My first trip to Mobile, Alabama, included a special stay at the very first Hyatt Studios in the country. I’ve stayed at plenty of Hyatt hotels in the past, but this is Hyatt’s first upper midscale extended stay brand, in addition to brands such as Hyatt Place and Hyatt House.. It’s great for remote workers who are always on the go or individuals on a road trip who want to take a long pit stop. If you’re on the hunt for a place to stay close to Mobile that’s clean and affordable, then Hyatt Studios Mobile may be your new favorite hotel.

This trip was hosted. All opinions expressed are entirely my own.

Pros:

  • Free self-parking for guests
  • 24/7 fitness center
  • Ideal for extended stays (two weeks to a month)
  • Early complimentary breakfast starting at 4:30 am
  • Close to downtown Mobile

Cons:

  • Housekeeping service every eight days
  • In a secluded part of town

SheBuysTravelTip: If you have laundry to do during your stay, the first wash cycle is free. That said, you need to have your own detergent as there isn’t a machine to purchase.

Rooms at Hyatt Studios Mobile / Tillmans Corner

The rooms are all suite style with the option to have one king or two queen beds. The rooms are clean, modern, well-lit and spacious, perfect for those extended stays and large travel parties.

In the room, you’ll also find the following amenities:

  • Full-size refrigerator
  • Microwave
  • Stovetop
  • Work desk
  • Dishwasher
  • Cooktop
  • Coffee and tea maker
  • Full-size mirror
  • Free Wifi
  • Pots and pans
  • Paper towels
  • Utensils

In the bathroom, you’ll find a hairdryer alongside body wash, shampoo and conditioner.

My favorite part of the room was the couch next to the bed and the 55-inch HDTV. My only real qualm was with the air conditioner. It shut off a few times during the night and I had to finagle it to get it to stay cool at points.

SheBuysTravel Tip: As someone who packs pretty lightly, having a quality hairdryer was a bonus as I didn’t need to bring my own.

Are you ready to explore off the beaten path? Let us inspire you!

Amenities at Hyatt Studios Mobile / Tillmans Corner

Aside from the in-room amenities at Hyatt Studios Mobile, there were several property amenities for guests to take advantage of during their stay. For starters, the 24/7 fitness center and laundry room were amazing. It’s super convenient having a place on-site to work out and get chores done, especially if you’re staying for several nights.

There’s no pool, however, there is a nice outdoor patio area with seating and grills. If you wanted to make burgers or put on a steak, then there’s the ability to do that on-site. For added convenience, there’s a 24/7 mart in the lobby with beverages, snacks, medications and toiletries.

Food at Hyatt Studios Mobile / Tillmans Corner

Three pieces of artwork and a large breakfast bar with coffee carafes, creamers and organizers with fruit and granola bars at at Hyatt Studios Mobile Tillman's Corner

There are no restaurants on-site; however, they do offer complimentary breakfast between 4:30 am and 10 am. The selection consists of chocolate and banana nut muffins, fruit and granola bars. There are breakfast items such as sandwiches and yogurt available for purchase too inside the refrigerator section.

If you’re looking to grab a meal nearby, you won’t find many sit-down restaurants; however, there are fast food options in close proximity.

Things to Do Near Hyatt Studios Mobile / Tillmans Corner

I spent the majority of my time at the History Museum of Mobile which had several interesting exhibits on the history of Mardi Gras and a limited-edition puppetry exhibition.

Additionally, I ended my visit at the USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park where I explored the battleship alongside the fighter planes they had inside.

Other popular attractions in Mobile include:

SheBuysTravel Tip: Hyatt Studios Mobile is only a short 15- to 20-minute drive to downtown Mobile, depending on traffic.

Getting to Hyatt Studios Mobile / Tillmans Corner

Hyatt Studios Mobile is a 20-minute car ride from the airport and it’s pretty easy to get to with rideshare or a rental car. Although Mobile is a pretty bustling area, you might find it difficult to get a car after 9 pm or even early in the morning if you need to catch a flight.

SheBuysTravel Tip: I highly recommend scheduling a rideshare in advance if you don’t have a rental car to ensure you make your flight on time.

Set amid London’s gleaming business towers, The Westin London City stands out for its innovative architecture. With a main entrance at street level, guests step into a luminous lobby encased by floor-to-ceiling glass, unveiling sweeping views of the Thames River and the historic Globe Theatre beyond. Ingeniously, the hotel’s main block of guest rooms is suspended and built above Upper Thames Street, creating direct access both from the riverside walkway and a park leading to Queen Victoria Street.

The writer was hosted.

The Westin London City is ideal for:

  • Business guests attending City of London meetings, events or shows near St. Paul’s Cathedral, which is a 5-10 minute walk away.
  • Travelers prioritizing wellness and fitness during their London stay
  • Couples seeking a sophisticated, adult-oriented experience

SheBuysTravel tip: The check-in desk is on an upper floor, so the relatively quiet ground-level lobby space overlooking the Thames River makes an ideal place for a small group business meeting.

Enjoy Riverside Location Near Major Attractions

The ground floor lobby of The Westin London City has a stunning view across the Thames River toward Shakespeare's Globe theatre and other Bankside attractions.

With a coveted riverside address at the heart of the business district, The Westin London City puts guests within walking distance of:

  • St. Paul’s Cathedral, one of London’s iconic landmarks
  • Millennium Bridge, with pedestrian access to the Tate Modern and Shakespeare’s Globe
  • The financial hub of the City, including Leadenhall Market, Mansion House and restaurants and bars at Sky Garden at The Walkie-Talkie building.
  • Blackfriars and Mansion House underground stations for easy transport connections

Read our story on the City of London for more details about all the attractions within a 20-minute walk of the hotel.

SheBuysTravel Tip: For a quick way to Blackfriars transit hub without crossing a road, follow the walkway in front of the hotel along the river.

Discover How Modern Design Meets Local Heritage

Once guests have managed to unglue themselves from the riverside view at the ground level, they take elevators to the main lobby on the fourth floor. They arrive through a distinctive glass-and-stone façade and discover interiors blending natural woods, golden hues and calming botanical artwork. The open-plan lobby has several sitting areas for guests waiting for rooms or relaxing later in the day.

Because the City of London is primarily a business district, at night streets are quiet and safe even when walking back in the dark after a late dinner. On a recent trip, throughout the day just outside the hotel’s entry lobby, I often saw single female joggers along the narrow walkway on the north bank of the Thames.

Guests consistently laud:

  • Professionalism and warmth of the staff

Over the years, I’ve visited Bellingham, Washington, on my way to the San Juan Islands and Canada, and more than once for a quick getaway. Every time I’m in the city, I stay in a different hotel, just for the experience — and so I can write reviews like this one. It’s part of exploring all a city has to offer.

Some of Bellingham’s hotels offer views of the bay, while others are closer to local attractions. Some are hip, and others are romantic. Here are the best hotels for a comfortable, relaxing stay.

Portions of this trip were hosted. All opinions expressed are entirely my own.

New York’s 11 Finger Lakes dangle like bracelet charms from the state’s outstretched arm. I recommend visiting the region for its epic gorge hiking, extremely drinkable dry Rieslings and historic associations with women’s suffrage and the Underground Railroad. But it’s also a relaxing destination to kick back for an autumn “me-moon” — my annual fall tradition — at the Lake House on Canandaigua.

Editor’s Note: The writer was hosted.

First Impressions of The Lake House on Canandaigua

I try to schedule a getaway in the fall. It’s a seasonal reset I need to transition from summer to the hectic holidays. For my annual “me-moon,” I seek out boutique spa resorts with a casual, luxurious atmosphere where I’ll feel comfortable as a solo guest.

Approaching the complimentary valet, I was getting all the Joanna Gaines’ Magnolia feels. The privately owned Lake House on Canandaigua features 124 rooms and suites located in the main house and two “cottages.”

There’s even a picture-perfect greenhouse set in a kitchen garden near the lobby doors. I’ll be sending a wish list picture to Santa.

Let us inspire your travels! Sign up for our newsletter now.

Keep the diamonds. My idea of the perfect gift is a classic country greenhouse. Photo credit: Cathy Bennett Kopf

The Lake House sits on a former Sheraton Motor Lodge site, purchased in 1994 by the Sands family, founders of the Constellation Brands beverage empire. The new resort debuted in 2020 and honors the legacy of the past by featuring 1970 — the year the original hotel was constructed — in its logo.

What I loved:

  • Friendly, attentive staff create a “welcome home” atmosphere
  • Reasonable resort fee includes an assortment of luxury perks
  • Heated lakefront pool is a decadent year-round treat

What I’d change:

  • Add some cozy touches to the guest room decor
  • Offer complimentary lobby coffee service

Rooms at the Lake House

A spacious Cottage King suite was a heavenly haven for my solo stay. It’s hard to resist stretching out on the deep couch in the suite’s parlor for a nap. It doubles as a twin sleeper for families. The outside deck with Adirondack chairs, tables and canal view was my go-to sunrise spot.

Hand-crafted furniture is from The Brooklyn Home Company, a contemporary design, decor and art studio owned by younger members of the Sands family. Every element looked beautiful and felt wonderful to the touch.

I longed for a pop of color in a pillow or throw to cozy the space. However, my daughter strongly disagreed when she saw my pictures. She loved the warm white Scandinavian-crisp aesthetic.

Then she asked when we were returning for a mother-daughter getaway.

Vintage style washstand sink with mirror, towels and robe featuring the Lake House on Canandaigua logo.
The suite bathroom features a freestanding tub, huge shower and a pair of vintage washstand vanities for a spa-like feel. Photo credit: Cathy Bennett Kopf

A large built-in wardrobe occupies the suite’s foyer and houses room amenities, including:

  • Coffee station
  • Drawers and closet
  • Safe
  • Ironing board
  • Full-length mirror
  • Plush robes

SheBuysTravel Tip: I’m not a fan of in-room Nespresso machines. They’re loud and I’ve yet to find a pod that delivers the taste/caffeine combo I need in the morning. Fellow addicts should head to The Library in the main building to purchase a true cup o’ joe; they start serving at 7.

Dining at the Lake House

Exterior of the Sand Bar restaurant at the Lake House on Canandaigua with lush landscaping and outdoor umbrellas.
The Sand Bar is a casual hangout spot for lunch and dinner on the lake. Photo credit: Cathy Bennett Kopf

The Lake House has the following dining options on-property:

  • Sand Bar – casual lunch, dinner; indoor/outdoor seating
  • The Library – intimate Main Building bar/lounge, light breakfast and snacks available
  • Rose Tavern – chef-driven year-round destination dining
  • Pool Grill – seasonal lunch and snacks
  • In-room dining

SheBuysTravel Tip: Sand Bar and Rose Tavern are Resy restaurants, eligible for the 2025 AmEx Platinum dining credits if you use the card to pay.

The Sand Bar

Three mahi mahi tacos, bowl of colorful slaw, and a lavender cocktail at The Sand Bar at the Lake House on Canandaigua.
Mahi mahi tacos and rainbow slaw combine for a tropical bite at the Sand Bar. Photo credit: Cathy Bennett Kopf

“Is the coleslaw homemade?” My family groans when I ask. Since I was traveling solo, I questioned my server a little louder than usual and was delighted to learn it was. The Sand Bar was bumping on an October Sunday evening with temperatures in the high 70s, a wonderful treat for upstate NY.

The casual dining menu features salads, handhelds and several mains that crossover from the more formal Rose Tavern. Expect tropical touches from Executive Chef Garrette Gray, who comes to the Lake House from Florida. The ideal complement to my mahi mahi tacos was a lavender coconut mocktail.

SheBuysTravel Tip: Love a bite? Don’t hesitate to ask Chef Gray for the recipe. I can’t wait to replicate the Lake House coleslaw at home.

Rose Tavern

Rose Tavern is the year-round breakfast, lunch and dinner restaurant at the Lake House. The indoor dining room is flanked on opposite sides by a wall-length bar and open kitchen. Additional seating options include a glassed-in terrace and outdoor patio.

Beet and heirloom tomato salad with ricotta goat cheese at Rose Tavern in Canandaigua, NY
I never pass up a beet salad, especially when paired with heirloom tomatoes and ricotta goat cheese. Photo credit: Cathy Bennett Kopf

The dinner menu rotates seasonally and features local products, including produce plucked from the Lake House kitchen garden. Homegrown tomatoes, for example, are used to create the red sauce featured with appetizer meatballs and entree rigatoni. FYI, don’t skip the pillowy Parker House dinner rolls. They’re worth the carb splurge.

SheBuysTravel Tip: If you love gardening, take a minute to chat with John Faerber. Director of Horticulture, Landscape and Floral He conducts seasonal garden tours, but he’ll happily share tips and plant picks if you catch him by the greenhouse or around the grounds.

The Library

I found my cozy at the Lake House in the Library Bar, the resort’s Main Building lounge. Continental breakfast options, snacks and coffee are available for purchase, in addition to a full-service bar.

Canandaigua is Buffalo Bills country. It was fun to cheer, then groan, with a crowd of “Bills Mafia” fans as they watched their football team lose its first game of the season.

Things to Do at the Lake House

I stayed on-property for most of my time at The Lake House and happily filled my two days with a variety of activities, some included and some add-ons.

Book a Treatment at the Willowbrook Spa

Light pours into the resort’s Willowbrook Spa lounge. Don’t short your pre- and post-treatment time here. Open to resort and day guests, the spa has a complete menu of massages, body treatments, facials and salon services.

The spa has two outdoor barrel saunas available to book. They’re positioned for maximum lake views with showers to alternate heat and cold hydro experiences.

Swim… Even When it’s Snowing!

Outdoor heated swimming pool overlooking Canandaigua at the Lake House in New York's Finger Lakes
I cried a little when I climbed out of the pool, knowing it was probably my final swim of the season. Photo credit: Cathy Bennett Kopf

The resort’s lakefront pool is heated year-round so you can dip and dive whatever the weather. I blissfully bounced between the hot tub and pool, knowing that I was soaking up October’s final golden sun rays.

Greet the Day with a Stretch

Ease into your days at the Lake House in the Yoga Studio, located on the third floor of the North Cottage. Instructor Suzanne Frazer leads a series of classes— yoga, meditation and stretching — accompanied by soothing chimes and crystal singing bowls.

Don’t expect a vigorous flow series. Suzanne is adept at reading the room and delivering an experience that works for a wide range of guests. For me, her thoughtful explanations about ways to improve joint health were lasting takeaways.

SheBuysTravel Tip: The small studio accommodates 8 guests. Sign up in advance on the website or at the front desk to guarantee your spot in the complimentary classes.

Suzanne also conducts 2-hour craft workshops at the resort. One popular option safely combines a brown liquor tasting with woodburning. You can also paint your own version of Canandaigua’s historic boathouses. It’s not a paint-by-numbers experience. Suzanne provides a light outline but guests are encouraged to bring their own flair to the scene.

Take a Canandaigua Cruise

The Lake House offers seasonal cruises aboard its luxury pontoon boat. The relaxing 1.5-hour sail circles Canandaigua, the 4th largest of the 11 Finger Lakes, providing peeks at grand estates, swimming coves and distant hills.

Things to Do Near the Lake House

The Lake House is a destination resort. So don’t feel like you need to plan a bunch of activities off-property. But, if you do want to explore, here are a few things to do nearby.

Tour the Sonnenberg Gardens

Open from May 1 through October 31, the Sonnenberg Gardens and Mansion State Historic Park is a must-see for history buffs and flora fans. The 50-acre estate, constructed as a summer residence, includes a Queen-Anne style mansion, nine formal gardens, cafe and gift shop.

Taste the Finger Lakes at New York Kitchen

New York Kitchen is a not-for-profit organization promoting the bounty of the Empire State. It’s a 5-minute walk from the Lake House and one of its corporate partners. I popped in on a Sunday at 6 pm. Drag bingo had just started in the educational theater, a sold-out curry-making class was scheduled for later in the test kitchen and the tasting room was full of guests sampling flights of New York whites, rosés and reds.

Shop Main Street

Canandaigua’s Downtown Shopping District is located along its historic Main Street. There’s a browsable mix of home decor, gift and clothing boutiques plus a variety of restaurants. I also suggest you head off Main Street to explore the local Wegman’s, The grocery chain, founded in 1916 in Rochester, NY, routinely ranks as one of the best in the country.

Walk the Kershaw Park Trail

The 1-mile-long trail hugs the Canandaigua shoreline and is ideal for an early morning or late evening walk. There’s a large children’s playground and the swimming beach is open from Memorial Day through late August.

SheBuysTravel Tip: Scoops ice cream stand is located at one end of the Kershaw trail and Twisted Rail Brewing is at the other. Treat yourself at one or both of these Lakeshore Drive establishments.

Getting There

New York’s Finger Lakes occupy the triangle between Rochester, Syracuse and Binghamton. You can fly into a number of regional airports; however, it’s a popular drive destination region.

The Lake House operates a shuttle service. Fee-applicable airport transfers and winery tours can be arranged. In-town drop-offs and pickups are complimentary.

In this series, I’ll introduce one fabulous destination and show you where to stay, savor and play on two different budgets. Splurge-worthy picks are all about luxury resorts, fine dining and individualized experiences, while budget-friendly ideas offer bargain digs, cheap (but good) eats and free or inexpensive activities to enjoy. I’ll provide money-saving tips (even for the splurges) and ensure that whatever your budget is, you’ll be able to make the most of your vacation.

SheBuysTravel Tip: Skip the airport stress — Lyft’s On-Time Pickup Promise guarantees your scheduled ride shows up within 10 minutes of your pickup time. If it doesn’t? You’ll get Lyft Cash. You can schedule up to 90 days in advance and even lock in your rate. Use code SBT25 to save 25% off ONE scheduled ride to the airport.

Highlights of a Berlin Vacation on Two Budgets

Germany’s capital buzzes with energy and contrasts. It wears its unvarnished history and culture on its sleeve, whether it’s palaces or watchtowers, opera houses or techno clubs or youthfulness or stateliness. And Berlin’s kaleidoscope of offerings can be equally enjoyed on a budget or on a spree.

Luxury: Total cost for two people: $1,825

  • Stay: A fashion-forward boutique hotel set in a former embassy with a sanctuary-like setting, tucked away beside the Tiergarten (the city’s famous central park) and the Berlin Zoo ($725).
  • Savor: A 10-course, terroir-driven tasting menu with wine pairings at a Michelin-starred restaurant ($850).
  • Play:  A day of pampering and indulgence at a Balinese-inspired spa in the center of the city ($250).

Budget: Total cost for two people: $148

  • Stay: A modern hotel with Italian-inspired design and a rooftop terrace steps away from the subway ($100).
  • Savor: Berlin’s signature ‘currywurst’ served with a crisp German lager in the heart of a vibrant downtown square (8$)
  • Play: A themed guided bike excursion with a local expert who leads you on a half-day tour of Berlin’s highlights or a specialized tour focusing on the Cold War history. (40$)

Stay: Where to Sleep on Your Berlin Vacation

The elegant lobby of the So/Berlin Das Stue with its marble staircase, cascading light feature and alligator sculpture.

Splurge-worthy Choice: SO/ Berlin Das Stue:

Once serving as the Royal Danish Embassy, Berlin Das Stue stately exterior belies a sleek, playful and original interior of plush textures and original art.

Though the double marble staircases, cascading light feature and alligator sculpture in the lobby might be intimidatingly chic, the staff are personable, approachable and happy to share their expertise. As much as we enjoyed every detail about our stay, it was the people who gave it its home-away-from-home feeling, reflecting its name.

  • Vibe: Sleek and playful with plush textures, original art and helpful friendly staff
  • Location: A leafy, green oasis in the middle of the city, with direct access to the central park and Berlin Zoo, with some rooms overlooking the furry and feathered residents and parkland.
  • Wellness Centre: Features spa treatment rooms, a 46-foot indoor swimming pool and a Finnish sauna.
  • The Library: An elegant but comfortable room equally suitable for working or lounging.
  • Accommodations: All the beautifully designed rooms have high ceilings and in-room  Nespresso machine and minibar. The embassy rooms ($725) and suites have additional features like balconies or terraces and freestanding bathtubs.
  • Restaurants:
    • Carte Blanche: Serves up classic French dishes in an inviting brasserie atmosphere.
    • Stue Bar: Craft cocktails and casual fare to enjoy in their ever-so-fashionable saloon.

Other Splurge-Worthy Options:

  • Hotel Adlon Kempinski ($800): Located beside the iconic Brandenburg Gate, has been the luxurious stay for many rich and famous guests including Einstein, Queen Elizabeth and Michael Jackson.
  • Hotel Oderberger ($200): A converted 19th-century public bathhouse with a 65-foot-long indoor pool underneath a vaulted cathedral-like ceiling, giving its guests a very Berlin experience with an impressive historic setting in one of the city‘s trendiest neighborhoods.
  • Ameron Hotel Abion Spreebogen Waterside ($175): The centrally located, upscale property boasts scenic views of the River Spree and elegant rooms.

Budget-Friendly Choice: Aletto Potsdamer Platz

Opened in 2020, Aletto Potsdamer Platz offers modern comforts and connectivity, making it an ideal base to explore Berlin. With Italian-inspired design, excellent transportation options, and welcoming communal spaces, we never felt as though we were settling for less because of its low price point.

  • Vibe: Contemporary and welcoming with bright, functional design. The atmosphere is relaxed, with guests gathering in shared spaces to eat, play cards, or enjoy a drink.
  • Location: Though the neighborhood is nondescript, the hotel is steps from the Potsdamer Station and in just five stops on the U-Bahn (underground), we stepped off in the historic Mitte district, oohing and aahing at the architecture around us. You can also access the S-Bahn (surface transport) from here.
  • Rooftop Terrace: Features lounge areas, herb and flower beds and views of the Berlin TV Tower.
  • Common Areas: Spacious and social areas include a grassy courtyard, a lobby with a large dining area, and a rec room with foosball and vending machines.
  • Accommodations:  430 rooms in varied categories — from budget-friendly private pods ($70) to spacious family rooms ($100). Rooms are cleverly designed with configurable layouts and hidden storage.
  • Aletto Restaurant: Serves Italian dishes in the large dining room, where guests also gather casually in the evenings. In the mornings, a generous breakfast buffet awaits to fuel your day’s adventure.

SheBuysTravel Money-saving Tip: The Berlin WelcomeCard (starting at $35) provides unlimited transit use for a set number of days. Pick it up at the airport or the central train station. Once activated, all your trips are validated, so there’s no need to fuss with tickets or machines. It also offers discounts to over 200 attractions.

Other Budget-Friendly Accommodations:

  • Also easy on the wallet is the Circus ($100), a popular hostel with an on-site microbrewery and even an exhibit dedicated to David Hasselhoff. It has both dorms and private rooms and its central location provides easy access to the city’s top sights.
  • Other low-cost places to consider include Pension Peters ($110), a friendly, affordable guesthouse in West Berlin, Cat’s Pajamas Hostel ($90), a stylish yet affordable stay in the trendy Kreuzberg neighborhood and Easy Lodges Berlin ($80), quirky, tiny-house style cabins.

Savor: Where to Eat on Your Berlin Vacation

Like the city itself, you can find anything you fancy in Berlin from classic German fare and multicultural dishes served at street stalls to unforgettable Michelin-starred fine dining experiences and everything in between.

Splurge-Worthy Culinary Decadence

For the ultimate Berlin dining experience, our pick is Nobelhart & Schmutzig:

  • Why Go:  Michelin-star rated and a stand out for its originality, ‘vocally local’ philosophy, experiential service and, of course, outstanding food.
  • What to Expect: A 10-course tasting menu that guests enjoy while facing the open kitchen. With only 28 seats, it’s an intimate experience that feels almost like a dinner theater, except the food is the star and the staff are cast.
  • Food: Each course comes with its own origin story and an equally storied wine pairing ($425). I’m salivating just thinking about our meal here.
  • Tip: Tables book up quickly, so reserve before your trip.

SheBuysTravel Tip: If you want more culinary choices, check out the more than 20 Michelin-starred restaurants in Berlin.

Other Dining Options Worth Splashing Out On:

  • KaDeWe, known as the ‘Harrods of Germany’, delights food lovers as much as it does shoppers. Its sixth floor is dedicated to sweet and savoury delicacies with mouth-watering displays of chocolates, patisseries, truffles the size of baseballs, artisan cheese and prepared dishes. Deciding on what to eat from the maze of counters and restaurants can be daunting, but there are no wrong choices.
People sipping cocktails and enjoying the view of the Berlin skyline on the rooftop terrace of Baret, a restaurant on top of the Humboldt Forum.

  • If you’re looking for more traditional German fare, consider Augustiner am Gendarmenmarkt ($60) for plate-size schnitzel, pork knuckle and steins of Bavarian lager. For a meal or drinks with a view, head to Baret ($50), the rooftop restaurant on top of the Humboldt Forum (an arts and cultural museum). High above the city, you can enjoy a cocktail and bites with a bird’s eye view of the Prussian grand institutions on Museum Island.
  • Other stellar choices include: Ristorante Cumberland ($60), upscale Italian fare in a grand setting; Brasserie November ($55), refined French-inspired dining; Berta ($45), Israeli-German fusion with bold flavors; Schnitzelei Wedding ($40), elevated German comfort food and excellent beers.

Cheap Tasty Eats

A stand selling Berlin's quintessential street food, currywurst, in the heart of the city's lively entertainment district.

  • Don’t leave Berlin without trying currywurst, Berlin’s quintessential street food. Declared a national dish, it consists of sliced Bratwurst sausage smothered in curry-flavored tomato sauce. Served at street stands throughout the city, each has its own variation and spice recipe. CurryWolf ($8) has one of the most typical and tastiest versions. We enjoyed every bite with a German lager while people watching at their Ku’damm location, the city’s lively shopping and entertainment district.
  • The unofficial national dish is the doner kebab. Berlin has the biggest Turkish community outside of Turkey and their influence can be tasted at places like Mustafa’s Gemüse Kebap ($8.50), which has as a cult-like following (and usually a long queue) and Imrel Grill ($8), located in the multi-cultural Neukölln  neighborhood.

SheBuysTravel Money-saving Tip: Markets not only provide travellers with a glimpse of local life, but also a place to sample a variety of authentic neighborhood dishes inexpensively. Berlin has some fantastic ones to choose from, including:

  • Hackescher Markt, ideal for quick bites in the historic center
  • Preußenpark (Thai Park), an outdoor market featuring authentic Thai street food
  • Uferhallen food pop-ups, which dishes out casual food and drinks in a cool, artsy courtyard in the up-and-coming wedding district
  • Arminiusmarkthalle, a historic market hall that houses affordable street food stalls and casual eateries.

Play: Things to Do on Your Berlin Vacation

“Whatever you come for, you can find in Berlin,” a local told me when I asked her for recommendations on what to do. Not exactly useful, but she was right. Germany’s capital has a vibrant cultural scene (both traditional and contemporary), distinct personality-driven neighborhoods, a compelling and thought-provoking history and enough activities to keep you busy for a year. Here are some suggestions to get you started:

Activities Worth Splashing Out On

A view of one of the pools at Berlin's luxury Vabali Spa with lounge chairs surrounding it.
Vabali Spa. Photo credit: Vabali Spa
  • An indulgent Day at Vabali Spa: In the center of the city lies a five-acre sanctuary that features ten saunas, three steam baths, four pools, massage/treatment rooms and a lovely Asian-inspired restaurant. Special sessions include sound-bathing and guided meditation ($125). For a true splurge, add on one of their massages or body treatments.
  • Berlin by Trabant Stretch-limo: This private tour not only gives you a chance to see the highlights of Berlin with your own knowledgeable personal guide, but also do it in a cult classic vehicle. The Trabant series of automobiles were manufactured in East Germany from 1957 to 1991 and became symbolic of life in the GDR (former East Germany). Cost is approximately $300 per group of up to five people.

SheBuysTravel Tip: Like most of the country’s spas, Vabali is ‘textile-free,’ meaning no bathing suits allowed. Robes are worn for moving between areas but removed before entering the pools, steam rooms and saunas. Guests sit on towels that are placed so no part of the body (including the feet) touches the surface directly. Though it challenged our North American sensibilities somewhat, the casual nudity in a spa setting is very much the cultural norm here and overall it was a relaxing way to experience a slice of life in Germany (though we opted not to go in pools).

Free and Inexpensive Fun

As one of the most affordable cities in Western Europe, Berlin is a frugal traveler’s wonderland with a slew of low cost and free activities to choose from.

  • Pedal through History: Join a guided bike tour with Berlin on Bike that takes you to the city’s best attractions or one that focuses on the Cold War history. We chose the latter and felt goosebumps at moments as we followed parts of the Wall Trail and learned about the wall that encircled the city and divided the world. The tour company also does walking tours ($40).
A view of the fountain and one of the museums on Berlin's famous Museum Island. Families and groups are relaxing on the grassy areas, enjoying the ambiance.
Museum Island. Photo credit: Jennifer Merrick
  • Exploring Museumsinsel (Museum Island): Bordered by the Spree River and the Kupfergraben Canal, this UNESCO World Heritage site is a literal island. Five world-class museums make the island their home: Altes Museum (Old Museum), Neues Museum (New Museum), Alte Nationalgalerie (Old National Gallery), Bode Museum and Pergamon Museum.
  • Not only are they each worth checking out on their own merit, but the Museum Island’s grounds are a pleasure to stroll around in. Surrounded by these grand institutions, groups of friends and family lounge on the grass around the fountain, buskers perform and tourists snap selfies. We took a few photos, too (OK -maybe a few dozen).

SheBuysTravel Money-saving Tip: If you’re planning to visit more than a couple of museums, buy a Museum Pass Berlin ($38), which allows free entry to over 30 public museums, including the five mentioned above, for three consecutive days. Note: the pass doesn’t cover private museums like the DDR Museum (though it’s worth the $15 price tag if you’re interested in the social history of former East Germany).

A tourist snaps a group shot in front of the famous mural at Berlin's East Side Gallery.

  • Admire the Art of the East Side Gallery:  This longest stretch of the remaining Berlin Wall is now an outdoor exhibition with murals and messages. Some are whimsical while others are thought-provoking. The most famous — the kiss between Brezhnev and Honecker — still stops visitors in their tracks. After strolling along the wall and admiring the works, we wandered down to the river, where young Berliners and international students lounged in floating hostels and riverside watering holes.
A bench sits in front of a river running through the verdant Tiergarten, Berlin's central park.
Tiergarten. Photo credit: Jennifer Merrick
  • Relax in Berlin’s Leafy Oases:  Germany’s capital is one of the greenest in Europe, with green spaces making up roughly a third of its total area. Tiergarten is the emerald crown jewel of Berlin’s extensive park system with 210 hectares of parkland right in the middle of the city. Once the former hunting grounds of Prussian kings, it’s now enjoyed by locals and visitors alike who come to walk its treelined trails, watch graceful swans swim in its ponds or cycle on its paths, which was exactly what we spent a morning doing.

Other parks to enjoy include: Monbijou Park, an urban beach on the bank of the Spree River; Volkspark Friedrichshain, a city favorite, offering wooded hills and fountains; the  Treptower Park, home to a huge Soviet war memorial; the Körnerpark, a manicured Baroque parkland hidden within Neukölln’s lively streets; and Viktoria Park, famous for its  waterfall.

Delve Deeper into History at these Free Attractions:

Museumgoers look at the suitcases displayed at the Palace of Tears, a free museum in Berlin, located in the former border crossing of the Friedrichstraße railway station.

  • Palace of Tears (Tränenpalast) was named for the tearful farewells that took place at the former border crossing at Friedrichstraße railway station. The museum focuses on the personal — stories of separations, contents of suitcases and small acts of defiance.
  • Walk through the Brandenburg Gate, where the Berlin Wall first fell in November 1989.
  • Scarred by fire, war and the Berlin Wall, the Reichstag is once again the striking home of the German parliament. Norman Foster’s glass dome offers 360° views of the city and its transparency represents openness and accountability of the government. Be sure to pick up a free auto-activated audio guide to learn about the building’s architecture, landmarks and the workings of parliament. Note: Entry is free but should be booked online well in advance and bring ID.

  • The Berlin Wall Memorial is the most comprehensive site dedicated to this period of history with several outdoor exhibits, including the Window of Remembrance, which is dedicated to the people who died at the wall.
  • Opened in 2005, Berlin’s Holocaust Memorial spreads across a five-acre field strewn with 2,711 concrete slabs, forming an eerie, disorienting maze. Cut off from the noise of the city, visitors navigate themselves among the sombre blocks for their own personal journey of remembrance.
  • Checkpoint Charlie, once the main crossing between East and West Berlin for diplomats and foreigners, is now filled with tourists posing for selfies. It’s still worth a visit and the open-air exhibition offers more information on the city’s Cold War history.

Enjoy Musical Experiences Gratis:

  • The Classic Open Air at the Gendarmenmarkt is a highlight for summer visitors and takes place every evening Tuesday through Sunday in the summer. While the main seated area requires a ticket, you can  enjoy the Berlin Symphony Orchestra or the German Opera in one of Berlin’s most beautiful squares from outside the perimeter fencing.
  • The Berlin Philharmonic offers free concerts every Wednesday at 1 PM between September and June.
  • Every Sunday, Mauerpark transforms into a sprawling block party. The main draw is the Bearpit Karaoke, but you’ll also find other free performances scattered throughout the grounds.
  • Berlin hosts over 200 festivals annually, including some of the most anticipated international musical events like Berlinale Live, where celebrated film scores are performed for the cinema-lovers; the pioneering CTM Festival, a celebration of experimental electronic sound; Lollapalooza Berlin, the blockbuster pop and rock weekend; and the popular Fête de la Musique, with hundreds of free concerts across the city.

SheBuysTravel Money-saving Tip:  Websites like Eventbrite and Meetup list all kinds of free events, many in English, that are open to visitors as well as locals.  Also, Berlin’s official tourism site has a Free of Charge page that lists a staggering 772 free permanent and temporary exhibits, galleries and events.

Note: All prices are in US dollars.

Fun Facts about Berlin

  • Berlin has more museums than rainy days (about 170 compared to 106).
  • Currywurst was invented in Berlin in 1949 by Herta Heuwer, who mixed ketchup with British curry powder.
  • Berlin has more than 960 bridges spanning its rivers and canals. And that’s more than Venice.
  • An abandoned airport runway is now a local weekend hangout. The former Tempelhof Airport is now a massive public park, where Berliners picnic, cycle and kitesurf on its runways.
A picture of a Berlin traffic light with the green Ampelmännchen (little traffic light man) next to the city's landmark radio tower.

  • An iconic traffic light figure is a local celebrity. The cheerful Ampelmännchen (little traffic light man) from the GDR era was so beloved that Berliners protested to keep him after reunification. You can now find him on everything from socks to cookie cutters.
  • 2025 marks the 35th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Commemorations include installations and events along the former ‘death strip’.
  • David Bowie lived in Berlin from 1976 to 1978. He famously called the city:

“The greatest cultural extravaganza that one could imagine.”

When You Go:

Berlin is easily accessible, with direct flights to Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) from several major North American cities, including New York, Washington-Dulles, Los Angeles, Miami and Toronto.

The easiest and most cost-effective method to get into the city from BER is the Airport Express (FEX) train. Taxis and ride-sharing services are available but significantly more expensive.

As I entered the elevator for the ride up to my room after a long day of travel, the poster hanging on the elevator wall made me smile. “You choose your perspective. Your perspective shapes your path forward.”

This motivational message – quirky, uplifting, and a little bit stylish – set the tone for my entire stay. And every one of the four elevators in the hotel had a similar poster with the same tagline.

The Sonesta Los Angeles Airport hotel is all about relaxation and taking a beat for yourself. From the spacious, comfortable rooms to the friendly service to the lobby and comfortable seating areas, everything about this hotel is a chance to recharge.

Editor’s Note: The writer was hosted.

Overall Impressions

Located less than a mile from the airport, Sonesta Los Angeles Airport LAX is an excellent choice for families. It balances modern design with practical conveniences – like a free airport shuttle and lots of places to eat.

The hotel recently completed a $42 million dollar renovation, and the results leave no doubt it was money well spent. The lobby and check-in area is upscale, with lots of comfortable seating. Outside the main entrance, there are more cozy areas to relax and even fire pits waiting to be enjoyed; perfect if you are waiting for the airport shuttle or valet to bring your car around.

If you’re flying in or out of Los Angeles and want a comfortable hotel that works for both kids and adults, the Sonesta Los Angeles Airport LAX is a great choice. This large, newly renovated property offers lots of upscale comforts and amenities for an incredibly reasonable room rate.

Pros

  • One of the closest hotels to LAX

  • Four on-site restaurants with a variety of cuisines

  • Spacious, soundproofed guest rooms (important since you’re so close to the airport)

  • 24/7 free airport shuttle service

  • Family-friendly conveniences like in-room refrigerators and room service

  • Pet-friendly hotel ($150 fee per stay)

Cons

  • Parking fees can be pricey
  • Breakfast is not always included in room rates and is expensive if purchased separately
  • There is a heated outdoor pool, but it is very small
  • Busy property with lots of travelers coming and going, making check-in and airport shuttles crowded at peak times

SheBuysTravel Tip: Opt for a room facing the airport for some cool views of planes coming in for a landing. It is quite entertaining and the soundproof windows mean you can enjoy the sights without the sounds.

Accommodations

There are several types of rooms available at the Sonesta Los Angeles Airport LAX, all recently remodeled with either two queen or one king bed. They also have suites available.

We stayed in a Preferred King room on a high floor with a great view of the airport. Our room had a long, horizontal window facing a runway, which we soon realized was for the international terminal, and it was fun seeing all the different airlines from around the world coming in for a landing.

This is also a great place to note that the rooms have excellent soundproofing. Before arriving, we thought it might be loud due to the hotel’s proximity to the airport. But quite the opposite was true; our room was completely quiet, despite the airplanes.

The rooms at Sonesta LAX are modern, clean, and well-designed with a desk and small sofa under the window. The bed was comfortable and had plush bedding. There was a big TV with access to streaming apps, a coffee maker, and a mini fridge – perfect for storing snacks and our restaurant leftovers.

Dining Options at Sonesta LAX

Grab a quick bite at Boulevard Market Café or enjoy something a bit fancier at one of the hotel’s other three restaurants. Photo credit: Gwen Kleist

One of the standout features of this property is its variety of on-site dining:

  • Century Taproom – California-inspired pub fare with craft beer, burgers, steaks, and pizza.
  • Yokoso Sushi Bar – Fresh sushi and sashimi in a sleek setting.
  • Boulevard Market Café – Quick bites like sandwiches, salads, rotisserie chicken, pasta, and pizza—easy options for kids.
  • The Landing Restaurant – Classic American breakfast buffet and à la carte items.
  • Room Service – Available 24/7 for ultimate convenience.

This range of dining options makes it easy to feed the whole family without leaving the hotel.

Our room came with breakfast, so we enjoyed the breakfast buffet at the Landing Restaurant both mornings we were there. The buffet was a fairly standard spread with eggs, fruit, pastries, French toast, and the like. All the food was hot and fresh and we enjoyed it, but I don’t think it would have been worth the $38 per person if it was not included with our stay.

A man in a blue button-down shirt and gray shorts stands at a buffet with serving dishes on one side and sunken serving dishes on the other. Plates are stacked in a cut-out at the front.

You can also help yourself to grab and go items in the Market Café if you don’t have time for a sit-down breakfast.

For dinner, we enjoyed a great meal at Century Taproom. My husband and I shared a big salad and pizza, and it easily could have fed three or four of us. (The fridge in our room came in very handy for leftovers!)

Century Taproom also has a wide variety of steaks, chicken, burgers, sandwiches, and more. Since they make the pizza in a specialty oven right in front of you, that’s what we wanted to try. It was really good! The restaurant also features a full bar.

Hotel Amenities

Whether you’re arriving by car or flying into LAX, the Sonesta Los Angeles Airport LAX offers a variety of onsite amenities to make travel easier.

Here are some of the standout amenities:

  • 24/7 Free Airport Shuttle : Runs every 20–30 minutes. Very handy for arrival or departures without worrying about rides.
  • 24/7 Fitness Center : The fitness center got a complete upgrade during the hotel’s remodel and features state-of-the-art equipment including Peloton bikes.
  • 24/7 Room Service : So you can have a bite no matter what time you arrive.
  • Business Center and Meeting Rooms: if you need a quiet space to work
  • Laundry / Dry Cleaning Services : Always a plus when traveling.

Though it’s relatively small, there is also an outdoor heated pool . Kids can splash off energy after a long flight, while parents relax in a lounge chair. The pool is located on a rooftop off the third floor, making for some nice views.

Things to Do Nearby

Image of the Santa Monica Pier, taken from the end of the pier looking toward the beach, with crowds and umbrellas on the pier and on the beach.
The Santa Monica Pier is one of many L.A. attractions a short drive away from the hotel. Photo credit: Gwen Kleist

While Sonesta is primarily an airport hotel, it’s also a good jumping-off point for L.A. adventures.

Keep in mind however, that dreaded word that shapes everywhere you drive in Southern California: Traffic. Although something might look close on a map, L.A. traffic can make getting there pretty rough. For instance, the weekend we stayed at the Sonesta Los Angeles Airport LAX, my husband and I thought it would be fun to check out the Santa Monica Pier. The 11-mile drive took us nearly 45 minutes.

Traffic concerns aside, the hotel’s central location puts you in close proximity to many of the city’s biggest attractions. Visit the iconic Venice Beach for a day in the sun. Enjoy a thrilling sporting event at SoFi Stadium or a live performance at The Kia Forum , both just a short drive away.

Hollywood and downtown L.A. are both around 30 minutes from the hotel. And you can reach the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim in less than an hour.

Parking at Sonesta LAX

The hotel offers both self-parking and valet parking. While convenient, fees are on the higher side (typical for LAX hotels). The self-parking garage is shared with long-term airport parking and is very secure.

Sonesta Los Angeles Airport LAX self-parking is $50 per night (including in-and-out access), while valet parking is available for $60 plus tax per night .

Final Thoughts

The Sonesta Los Angeles Airport LAX is more than just an airport hotel. It’s a convenient, family-friendly spot that combines comfort, great amenities, and easy access to and from the airport and top L.A. attractions. Whether you’re overnighting before a flight or using it as a base to explore Los Angeles, Sonesta LAX is a smart choice for families.

Times Square requires a little mental prep. Staying there meant preparing myself for noise, energy and a whole lot of people. So when I checked into the Tempo by Hilton Times Square with a colleague for a conference, I was expecting long days and sleepless nights.

But I actually slept. Soundly. In Midtown. The restaurant and bar doubles as a lobby, so there’s a natural hum of activity, but the energy of Times Square stays outside. We each had our own room but they were large enough to fit two people comfortably. The decor is contemporary and minimal but not cold, with a modern bathroom. The closet is more of a rack with no doors but it did come equipped with a steamer.

Standout Features of Tempo by Hilton Times Square

  • Prime location : You’re right in Times Square, close to Broadway, shopping, and conference venues.
  • Surprisingly quiet : Strong insulation keeps most of the chaos outside.
  • Spectacular views : Floor-to-ceiling windows showcase the best of the city.
  • Security presence : Guarded entrance for peace of mind.
  • Friendly, helpful staff : Every interaction was easy and warm.
  • Restaurant in the lobby : Food and drinks without leaving the building.
  • Modern rooms : Plenty of outlets, comfortable beds, and spacious enough for two.

Who This Hotel Works Best For

Tempo by Hilton Times Square is a smart choice for:

  • Business travelers who want convenience without sacrificing sleep.
  • Friends or colleagues attending conferences or shows together.
  • First-time visitors who want to be immersed in the energy of Times Square but still need a calm space to recharge.

First Impressions and Security

I liked being greeted by security at the entrance off of 48th Street. It was reassuring to know only guests and staff were coming in and out and they were always available to point us in the right direction. Check-in was smooth, and the staff is friendly and professional. The bellman is a pro, managing multiple guests with bags quickly and ready with transportation recommendations.

Location You Can’t Beat

Image of the corner of 48th and Broadway in Times Square at night with crowds of people and csars on the street and a Ralph Lauren ad on the building.

Tempo is in Times Square, not “a short walk to” – you’re in it. Our conference was steps away, which made it easy to pop back to the room between sessions. For theater lovers, Broadway shows are around the corner. For shoppers, Fifth Avenue is nearby. Business travelers are well-positioned to get anywhere else in Midtown quickly.

We walked to Tempo from Grand Central Terminal but we could have taken the subway – the train is steps from the hotel’s front door.

Spectacular Views

Night view from the window of Tempo Hilton NYC. In the room are a white bed and upholstered chair and a wall lamp turned on.

I couldn’t get enough of the views. Floor-to-ceiling windows provide a bird’s-eye view of the neon glow of Times Square and the Manhattan skyline. We were on the 11th floor and I looked forward to hanging out in the chair in the window cubby watching the chaos below.

And the rooms are great too: clean, modern and smartly laid out. Outlets and USB ports are plentiful. The bathroom is normal sized with great lighting and although the closet didn’t have doors, it did have a steamer, which I used a lot.

Electronic blinds offer blackout and opaque curtain options but I couldn’t get them to cooperate. It was either full daylight or complete blackout for me. Not a dealbreaker, but it was funny trying to finesse them into a “just a sliver of light” mode.

SheBuysTravel Tip: Request a high-floor room facing Times Square. You might still hear the city below, but the views more than make up for it. It’s the best way to experience the buzz of Times Square without feeling like you’re drowning in it.

The Waldorf Astoria Chicago is a historic 5-star hotel in the affluent and safe downtown Gold Coast district, surrounded by tree-lined streets, upscale eateries and couture shopping. As a frequent world traveler, I was excited for my first visit to the hotel. I’ve visited Chicago previously and this time I took my 21-year-old son who had never visited a big city before.

Writer was hosted for lodging, all opinions are my own.

Pros:

  • Safety with 24/7 security and front door service or valet
  • Concierge service with easy and warm interactions and texts to see if anything was needed
  • Complimentary transportation within a 1-mile radius of the hotel
  • Luxurious guest rooms that are surprisingly quiet
  • Prime location in downtown Chicago

Cons:

  • Parking can be challenging. There is a self-pay garage one block away, or you can pay for the hotel’s valet service.
  • Ride-share services can have waits and steep prices during high traffic times.
  • On-site dining is pricey and area restaurants require advance reservations. Book early and pack snacks!

Are you ready to explore off the beaten path? Let us inspire you!

Unmatched Arrival Experience

Arriving at The Waldorf Chicago felt like we were transported to a royal welcome at a European hotel. Greeted by an expansive cobblestone courtyard with a flower-adorned fountain in the center, my nerves were immediately calmed at this oasis in the bustling city. The staff noticed our arrival and assisted with valet parking and admittance into the hotel lobby. The customer service here is unrivaled and we felt special and welcome in an entirely safe environment.

Luxurious Common Spaces

The black and white lobby of The Waldorf Astoria Chicago Hotel is elegantly adorned with a crystal chandalier.

The star of the grand lobby of The Waldorf Chicago is the incredible sparkling chandelier inspired by fashion icon Coco Chanel and her famed brooch pin. It dangles inside the front entry and is the focal point for all eyes – hanging over the rest of the hotel’s classic black and white interior, highlighted with glorious fresh flowers and the bright hues behind the front desk.

Adjacent to the main lobby is the Peacock Lounge, a sophisticated spot to read or wait for transportation. With rich hues and dark wood, the fireplace and comfortable seating are a nice place to commune outside of your hotel room.

Rooms and Suites

A guest room at The Waldorf Astoria Chicago is an indulgent treat with many uncommon amenities. The crisp black and white details are very chic.
Guest rooms at The Waldorf Astoria Chicago are spacious and have many upscale touches. Photo credit: Lisa Chism

The Waldorf Astoria Chicago features 214 elegantly designed rooms and suites across 19 floors. With Parisian-inspired decor, a private courtyard entrance and terraces and fireplaces in select suites, the stay here is entirely worth it.

Glimpse Inside a Guest Room or Suite:

Deluxe two queen or king: We stayed in a deluxe two-queen room, which seemed more like a suite in a regular hotel. Featuring two luxurious queen beds with 400-thread-count sheets, this elegant room infused with French fashion-inspired décor, had many sophisticated touches.

The bathroom at The Waldorf Astoria Chicago includes a deep soaking tub and a double vanity.

Other room options:

  • Terrace king: offers a private terrace with city vistas
  • Junior suite: features a fireplace and an extra seating area
  • One-bedroom terrace: available as a corner room with a fireplace
  • Larger Astoria Suites: expansive living areas, separate bedrooms and often private terraces and fireplaces
  • Presidential suite: At $9,000 per night, this ultimate indulgence is regularly frequented by celebrities and sports stars. Featuring a chef’s kitchen, multiple hospitality areas, a private bedroom with fireplace and terrace, and an oversized bath with views of the Gold Coast, this is a stylish splurge. The staff treated me to a private tour of this space since it was not reserved during my stay. It was fun to imagine how the rich and famous get to live!

Expect to pay at least $600 per night, depending on room category and dates.

All rooms include:

  • Nespresso machine (I loved starting the day with a cappuccino without leaving my room)

  • Stocked refrigerator, snack drawer and microwave

  • Complimentary daily fresh fruit and bottled water

  • Nightly turn-down service with bedside chocolate

  • Bathrobe and bath slippers

  • Black-out curtains

  • Night light and digital scale in bathroom

  • Work desk with adjustable lamp

  • In-room safe

  • High-speed WiFi and integrated charging ports

  • Windows that crack to let in fresh air. This is not always available in high-rise hotels and was a nice surprise to be able to open a window and hear the city come to life in the morning!

Dining & Beverage

Colorful fruit plate at The Waldorf Astoria Chicago.
The Waldorf Astoria Chicago’s Brass Tack restaurant is well-known for its upscale brunch. Photo credit: Lisa Chism
  • The Brass Tack restaurant blends ambiance with traditional favorites for lunch, dinner and weekend bottomless brunch. A must-try is the signature Waldorf Salad, the classic nut and fruit salad on a bed of lettuce, created at The Waldorf New York City in 1890.
  • Bernard’s offers refined cocktails surrounded by strapping décor for an intimate, stylish bar experience perfect for pre-dinner drinks or a quiet nightcap.

SheBuysTravel Tip: Nearby on Rush Street is The Bellevue, a casual yet upscale eatery with an ample outdoor patio. It’s great for weekend brunch and people watching (you might see an NBA star stroll by or several spoiled dogs with their owners) and offers a mix of good cocktails, brunch faves like eggs Benedict and omelets or lunch/dinner fare.

Amenities

The spa deck at The Waldorf Astoria Chicago with city skyline views is a relaxing escape for spa guests.
The spa deck at The Waldorf Astoria Chicago is a private space for spa guests only. Photo credit: Lisa Chism

Pool: A narrow indoor swimmer’s pool is housed in its own wing with chaise lounges and daybeds for relaxing with a book or magazine. There’s enough room to swim a few laps or simply take a refreshing dip.

Fitness: State-of-the-art equipment and personalized Pilates classes in a reformer studio. This is not your typical hotel fitness center. This fitness space is expansive with multiple cardio machines, free weights, strength training equipment and mat equipment. No other fitness classes were offered, and Pilates classes did have a fee.

The Spa

  • Traditional therapeutic and body treatment services such as massage, facials, manicures and pedicures
  • Customized services for men including facial shaves
  • Private sun deck with drink service and a true urban sanctuary vibe on an upper floor with views of the cityscape and the Waldorf courtyard below
  • The spa books well in advance, plan to schedule at least two weeks prior to a desired service. My reservation was last minute, so unfortunately I was not able to experience a treatment first-hand, but the staff was gracious and gave me a tour.
  • Valet parking for hotel and spa guests is available for a fee or use the self-parking garage one block away

What’s Nearby

A lion statue greets visitors to The Art Institute of Chicago's front entrance.

Chicago’s Gold Coast neighborhood is considered one of the city’s most affluent communities. The main streets are safe and easily walkable. It’s fun to stroll by the couture fashion boutiques. The side streets are lined with multimillion-dollar single-family homes and deluxe residential high-rises. In addition to stunning vintage architecture, the neighborhood has an abundance of towering trees, green foliage and landscaped sidewalk planters.

  • Washington Square Park is one block from The Waldorf Chicago and is an entire block of green space with a towering fountain in the middle.
  • Oak Street Beach is two blocks east of the hotel, making the Lake Michigan lakefront easily accessible to Waldorf Astoria guests.
  • The Magnificent Mile and its many shops and attractions are a decent walk or an easy ride-share service away. The Willis Tower is one of the tallest buildings in the world and has the SkyDeck experience for a bird’s eye view of the city.
  • The world-renowned Art Institute of Chicago has many custom pieces and something for everyone. Stay an hour or an entire day. Directly across the street from the main Michigan Avenue entrance and its lion statues is the origin of Route 66, marked by large signage. The summer of 2026 marks the 200th anniversary for this iconic American vehicle route, making this a great photo opportunity.
  • Chicago tourist mainstays like Millennium Park and “ The Bean ” sculpture, Navy Pier, The Field Museum, Shedd Aquarium and the famed Chicago Riverwalk area are must-sees for first-time visitors to the city.

SheBuysTravel Tip: If you plan to visit at least three of the above attractions, consider purchasing a CityPass, with reduced admission prices and expedited entry to the SkyDeck at Willis Tower (a huge timesaver over waiting in line).

Getting There

There are two airports in the area, Chicago Midway and Chicago O’Hare International Airport. Midway is closer to downtown. A ride-share service will run around $50 before tip from O’Hare to The Waldorf Chicago.

For my first visit to Vancouver, I chose a unique place to stay in the heart of downtown. The historic EXchange Hotel Vancouver is a luxe reinvention of the city’s Old Stock Exchange. This breathtaking British Columbia base camp pairs classic architectural features from the ‘20s with modern amenities and premium perks.

This trip was hosted. All opinions expressed are entirely my own.

Pros:

  • Convenient location in the heart of downtown Vancouver near popular attractions
  • Beautiful, modern property with a rich history
  • Spacious rooms and ample amenities
  • Contactless mobile check-in is available when you download FLEXIPASS and enter your reservation information on the day of your visit

Cons:

  • No pool
  • Bathtubs only in select rooms
  • Environmentally friendly geothermal heat exchange system can be finicky

SheBuysTravelTip: If you’re a chocolate lover, there’s a Lindt store attached to the hotel so you can get a sweet treat for dessert at the end of the night.

Are you ready to explore off the beaten path? Let us inspire you!

Rooms at EXchange Hotel Vancouver

The hotel has several room types available including deluxe queen and deluxe king. I stayed on the Dividend floor (11th floor) and the room had one king bed and some more upscale amenities. including access to the lounge area which had light bites and wine.

Some of the in-room perks I had were:

  • Dyson Supersonic
  • A B&O Beoplay HX headphones
  • A Nespresso coffee machine
  • Pillow menu
  • Minifridge

The only downside was that the air conditioning shut off in the middle of the night which made it a little hot and stuffy.

The price points for the rooms at EXchange Hotel Vancouver vary based on room type and time of year with prices ranging from $269 to $589 CAD and a $100 security deposit. They offer packages though that include free breakfast and there are discounts available for AAA members and if you book two nights you can get the third free.

Amenities at EXchange Hotel Vancouver

three black stationary bikes and two treadmills in a room behind two flat screen televisions inside EXchange Hotel Vancouver.
Cardio equipment inside of the 24/7 fitness center inside EXchange Hotel Vancouver. Photo credit: Casey Clark

The property has numerous amenities for guests to enjoy during their stay, including

  • a 24/7 fitness center
  • business center
  • an on-site restaurant
  • concierge services
  • free wifi
  • valet parking ($61 CAD per day)

I didn’t have a chance to use the gym; however, it has a decent amount of cardio and weight machines to get a quick pump in.

As for the business center, it is on the smaller side and you need to get a key from the front desk to access it. That said, if you’re visiting on business or are a digital nomad, then it can be helpful to get some work done or print out a few documents.

Food at EXchange Hotel Vancouver

Crispy pita bread on a wooden board next to four bowls of dips and a bowl of vegetables at Hydra at EXchange Hotel Vancouver.
A spread platter from Hydra with hummus and four different dips with vegetables. Photo credit: Casey Clark

I was blown away by the food at Exchange Hotel Vancouver at the on-site restaurant Hydra. If you’re a fan of Mediterranean cuisine, then you’ll want to stop by Hydra during your stay. On the menu, you’ll find classic dishes like spanakopita, saganoki, roasted chicken, moussaka and souvlaki to name a few. I highly recommend getting a few dishes and sharing them with the rest of your party so you get to try a bit of everything — it’s all delicious.

If you have a sweet tooth, then you’ll want to try the baklava with pistachio ice cream. It’s truly one of the best desserts I’ve ever had in my life.

SheBuysTravel Tip: Hydra also offers breakfast if you’re looking for something to help get your day started. It’s very convenient if you’re staying at the hotel and don’t want to venture out to find a place in the downtown district.

Things to Do Near EXchange Hotel Vancouver

several skyscrapers from a birds eye view in downtown Vancouver near the Exchange Hotel
View from the top of the Vancouver Lookout in the downtown area. Photo credit: Casey Clark

The EXchange Hotel is in the heart of the downtown area which means there’s so much to do and see. For starters, you’ll want to head over to the Vancouver Lookout where you can go up to the observation deck where you’ll get 360-degree views of the city.

Afterwards, you’ll want to head to the Gastown steam clock to check it out in person. It does draw crowds since it’s one of the handful left in the world. If you’re more adventurous, then you could make a trip over to the Capilano Suspension Bridge, Granville Island or the Vancouver Aquarium to check out some aquatic life in the area.

Getting to EXchange Hotel Vancouver

If you’re flying into the Vancouver airport, the hotel is only a 30-minute drive making it super convenient and an easy drive. You can either get a rental car or utilize rideshare to get to the hotel from the airport if you don’t have a ride in Canada.

SheBuysTravel Tip : Keep in mind that if you’re flying in from the US or outside of Canada, you’ll go through customs which can take anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour, so you’ll want to plan that into your travel time.

It’s been a tough couple of months for me and my family as we navigate the roiling waters of a failing parent. And, like many women, I tend to take care of myself last. So a few days of self-care at the JW Marriott Parq Vancouver were just the respite I needed.

Here’s how to pamper yourself in style and restore balance to your body and mind.

Editor’s Note: The writer was hosted.

Step 1: Gather Your Girlfriends

4 women having lunch at The Sandbar restaurant on Granville Island, near Vancouver.
You could do this wellness journey solo, but it’s more fun to share it with friends. Photo credit: Cindy Richards

While this trip certainly can be done solo — Vancouver is a safe, clean, walkable city — the experience is that much sweeter when shared. There’s an extra level of joy when you can share a glass of wine and a great meal while catching up on how the kids are doing and comparing notes on which massage therapist did a better job of untangling the knots in your neck.

Let us inspire your travels! Sign up for our newsletter now.

Step 2: Check into the JW Marriott Parq Vancouver

King guest room at the JW Marriott Parq Vancouver
My guest room at the luxe JW Marriott Parq Vancouver overlooks False Creek. Photo credit: Cindy Richards

This luxury hotel overlooks False Creek, a hive of activity in the Yaletown neighborhood of Vancouver (easily reached via the fast, clean and efficient Canada Rail from the Vancouver Airport).

The hotel is the home of the Spa by JW Vancouver, the wellspring of wellness that sets the tone for my three days of pampering.

The JW Marriott Parq Vancouver exudes elegance with its muted colors, elevated service and luxury touches.

I started my wellness journey with a few minutes in my room watching the water taxis, rowers and personal boats criss-crossing False Creek, the body of water that links Vancouver to the charming Granville Island.

Step 3: Have an Intention

This is a surprisingly emotional experience. When I enter the spa, I am given a piece of rice paper and a felt-tip pen and asked to share my intention or say how I wanted to feel at the end of my treatment.

“Relaxed & rested,” I write.

The attendant then invites me to place the paper into a bowl of water that she stirs with a wooden spoon; I watch the paper disintegrate as she tells me the water will be used to water the JW Garden and “Mother Nature will take care of the rest.”

I nearly burst into tears.

Step 4: Sync Your Mind and Body

Woman laying under a weighted blanket during a Mind Sync treatment at the JW Spa at the JW Marriott Parq Vancouver
That’s me under a weighted blanket experiencing the Mind Sync treatment at the JW Spa. Photo courtesy of: Cindy Richards

This requires a visit to the Spa by JW Vancouver and its Mind Sync experience.

First, I sink into the oversized recliner. Then I choose my meditation experience; I opt for the 25-minute Stress Release session, which promises users can “Free yourself from tension through letting go.” It had me at ocean waves.

Next, the solicitous attendant covers me with a weighted blanket, being careful to tuck it in all around so I am encased in a comfy cocoon. Then she places the headphones over my ears, an eye shade over my eyes, adjusts the chair to zero gravity, turns on the program, steps out and closes the doors, leaving me alone to listen to the waves and music while the chair vibrates in time.

As a real Type A, I find it a challenge to calm my mind and stay in the moment. (Just ask my husband. He’ll tell you.)

This mind sync experience was no different. Every time my mind wandered — to the next deadline, to how I would write about this experience, to the meeting I had scheduled later that day — the gentle vibrations would pull me back.

The experience was developed to treat military veterans with PTSD. Since all of us seem to be suffering from some sort of PTSD these days, it’s been adapted to work for everyone. I found it a comforting antidote to my jet lag from crossing three time zones over a 5-hour flight.

Step 5: Nourish Your Body

The pork collar with craised celery and spotted shrimp cream, a highlight of the tasting menu at Burdock and Co., a woman-owned, Michelin-starred restaurant in Vancouver.

Vancouver is a mecca for foodies. Burdock and Co., a small woman-owned restaurant that earned its first Michelin star after just a year of operation, offers a tasting menu in which every dish and every bottle of wine has a back story that adds richness and wonder to the experience.

And every artfully-plated dish is just as beautiful as it is delicious – food for the soul as well as the belly.

SheBuysTravel Tip: You don’t need to leave the JW Marriott Parq Vancouver for great eats. I found equally delicious and beautiful offerings from the talented chefs who work at the resort.

Step 6: Embark on a Spiritual Journey

A woman standing on the beach in Vancouver
Ruby Banwait, our Talaysay Tour guide, regaled us with stories of the indigenous peoples of Vancouver and talked at length about our spiritual connection to the sea. Photo credit: Cindy Richards

For this step, I joined the Salish Sea & Me Tour from Talaysay Tours, another woman-owned business in Vancouver. This one focuses on exploring the lasting impact of indigenous peoples on the modern city.

Our guide, Ruby Banwait, is a marine biologist by training and her love of the sea is palpable. Like her, I find that water soothes my soul. Just seeing water or being near water makes my blood pressure fall and my breathing ease.

As we stroll along the beach, watching the Pacific Ocean waves gently lap the shoreline, she tells tales of the sea and the native Squamish people of Vancouver. Sadly, their story is no different from that of other native people who were treated horribly by white settlers.

It is hard to hear the stories of dislocation and deprivation. But it is the final story – the one in which the women of the tribe save the white settlers who banished them from their lands from certain death when Vancouver burned to the ground in 1886 – that brought tears to my eyes.

Step 7: Take Time to Detox

Massage therapist in a treatment room at the JW Spa in the JW Marriott Parq Vancouver
My skilled massage therapist, Natlie, explains the Organic Honey Detox treatment. Photo credit: Cindy Richards

For this, I head back to the Spa by JW for the 105-minute Organic Honey Detox Wellness Journey.

My massage therapist, Natlie, is compassionate, professional and nurturing. The bespoke treatment developed at the spa uses honey harvested from the onsite JW Garden (the garden that was watered with my daily intention) for a treatment that combines soothing massage with the honey detox – a process that can, at times, be quite painful.

She started with massage oils, then poured warm honey on my skin. As the honey cooled, it grew sticky and she kneaded my skin with her hands, pulling the honey and the toxins from my body. In the places where I most strongly hold my tension – for me, my back and shoulders – it felt like she was stripping wax from my skin over and over. On other parts of my body, it was much less intense.

The treatment finishes with a much-needed soothing massage.

Step 8: Take a Yoga Class

No wellness journey is complete without at least one yoga class. Here we are on a balcony at the JW Marriott Parq Vancouver. Photo credit: Cindy Richards

I’m a real yogi, so no wellness journey could ever be complete without at least one session of yoga.

This time, our teacher is Ethan from Jaybird Studios, a woman-owned yoga company with outlets across Canada.

Our class, outdoors on a sunny fall day in Vancouver, gave us the chance to gaze out at the city while holding a warrior pose.

Step 9: Bring the Wellness Full Circle

Attendant holds open the door to a wellness pod at Circle Wellness in Vancouver.
Welcome to your wellness pod! Photo credit: Cindy Richards

We did that at Circle Wellness, a unique experience only available in Vancouver.

From the outset, it is mysterious and intriguing. The building is non-descript from the outside, with a small plaque announcing the name and double doors next to a keypad. When it’s 10 minutes before your appointment time, your secret code (the last four digits of your phone number) can be punched into the keypad to unlock the doors.

Inside, I was greeted by an attendant who handed me headphones and asked me to watch a short video explaining the experience. I did, but still had no real understanding of what I was about to do.

Then, she walked me to my pod – which should win an award for “most creative adaptation of a metal shipping container.”

I stepped inside, locked the door and stripped for what would be a decidedly invigorating yet relaxing experience. By the time my 90 minutes were up, I was part limp noodle, part namaste, part in tune with my body and mind.

Inside the Circle Wellness pod — this section has a shower, cedar plank hot soaking tub and marble cold plunge pool. The ceiling is open to let in the fresh air. Photo credit: Cindy Richards

The 6-part experience asks participants to:

  • Take a shower
  • Soak in a very warm bath inside a large cedar soaking tub for 30 minutes.
  • Step into a sauna room that slowly grows so dark that you can’t see your hand in front of your face.
  • Dip into a very chilled cold plunge pool. (Confession: I only made it in up to my waist. I couldn’t bring myself to go deeper into that freezing water.)
  • Lay on hot stones for up to 15 minutes. (I was surprised by how comfortable the bumpy surface was and how much I loved looking up at the blue sky while I rested.)
  • Shower again, using an exfoliating cloth to slough off all of those dead skin cells.

Step 10: Relax, Massage, Repeat

Couples massage treatment room at the JW Spa at the JW Marriott Parq Vancouver

I headed back to the JW Marriott for one final pampering, a 50-minute relaxation massage. Generally, I find that a 50-minute massage is just long enough to get my clenched muscles to think about starting to maybe relax a little bit. But coming as it did after three days of self-care and that 90 minutes at Circle Wellness, my muscles and mind were so relaxed that this massage was one of the best I’ve ever had.

“Wow,” said my therapist, Stephanie, “you have made my job really easy.”

Optional Step 11: Massage by Machine

No, that’s not Freddie Krueger. It’s me, using the infrared mask at the JW Spa. The mask is supposed to boost collagen production. Photo credit: Cindy Richards

This step is optional because, while I didn’t mind it, it’s not as nurturing as the spa experiences with a personal touch. That’s because it involves some techy wellness:

  • Massaging boots that use air to gently squeeze and release your legs and feet. Imagine a large blood pressure cuff wrapped about your legs, ankles and feet. When the boots were at their tightest, they were a bit uncomfortable, much like the automated blood pressure cuffs. Just as I thought I couldn’t take any more, they would release and the blood would flow again.
  • A red light therapy mask that is supposed to increase collagen production. The mask covers your full face, which led one woman to stop before her 20 minutes were up because she was feeling claustrophobic.
  • A massaging eye mask that can be programmed to massage your temples and around your eyes. I found it comforting to have the mask massaging my sinuses, especially during fall allergy season. A fellow traveler who suffers from migraines liked the experience so much that she ordered a mask to use at home.

Western North Carolina calls to road trippers with winding mountain roads, stunning vistas and small-town charm. I’ve explored this region on three unforgettable trips, from the Blue Ridge Parkway’s iconic overlooks to rare finds only locals know. Along the way, I’ve uncovered family-friendly stops, foodie hot spots and adventures for every traveler. Whether you’re chasing fall colors, planning a romantic escape, or seeking outdoor thrills, here are the places I think you’ll love the most.

Meadowbrook Inn and Historic Tapoco Lodge hosted me. All opinions expressed are entirely my own.

The Blue Ridge Parkway stretches 469 miles from Great Smoky Mountains National Park near Cherokee, North Carolina, northeast through the Blue Ridge Mountains into Virginia, where it links with Shenandoah National Park and becomes Skyline Drive.

Highlights Along the Drive

  • Asheville: The largest city in Western North Carolina; nestled between the Blue Ridge and Smoky Mountains. The city boasts a lively arts scene, historic architecture, a bustling downtown, highly rated restaurants and local breweries, all set against mountain views and anchored by the Biltmore Estate.
  • Hendersonville: A quaint mountain town just 15 miles off the Blue Ridge Parkway, with historic streets and shopping, the Dupont State Forest, and views from Jump Off Rock!
  • The North Carolina Arboretum: Spans 434 acres in the Southern Appalachian Mountains south of Asheville. Visitors find 65 acres of cultivated gardens, a Bonsai Exhibition Garden, miles of trails, rotating exhibits, a bistro and a gift shop, all surrounded by Pisgah National Forest.
  • Grandfather Mountain: Delivers breathtaking views and rugged terrain for hikers and explorers. The famous Mile-High Swinging Bridge thrills visitors above a deep gorge, while rare wildlife and dramatic rock formations await on its trails.
  • Blowing Rock: Offers sweeping Blue Ridge views and a lively local art scene. Galleries, shops and festivals line downtown, and the town’s namesake landmark juts dramatically from a cliff with legendary scenery.
  • Moses H. Cone Memorial Park: Flat Top Manor, the 23-room estate built by Moses Cone in the early 1900s, crowns 3,500 acres along the Parkway. Carriage trails, lakes and landscaped grounds invite hiking, horseback riding and craft shopping at the Parkway Craft Center.
  • Blowing Rock Art & History Museum (BRAHM): Showcases the art, culture and history of the Southern Appalachians. Exhibits highlight local artists, traditional crafts and regional heritage through permanent collections and rotating shows.

Where to Stay: Meadowbrook Inn – Blowing Rock

A cozy boutique hotel in downtown Blowing Rock, Meadowbrook Inn treats guests with a regional breakfast menu in the morning and a duck pond with free food for the resident ducks. This mountain retreat, situated near shops, galleries and restaurants, serves as an ideal starting point for exploring the scenic Blue Ridge Mountains and driving along the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Where to Eat

The Speckled Trout Restaurant & Bottle Shop – Blowing Rock

In the heart of downtown Blowing Rock, The Speckled Trout blends High Country cuisine with a cozy mountain setting. Carolina Mountain Trout anchors the menu, served six ways with gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan sides—I chose the almond & cornmeal-crusted trout with Hoppin’ John and collard greens.

Six Pence Pub – Blowing Rock

Six Pence Pub brings a classic British pub experience to downtown Blowing Rock. With traditional fare like Shepherd’s Pie, Fish and Chips and Pot Roast, it ties Old World flavors to North Carolina’s colonial heritage—I ordered the delicious Shepherd’s Pie.

Tail of the Dragon and Cherohala Skyway: Twists and Turns for Daring Drivers

The Tail of the Dragon starting point in Deals Gap, North Carolina, marks the gateway to 318 curves in 11 miles—one of America’s most thrilling scenic drives. Photo credit: Julie Diebolt Price

These drives are beautiful but not for the feint of heart!

  • Promoted since the 1990s as a motorcycle and driving destination, Tail of the Dragon twists through 318 curves in 11 miles and traces its roots to a trail once used by Cherokee Native Americans and buffalo herds.
  • The Cherohala Skyway, a 43-mile National Scenic Byway, connects Tellico Plains, Tennessee, to Robbinsville, North Carolina. It passes through the Cherokee and Nantahala National Forests and takes its name from the combination.

After my battle driving the Dragon, I connected to the Cherohala Skyway along the Tennessee border. Unfortunately, the rain and fog made it an arduous journey. Fog thickened so much in several places that I couldn’t see the pavement in front of me.

She Buys Travel Tip: While I took it easy on the winding curves of the Tail of the Dragon in the rain, the dense clouds on the Cherohala Skyway made it hard to see the road. Wait for a sunny day to see the stunning landscape.

Highlights Along the Drive

  • Fontana Dam: The tallest dam in the eastern U.S., with impressive scale drawing history buffs and photographers.
  • Great Smoky Mountains National Park: This national park protects one of America’s richest natural habitats. Trails, waterfalls and wildlife encounters make it a must for outdoor lovers.
  • Nantahala National Forest: This rugged landscape offers hiking, fishing and whitewater rafting adventures. Towering trees and mountain streams create an unforgettable backdrop.
  • Cheoah Dam: The dam played a starring role in The Fugitive, when Harrison Ford’s character jumped from the structure. Cheoah Dam remains a dramatic stop along the route. Stay at the Tapoco Lodge to see the dam and it’s dramatic falls on Release Dates.

Where to Stay: Historic Tapoco Lodge – Robbinsville

The Historic Tapoco Lodge Resort, designated a National Historic site and a popular local destination built in the 1930s by ALCOA for dam workers, now blends rustic charm with modern comfort. Sitting on the Cheoah River in the Nantahala National Forest, this modern hotel, built with local materials like river rock, chestnut wood and handmade bricks, is a viewing site for Release date events (releasing the water from the dam).

Where to Eat

Tapoco Tavern – Robbinsville

Tapoco Tavern offers pub fare and craft beer in a casual, family-friendly setting at Historic Tapoco Lodge. My Campfire Carolina Mountain Trout arrived on caramelized onions, smoky bacon and glazed pecans, with indulgent sides of baked mac and cheese and super slaw.

Cheoah Dining Room – Robbinsville

The Cheoah Dining Room at Tapoco Lodge delivers a refined dining experience with locally sourced ingredients and wine pairings. Daily breakfast and evening meals showcase upscale Appalachian-inspired cuisine in a formal riverside setting.

Flying In

Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT), the largest commercial airport in North Carolina, serves as a central hub with 186 nonstop destinations. Its single-terminal layout makes it easy to navigate and ideal for both domestic and international flights.

SheBuysTravel Tip: The Hampton Inn & Suites at Charlotte Airport offers comfortable accommodations that prioritize convenience, amenities and accessibility for both business and leisure travelers. With free breakfast, It’s the perfect hotel for your start and end of a Western North Carolina road trip. And bonus: you’re nearby the rental car centers where you can pick up and drop off your ride.

In Upstate New York, the scenic village of Cooperstown is famous for its National Baseball Hall of Fame and historic Doubleday Field — and it’s also home to a legendary historic lakefront resort.

Nestled between the Adirondack and Catskill Mountains, The Otesaga Resort Hotel has welcomed families since 1909 and offers a spa, championship golf course, world-class dining and endless seasonal outdoor activities.

Each autumn, Cooperstown comes alive with vibrant fall foliage, marking the perfect season to experience The Otesaga’s splendor. Here’s why this luxury resort should be first on your list for an unforgettable family fall getaway.

Scenic Lakefront Setting Perfect for Fall Family Fun

The resort’s design showcases its stunning views — and in fall, its expansive open-air veranda provides the perfect spot for leaf-peeping, with fiery shades of red, orange and yellow as far as the eye can see.

Families will find no shortage of lakefront family fun in early autumn, with seasonal recreation options that include tennis, pickleball, boating, fishing, bicycle rentals and an award-winning golf course. In winter, guests can try snowshoeing.

SheBuysTravel Tip: With the weather crisp and cool, plan to take a scenic lakeside stroll by the resort’s docks, followed by tapas at dusk at the Fire Bar, a circular fire pit perfect for warming up around the fire.

The property features 132 unique guestrooms and suites for every family size and budget, ranging from traditional guestrooms to luxurious lakeside suites. On our recent visit, our family of five (with three children, ages 5, 5 and 8) stayed in a spectacularly spacious suite, featuring large windows with magnificent views of the lake, two queen beds, a sofa bed, an ample bathroom, deluxe furnishings and a generous living area with plenty of space for the kids to play.

SheBuysTravel Tip: The luxury service at The Otesaga is unmatched; expect turndown service in the evening with chocolate treats on pillows, plush bathrobes and Egyptian cotton towels. While pets aren’t permitted (service animals only), the warm hospitality ensures every detail feels thoughtful.

Resort Dining Options for All Ages

First, our favorite: daily breakfast at Glimmerglass is a must. With gorgeous views of the lake (either inside the elegant dining room or on the veranda), each morning brings a bountiful buffet filled with Otesaga specialties such as made-to-order omelets, fluffy waffles, freshly whipped cream and house-made granola.

We also loved dining on the patio of Hawkeye Bar & Grill, which offers seasonal menu items (including tasty burgers and stone-fired pizza), kid-friendly options and remarkable views of the region’s colorful foliage.

SheBuysTravel Tip: For a midday pick-me-up, grab fresh-brewed gourmet coffee and house-made granola bars at The Otesaga’s Mohican Market, located just inside the resort’s lobby. Also, keep the dress code in mind for the resort’s restaurants; dress is resort-style casual, so pack a few polished layers for evening meals (and prepare to dress up a little more for the resort’s signature restaurant: the upscale steakhouse 1909).

Fall Experiences Families Will Remember

The Otesaga Resort Hotel has exceptional offerings this fall, all of which invite families to unwind, connect with nature and indulge in harvest flavors.

During the resort’s monthly Full Moon Hike & Dinner (September through December), guests can join a 30 to 45-minute guided evening hike along Cooperstown trails, followed by a buffet-style dinner at the resort (including wine and beer) and an evening around the resort’s cozy Fire Bar.

For an off-property activity, Rail Explorers in nearby Milford offers electric-assist recumbent bike tours on railroad tracks — a perfect way for families to enjoy the autumn air and scenery.

SheBuysTravel Tip: For bookings through October 31, families can book the Fall Harvest Special package, which includes 25 percent off midweek stays and a complimentary fall latte at Mohican Market.

A Walkable Location Steps from Cooperstown’s Top Attractions

The Otesaga Resort Hotel is a five-minute walk from the center of Cooperstown, a picturesque small village that’s less than four hours by car from New York City or Boston.

From The Otesaga, families can walk to plenty of attractions on or near Main Street, including the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum and charming restaurants like the Cooperstown Diner, Doubleday Café and Toscana Cucina Italiana. While some businesses close for the season starting in mid-October, the outstanding Fenimore Art Museum is open through December 31 and is walkable from the resort.

SheBuysTravel Tip: If you’re looking for artisanal treats, the year-round Cooperstown Farmers’ Market is a hidden gem. Open on Saturdays, it’s the perfect spot to shop for fresh goods you won’t find anywhere else. We walked back to The Otesaga bearing bags of maple candy, fresh cheeses and small-batch jams to enjoy at the resort.

Cozy Seasonal Touches That Make Autumn Unforgettable

While the resort’s scenic Leatherstocking Golf Course closes annually during the colder winter months, tee times are still available during the fall, making it the perfect season to enjoy panoramic views of the colors of autumn.

Fall festivals abound, too, including popular events in the village and at the Fenimore Farm & Country Village (prior to closing for the season in November). Just minutes from Cooperstown at nearby Fly Creek Cider Mill & Orchard, families can join in an autumn tradition for over 168 years and watch as the mill’s Boomer and Boschert press is used to make cider.

SheBuysTravel Tip: The Otesaga Resort Hotel is especially cozy indoors during the fall and winter, with crackling fireplaces, festive décor and indoor activities like complimentary local beer tastings and art tours.

Why Families Return to This Historic Hotel Year After Year

A family-owned resort that is still owned and operated by the same family who built it in 1909, The Otesaga Resort Hotel has an incredible history.

The Clark family (who also founded other prominent Cooperstown institutions, including the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, the Fenimore Art Museum and Fenimore Farm and Country Village) commissioned famed architect Percy Griffin to design the resort. Originally built as a luxury summer retreat for wealthy families from New York City, the resort has drawn generations of families for more than 100 years.

SheBuysTravel Tip: During Hall of Fame induction weekend each July, the resort closes to the public and hosts some of the world’s most famous baseball players. For a peek into this exclusive world, join a free historic walking tour of the resort and look for a special display of players’ personalized wine glasses.
