved getting to know our neighbors at the communal dinner table and hearing from the farmer about his approach to raising lamb using a system of rotating pastures. We could also watch the kitchen staff prepare each dish in the open kitchen — it’s always fun to get dinner and a show.

Don’t miss a visit to the gardens while staying at the Inn, where you can meander through rows of raspberries, fruit trees and edible flowers.

Amenities

Two people in a hot tub outdoors

  • The spa offers facials, massages, aromatherapy and tinting and waxing. After your session, relax in the airy indoor atrium and warm up in a sauna or hot tub. I had a wonderful prenatal massage and my husband loved his deep tissue massage.
  • Lounge by the outdoor pool during warmer months with food and drink service from the Red Rooster.
  • The Inn is partnered with the Woodstock Golf Club for tee time.
  • The on-site Activity Center offers fly fishing, biking and hiking expeditions for individuals and groups.
  • The Woodstock Athletic Club sits three minutes down the road by car. The expansive facility includes cardio equipment, free weights and machines, plus an indoor lap pool and tennis and pickleball courts. We had a great time hitting around on the pickleball court; they have paddles and balls to use, but the courts are first-come, first-served.

What’s Nearby

There are ample opportunities for adventure, culinary delights and sightseeing in the region.

  • Stop in Yankee Bookshop for best-sellers and local writers. We spent nearly an hour here browsing the shelves and each went home with a new paperback recommended by the staff.
  • Visit Mon Vert for a hearty breakfast or lunch, followed by a maple creemee from Woodstock Scoops. The sandwiches at Mon Vert are ample and stuffed. I highly recommend anything made with local cheese.
  • Drive 15 minutes to Queeche for the Simon Pearce flagship store. Browse beautiful glassware and ceramics and watch seasoned glassblowers at work. The restaurant here is a beautiful setting for a fancy lunch or dinner as well, but you’ll likely need a reservation to avoid a wait.
  • The Billings Farm and Museum, a half mile from the hotel, makes a fun visit for kids (complimentary for Inn guests). Get you up close and personal with animals on the working dairy farm.
  • King Arthur Flour headquarters in Norwich, Vermont is a baker’s paradise. I can’t visit without ordering a signature cinnamon roll. It’s unforgettable.

Getting There/Parking

It takes about two and a half hours to get to The Woodstock Inn and Resort from Boston. The closest airports are Burlington, Lebanon, New Hampshire, Manchester, New Hampshire and Boston Logan.

Amtrak trains from Boston, D.C., New York and Montreal stop in White River Junction, about 25 minutes from the Inn. Hotel guests get free on-site parking.

Planning an escape to an adults-only all-inclusive resort can be exciting, but you also want to get it right. After staying in hundreds of resorts, one thing I know is that the choice of lodging matters: selecting the resort that best meets your expectations is essential.

I can say from experience that nothing sours a vacation faster than someone who wants a certain kind of stay and ends up at a resort that is NOT THAT.

Choose your adults-only all-inclusive by considering these things:

  • Travel Style: This defines the type of resort you seek, whether that’s a romantic escape, wellness retreat, party atmosphere or culinary adventure
  • Budget: Several levels all based on how much you want to spend
    • Entry-levelMid-levelLuxe or Ultra Luxe
  • Amenities or Activities: These are specific things to look for when booking a resort with your intended travel style. Pay attention to amenities and activities that cater to the things you want to do, type of food you enjoy, etc.

Are you ready to explore off the beaten path? Let us inspire you!

Fortunately, there are adults-only all-inclusives at various price points to fit just what you’re looking to spend. Also, I’ve found that booking during shoulder seasons or when there’s a promotion can also make a big difference in your bottom line.

The moment you step into the lobby of the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic, paradise greets you with a chilled dragon fruit welcome drink. It’s a preview of all that awaits.

At this sprawling, 121-acre all-inclusive resort , almost everything is part of your package.

Frosty pina colada and a fruity paleta? Have both. Morning protein shakes at the gym, unlimited drinks at the swim-up bar and late-night snacks – absolutely.

Opened in 2011 as Hard Rock’s first all-inclusive Caribbean property, the resort has recently undergone major renovations, adding a new water park and updated kids’ club.

Editor’s Note: The writer was hosted.

Pinktober in Paradise

October brings a special energy here. As part of Hard Rock International’s 26th annual global PINKTOBER® campaign — which has raised over $13 million worldwide for breast cancer research and awareness — this Caribbean hotel keeps the fundraising proceeds local. Money raised from their Pinktober in Paradise events directly benefit RCD Foundation and Hard Rock Heals Foundation®, funding education, screening and prevention programs throughout the region and providing direct aid to resort team members currently battling breast cancer.

As an 18-year breast cancer survivor, I was invited to participate and I loved how they promoted the event throughout the property. Staff donned themed shirts, pink drinks were served in matching cups and the casino had giant inflatable ribbons. Fundraisers included golf course events, a silent auction and a beachfront 2K Walk for a Cause.

SheBuysTravel Tip : Pinktober deals last through December 20, 2025, with up to 55% off stays, early check-in and late check-out (availability permitting). Limited edition Pinktober merchandise is available at the hotel lobby’s Rock Shop, with some proceeds benefiting the cause.

Guest Rooms

With 1,882 rooms, including suites and villas, it’s one of the largest and most luxurious resorts in the Caribbean. All rooms have pullout couches and hydro spa tubs. My tub was outdoors on the balcony so I enjoyed late night dips under the stars before heading off to sleep.

No matter where your room is, you’re never far from a pool or the beach. To get around the expansive property, you can hop on one of the 24-hour trolleys, unless you want to get in your daily steps. (Note: GPS video maps show you when the next trolley will arrive.)

SheBuysTravel Tip : Request an “A” block room for quick access to the water, or a “B” block room to be closer to the main building’s shops and restaurants. But note: some “A” rooms will be noisy during daytime hours if they overlook a pool.

Amenities

Hard Rock Punta Cana offers endless ways to play. Claim a shaded seat by the pristine, private beach covered in sugar white sand. No need to get up at the crack of dawn to claim your pool or beachside chair like at many resorts; there are plenty to go around.

There are 14 pools, including one for families, an adults-only, a waterpark and a lazy river. Each has its own vibe and music selection. There are even a couple of quiet pools for those who want to read in peace.

Highlights:

  • There are several swim-up bars to keep you refreshed and hydrated and lots of food and drink options so you can stay waterside all day.
  • If you’re a wannabe rock star, borrow a Fender guitar to jam in the privacy of your room. Curate a personalized playlist to create a vacation soundtrack.
  • Play on an 18-hole Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course
  • Dance the night away at Oro nightclub, open Wednesday-Saturdays from 11 p.m. to 4 a.m. (at an extra charge)

What’s Not Included at this All-Inclusive Resort

Some activities carry extra charges:

  • FloRider surf simulator
  • Escape rooms
  • Bowling
  • Mini golf
  • Video game room

There are also lots of shops to spend your money on diamonds, artwork, sunglasses and souvenirs. Bring your own pool toys, floats and sunscreen to avoid high resort prices.

Dining at Hard Rock Punta Cana

You’ll never go hungry here, with 26 food and beverage outlets, including 12 restaurants. Dine at a Brazilian steakhouse, burger spot, Mexican, Middle Eastern, Italian and several casual buffets.

Only Toro American steakhouse and Zen Hibachi require reservations.

Pool snack bars and food trucks serve burgers, hot dogs, wings and more. In the evening, stroll the Boulevard near the lobby for carts offering churros, waffles and Nutella crepes.

For a unique dining experience, splurge at the multi-sensory gastronomic performance of Awaken Your Senses. Travel the globe, enjoying seven courses paired with cocktails while video projections, a surround sound system, scent synchronization and an interactive table take you from the streets of London to under the Caribbean Sea. The creatively served food was some of the best at the resort.

Entertainment

No one is bored at a Hard Rock Hotel, where entertainment never stops. I watched a live Beyoncé tribute and Queen performance. There were also nights with an electric violinist and a lively guitarist who got people dancing.

Take a memorabilia tour with the Vibe Manager (what a cool job title!). Gabriella Hernandez guides guests around the property to see 500 pieces of rock history.

There’s Elton John’s Hand-Painted piano, Billy Idol’s motorcycle, gowns worn by Jennifer Lopez, Lady Gaga and Katy Perry, plus many gold records, photos, paintings and other memorabilia.

The collection also features many items from Latin music legends, reflecting the resort’s location in the Dominican Republic.

Feeling lucky? Try your hand at the slots or blackjack at the island’s largest casino. During my visit, they held a Pinktober slots challenge. One guy in our group won $1,800!

Relaxation and Wellness

If you need a break from all the action, visit the Rock Spa, with 54 treatment rooms plus several couples’ suites. Enhance your experience with a hydrothermal session that includes stops in the sauna, steam and ice rooms. Coat your body with a muddy exfoliant and then wash it all off in a cold shower. End with a whirlpool soak. Or head outdoors for a massage under a thatched-roof palapa by the pool, accompanied by a frozen mojito.

There’s an expansive gym and numerous daily free exercise classes indoors and out. Take a spin class, do a water workout in the sun, play beach volleyball or learn some salsa moves poolside.

Found primarily in Mexico and the Caribbean, all-inclusive resorts are a terrific option for families — but not all are the same. As a frequent visitor to all-inclusives, I’ve learned that choosing the right type is key to a successful trip.

Following are several categories of all-inclusive family resorts – with some recommended choices – to help you select the kind that best fits your family’s needs.

You can choose an all-inclusive family-friendly resort based on things such as:

  • What does it include? Does it work for all ages?
  • Are there a wide variety of kid-centered amenities?
  • What type of family amenities, activities & entertainment exist?
  • Are there any adult/grandparent amenities (or quieter/tranquil spots for those who need them)
  • Does it work for your budget (entry-level, luxury, ultra luxury)
  • What’s the dining like?
  • Would a resort with both à la carte & all-inclusive plans be better?

Resorts typically vary by:

  • Age Policies and Restrictions
  • Primary Target Audience
  • Activities and Entertainment
  • Location and Environment
  • Dining Options
  • Accommodation Options
  • Extra Perks

SheBuysTravel Tip: Skip the airport stress — Lyft’s On-Time Pickup Promise guarantees your scheduled ride shows up within 10 minutes of your pickup time. If it doesn’t? You’ll get Lyft Cash. You can schedule up to 90 days in advance and even lock in your rate. Use code SBT25 to save 25% off ONE scheduled ride to the airport.

    • Other: The resort offers lovely & spacious rooms and suites, some with balconies overlooking the ocean

Sometimes, of course, you can find a lodging option that combines more than one offering. Be sure the one that’s most important to your group and your goal is the one that leads the way, no matter what the location. These considerations all help to make the choice of an all-inclusive one that effectively meets your family’s needs in the best way possible.

Our Stay at The Royal

My family chose The Royal and indulged in a wide range of amenities and activities that kept us entertained throughout our stay. From the Aquaventure water park, to the marine animal encounters, to the spa, there’s something for everyone.

We love fun and food and the resort has a large variety of both. But perhaps the biggest reason I loved staying at The Royal at Atlantis is the close proximity to everything. The Dig, filled with marine life, is easily accessed from The Royal Lobby and Aquaventure water park is a short walking distance from your room or suite. There are also several restaurants and bars located in The Royal as well as right next door in Atlantis Casino. Last, The Royal is also the home of Atlantis Kids Adventure – a club for children ages 3-12.

Here are our 25 reasons why you should book your stay at The Royal at Atlantis.

The resort features the iconic Mayan Temple’s Leap of Faith slide, where you can slide through a shark-filled lagoon, as well as more than 20 swimming areas and a water park, providing endless hours of thrills and excitement.

Aquaventure is considered one of the best water parks in the Caribbean. Our family’s favorite water slides at Aquaventure are:

  • The Leap of Faith: This is a thrilling water slide that drops riders nearly 60 feet through a clear acrylic tunnel and into a shark-filled lagoon.
  • The Rapids River: This river anything but lazy! Here, you float down a mile-long river with rapids and wave surges that ratchet up the thrill level.
  • The Abyss: One of the resort’s most popular attractions, this water ride features a series of high-speed water slides through dark, twisting tunnels and down steep drops.

If you’d prefer relaxation over thrills, there is an actual lazy river. Or you can just snag one of the many places to sit poolside.

You don’t have to get wet to have fun at The Royal at Atlantis in The Bahamas! Activities that don’t involve water include:

  • Tennis: Play on Atlantis Paradise Island tennis courts or take a lesson from a pro.
  • Spa and Wellness: We’ve already mentioned the wide array of services offered at the luxurious Mandara Spa, from face and body treatments to yoga classes.
  • Fitness Center: The Royal also has a state-of-the-art gym and fitness classes so you can maintain your fitness routine while on vacation.
  • Shopping: The resort offers a wide selection of shopping options, from high-end designer boutiques to traditional Bahamian souvenir shops.
  • Casino: The large casino offers a variety of games, including slot machines and table games.
  • Entertainment and Shows: There is a wide range of entertainment options, from live shows to movies to special events, ensuring there’s always something to enjoy.

I’ve stayed in my share of all-inclusives. Buffets, bracelets, watered-down cocktails in plastic cups—you know the drill. But Hotel AWA, set on the pristine shores of Chile’s Lake Llanquihue, rewrites the all-inclusive  script.  It trades the bottomless piña coladas for glacier-fed rafting trips, guided volcano hikes, and cultural deep dives with local artisans. You won’t find tacky pool games or towel animals; instead, there are panoramic views of the snow-capped Osorno Volcano, homemade empanadas fresh from the oven, and more than two dozen thoughtfully curated outdoor adventures.

The Setting

view of volcano from Hotel Awa

Hotel AWA sits along the quiet southern shore of Lake Llanquihue, about 20 minutes from Puerto Varas, a charming town known for German-inspired architecture, lakeside cafés, and vibrant artisan markets. The area, part of Chile’s breathtaking northern Patagonia and famed Lake District, is defined by lush forests, snow-capped volcanoes, and sapphire-blue lakes carved by glaciers. Just across the water, the symmetrical peak of Osorno Volcano dominates the horizon creating a striking backdrop visible from nearly every vantage point. This region is a gateway to some of Patagonia’s most unforgettable landscapes.

What the All-Inclusive Actually Includes

This is where AWA flips the script. Instead of an open bar and buffet lines, your stay includes:

  • Daily curated excursions with a private guide
  • Three meals a day at the hotel restaurant (think local trout ceviche and handmade pastas)
  • Airport transfers and transport to excursion sites
  • Access to the hotel spa, indoor pool, and kayaks”

Accommodations

At first glance, the hotel looks sculptural and striking, all concrete, glass, and steel—a dramatic contrast to the natural tranquility around it. Step inside, and it softens into understated warmth: native wood, crackling fireplaces, and expansive windows framing uninterrupted views of sapphire water and volcanic peaks.

Originally designed as a private family home by renowned Chilean architects Mauricio Fuentes and Jimena Hernández, AWA still feels personal, intimate, and handcrafted. With just 25 guest rooms, each thoughtfully designed with soaking tubs, plush king beds, and private fireplaces, the hotel encourages lingering. You’ll drift to sleep watching clouds gather around the volcano and wake gently to the rhythmic lapping of lake waves.

Dining

Meals at AWA are as thoughtful as the excursions. Much of the produce is sourced from AWA’s own greenhouse and local farmers, a reflection of its commitment to sustainability and community. The wine cellar holds over 120 Chilean labels, and staff are eager to recommend perfect pairings. The hotel’s culinary program leans into Chilean terroir, balancing elegance and comfort. There’s no dress code here—just panoramic views of the lake and Osorno Volcano from your dinner table. Each meal feels intentional, highlighting flavors deeply rooted in Patagonia—perfectly seared lamb, seasonal produce from the hotel’s greenhouse, and carefully selected local wines, all enjoyed against a cinematic backdrop of lake and volcano.

Amenities

AWA offers a full suite of thoughtful amenities to match its luxurious, low-key vibe. Guests have access to a glass-walled indoor pool, dry sauna, fitness center, and full-service spa. Kayaks are available for paddling along the lake, and the cozy library and bar lounge are ideal spots to unwind between excursions.

What’s Nearby

AWA is located just outside Puerto Varas, a charming town known for its German-style architecture, lakeside promenade, and artisan markets. Nearby, guests can visit Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park, the oldest in Chile, or take day trips to see the Osorno and Calbuco volcanoes, Petrohué Falls, and the island of Chiloé.

Safety Features

Hotel AWA prioritizes guest well-being with features like 24-hour reception, on-site medical support, in-room safes, and keycard access. Excursions are led by certified local guides, and weather-related safety is built into the daily planning process to ensure guests enjoy their adventures with peace of mind.

Accessibility and Sustainability

AWA isn’t just beautiful. It’s also thoughtful. The hotel is wheelchair-accessible, with ramps, wide hallways, and ADA-compliant rooms. Sustainability is built into everything: geothermal heating, locally sourced food, and partnerships with conservationists preserving Patagonia’s landscapes and cultures.

So, Why Is It Called Hotel AWA?

Boating through Todos los Santos Lake
Boating through Todos los Santos Lake is one of the 30 outdoor options Hotel Awa provides. Photo Credit: Jennifer Simonson

Because “awa” means “water” in Mapudungun, the language of the Mapuche people. And you are never far from water here. Between the lake, rivers, and volcanic hot springs, the name fits.

What Makes Hotel AWA Special?

It feels personal. Like someone designed this place for people who are burned out and craving both quiet and wonder. The architecture, the food, the excursions—everything is intentional.

Is It Environmentally Sustainable?

Yes. From construction to operations, AWA was built to be low-impact and high-integrity. That includes eco-conscious infrastructure, waste management, and the championing of cultural preservation.

Is It Accessible?

Yes. The hotel is fully accessible to guests with mobility issues, and the staff is happy to customize activities accordingly.

What Outdoor Activities Can You Do?

The all-inclusive hotel includes more more than 30, including:

  • Rafting the Petrohué River
  • Hiking Osorno Volcano
  • Visiting traditional artisans
  • Biking
  • Sea kayaking
  • Fly fishing
  • Soaking in thermal baths
  • Horseback riding

Getting There

Hotel AWA is located just over 20 minutes from the Puerto Montt Airport (PMC), the main gateway to Chile’s Lake District. From there, the hotel arranges a scenic private transfer that hugs the lakeshore and winds past volcanoes and forests. I appreciated having someone else navigate the rural roads while I soaked in the view—rolling green hills, grazing sheep, and the occasional glimpse of Osorno Volcano appearing through the clouds.

For single parents, the thought of traveling alone with children can be overwhelming to say the least. From the planning to handling all of the logistics, there’s no telling how the trip will pan out.

I’ll never forget the first single mom vacation I took with my son, just two years old at the time. Aside from safely getting to and from our destination, all I could think about was whether it would be enjoyable and affordable.

Much to my surprise, there are many destinations that are family-friendly, even for the single parent. And with the travel industry seeing single and solo parent travel on the rise, travel is becoming easier and more affordable. Here we share several different ways you can take an incredible single mom vacation that everyone will enjoy.

Before You Go: Keep Your Travel Documents Safe and Accessible

This section is sponsored by 1Password.

As a single mom, we’re juggling plane tickets, hotel confirmations and keeping our kids entertained in an unfamiliar city. The last thing I want to worry about is whether all my travel documents and login information is easily available and safely secured. That’s why I started using 1Password. It’s more than just a password manager, it’s become my travel sanity-saver.

Before each trip, I upload scans of our passports, IDs, and even insurance cards. If something gets lost or stolen, I know I have a secure, easily accessible backup from any device. I also store travel confirmations, loyalty program details, and important contact numbers in 1Password, so I’m not digging through emails at the airport gate.

What really sold me, though, is 1Password’s Travel Mode. It lets me temporarily hide sensitive data from my phone and laptop while crossing borders, a small but powerful peace-of-mind feature that makes me feel safer traveling solo with my kids.

Limited-Time Offer: Right now, 1Password is offering a 14-day free trial for new customers!

Take a Domestic Single Mom Vacation

If you’re traveling as a single parent for the very first time, it’s easier to start small and stick to the States. Here are a few domestic destinations that pack plenty of fun for single parent families, no passport needed:

Arizona

Arizona has a number of all-inclusive resorts that offer so much to do that you won’t even have to leave the resort. Between the massive resort waterparks, spas, children’s programs and kids clubs, you can sit back and vacation in style. Outside of the resorts, there is plenty to do with the kids including exploring the museums, hiking the Grand Canyon or a visit to Bearizona Wildlife Park.

Florida

Florida is a popular single parent destination with plenty of fun activities that parents and children can do together. There you’ll find several popular kids theme parks such as Legoland, Seaworld and Disney World. Additionally, there are several beautiful family-friendly beaches and numerous outdoor activities. Many resorts across Florida offer kids clubs and daily activities to keep the little ones busy while you spend alone time at the spa or enjoying a kid-free meal.

Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico is a great option for a tropical Caribbean vacation that doesn’t require a passport. San Juan, Puerto Rico was the first place I’d traveled with my son as a single mom when he was just two years old. If there’s anything I wish I’d done differently, it’s to have stayed longer!

Puerto Rico has a number of family-friendly beaches that are safe for children and small enough to keep an eye on them as a single parent. There are also plenty of other places to explore with children, including El Yunque National Rainforest, the two forts: Castillo San Felipe del Morro and Castillo de San Cristóbal, the bioluminescent bay and the Rio Camuy Cave Park.

While Puerto Rico doesn’t have any completely all-inclusive properties, there are several family-friendly hotels that offer all-inclusive packages that bundle together your stay with other incredible perks.

International Destinations for Single Mom Vacations

Traveling internationally as a single mom can seem like a big, scary step. But thankfully, there are many international destinations that are both affordable and single-parent friendly. Here are a few of my favorite places to travel for a single mom vacation:

Two kids play together on an interactive touch screen.
Because of Mexico’s family-oriented nature, it is a great place to travel and meet other single parent families. Photo credit: Kimberly Miles

Mexico

Mexico was the first international destination that I traveled to as a single mom when my son was just three years old. In fact, it is Mexico’s family-friendly environment that helped sway my decision to make Mexico my home!

One of the perks of Mexico with kids is that many local restaurants have free supervised kids clubs. This makes the dining experience enjoyable for the whole family. As a single mom, having this option when my son and I go out to eat together is a win-win. He gets to play and meet other local and traveling kids, and I have a moment to myself to relax and enjoy my meal.

Mexico has numerous all-inclusive family resorts with fancy kids clubs and plenty of activities, making it a popular destination for family vacations. Some of these resorts let kids stay and play for free (such as Palace Resorts), and some even have the occasional single parent promotions that waive the single supplement fee– so it’s always best to check when booking your hotel.

Costa Rica

Costa Rica is another excellent idea for a single mom vacation, especially if your child loves nature and outdoor activities. My son and I first traveled to Costa Rica when he was just three years old, and he has been asking to go back ever since.

With Costa Rica having a large expat community, it isn’t hard to find other English speaking families. We actually ran into a couple of other single moms traveling with their little ones while in the airport. I was also surprised to find that there was a separate customs line for families who had kids in strollers. As a single mom traveling with a fussy three year old, this was a life saver that helped us quickly get in and out of the airport.

When it comes to activities, Costa Rica has plenty of beaches and nature to enjoy without spending a lot of money. From our Airbnb, we could spot monkeys, sloths and other wildlife while sitting on our porch or taking a dip in the pool. However, there are also various tours and activities for children of all ages that you can book and meet other families. Booking a private tour of the Manuel Antonio National Park was very affordable (and highly recommended for an enjoyable experience).

Aruba

Ever since my single momcation, Aruba has remained on my list of places to return with my son because of the vast number of family-friendly activities. Aruba is a small island that isn’t overwhelming to drive around alone. In fact, many other single parents I know have said that Aruba was by far one of the best vacations they have taken as a single parent.

Aruba has a “One Happy Family” program at several of its hotels and resorts that provide discounts and deals for kids ages 12 and under. These specials include free accommodations when sharing the same room as an adult, free daily breakfast, a family gift, kid cocktail upon check-in and a VIK (Very Important Kid) passport. Most of these hotels all sit on calm, swimmable beaches, giving you the option of how you want to soak in the sun with your kids.

There are also a number of family-friendly tours for all ages. I’ll never forget the ATV tour where tour guides were so incredibly helpful to a family traveling with their 5- and 8-year-olds. Both kids as well as the parents had the time of their lives!

SheBuysTravel Tip: Before traveling out of the country as a single parent, make sure you have your paperwork in order just in case you are asked for it! If you share custody or if the other parent is listed on the child’s birth certificate, bring a signed and notarized document from the other parent stating you have permission to travel with them to that particular destination. If you have sole custody, bring along a copy of your custody documents.

“Go” on a Staycation

Staycations are a much more affordable single mom vacation option and great for a short weekend getaway. Since you’re likely driving your own vehicle, there’s no need to worry about transportation. I’ve personally found plenty of gems in my own backyard that were worth exploring with my son and no more than a 30-minute drive away.

My son and I are no strangers to staycations. In fact, we try to take one every now and then for a small change of scenery and for a fun way to act like a tourist in our own city. Sometimes we splurge on expensive hotels and resorts, but many times we prefer to stay in affordable family-friendly hotel chains such as the Holiday Inn or Choice Hotels where kids stay and eat free. That way we have extra money to splurge on room service or to save up for a bigger getaway!

Set Sail on a Cruise

Cruises are a highly-recommended vacation option for single and solo parents. And if booking a closed-loop course (starting and returning to the same US port), you won’t even need a passport!

Cruise ships take the hassle out of planning. Everything you need is in one place: lodging, meals and fun activities and excursions. Solo parents have plenty of opportunities for some “me time” while on the cruise thanks to the kids’ clubs. Additionally, there will be other families traveling, making it easy for them to meet friends. If you ask me, it’s the best way to see multiple parts of the world as a single parent family.

Here are a few cruise lines that are great for single parents and kids:

Disney Cruises, one of the best single mom vacations.
Disney cruises are a magical way to travel as a single parent family. Photo credit: Jill Robbins

Disney Cruise Lines

Although on the expensive side, Disney Cruise Lines is still a popular choice for single mom vacations. These magical cruises pack a ton of family-friendly activities for both kids and adults. From exciting family entertainment to themed accommodations with 24-hour room service, it won’t even feel like you’re traveling alone. In fact, every single parent I know who has cruised with Disney has said it is well worth the cost!

Disney Cruise Lines is also known to place single parent families together during dinners, taking the pressure out of traveling alone. My son is very friendly and talkative, so I know he’d enjoy meeting a new family. There are also forums where single parent families can meet and chat before the cruise.

MSC Cruises

Voted the “Best Family Cruise Line,” MSC Cruises are specifically built for moms, dads and children to enjoy time together as well as separately. With kid clubs for ages ranging from 0-17, even the older kids in the family will be able to enjoy themselves.

Children under the age of 18 who travel in the same cabin as their parents, cruise for free year-round on select cruises. They also frequently waive the single supplement on select itineraries. It’s definitely worth checking into when booking to see whether it applies to your trip!

Norwegian Cruise Lines

Single parents traveling alone with their children will find plenty to do on Norwegian Cruise Lines. Children have plenty to do including zipping down twisting water slides, swimming in the pool or playing a game of basketball on the multi-use sports deck. There’s also a complimentary cruise youth program for children ages 6 months-17 years. There, they’ll have fun playing with other kids while you relax at the spa and mingle with other adults.

When it comes to accommodations, there’s a small (yet swanky) suite designed just for solo travelers. While more expensive than a double-occupancy room on a per person basis, it’s less expensive than the single supplement. There’s also complimentary family dining.

Travel with a Family Tour Group

One thing that I have learned as a solo traveler is that traveling alone doesn’t mean that you’re alone! With these tour groups, you’ll be enjoying an action-packed single mom vacation with other traveling families. Another bonus? You don’t have to do any of the planning– just pack your bags and get ready to have fun!

G Adventures

G Adventures specializes in planning small group travel of no more than three or four families. For the single parent traveler, this is an excellent way to meet other worldwide families while building everlasting friendships!

These family trips aren’t just vacations, but fun hands-on educational experiences that expose you to the culture and language. Some of their most popular family trips include Peru, Thailand, Costa Rica, Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands.

Intrepid Travel

Intrepid Travel offers solo parent vacation packages to far away and exotic destinations. Some of the destinations include Morocco, Thailand, Vietnam, Egypt and India. You and your children will take part in fun yet educational age-appropriate activities such as snorkeling amongst the coral reefs of the Red Sea, hiking the Amazon jungle, exploring Chinese temples and dining with local families.

The best part is, they take care of all of the planning and arrangements so that you don’t have to stress about a thing. To make it even more affordable for single parent traveling families, they even offer 10% off for children under the age of 17.

OARS

For single parent families who love outdoor adventures but don’t feel comfortable doing it alone, OARS has you covered. This tour group offers diverse outdoor family vacations appropriate for families with children as young as four years old.

Most of their trips take place in the western states of Colorado, Arizona, Colorado and Alaska. There, you’ll participate as a group in exciting activities such as river rafting, camping, kayaking or horseback riding. There are also international family trips to Peru, Costa Rica and Mexico. The tours usually take place over school breaks so you don’t have to worry about missing a day of class!

Vacation Express is an online booking site that offers family-friendly vacation packages to the best beaches in the Caribbean. Their destinations include Cancun, Jamaica, Bahamas, Dominican Republic, Panama and Saint Lucia.

In addition to the kids’ clubs, kid-friendly entertainment and restaurants, their line of “Smile” resorts waive the single supplement fee for single parents sharing a room with their kids. Additionally, up to two children ages 2-12 can stay, play and eat free. Teens get special pricing as well!

Plan a Road Trip

Going a vacation doesn’t have to mean getting on a plane, train or boat. Sometimes the best places are a short road trip away. Road trips are great for single parents who are on a budget or don’t have time for lengthy trips.

The first road trip I took with my son was to New Jersey when he was just two years old. It was helpful to be in control of our own schedule and take breaks as needed. It was also nice that he could play with his toys in the car without disturbing other passengers. My recommendation is to get up bright and early before traffic and to safely get to your destination before dark.

For my beachgoers, you’ll unlock true island paradise when you sink your feet into the soft white sand. With 6 beaches spanning more than five miles, it’s the place to unwind with a book (and drink) in hand.

Those who like water sports and activities, Aquaventure is sure to get your adrenaline pumping. The 141-acre waterpark is home to the iconic Mayan Temple where guests can ride the 60-foot-drop water slide, Leap of Faith.

It’s cliché, but there’s something for everyone at Atlantis Resort. With five unique properties, each tower has its own personality. Given the size of the resort, it felt like we discovered something new every day.

SheBuysTravel Tip: Atlantis is an expansive resort. Before you go, read our Atlantis Bahamas tips for visiting.

A Little Me Time

As a busy, working 30-year-old, it’s difficult to plan vacations that aren’t centered around a bachelorette party, wedding, or first birthday.

It’s also tricky to find international destinations that are safe for both solo and family travel. Without a doubt, Atlantis is somewhere I can confidently see myself traveling to as a single traveler or with friends.

If you’re a millennial in need of a self-care trip or parent who wants a safe, fun beach vacation, Atlantis is the place for you.

And if you’re curious why The Coral has the best pool in Atlantis, keep reading!

The Coral

For this trip, we stayed at The Coral, a family friendly property that offers spacious rooms and is conveniently located near the marina and activities.

My first impression of The Coral: its lobby had bright, lively energy and the design felt nostalgic yet retro.

We also learned that The Coral offers full balconies for most rooms that have either ocean or marina views. Our room faced the ocean and overlooked the pool at The Coral. (Spoiler alert: This was my favorite pool at Atlantis. Three words: Poolside pina coladas.)

The Coral Highlights

  • Family friendly, with spacious rooms & suite options
  • Centrally located, close to Marina village, Crystal Shops, and the world famous, Atlantis Casino
  • Near interactive lagoons like the stingray lagoon
  • A 5-10 min walk to Aquaventure and the lazy river
  • Near dining options like Nobu and Chopstix
  • 600+ rooms, each with a balcony overlooking the harbor or the ocean
  • Clean rooms with toiletries, flat screen TV, mini-fridge, iron, coffee maker, safe
  • Guestroom choice of 1 King bed or 2 Queen beds
  • Starbucks within The Coral as well as gelato shop called Sun & Ice
  • Free shuttles around the resort (run ~20 mins)
  • Room service, dry cleaning, laundry service
  • Air conditioning, wifi, telephone
  • Amazing water views

Impressions of The Coral

The lobby of The Coral has a retro charm that’s both inviting and energetic. My eyes were immediately drawn to the marbled mosaics with soft hues of pink and orange. The overall design felt traditional Caribbean and the ambiance was lively, yet relaxed.

With more than 600 rooms, The Coral has just 12 floors. Personally, I felt this created an ambiance that reminded me of boutique style hotels.

From a family travel perspective, I think The Coral is the best choice for those who like space and suite options. It’s still close enough to walk to Aquaventure and the free Atlantis shuttles are super for when your feet are tired.

At check-in you’re given a reusable metal water bottle that can be ‘topped off’ at any Atlantis water refill station. Buying bottled water quickly adds up, so take advantage of the reusable bottle. It’s cost effective and environmentally friendly!

The Coral Towers are close to the Marina Village and Predator Tunnel. We enjoyed the short walk to Aquaventure and Dolphin Cay.

Personally, I like how Atlantis is spread out with multiple properties, pools, and dining options. As an active person, I loved taking morning walks and exploring different corners of the Atlantis resort.

Expect to be surrounded by stunning tropical plants and marine lagoons buzzing with aquatic life. One of my favorite discoveries was a lagoon that was home to the rare smalltooth sawfish.

Guestrooms at The Coral

As an over-packer who likes to spread out and feel ‘at home’ when traveling, I appreciated how spacious the rooms are at The Coral. Standard room features include one king or two queen beds, flat screen TV, small dining table, mini-fridge, coffee maker, iron, and large closet.

My favorite feature was the balcony with outdoor seating and ocean views.

The bathroom was mid-size and worked for our needs. It was equipped with plenty of towels, toiletries, and a hair dryer. Also, our room was cleaned every day and replenished with fresh towels.

One thing that I wish we had taken advantage of was to stock the minifridge with water and snacks. Instead, we ordered room service and indulged in pre-dinner Prosecco while watching the sunset. Not a bad trade off!

The Coral was quiet at night, making it easy to fall asleep and get a good night’s rest. The beds were also very comfy!

Dining at Atlantis

As a self-proclaimed ‘foodie’ I’ll admit that I’m spoiled by access to some of the best restaurants in the world working in New York City. Naturally, preparing for this trip I did a decent amount of research on the dining options at Atlantis. Initially, I was skeptical of the adult friendly dining options since the resort is geared towards family travel.

To my surprise, Atlantis has over 40 eating establishments, including 6 Signature Dining restaurants like Nobu, 9 bars and lounges, and enough other eating options to earn this foodie girl’s stamp of approval.

For parents, if you’re traveling with kids and want to escape for a date night, Atlantis has in-room babysitting services so you can have a romantic dinner out. From quick service meals to splurge-worthy dinners, there are plenty of on-site restaurants to choose from.

Dining at The Coral

The Coral has three dining options: Sun & Ice, Chopstix, and Starbucks. Situated in the lobby is Sun & Ice, a quick service breakfast and lunch spot. The lines can get long, so my recommendation is to get there early or do what we did and explore options by the outdoor pools.

Typically, when I’m traveling, I’ll skip breakfast, have a light lunch and go big at dinner. We followed this routine every day and it worked perfectly for us. The first day we ordered lunch at The Coral pool and shared a chicken sandwich with chips & guacamole. It was very good, and we also enjoyed a few poolside drinks, which were delicious!

Pool at The Coral

My favorite part of The Coral was the pool. Between the swim up bar and DJ, it was the perfect mixture of relaxation meets tropical pool party. As a 30-year-old with no kids, this was something that made it feel like a girl’s trip.

Another thing I liked about The Coral was the proximity to the Marina Village. Everyone needs to experience a cocktail from The Dilly Club.

One thing that I wish we did on the first day was walk to the beach. It was a little confusing to navigate the beach entrance from The Coral. However, the last day we accidentally stumbled upon a beach entrance from The Reef. We eventually figured out how to get to the beach from The Coral. Looking back, we should have asked the concierge.

Things to Do Near The Coral

If you plan on staying at The Coral, expect to have quick access to the pool, beach, and Marina Village. You can easily walk to the luxury Crystal Court Shops and Atlantis Casino from within The Coral Towers. Just outside The Coral, are the stingray and reef lagoons where you can interact with the wildlife on property.

My recommendation is to download the Atlantis App or play around with the interactive map beforehand on the website. At check-in they gave us a pamphlet with a detailed map of the resort that was a life saver. Make sure you save that!

For anyone who needs to work during their stay, Atlantis has a business center located next to The Coral. This is equipped with self-service computers, printers, and even graphic design services for any work needs.

  • The Coral Pool and Atlantis Beach
  • Food: Chopstix, Lagoon Bar & Grille (this had great frose!)
  • Activities: Reef Lagoon, Stingray Lagoon, Water’s Edge Lagoon, Rope Bridge, Marina Village
  • Water activities: Aquaventure

Girls Trip Approved Dinners at Atlantis

During our stay, we dined at Nobu, Fish by Jose Andres, and the Seafire Steakhouse. Each was exceptional.

Nobu Miami is one of my favorite restaurants, so you can imagine how excited I was to experience Nobu Atlantis.

Nobu

The restaurant is in The Royal. It’s situated right off the casino floor, with a dimly lit archway and big glass doors that expose the intimate lighting and lounge vibe. The ambiance of Nobu is unmatched and if you can get a reservation, it’s a splurge-worthy dining experience.

Nobu’s renowned chef, Matsuhisa, prepares classic Japanese cuisine with a Bahamian twist. We ordered a mountain of food, and the unanimous favorites were the miso cod, wagyu dumplings, and mushroom salad with a lemon vinaigrette. The service was top notch and the staff made excellent recommendations based on our food interests.

Fish by Jose Andres

The second night we ate at Fish by Jose Andres, another incredible culinary experience. This restaurant is located at The Cove, which is a 10-15 minute walk from The Coral or a short ride on Atlantis’ complimentary shuttle service. Before dinner, we grabbed a drink at Seaglass, a fun cocktail bar that’s right around the corner from Fish.

For dinner, we indulged in local, fresh-caught fish and delicious sides like lobster mac and cheese. Fish was designed with an open kitchen concept; I love the high energy that radiates from open kitchens, it’s contagious!

Seafire Steakhouse and The Dilly Club

The last night we ate at Seafire Steakhouse which is in the Marina Village.

Before dinner, we went to The Dilly Club, which was highly recommended to us. If you need a caffeine kick during the day, The Dilly Club offers a variety of specialty coffee and espresso drinks. At night, it transforms into a craft cocktail lounge and offers an impressive array of cocktails made by expert mixologists. My only regret was not going here sooner! Note that the Dilly Club is cash or credit card only – you aren’t able to charge the bill back to your room.

The Seafire Steakhouse was exceptionally busy, and we were lucky to be seated outside in the heart of the village. The atmosphere was a pleasant mixture of chill island vibes with lively groups dining and walking through the village.

Towards the end of dinner, a Junkanoo Parade swept through the marina led by a group of energetic Bahamians dressed in traditional attire playing music and dancing. It was a fantastic way to end our trip.

Atlantis Amenities

Whether you’re traveling with kids or going on a girl’s trip, Atlantis has a lot to offer its guests. Personally, I loved the pool options, shops, water park and spa. As both an active and lazy traveler, it was nice to have the option to break from tanning and cool off in the pools.

What I like about Atlantis is they do an exceptional job making sure there is something for everyone, no matter your age. My advice for first timers; do your research. The website is super informative and details how to access each amenity. Also, the concierge is super helpful at providing recommendations.

Mandara Spa

No girls trip is complete without a little time for self-care. For that, head to the Mandara Spa.

It’s a full-service spa equipped with saunas, steam rooms, hot/cold plunges, and aromatherapy. It offers a variety of treatments like facials and massages. Location wise, the spa is closer to The Cove, so expect an 8-10-minute walk from The Coral.

My experience at the spa was Five Stars. As soon as I entered the lobby, citrusy aromas and ambient water sounds captured my senses. Check-in was seamless and the front desk attendee offered me herbal water before I toured the women’s lounge.

Once acclimated, I slipped into my robe and met my massage therapist. As a massage snob, I can honestly say this was the best massage that I’ve ever had. Next time, I’m booking a facial too!

Fitness Center

Located close to the spa is the fitness center, which has everything you need to get a quick sweat sesh in. I’m an active person, but on vacation I prefer to be lazy.

Although I didn’t use the fitness center, I peeked inside to check out the equipment. Impressive! For sports enthusiasts, you can take advantage of the 18-hole, par 72 golf course, join a Pilates class at the Pilates studio or hit the tennis courts for some friendly competition.

Book your Atlantis vacation now!

Aquaventure

You can’t mention Atlantis without talking about the impressive 141-acre Aquaventure that’s home to the iconic water slides, Rapids River, and Dolphin Cay. As suspected, it was a hot spot for kids and for good reason, it’s a ton of fun.

I’ve experienced my fair share of water parks and Aquaventure quickly unleashed my inner child.

Atlantis Amenities:

  • 14 pools, with cabana rentals
  • Aquaventure , home to iconic waters slides
  • Dolphin Cay and marine adventures
  • Non-motorized water sports, snorkeling, paddling boarding, etc.
  • Beach access
  • Mandara Spa
  • Fitness Center
  • Golf Course, tennis courts
  • Excursions where you can do city tours and water sports
  • Day pass opportunity for cruise ship guests

The Coral at Atlantis Review: Final Thoughts

Overall, I really enjoyed my experience and stay at The Coral and would 100% stay there again. Since this was my first trip to Atlantis, I wasn’t sure what to expect when we arrived at 1 Casino Drive.

For a girl’s trip, The Coral met our needs perfectly. It was clean, had a great pool, and is close to shops and restaurants. Overall, I found the staff both helpful and friendly and the service exceeded my expectations.

As a childfree traveler, I appreciated that The Coral is located away from the busier parts of the resort. In general, I prefer a more laid-back vibe when I travel. That said, it was nice to have the option to walk over to Aquaventure to change things up.

Visiting Atlantis with Kids

If you want to be in the heart of Atlantis or are traveling with active kids, my recommendation is to look at The Royal. It is closer to the water activities like Aquaventure and Dolphin Cay. Check out our full review of The Royal.

If you like super luxe rooms and the option for adults only pools, then The Coral might not be your best choice. However, Atlantis has two luxury properties, The Reef and The Cove that feature more premium rooms and suites. Plus, the 18+ pool at The Cove is great for couples and adults.

Atlantis is truly one of the best trips I’ve experienced. It’s the perfect mix of relaxation, leisure, and activities. No matter how old you are, kids or no kids, Atlantis offers something for everyone. How often can you say that about a resort? If you’ve been thinking about going to Atlantis, take this as your sign to start planning your next trip.

Having traveled to several all-inclusive resorts in the Caribbean and Mexico, I recognize that most adult-only resorts have a similar ambiance. Almost every resort has a stunning beach, multiple bars, and plenty of pools to relax by. Yet, Sandals Royal Barbados stands out as unique from other resorts, offering a vibrant and fun atmosphere blended with a calm, tranquil, and relaxing vacation. This resort’s design, activities, and superior dining options set this resort apart from the crows.

Why Sandals Royal Barbados Works for Any Adult

  • Spacious, modern, and updated luxury guest rooms
  • A pool for every preference: Quiet European pool, pool with swim-up bar, rooftop pool, etc.
  • Things to do beyond pool-side activities, such as Bowling
  • Access to both Royal Barbados and Barbados side, including pools, bars, and dining options
  • Lots of variations in international cuisine offerings
  • Spa amenities and water sports are available
  • Accessible, walkable property location to explore Barbados

Resort Design and Pools

One thing that stands out to me about Sandals Royal Barbados is the resort’s design. This resort is set up differently than other resorts I’ve been to, with a centralized pool location. The pools at this resort are spread out nicely and provide a great blend of relaxing or more vibrant options. For example, the European pool may be best for quietly reading your book poolside, whereas the Main Pool offers quicker access to the swim-up bar.

The resort is so massive you’re likely to get lost a few times (so keep that map they give you at check-in handy.) The initial atmosphere as you walk through the resort is “modern-luxury,” with the right blend of calmness yet not too quiet. The guest rooms are set back from the main happenings at the pool and beach, yet you are always only a short walk away from anything you need.

Sandals Royal Barbados and Barbados are two interconnected resorts. Guests staying on either side can walk through the by-pass to access the other side of the resort. Walking through the resort, I frequently needed clarification about which resort side I was on. Both sides are beautiful, but you’ll pay more to stay on the Royal Barbados side thanks to the recently updated rooms.

Activities at Sandals Royal Barbados

Many all-inclusive resorts offer standard amenities, such as relaxing spa services and day-and-night entertainment options. But I like that this resort offers other options for couples or groups of friends who are more playful. As someone who quickly gets tired of doing the same thing day after day, I appreciate the variety of activities offered at the resort.

Despite its name, Lover’s Lane, the on-site bowling alley is the perfect post-dinner activity for all guests. Whether you’re traveling with a group of girlfriends or your partner, this is the only resort in Sandals’ collection that offers this activity. The 4-lane bowling alley also has a craft beer bar inside, serving 19 beers worldwide.

Sandals Royal Barbados also has the first-ever rooftop pool at a Sandals resort. You’ll pass by this as you walk towards the beach area. However, I found there were limited signs for this pool – so it’s good to know about it before you visit.

The rooftop area is stunning and provides an excellent place to enjoy Barbados’ views and relax in the surrounding lounge areas. Whether you’re looking to join in a trivia game at the main pool or want to enjoy alone time, this resort has a pool destination for every visitor. This resort attracts adult travelers of all ages, from 20 to 30-something women, who visit on girls’ trips to older adults taking retirement vacations. This resort had less of an authentic honeymoon vibe, making it more inclusive for any type of adult traveler.

Superior Dining Options

When browsing for all-inclusive resorts to explore in Barbados, I found many resorts with dining options. As a true foodie, I don’t want to eat the same foods I eat at home while on vacation; I want to explore something new. At Sandals Royal Barbados, guests can access 21 restaurants on either the Royal or Barbados side. For the food adventurer, it’s almost difficult to decide where to go first. You will need reservations for a few select locations, which can be made by calling the front desk or visiting the dining reservations area.

Chi Asian Fusion and Bombay Club Restaurants

My personal favorites restaurants were those jam-packed with the most flavor: Bombay Club and Chi Asian Fusion Restaurant. Many all-inclusive resorts have hibachi-style Asian dining (Sandals does too at Kimono’s) but I like the this resort has a traditional sit-down Pan-Asian meal to enjoy. The menu has a great variety of small plates, sushi options, dim sum, and more.

My ultimate favorite restaurant here is Bombay Club. It’s not everyday you find an Indian restaurant at an all-inclusive resort. This restaurant is located on the Barbados side, just a short 5-min walk to get to. Here, you can immerse yourself in an authentic Indian dining atmosphere, complete with favorites like the Signature Dish: Butter Chicken. While you’re here, don’t miss the signature cocktail: The Mango Lassi.

Sweet n’ Salty’s Donut Shop

Sign that says 'donut worry, be happy' at Sandals Royal Barbados

Most all-inclusives have a cafe for sweets and treats, but the gourmet donut shop concept at Royal Barbados differs. Open all day until 5 p.m., you can stop by the Sweet n’ Salty’ Donut Shop any time you want fresh donuts, gourmet coffee drinks, or even coffee-infused cocktails. I thought this was a nice touch by Sandals’ to make for a unique experience. Plus, it’s something fun to do to start your day off before heading to the pool.

Final Takeaways from Sandals Royal Barbados

Whether you’re a frequent all-inclusive traveler or just want a memorable vacation. Sandals Royal Barbados is worth a visit. This resort creates a memorable experience for adults-only family vacations, couples vacations, or girls-trip getaways. There’s great dining options here for foodies and there’s a pool that will fit every traveler’s needs. Overall, this resort delivers just the right blend of relaxation and fun for adults.

When I think of Cabo San Lucas, all-night parties and tequila shots come to mind. However, despite this reputation, the Mexican coastal city is also a place of wellness. Thanks to Hacienda Encantada, visitors can enjoy a relaxing vacation at this all-inclusive optional resort that focuses on wellness and self-care.

I often have mixed feelings about resorts because they can sometimes be a barrier to connecting to the local culture. However, Hacienda Encantada balances showcasing Mexican design and providing a luxury experience.

Walking through the property, I appreciated the Handmade Talavera murals, Spanish fountains, and modern Mexican architecture, which made me feel connected to Mexico’s history and culture.

While my trip to the resort was centered around wellness, Hacienda Encantada is also a good choice for a solo getaway, a weekend girl’s trip, a romantic getaway or a relaxing family vacation.

Here’s how I spent my three-day trip to Cabo San Lucas.

While Hacienda Encantada hosted me, all opinions are my own.

Why Hacienda Encantada works for a wellness trip

  • Staff that is ready to cater to your needs
  • Milagro Spa Experience
  • Yoga classes
  • Fine dining
  • Ocean view restaurants
  • 3 different pools
  • Temazcal experience
  • Sports and fitness facilities on-site
  • Golf cart service to help you get around the property

Getting there

Cabo San Lucas is located on the southern coast of Baja, California. I flew into Cabo San Lucas International Airport. The main way to get to the resort is by taxi. You can either reserve a taxi from a private service or use the resort airport shuttle service.

The car ride to Hacienda Encantada was about 40 minutes.

When I arrived at the property, the staff was friendly and inviting. The check-in process takes about 20 minutes, during which you’ll be asked to leave a security deposit by cash or credit card. There are two ATMs on site; however, the resort is cashless, and credit cards are accepted for those not on the inclusive plan.

.

Two ways to stay: All inclusive Plan or European Plan

I was on the all-inclusive plan, which made moving about seamless. After eating out, I’d receive a bill with the tip already included. All I had to do was add my room number, and the staff would note that I was on the all-inclusive plan. This way, I didn’t have to worry about carrying my credit cards.

The all-inclusive plan includes the following:

  • Unlimited beverages and food a la carte at the 9 resort restaurants and selected restaurants in downtown Cabo San Lucas known as the Golden Zone marina.

I appreciated that the all-inclusive plan includes meals at local restaurants outside of the resort. This gives you more opportunities to explore outside of the resort walls.

The European Plan:

  • You can order and purchase food with your credit card. The costs of items are shown on the menus.  However, if you book accommodations with a kitchen, you can buy and cook your food during your stay.
  • Additionally, under the European plan, you can purchase an Inclusive Day Pass, which gives you all-inclusive perks for a day. This pass can be purchased before or during check-in.

Accommodations

Accommodation Options

Hacienda Suites:

  • Luxury suites include a king bed or two queen beds, a large bathroom with a whirlpool, a kitchenette, a sitting area, and a private balcony.
  • The master one-bedroom suite has a king-size bed, a suite bathroom, a sofa bed, a full kitchen, a dining area, a whirlpool, and a second bathroom.
  • A family two-bedroom suite includes adjoining suites, a kitchenette, a dining area, two bathrooms, a whirlpool, a sitting area, and a private balcony.
  • The presidential two-bedroom suite is 2,000 square feet and ideal for groups or families. It has a master bedroom, sitting area, full bath, whirlpool tub, and private balcony. The second bedroom has two queen beds, a bath, a whirlpool tub, and a private balcony. The large living area has a sofa bed, kitchen, dining area, guest bathroom, and balcony.

I stayed in the master one-bedroom suite with a comfortable king-size bed. While I enjoyed the ample space that felt like my own apartment, the suite could work for a romantic getaway with my partner and me or a girls’ trip.

Although I didn’t use the kitchen facilities, I appreciated having a fully stocked kitchen with pans, plates, cups, bowls, a working stove, and a full refrigerator. As someone with dietary restrictions who typically enjoys cooking my own food, it was nice to have this option.

Other accommodation options

  • Residence suites that villas best for families or large groups
  • El Encanto suites offer more amenities, such as a private pool
Round wooden table with chairs and a kitchen in the background

The room also came with house shoes and a robe, which I enjoyed lounging around in, between activities. The robes can also come in handy for a girl’s trip when you’re preparing to go out for the night.

I appreciated toiletries such as body wash, lotions, shampoo, and conditioner, all of which were locally made in Yucatan.

My favorite part of the suite was the view from the balcony overlooking the property and the ocean. The suite has two balconies, one connected to the living room and the other to the master bedroom.

It’s the perfect spot to catch the sunrise or the sunset. You can have a relaxing afternoon on the balcony with a book and a cup of coffee.

Milagro Spa Experience

Once I got settled into my room, my mission was to stay in relaxed mode for the entirety of my trip.  So, my first stop was the Milagro Spa.

It’s important to get to the spa about 15 minutes before your appointment to go over allergies and get a preview of the facility.

The spa was pleasantly quiet when I walked in. The staff kindly assisted me to my locker, where I created my personal code to store my belongings. The spa also provided a soft robe and sandals during my visit.

My favorite spa amenities had to be the clothes drawer. An electrically powered device about the size of a small kitchen trash can, it draws clothes in minutes. I thought this was so convenient, as many of my clothes get wet. I could try them on and be on my way.

My spa experience started with an hour-long full-body massage. At the beginning of the massage, I was asked about the type of pressure I preferred, and my masseuse checked in periodically to ensure my comfort. It felt like every worry or care was massaged out of my body.

The spa offers various types of spa experiences, including:

  • Deep Tissue Massage
  • Relaxing Massage
  • Sports Massage
  • Body Scrubs and Wraps
  • Facials
  • Nail Treatments

After the massage, I wanted to stay on cloud 9, so I took full advantage of the spa facilities. The spa recommends a hydrotherapy session, which includes moving through the steam room and sauna, refreshing yourself with cold showers, dipping in the jacuzzi, and floating in the outdoor pool. They have a recommended procedure posted on the wall. I personally like mixing and matching my experiences.

Amenities

Since the focus of my trip was wellness, I took full advantage of the different amenities the property offers.

Adults-only pool and bar

Hacienda Encantada provides ample opportunity to soak up the sun and relax with three large pools. I spent most of my time at the adults-only pool. Situated in the middle of the pool is El Patio Bar and Restaurant. Here, you can experience various dining methods. You can eat at the bar or have your food brought to you while you relax in your lounge chair. You can also enjoy a drink at the bar submerged in the pool.

When I ordered food, I found it faster to go up to the bar and order versus waiting for someone to attend to me at my beach chair. I was a big fan of their smoothies and crab cakes.

Two plates of food, including crab cakes and sauce, are on one plate. Toasted sandwich and french fries on another.
Plate on the left: Turkey sandwich. Plate on the right crab cakes with a sweet and sour sauce. Photo credit: Kiersten Brown

I was lucky to find a lounge chair, cliffside that was facing the ocean. While relaxing in my chair, I’d occasionally fall into a trance, watching the waves crash into the rocks along the shoreline.  For anyone visiting, I highly recommend ending your day poolside, where you can watch the sunset on the ocean horizon.

While the property is next to the ocean, I was surprised to find that there aren’t any accessible beaches surrounding it. However, you can go into town and take a boat to an accessible and swimmable beach such as Medano Beach, Cabo’s most popular swimming beach.

Besides lounging at the pool, there are other activities you can

  • Morning yoga classes
  • Visiting the fitness center
  • Basketball, Volleyball and Tennis courts
  • Biking trails
  • Horseback riding

On certain nights, there are magic shows for families and Fridays there is the Temazcal experience, a traditional Mexican spiritual and cleansing ritual with many mental and wellness benefits.

Where to eat

The resort has 9 restaurants on-site, and the prices are shown for guests not on the all-inclusive plan.

Breakfast buffet at Las Marias

I frequented Las Marias because of the variety of breakfast foods available. The restaurant offers a variety of delicious options for almost everyone’s taste. Some of the plates I couldn’t get enough of were the fried potatoes with bell peppers, fluffy scrambled eggs, tropical fruit, pancakes and French toast, and Mexican-style pastries. I particularly like their green juice, but they offered mimosas if you wanted something more celebratory.

Because I got to the restaurant relatively early, I secured a table outside that overlooked the beautiful ocean, creating a calming start to the day.

Other breakfast spots include:

 Lunch and dinner options

Since I started my days with a big breakfast, I took it easy for lunch most days and ate at the restaurants on site. Some of the restaurants included

Parthenon

The last dinner of the trip was at the Parthenon (Barolo) restaurant for a torch-lit dinner with a specialty menu. Every dish was put together like a work of art.

My taste buds were delighted after tasting the catch of the day, which was decorated with various herbs and spices and accompanied by carrots and mussels. I also sipped on sweet wine to help me wash down my meal. To complete my dining experience, I had a tart, sweet lemon sorbet for dessert.

Los Deseos

To start, I ordered Salmon and Mango Aguacate, a cut-up piece of salmon mixed with cucumber, red onion, avocado, black sauce, and oregano oil. The fish was fresh, and the extra toppings added a pop of flavor and texture.

For my main dish, I got the Lobster Pozolo, a lobster broth with Cacahuazintle corn served with lime, onion, and chilli on the side. I’m a fan of pozole but had never had it with lobster, so I was eager to try it out.

For dessert, we had a caramelized corn cake, which melted my mouth with the perfect balance of not being too sweet and just being sweet enough. I also tried the Avocado Mouse, which provided an interesting texture but wasn’t too sweet.

If you decide to have dinner in town, the Sky Bar at the Marina Fiesta Resort, Hacienda Encantada’s sister resort, is great for a nightcap. You can have a tropical drink with a luminous view of the harbor.

Things to do outside of the resort

While there are many things to do on the property, it’s worth exploring things to do in town.

Boat experience

Sailing on the Pacific Ocean was among my favorite and most refreshing activities. Yachts Cabo took us on a rejuvenating yacht experience, where we cruised the coastline and marvelled at the beautiful rock formations that jetted out of the water. We even spotted a sea turtle shyly passing us by.

For part of our experience, we stopped the boat in the middle of the ocean to swim in the clear blue waters. Swimming in the sea in October was the perfect temperature—not too warm, and I felt like I could have stayed there for hours.

Other experiences to try in Cabo San Lucas

Apart from the boat experience, there are various water and land activities to do in Cabo San Lucas. Whether your wellness journey is focused on peace, joy, or excitement, there is an activity for you. Here’s what the city has to offer

  • ATV riding
  • Fishing
  • Sunset cruises
  • Golfing
  • Horseback riding
  • Dolphin swimming

Final thoughts

Overall, Hacienda Encantada is a beautiful and relaxing getaway that can make any vacation feel like a slice of heaven.

Despite there being 900 islands stretching over 1,400 miles of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, less than a dozen islands have hotels or resorts. None of them truly compare to a stay at Lizard Island Resort – an immersive experience amidst the beauty of the reef with a high price that makes this a once-in-a-lifetime experience for all but the richest few.

The resort is the sole vacation property on Lizard Island, part of Lizard Island National Park, the only continental island group close to the outer barrier reef. At the northern section of the Great Barrier Reef and a few hundred miles south of Papua New Guinea, the reefs are currently in stellar condition and rarely visited.

Lizard Island Resort is an ideal choice for those seeking a retreat far from the crowds of the mainland. Snorkelers and scuba divers have quick access to reefs right around the island and can journey out by boat for full-day trips to the outer reef, considered the most spectacular coral reef of the Great Barrier Reef. At the top of the island’s dramatic peak at more than 1000 feet, visitors can see the contrast of the rugged, unpopulated interior against the blue waters around the island that offer unspoiled reefs teeming with fish darting among vividly colored coral gardens. The all-inclusive resort offers elegant accommodations, gourmet dining and a wide range of activities for guests to explore the marine life and the natural beauty of the island and its secluded beaches.

However, choosing a stay in Lizard Island is a significant financial decision. The room rate for one night is easily more than the standard economy roundtrip airfare from any U.S. city to Australia. The cost to fly round-trip to Lizard Island from Cairns – the only means of scheduled transportation –  is almost $1000 per person. Added all together, choosing a visit to Lizard Island is for a very special occasion or for someone who has just won the lottery.

For my wife and I returning to Australia 30 years after our honeymoon, the decision to stay at Lizard Island Resort was primarily based on the resort’s location halfway between the mainland and the Outer Reef, with the hope of reaching the famous diving spot, the Cod Hole, to see gentle potato cod the size of humans. The only other option to visit Outer Reef dive sites and the Cod Hole is via a liveaboard boat which typically requires a full week – more time than we wanted to allocate in order to see other Australian cities and attractions.

Organizing a Trip to Lizard Island

After booking flights from the US, Lizard Island logistics took precedence over choosing activities and hotels in Sydney and Melbourne.

To get to Lizard Island, East Air offers service on 6-passenger or 9-passenger prop planes or jets with two daily departures from Cairns at 11 am and 2 pm and return flights at 12:25 pm and 3:25 pm. While it is possible to get to the island in a single day from Sydney, we planned to spend a full day and night in Cairns on the mainland, the hub of most tourist activities in the northeast province of Queensland, and to take a day-long boat trip from Cairns to the reef. Being in Cairns enabled us to book the 11 am flight to the island, allowing plenty of time to spend the afternoon snorkeling from the beach to the nearby Clam Gardens to see giant colorful clams that can weigh up to 440 pounds. To reach Sydney in one day on the return journey, we planned to leave on the first flight out, connecting in Cairns and traveling to Sydney on one of the last flights out to avoid a night at an airport hotel.

Complicating our planning was the resort’s requirement that all scuba divers wait 24 hours from their last dive before flying on the East Air plane which is not pressurized. Further, the resort only offers full-day tours to the Cod Hole every other day. That meant we had to plan the full-day dive trip near the beginning of our stay, rather than the end. After considerable emails back and forth to check on availability, we finalized our visit and started to plan the rest of our trip with stays at seven other hotels.

Where Lizard Island Gets Its Name

Lizard Island and nearby islands are rich in cultural meaning for the Dingaal Aboriginal people and contain sacred sites including initiation, ceremonial and story sites. The Aboriginals used the island mainly for ceremonial purposes, not permanent settlements, so when English Lieutenant James Cook arrived in 1770 and climbed the peak to survey the waters, he thought the island was uninhabited. Cook gave the island its current name in recognition of the yellow-spotted monitor lizard which can often be seen around the island today. More than 40 species of birds inhabit the island group, including osprey, terns and seagulls.

Simple, Comfortable Rooms with Porches

With only 40 rooms spanning Anchor Bay and Sunset Beach, the resort never feels crowded. From least to most expensive, the room options are garden view, ocean view, beachfront suites with daybeds, ocean view with heated plunge pool, the Pavilion (two guests max) and Oceanview Villas (up to four guests).

The rooms are plush, but not overly luxurious, with a bed, desk and chair and a wide balcony or patio, all with a partial or full view of the ocean. There are hair dryers, a fully stocked mini-bar with soft drinks, water and beer, a refilled snack basket, water bottles to use for boat trips and a pillow menu with eight different types of pillows to ensure a good night’s sleep. Individually controlled air-conditioners and ceiling fans keep the rooms at a pleasant temperature. Outside it’s hot and humid all year round. Fortunately, there are plenty of electrical outlets to plug in phones and the resort offers converters for US electronics. Wifi is available for free. It’s critical because there is no cell reception on the island.

SheBuysTravel Tip: Don’t be bashful. Ask the staff to change your minibar to fill it with drinks you prefer.

Grab some meals from the Salt Water Restaurant at Lizard island Resort.

All-Inclusive Dining plus the Marlin Bar

The Salt Water Restaurant is part of the resort’s main building and where a full breakfast (with table service), lunch and dinner are served. A bar adjoins the space. At each meal, guests choose from two appetizers, four or five entrees and desserts. Wine and cocktails are included in the all-inclusive price. My wife and I sampled many local favorites such as barramundi and snapper, plus curried dishes. We occasionally strayed from the set menu and asked for mixed-up courses. The chef was always obliging.

There is an opportunity to have a private meal in a small pavilion at the beachfront. However, be aware that the biting midges can be fearsome, especially late in the afternoon and at sunset.

With notice, the resort’s culinary team will pack a picnic hamper for day-long excursions. For most of the year, the Marlin Bar is open Tuesdays and Fridays, where guests mingle with staff, some of the four permanent workers at the island’s research center or “boaties” – boaters who have stopped at Anchor Bay. During the height of marlin season in October and November, the Marlin Bar is open every day.

Room service is available from 7 am to 9:30 pm and is part of the all-inclusive rate.

Ocean Activities

Most people have come to swim, dive or snorkel in the warm waters at the reefs that surround the island. At Anchor Bay in front of the hotel, guests can walk right into the water. On our first snorkel from the beach, we immediately saw two large turtles and swam up to several small coral reefs. Via water, walking or a short dinghy ride is Watson’s Bay and the Clam Garden where dozens of large giant clams can be seen in a large area cordoned from boats. Everyone who stays on the island makes a point of at least trying to snorkel this section.

The Beach Club is where guests go to plan their water sports activities. Included in the cost of the stay is the use of snorkeling gear such as masks, fins, booties and skin suits which are highly recommended because stinging and potentially deadly jellyfish thrive off the Australian coast.

Lizard Island Resort Amenities

  • Small dinghies to travel around the island for an afternoon on a private beach
  • Paddleboards
  • Clear-bottom paddle kayaks
  • Drop off and pick off to nearby sandy beaches such as the Clam Garden to see giant clams

Guests can arrange for these services:

  • Shared half-day or reef tours for snorkelers and scuba divers on different boats
  • Private snorkeling tours, fishing, diving and sunset cruises
  • Sea darts (sea bobs) – a motorized water/diving scooter
  • Scuba lessons for new divers

Make reservations months in advance for scuba diving/snorkeling trips and private charters because the resort strictly limits group sizes.

The staff tries hard to accommodate special requests especially when dealing with small groups with varying skill levels and high expectations. Unfortunately for us, our long-planned trip to the Cod Hole never materialized. Despite an unfavorable weather forecast, the captain gave it a go, but 15 minutes into the hour-long trek he had to turn back because of fierce winds and rough seas. Nevertheless, the diving and snorkeling at these reefs reminded us of the reef we remembered seeing 30 years ago, but that has diminished due to storms and climate change in many places closer to the mainland.

SheBuysTravel Tip: A short distance from the Clam Garden is the more interesting Watson’s Wall reef. While the beach staff recommends an escorted guide for hire to the Wall, experienced snorkelers will have no trouble exploring this site. For free, staff will provide drop off and pick up to the beach near Watson’s Wall. Just ask!

Hiking Around the Island

Naturalists offer free walking tours of Pandanus Track and Chinaman’s Ridge to Watson’s Bay where we spotted bats hanging in the trees, monitor lizards and stinging ants that seem to be the scourge of much of Queensland as evidenced by the billboards on the mainland warning of their danger.

At the front desk, there’s a map of other hikes – the arduous climb up to the peak at Cook’s Look (so named for the English sailor), a level walk to the blue lagoon with beautiful white sand at the southern end of the island and a trek along the road to the non-profit research station. Book a private tour through the front desk.

Dip in the Heated Pool or Enjoy the Spa

Set off the beach and away from the main building, the heated swimming pool is in a secluded spot that is seldom frequented by guests. Next to the pool is a gift shop and the Essentia Day Spa which offers massages, body scrubs and facials.

Work out in the gym during your stay in the Lizard Island Resort.

Work Out 24/7 at the Fitness Center or Hit a Tennis Ball

The 24-hour gym is in a stand-alone, air-conditioned building with free weights, yoga mats, a weight machine with three stations and cardio equipment with two treadmills, two bikes and two Stairmasters. It’s adequate for keeping fit, especially for someone like me who has traveled to the island to swim and hike.  Next door is the rarely used tennis court.
