My first trip to Mobile, Alabama, included a special stay at the very first Hyatt Studios in the country. I’ve stayed at plenty of Hyatt hotels in the past, but this is Hyatt’s first upper midscale extended stay brand, in addition to brands such as Hyatt Place and Hyatt House.. It’s great for remote workers who are always on the go or individuals on a road trip who want to take a long pit stop. If you’re on the hunt for a place to stay close to Mobile that’s clean and affordable, then Hyatt Studios Mobile may be your new favorite hotel.

The rooms are all suite style with the option to have one king or two queen beds. The rooms are clean, modern, well-lit and spacious, perfect for those extended stays and large travel parties.

In the room, you’ll also find the following amenities:

My favorite part of the room was the couch next to the bed and the 55-inch HDTV. My only real qualm was with the air conditioner. It shut off a few times during the night and I had to finagle it to get it to stay cool at points.

SheBuysTravel Tip: As someone who packs pretty lightly, having a quality hairdryer was a bonus as I didn’t need to bring my own.

Amenities at Hyatt Studios Mobile / Tillmans Corner

Aside from the in-room amenities at Hyatt Studios Mobile, there were several property amenities for guests to take advantage of during their stay. For starters, the 24/7 fitness center and laundry room were amazing. It’s super convenient having a place on-site to work out and get chores done, especially if you’re staying for several nights.

There’s no pool, however, there is a nice outdoor patio area with seating and grills. If you wanted to make burgers or put on a steak, then there’s the ability to do that on-site. For added convenience, there’s a 24/7 mart in the lobby with beverages, snacks, medications and toiletries.

Food at Hyatt Studios Mobile / Tillmans Corner

There are no restaurants on-site; however, they do offer complimentary breakfast between 4:30 am and 10 am. The selection consists of chocolate and banana nut muffins, fruit and granola bars. There are breakfast items such as sandwiches and yogurt available for purchase too inside the refrigerator section.

If you’re looking to grab a meal nearby, you won’t find many sit-down restaurants; however, there are fast food options in close proximity.

Things to Do Near Hyatt Studios Mobile / Tillmans Corner

I spent the majority of my time at the History Museum of Mobile which had several interesting exhibits on the history of Mardi Gras and a limited-edition puppetry exhibition.

Additionally, I ended my visit at the USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park where I explored the battleship alongside the fighter planes they had inside.

Other popular attractions in Mobile include:

Getting to Hyatt Studios Mobile / Tillmans Corner

Hyatt Studios Mobile is a 20-minute car ride from the airport and it’s pretty easy to get to with rideshare or a rental car. Although Mobile is a pretty bustling area, you might find it difficult to get a car after 9 pm or even early in the morning if you need to catch a flight.

SheBuysTravel Tip: I highly recommend scheduling a rideshare in advance if you don’t have a rental car to ensure you make your flight on time.

I’ve seen countless ads for Sandals vacations – the images of happy, beautiful couples clasping hands, clinking glasses, and barefoot toes in snow-white sand – and I would always say to myself, “Someday, we’re going to do that.” In this case, my travel dreams turned into a reality and I had the opportunity to visit Sandals Royal Curaçao with my husband.

Was it everything the advertisements made it out to be?

Getting to Sandals Royal Curaçao

• The Curaçao International Airport (CUR) has flights to and from North and South America, Europe and other Caribbean islands.
• We flew on Delta with a stopover in Atlanta. Our flight from Atlanta took about four hours.
• Complimentary airport transfers included; there’s an easy-to-find Sandals desk in the airport. Just check in there and you’ll be directed to your bus.
• The return trip is equally straightforward, although with a more sad trombone feeling.

Where is Curaçao Anyway?

• Located 40 miles off Venezuela’s North coast, Curaçao is part of what’s known as the “ABC Islands:” Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao.

• All three ABC islands are constituent countries of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, so if you speak Dutch, here’s your chance to practice it.

Accommodations

• We stayed in a spacious club-level ocean-view room with a balcony.
• The club-level amenities included a mini bar, room service and a dedicated lounge with access to special concierge services for making dining and spa reservations.
• The big perk of club-level was having an expedited check-in and check-out. We did not take advantage of any of the other services but we enjoyed the room, which was spacious with light and airy tropical-themed decor.
• Wanna splurge? There are swankier, more spacious and more secluded rooms on the property, many with swim-up pool patios or private pools.

SheBuysTravel Tip: If you’re looking for seclusion and some extra sizzle, consider upgrading to one of the butler suites. You’ll enjoy enhanced service and your own pool area.

Dining

• Sandals Royal Curaçao is an all-inclusive resort and yes, all-inclusive really does mean all-inclusive when it comes to dining.
• There are eight restaurants, numerous bars – we never had to look far to find a drink – and a food truck park. We did our best to sample everything in a five-day stay but didn’t quite hit all the eateries.
• I cannot recommend the food truck park enough and I’d happily eat the shrimp tempura bao buns every day if I could.
• No reservations needed, except for Butch’s, the resort’s chop house, and Vincent, named for Vincent Van Gogh.

Favorites

I didn’t have a bad meal during my stay but aside from the shrimp bao buns at food truck Toteki, I had a couple of other favorites:

• The pizza at Pietra Italian was delicious. It’s only available during certain hours and yes, it is worth scheduling your day around.
• Kanaal wine bar/cafe serves Starbucks-style coffee, gelato and pastries but what I loved best was the cheese case. They had a stellar selection of Dutch cheeses, some I’d enjoyed before and some fun new-to-me cheeses.

Eating Downtown

• Sandals Royal Curaçao has a partnership with a handful of restaurants in Willemstad that allows resort guests to experience the culinary talents of local chefs – it’s a fantastic way to get a sense of place.
• A dining credit plus transfers come with certain room categories, so check when you reserve to see if you qualify for this perk. Sandals staff can also make recommendations on what to try off the resort.
• The resort food was excellent but I recommend making some time to leave the bubble and sample some local flavor.

Amenities (AKA What’s Really Included)

• Aside from the food, pretty much everything is included at a Sandals Resort! I’m always sort of suspicious of all-inclusive packages because I’m waiting for a bill at the end for stuff I thought was free but there was no catch here.
• All alcohol – yes, really.
• Activities, like lawn games, pool games and pickleball.
• Snorkeling and equipment.
• Scuba for certified divers – more on that in a minute.
• Bikes to explore the resort.
• Fitness center.
• Nightly entertainment, such as music and dance parties.
• Airport transfers.
• Taxes and gratuities.
• Wi-Fi – the resort WiFi was very fast and reliable.

Not included:

• Spa treatments
• Boutique/gift shop
• Photos
• Excursions/tours

Scuba diving at Sandals Royal Curaçao

• Diving (+ all equipment) is included at all Sandals resorts for PADI-certified divers.
• Certification and additional dives available for an additional fee.
• They also offer SNUBA – sort of a cross between snorkeling and scuba – for a fee. We didn’t try it but I’m kind of curious about it now.

Diving Instruction at Sandals Royal Curaçao

• My husband and I got our scuba certification while staying at the resort.
• There’s an online component that must be done at home before the in-water training can happen at the resort.
• It’s doable to get certified during a resort stay if you’re prepared to make diving instruction the focus of your trip – some adjustment of departure times might be needed since there are restrictions on flying after a dive, which you’ll learn in training!

Overall Impressions and Would I Go Back?

• A pretty easy tropical couple’s getaway that met or exceeded expectations.
• Zero hidden charges.
• The food and accommodations were A+ and the resort had a quiet, relaxed energy that I found restful and dare I say – romantic?
• I would stay at a Sandals resort again and I’d stay at this resort again. Warm weather and relaxed energy where I don’t have to make too many decisions is my jam.

Potential Negatives

• I found the nightlife vibe of the resort very chill. I loved that for me but those who crave major party energy may find Sandals Royal Curaçao sleepy. I saw mostly couples who kept to themselves and things got quiet after 9:00 pm. but all it would have taken was one super partylicious group to fire things up.
• The beach isn’t super beachy. There’s a scenic area for photo opps – small but pretty to look at. The swimmable beach is more inlet with a protected dock than a wide open beach. For us, it got the job done.

SheBuysTravel Tip: If you consider yourself a foodie, stay at least four nights to give yourself a chance to do some serious sampling and if you want to eat at Butch’s or Vincent, ask about reservations early on in your stay.

New York’s 11 Finger Lakes dangle like bracelet charms from the state’s outstretched arm. I recommend visiting the region for its epic gorge hiking, extremely drinkable dry Rieslings and historic associations with women’s suffrage and the Underground Railroad. But it’s also a relaxing destination to kick back for an autumn “me-moon” — my annual fall tradition — at the Lake House on Canandaigua.

First Impressions of The Lake House on Canandaigua

I try to schedule a getaway in the fall. It’s a seasonal reset I need to transition from summer to the hectic holidays. For my annual “me-moon,” I seek out boutique spa resorts with a casual, luxurious atmosphere where I’ll feel comfortable as a solo guest. 

Approaching the complimentary valet, I was getting all the Joanna Gaines’ Magnolia feels. The privately owned Lake House on Canandaigua features 124 rooms and suites located in the main house and two “cottages.”

There’s even a picture-perfect greenhouse set in a kitchen garden near the lobby doors. I’ll be sending a wish list picture to Santa.

The Lake House sits on a former Sheraton Motor Lodge site, purchased in 1994 by the Sands family, founders of the Constellation Brands beverage empire. The new resort debuted in 2020 and honors the legacy of the past by featuring 1970 — the year the original hotel was constructed — in its logo. 

What I loved:

• Friendly, attentive staff create a “welcome home” atmosphere
• Reasonable resort fee includes an assortment of luxury perks
• Heated lakefront pool is a decadent year-round treat

What I’d change:

• Add some cozy touches to the guest room decor
• Offer complimentary lobby coffee service

Rooms at the Lake House

A spacious Cottage King suite was a heavenly haven for my solo stay. It’s hard to resist stretching out on the deep couch in the suite’s parlor for a nap. It doubles as a twin sleeper for families. The outside deck with Adirondack chairs, tables and canal view was my go-to sunrise spot.

Hand-crafted furniture is from The Brooklyn Home Company, a contemporary design, decor and art studio owned by younger members of the Sands family. Every element looked beautiful and felt wonderful to the touch. 

I longed for a pop of color in a pillow or throw to cozy the space. However, my daughter strongly disagreed when she saw my pictures. She loved the warm white Scandinavian-crisp aesthetic.

Then she asked when we were returning for a mother-daughter getaway.

A large built-in wardrobe occupies the suite’s foyer and houses room amenities, including: 

• Coffee station
• Drawers and closet
• Safe
• Ironing board
• Full-length mirror
• Plush robes

SheBuysTravel Tip: I’m not a fan of in-room Nespresso machines. They’re loud and I’ve yet to find a pod that delivers the taste/caffeine combo I need in the morning. Fellow addicts should head to The Library in the main building to purchase a true cup o’ joe; they start serving at 7.

Dining at the Lake House

The Lake House has the following dining options on-property:

• Sand Bar – casual lunch, dinner; indoor/outdoor seating
• The Library – intimate Main Building bar/lounge, light breakfast and snacks available
• Rose Tavern – chef-driven year-round destination dining
• Pool Grill – seasonal lunch and snacks
• In-room dining

The Sand Bar

“Is the coleslaw homemade?” My family groans when I ask. Since I was traveling solo, I questioned my server a little louder than usual and was delighted to learn it was. The Sand Bar was bumping on an October Sunday evening with temperatures in the high 70s, a wonderful treat for upstate NY. 

The casual dining menu features salads, handhelds and several mains that crossover from the more formal Rose Tavern. Expect tropical touches from Executive Chef Garrette Gray, who comes to the Lake House from Florida. The ideal complement to my mahi mahi tacos was a lavender coconut mocktail.

Rose Tavern

Rose Tavern is the year-round breakfast, lunch and dinner restaurant at the Lake House. The indoor dining room is flanked on opposite sides by a wall-length bar and open kitchen. Additional seating options include a glassed-in terrace and outdoor patio.

The dinner menu rotates seasonally and features local products, including produce plucked from the Lake House kitchen garden. Homegrown tomatoes, for example, are used to create the red sauce featured with appetizer meatballs and entree rigatoni. FYI, don’t skip the pillowy Parker House dinner rolls. They’re worth the carb splurge.

SheBuysTravel Tip: If you love gardening, take a minute to chat with John Faerber. Director of Horticulture, Landscape and Floral He conducts seasonal garden tours, but he’ll happily share tips and plant picks if you catch him by the greenhouse or around the grounds.

The Library

I found my cozy at the Lake House in the Library Bar, the resort’s Main Building lounge. Continental breakfast options, snacks and coffee are available for purchase, in addition to a full-service bar. 

Canandaigua is Buffalo Bills country. It was fun to cheer, then groan, with a crowd of “Bills Mafia” fans as they watched their football team lose its first game of the season.

Things to Do at the Lake House

I stayed on-property for most of my time at The Lake House and happily filled my two days with a variety of activities, some included and some add-ons.

Book a Treatment at the Willowbrook Spa

Light pours into the resort’s Willowbrook Spa lounge. Don’t short your pre- and post-treatment time here. Open to resort and day guests, the spa has a complete menu of massages, body treatments, facials and salon services. 

The spa has two outdoor barrel saunas available to book. They’re positioned for maximum lake views with showers to alternate heat and cold hydro experiences.

Swim… Even When it’s Snowing!

The resort’s lakefront pool is heated year-round so you can dip and dive whatever the weather. I blissfully bounced between the hot tub and pool, knowing that I was soaking up October’s final golden sun rays.

Greet the Day with a Stretch

Ease into your days at the Lake House in the Yoga Studio, located on the third floor of the North Cottage. Instructor Suzanne Frazer leads a series of classes— yoga, meditation and stretching — accompanied by soothing chimes and crystal singing bowls.

Don’t expect a vigorous flow series. Suzanne is adept at reading the room and delivering an experience that works for a wide range of guests. For me, her thoughtful explanations about ways to improve joint health were lasting takeaways.

Channel Your Inner Artist

Suzanne also conducts 2-hour craft workshops at the resort. One popular option safely combines a brown liquor tasting with woodburning. You can also paint your own version of Canandaigua’s historic boathouses. It’s not a paint-by-numbers experience. Suzanne provides a light outline but guests are encouraged to bring their own flair to the scene.

Take a Canandaigua Cruise

The Lake House offers seasonal cruises aboard its luxury pontoon boat. The relaxing 1.5-hour sail circles Canandaigua, the 4th largest of the 11 Finger Lakes, providing peeks at grand estates, swimming coves and distant hills. 

Things to Do Near the Lake House

The Lake House is a destination resort. So don’t feel like you need to plan a bunch of activities off-property. But, if you do want to explore, here are a few things to do nearby.

Tour the Sonnenberg Gardens

Open from May 1 through October 31, the Sonnenberg Gardens and Mansion State Historic Park is a must-see for history buffs and flora fans. The 50-acre estate, constructed as a summer residence, includes a Queen-Anne style mansion, nine formal gardens, cafe and gift shop.

Taste the Finger Lakes at New York Kitchen

New York Kitchen is a not-for-profit organization promoting the bounty of the Empire State. It’s a 5-minute walk from the Lake House and one of its corporate partners. I popped in on a Sunday at 6 pm. Drag bingo had just started in the educational theater, a sold-out curry-making class was scheduled for later in the test kitchen and the tasting room was full of guests sampling flights of New York whites, rosés and reds. 

Shop Main Street

Canandaigua’s Downtown Shopping District is located along its historic Main Street. There’s a browsable mix of home decor, gift and clothing boutiques plus a variety of restaurants. I also suggest you head off Main Street to explore the local Wegman’s, The grocery chain, founded in 1916 in Rochester, NY, routinely ranks as one of the best in the country.

Walk the Kershaw Park Trail

The 1-mile-long trail hugs the Canandaigua shoreline and is ideal for an early morning or late evening walk. There’s a large children’s playground and the swimming beach is open from Memorial Day through late August.

Getting There

New York’s Finger Lakes occupy the triangle between Rochester, Syracuse and Binghamton. You can fly into a number of regional airports; however, it’s a popular drive destination region.

Though the double marble staircases, cascading light feature and alligator sculpture in the lobby might be intimidatingly chic, the staff are personable, approachable and happy to share their expertise. As much as we enjoyed every detail about our stay, it was the people who gave it its home-away-from-home feeling, reflecting its name.

Deciding on what to eat from the maze of counters and restaurants can be daunting, but there are no wrong choices.

• If you’re looking for more traditional German fare, consider Augustiner am Gendarmenmarkt ($60) for plate-size schnitzel, pork knuckle and steins of Bavarian lager. For a meal or drinks with a view, head to Baret ($50), the rooftop restaurant on top of the Humboldt Forum (an arts and cultural museum). High above the city, you can enjoy a cocktail and bites with a bird’s eye view of the Prussian grand institutions on Museum Island.
• Other stellar choices include: Ristorante Cumberland ($60), upscale Italian fare in a grand setting; Brasserie November ($55), refined French-inspired dining; Berta ($45), Israeli-German fusion with bold flavors; Schnitzelei Wedding ($40), elevated German comfort food and excellent beers.

Cheap Tasty Eats

• Don’t leave Berlin without trying currywurst, Berlin’s quintessential street food. Declared a national dish, it consists of sliced Bratwurst sausage smothered in curry-flavored tomato sauce. Served at street stands throughout the city, each has its own variation and spice recipe. CurryWolf ($8) has one of the most typical and tastiest versions. We enjoyed every bite with a German lager while people watching at their Ku’damm location, the city’s lively shopping and entertainment district.
• The unofficial national dish is the doner kebab. Berlin has the biggest Turkish community outside of Turkey and their influence can be tasted at places like Mustafa’s Gemüse Kebap ($8.50), which has as a cult-like following (and usually a long queue) and Imrel Grill ($8), located in the multi-cultural Neukölln  neighborhood.

Play: Things to Do on Your Berlin Vacation

“Whatever you come for, you can find in Berlin,” a local told me when I asked her for recommendations on what to do. Not exactly useful, but she was right. Germany’s capital has a vibrant cultural scene (both traditional and contemporary), distinct personality-driven neighborhoods, a compelling and thought-provoking history and enough activities to keep you busy for a year. Here are some suggestions to get you started:

Activities Worth Splashing Out On

• An indulgent Day at Vabali Spa: In the center of the city lies a five-acre sanctuary that features ten saunas, three steam baths, four pools, massage/treatment rooms and a lovely Asian-inspired restaurant. Special sessions include sound-bathing and guided meditation ($125). For a true splurge, add on one of their massages or body treatments.
• Berlin by Trabant Stretch-limo: This private tour not only gives you a chance to see the highlights of Berlin with your own knowledgeable personal guide, but also do it in a cult classic vehicle. The Trabant series of automobiles were manufactured in East Germany from 1957 to 1991 and became symbolic of life in the GDR (former East Germany). Cost is approximately $300 per group of up to five people.

SheBuysTravel Tip: Like most of the country’s spas, Vabali is ‘textile-free,’ meaning no bathing suits allowed. Robes are worn for moving between areas but removed before entering the pools, steam rooms and saunas. Guests sit on towels that are placed so no part of the body (including the feet) touches the surface directly. Though it challenged our North American sensibilities somewhat, the casual nudity in a spa setting is very much the cultural norm here and overall it was a relaxing way to experience a slice of life in Germany (though we opted not to go in pools).

Free and Inexpensive Fun

As one of the most affordable cities in Western Europe, Berlin is a frugal traveler’s wonderland with a slew of low cost and free activities to choose from.

• Pedal through History: Join a guided bike tour with Berlin on Bike that takes you to the city’s best attractions or one that focuses on the Cold War history. We chose the latter and felt goosebumps at moments as we followed parts of the Wall Trail and learned about the wall that encircled the city and divided the world. The tour company also does walking tours ($40).

• Exploring Museumsinsel (Museum Island): Bordered by the Spree River and the Kupfergraben Canal, this UNESCO World Heritage site is a literal island. Five world-class museums make the island their home: Altes Museum (Old Museum), Neues Museum (New Museum), Alte Nationalgalerie (Old National Gallery), Bode Museum and Pergamon Museum.
• Not only are they each worth checking out on their own merit, but the Museum Island’s grounds are a pleasure to stroll around in. Surrounded by these grand institutions, groups of friends and family lounge on the grass around the fountain, buskers perform and tourists snap selfies. We took a few photos, too (OK -maybe a few dozen).

Note: the pass doesn’t cover private museums like the DDR Museum (though it’s worth the $15 price tag if you’re interested in the social history of former East Germany).

• Admire the Art of the East Side Gallery:  This longest stretch of the remaining Berlin Wall is now an outdoor exhibition with murals and messages. Some are whimsical while others are thought-provoking. The most famous — the kiss between Brezhnev and Honecker — still stops visitors in their tracks. After strolling along the wall and admiring the works, we wandered down to the river, where young Berliners and international students lounged in floating hostels and riverside watering holes.

• Relax in Berlin’s Leafy Oases:  Germany’s capital is one of the greenest in Europe, with green spaces making up roughly a third of its total area. Tiergarten is the emerald crown jewel of Berlin’s extensive park system with 210 hectares of parkland right in the middle of the city. Once the former hunting grounds of Prussian kings, it’s now enjoyed by locals and visitors alike who come to walk its treelined trails, watch graceful swans swim in its ponds or cycle on its paths, which was exactly what we spent a morning doing.

Other parks to enjoy include: Monbijou Park, an urban beach on the bank of the Spree River; Volkspark Friedrichshain, a city favorite, offering wooded hills and fountains; the  Treptower Park, home to a huge Soviet war memorial; the Körnerpark, a manicured Baroque parkland hidden within Neukölln’s lively streets; and Viktoria Park, famous for its  waterfall.

Delve Deeper into History at these Free Attractions:

• Palace of Tears (Tränenpalast) was named for the tearful farewells that took place at the former border crossing at Friedrichstraße railway station. The museum focuses on the personal — stories of separations, contents of suitcases and small acts of defiance.
• Walk through the Brandenburg Gate, where the Berlin Wall first fell in November 1989.
• Scarred by fire, war and the Berlin Wall, the Reichstag is once again the striking home of the German parliament. Norman Foster’s glass dome offers 360° views of the city and its transparency represents openness and accountability of the government. Be sure to pick up a free auto-activated audio guide to learn about the building’s architecture, landmarks and the workings of parliament. Note: Entry is free but should be booked online well in advance and bring ID.

• The Berlin Wall Memorial is the most comprehensive site dedicated to this period of history with several outdoor exhibits, including the Window of Remembrance, which is dedicated to the people who died at the wall.
• Opened in 2005, Berlin’s Holocaust Memorial spreads across a five-acre field strewn with 2,711 concrete slabs, forming an eerie, disorienting maze. Cut off from the noise of the city, visitors navigate themselves among the sombre blocks for their own personal journey of remembrance.
• Checkpoint Charlie, once the main crossing between East and West Berlin for diplomats and foreigners, is now filled with tourists posing for selfies. It’s still worth a visit and the open-air exhibition offers more information on the city’s Cold War history.

Enjoy Musical Experiences Gratis:

• The Classic Open Air at the Gendarmenmarkt is a highlight for summer visitors and takes place every evening Tuesday through Sunday in the summer. While the main seated area requires a ticket, you can  enjoy the Berlin Symphony Orchestra or the German Opera in one of Berlin’s most beautiful squares from outside the perimeter fencing.
• The Berlin Philharmonic offers free concerts every Wednesday at 1 PM between September and June.
• Every Sunday, Mauerpark transforms into a sprawling block party. The main draw is the Bearpit Karaoke, but you’ll also find other free performances scattered throughout the grounds.
• Berlin hosts over 200 festivals annually, including some of the most anticipated international musical events like Berlinale Live, where celebrated film scores are performed for the cinema-lovers; the pioneering CTM Festival, a celebration of experimental electronic sound; Lollapalooza Berlin, the blockbuster pop and rock weekend; and the popular Fête de la Musique, with hundreds of free concerts across the city.

• Berlin has more museums than rainy days (about 170 compared to 106).
• Currywurst was invented in Berlin in 1949 by Herta Heuwer, who mixed ketchup with British curry powder.

• An abandoned airport runway is now a local weekend hangout. The former Tempelhof Airport is now a massive public park, where Berliners picnic, cycle and kitesurf on its runways.

• An iconic traffic light figure is a local celebrity. The cheerful Ampelmännchen (little traffic light man) from the GDR era was so beloved that Berliners protested to keep him after reunification. You can now find him on everything from socks to cookie cutters.
• 2025 marks the 35th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Commemorations include installations and events along the former ‘death strip’.  
• David Bowie lived in Berlin from 1976 to 1978. He famously called the city:

“The greatest cultural extravaganza that one could imagine.”

When You Go:

Berlin is easily accessible, with direct flights to Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) from several major North American cities, including New York, Washington-Dulles, Los Angeles, Miami and Toronto.

The easiest and most cost-effective method to get into the city from BER is the Airport Express (FEX) train. Taxis and ride-sharing services are available but significantly more expensive.

Woodstock, Vermont has become a destination for fall leaf peepers looking for an afternoon of apple picking and cider sipping, but the area has plenty to keep you entertained throughout the year. I consider myself a part-time Vermonter, and though I tend to spend most of my time in the small town in Southern Vermont my family lives in, when I get the chance to explore more of the Green Mountain State, I’m always impressed by the natural beauty, fantastic local food, and unending ways to entertain yourself, especially outdoors.

I recently spent a few nights at the Woodstock Inn and Resort for the property’s Summer Supper Series, but I experienced lot more than dinner. This historic hotel, recently renovated, is the picture of cozy New England comfort with plenty to do, whether you prefer outdoor adventure, a day on the links or some R&R in the spa.

The Inn has 142 rooms and suites, all of which underwent renovation in 2018. Mine felt like an elevated New England retreat with elegant drapery, upholstered furniture and Audubon prints on the walls. Unique furniture pieces made by local artisans make each room feel special and add to the feeling that you can truly make yourself at home in almost any corner of the hotel.

Dining

The Inn has four dining options on and off the main property.

• The Red Rooster serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, with a bar operating from 3 pm to 9 pm. Though I was pregnant during my stay and couldn’t sample the cocktails, my husband loved the signature negroni. In the late afternoon, this area becomes a warm and welcoming hangout spot for friends and strangers to mingle over local brews. Suffice it to say, this isn’t your typical stuffy hotel bar.
• Richardson’s Tavern serves dinner. The menu reflects Executive Chef Matthew McClure’s dedication to local ingredients. I recommend the chicken liver mousse served with fluffy zucchini bread for a rich but excellent appetizer. The chef’s vegetable plates rotate with the seasons and should not be skipped.
• During the summer, the Inn opens the Fairway Grill at the Woodstock Country Club for lunch from Wednesday to Sunday (the bar is open until 5 pm).
• On select Sundays and Thursdays from June to September, the Inn hosts dinners at Red Barns at Kelly Way Gardens, which was my reason for visiting the inn. Each night features a local producer in a multi-course dinner with wine pairings.

A ticket for a Thursday night dinner (which I experienced) gets you a more formal affair, including a cocktail hour in the gardens followed by a four-course seated dinner. More casual Sunday Suppers include three courses served family-style.

I visited for a Thursday night dinner featuring lamb from Five Sigma Farm. I loved getting to know our neighbors at the communal dinner table and hearing from the farmer about his approach to raising lamb using a system of rotating pastures. We could also watch the kitchen staff prepare each dish in the open kitchen — it’s always fun to get dinner and a show.

Don’t miss a visit to the gardens while staying at the Inn, where you can meander through rows of raspberries, fruit trees and edible flowers.

Amenities

• The spa offers facials, massages, aromatherapy and tinting and waxing. After your session, relax in the airy indoor atrium and warm up in a sauna or hot tub. I had a wonderful prenatal massage and my husband loved his deep tissue massage.
• Lounge by the outdoor pool during warmer months with food and drink service from the Red Rooster.
• The Inn is partnered with the Woodstock Golf Club for tee time.
• The on-site Activity Center offers fly fishing, biking and hiking expeditions for individuals and groups.
• The Woodstock Athletic Club sits three minutes down the road by car. The expansive facility includes cardio equipment, free weights and machines, plus an indoor lap pool and tennis and pickleball courts. We had a great time hitting around on the pickleball court; they have paddles and balls to use, but the courts are first-come, first-served.

What’s Nearby

There are ample opportunities for adventure, culinary delights and sightseeing in the region.

• Stop in Yankee Bookshop for best-sellers and local writers. We spent nearly an hour here browsing the shelves and each went home with a new paperback recommended by the staff.
• Visit Mon Vert for a hearty breakfast or lunch, followed by a maple creemee from Woodstock Scoops. The sandwiches at Mon Vert are ample and stuffed. I highly recommend anything made with local cheese.
• Drive 15 minutes to Queeche for the Simon Pearce flagship store. Browse beautiful glassware and ceramics and watch seasoned glassblowers at work. The restaurant here is a beautiful setting for a fancy lunch or dinner as well, but you’ll likely need a reservation to avoid a wait.
• The Billings Farm and Museum, a half mile from the hotel, makes a fun visit for kids (complimentary for Inn guests). Get you up close and personal with animals on the working dairy farm.
• King Arthur Flour headquarters in Norwich, Vermont is a baker’s paradise. I can’t visit without ordering a signature cinnamon roll. It’s unforgettable.

Getting There/Parking

It takes about two and a half hours to get to The Woodstock Inn and Resort from Boston. The closest airports are Burlington, Lebanon, New Hampshire, Manchester, New Hampshire and Boston Logan.

Amtrak trains from Boston, D.C., New York and Montreal stop in White River Junction, about 25 minutes from the Inn. Hotel guests get free on-site parking.

What’s Not So Great About the Yacht Club on MSC?

• It will spoil you for any future cruises in a standard cabin.

MSC’s Yacht Club

A dedicated section of the ship accessible only by “Yacht Club Members” sporting an electronic wristband, the area includes:

• A private lounge serving drinks, snacks and live entertainment throughout the day
• 5-star restaurant
• Sunny, uncrowded pool deck with its own bar
• Large cabins
• Elevated level of service

What’s Included

Most cruise lines sell their trips à la carte, charging one price for the cabin and included dining (the buffet and one or two sit-down restaurants) then upselling for everything else — drinks, wifi and specialty dining. Booking a cabin in the Yacht Club, however, includes:

• Butler service 24/7. Our butler, Vicente, was always ready to meet our every need, whether it was making dining reservations or ordering lunch on MSC’s private island.
• Private lounge and bar. The elegant Top Sail Lounge offers drinks, specialty coffees and gourmet snacks all day long. We heard some talented performers – reggae singers one night and an accomplished classical pianist the next – during the evening cocktail hour. And the service throughout Top Sail is top-notch.
• Complimentary premium drinks package. Top-shelf wines, cocktails and specialty coffees available in the Yacht Club. The drinks package works throughout the ship, where any drink costing $16 or less is included. Charges over $16 can be billed to your room.
• Unlimited Wifi, We put our phones on airplane mode, connected to the ship’s strong, reliable wifi and never experienced any roaming charges or international calling fees – even on MSC’s private island.
• Priority embarkation and disembarkation. The luxury experience started the minute we arrived at the Port of Miami. We were checked in, walked to a private waiting area, offered champagne, orange juice and snacks, then escorted onto the ship.
• Exclusive pool deck. The best part about the private sundeck, pool and hot tubs? We never had to fight for a lounge chair. This compares to a recent 20-day sail in a standard cabin on a different cruise line where we never, not once, got a lounger on the pool deck. Not even the morning I was out there at 6:30 am.
• Dedicated specialty restaurant. We had two meals at MSC’s specialty restaurants – the Butcher’s Cut steakhouse and Ocean Cay, a seafood restaurant – and one night in the Yacht Club restaurant. The food in the Yacht Club was as good, if not better. An added plus: dining in the Yacht Club restaurant came with that same 5-star Yacht Club service. If I cruise in the MSC Yacht Club again, I would not spring for the specialty restaurants. While the food in the specialty restaurants was very good, I missed the elevated level of service we got in the Yacht Club restaurant. It’s amazing how quickly we got spoiled!

• Unlimited access to the Thermal Spa. The large hot tub, salt room, steam room, sauna and specialty showers are the key to relaxation. We started our trip with a little time in the Thermal Spa followed by a 55-minute Balinese massage. Oh yes!
• Speedy elevator service. Our Yacht Club wristbands allowed us to program the elevators to take us directly to the floor we wanted – a real perk on a crowded ship where the elevators otherwise might stop on every floor.
• Priority seating at shows and excursions. I reserved seats via the MSC app, then found out Vicente was our ticket to the best seat in the house. Yacht Club members have reserved seating at every MSC performance. But don’t be late to the show – the seats are released to non-Yacht Club members five minutes before the show starts.
• Dedicated Yacht-Club-only area on MSC’s private island. We took the experience up a notch with a private cabana on the beach. It came with a cooler filled with water and champagne and Vicente, who served our lunch there. But, most importantly, it offered shade from the intense Bahamian sun. Bring sturdy water shoes with thick soles if you plan to swim off the Yacht Club beach. The shoreline and sea bottom are quite rocky.

SheBuysTravel Tip: If you think the luxury Yacht Club experience would be out of your budget, do the math before you book. Once you add in the cost of wifi, specialty dining and a drinks package – all included in the Yacht Club fee but an extra charge for regular passengers – chances are the cost to book into the Yacht Club is not that much more money, especially when you factor in the peace and pampering, not to mention the ability to grab a pool lounger any time of the day.

Our Yacht Club Cabin

I’ve been on ships where it was a squeeze just to walk between the bed and the desk. Not in the Yacht Club.

There was plenty of room for my husband and me to walk around, from the bedroom area or the sitting area, where Vicente regularly left us treats and champagne.

The room includes:

• A large balcony with two chairs and a café table
• Stocked minibar. Vicente asked what we wanted and then stocked it with our favorites.
• The biggest bathroom and shower I have ever seen on a cruise ship.
• Separate sleeping and sitting areas.
• Lighted closets.

The Yacht Club Restaurant

Located on Deck 17, a stairway up from the private Top Sail Lounge, the restaurant offers laid-back luxury and gourmet dining at breakfast, lunch and dinner. Dinner includes a front-row seat to the Caribbean sunsets.

The full-service menu changes daily with fresh seafood, premium cuts of meat and international specialties taking center stage. I had the chicken Kiev and hubby dined on a tender, rave-worthy filet mignon.

We lingered over coffee and dessert, listening to the pianist and watching the sunset, then headed downstairs for an after-dinner drink before heading to the theater for the evening Broadway-style show.

The Rest of the Ship

While you could stay in the Yacht Club cocoon for the entire trip, you also can partake of other parts of the ship, from the specialty restaurants to the bars to the water slides. Since it was just hubby and me on a 3-day cruise, we stuck to the Yacht Club and the Thermal Spa. But if we had been traveling with kids, a visit to the Deck 20 water slides and a ride on the Robotron would have been required.

One thing not to miss: the nightly entertainment in the Chora Theater. These immensely talented singers and dancers put on two high-energy 30-minute shows a night – at 7:30 and 9:30 pm. Plan dinner so you can make one show or the other.

Is the MSC Yacht Club Worth It?

Emphatically, yes. It combines the amenities of a mega-ship with the serenity of a luxury resort.

Overall Impressions

Located less than a mile from the airport, Sonesta Los Angeles Airport LAX is an excellent choice for families. It balances modern design with practical conveniences – like a free airport shuttle and lots of places to eat.

The hotel recently completed a $42 million dollar renovation, and the results leave no doubt it was money well spent. The lobby and check-in area is upscale, with lots of comfortable seating. Outside the main entrance, there are more cozy areas to relax and even fire pits waiting to be enjoyed; perfect if you are waiting for the airport shuttle or valet to bring your car around.

If you’re flying in or out of Los Angeles and want a comfortable hotel that works for both kids and adults, the Sonesta Los Angeles Airport LAX is a great choice. This large, newly renovated property offers lots of upscale comforts and amenities for an incredibly reasonable room rate.

Pros

• One of the closest hotels to LAX

• Four on-site restaurants with a variety of cuisines

• Spacious, soundproofed guest rooms (important since you’re so close to the airport)

• 24/7 free airport shuttle service

• Family-friendly conveniences like in-room refrigerators and room service

• Pet-friendly hotel ($150 fee per stay)

Cons

• Parking fees can be pricey
• Breakfast is not always included in room rates and is expensive if purchased separately
• There is a heated outdoor pool, but it is very small
• Busy property with lots of travelers coming and going, making check-in and airport shuttles crowded at peak times

SheBuysTravel Tip: Opt for a room facing the airport for some cool views of planes coming in for a landing. It is quite entertaining and the soundproof windows mean you can enjoy the sights without the sounds.

Accommodations

There are several types of rooms available at the Sonesta Los Angeles Airport LAX, all recently remodeled with either two queen or one king bed. They also have suites available.

We stayed in a Preferred King room on a high floor with a great view of the airport. Our room had a long, horizontal window facing a runway, which we soon realized was for the international terminal, and it was fun seeing all the different airlines from around the world coming in for a landing.

This is also a great place to note that the rooms have excellent soundproofing. Before arriving, we thought it might be loud due to the hotel’s proximity to the airport. But quite the opposite was true; our room was completely quiet, despite the airplanes.

The rooms at Sonesta LAX are modern, clean, and well-designed with a desk and small sofa under the window. The bed was comfortable and had plush bedding. There was a big TV with access to streaming apps, a coffee maker, and a mini fridge – perfect for storing snacks and our restaurant leftovers.

Dining Options at Sonesta LAX

One of the standout features of this property is its variety of on-site dining:

• Century Taproom – California-inspired pub fare with craft beer, burgers, steaks, and pizza.
• Yokoso Sushi Bar – Fresh sushi and sashimi in a sleek setting.
• Boulevard Market Café – Quick bites like sandwiches, salads, rotisserie chicken, pasta, and pizza—easy options for kids.
• The Landing Restaurant – Classic American breakfast buffet and à la carte items.
• Room Service – Available 24/7 for ultimate convenience.

This range of dining options makes it easy to feed the whole family without leaving the hotel.

Our room came with breakfast, so we enjoyed the breakfast buffet at the Landing Restaurant both mornings we were there. The buffet was a fairly standard spread with eggs, fruit, pastries, French toast, and the like. All the food was hot and fresh and we enjoyed it, but I don’t think it would have been worth the $38 per person if it was not included with our stay.

You can also help yourself to grab and go items in the Market Café if you don’t have time for a sit-down breakfast.

For dinner, we enjoyed a great meal at Century Taproom. My husband and I shared a big salad and pizza, and it easily could have fed three or four of us. (The fridge in our room came in very handy for leftovers!)

Century Taproom also has a wide variety of steaks, chicken, burgers, sandwiches, and more. Since they make the pizza in a specialty oven right in front of you, that’s what we wanted to try. It was really good! The restaurant also features a full bar.

Hotel Amenities

Whether you’re arriving by car or flying into LAX, the Sonesta Los Angeles Airport LAX offers a variety of onsite amenities to make travel easier.

Here are some of the standout amenities:

• 24/7 Free Airport Shuttle : Runs every 20–30 minutes. Very handy for arrival or departures without worrying about rides.
• 24/7 Fitness Center : The fitness center got a complete upgrade during the hotel’s remodel and features state-of-the-art equipment including Peloton bikes.
• 24/7 Room Service : So you can have a bite no matter what time you arrive.
• Business Center and Meeting Rooms: if you need a quiet space to work
• Laundry / Dry Cleaning Services : Always a plus when traveling.

Though it’s relatively small, there is also an outdoor heated pool . Kids can splash off energy after a long flight, while parents relax in a lounge chair. The pool is located on a rooftop off the third floor, making for some nice views.

Things to Do Nearby

While Sonesta is primarily an airport hotel, it’s also a good jumping-off point for L.A. adventures.

Keep in mind however, that dreaded word that shapes everywhere you drive in Southern California: Traffic. Although something might look close on a map, L.A. traffic can make getting there pretty rough. For instance, the weekend we stayed at the Sonesta Los Angeles Airport LAX, my husband and I thought it would be fun to check out the Santa Monica Pier. The 11-mile drive took us nearly 45 minutes.

Traffic concerns aside, the hotel’s central location puts you in close proximity to many of the city’s biggest attractions. Visit the iconic Venice Beach for a day in the sun. Enjoy a thrilling sporting event at SoFi Stadium or a live performance at The Kia Forum , both just a short drive away.

Hollywood and downtown L.A. are both around 30 minutes from the hotel. And you can reach the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim in less than an hour.

Parking at Sonesta LAX

The hotel offers both self-parking and valet parking. While convenient, fees are on the higher side (typical for LAX hotels). The self-parking garage is shared with long-term airport parking and is very secure.

Sonesta Los Angeles Airport LAX self-parking is $50 per night (including in-and-out access), while valet parking is available for $60 plus tax per night .

Final Thoughts

The Sonesta Los Angeles Airport LAX is more than just an airport hotel. Times Square requires a little mental prep. Staying there meant preparing myself for noise, energy and a whole lot of people. So when I checked into the Tempo by Hilton Times Square with a colleague for a conference, I was expecting long days and sleepless nights.

But I actually slept. Soundly. In Midtown. The restaurant and bar doubles as a lobby, so there’s a natural hum of activity, but the energy of Times Square stays outside. We each had our own room but they were large enough to fit two people comfortably. The decor is contemporary and minimal but not cold, with a modern bathroom. The closet is more of a rack with no doors but it did come equipped with a steamer.

First Impressions and Security

I liked being greeted by security at the entrance off of 48th Street. It was reassuring to know only guests and staff were coming in and out and they were always available to point us in the right direction. Check-in was smooth, and the staff is friendly and professional. The bellman is a pro, managing multiple guests with bags quickly and ready with transportation recommendations.

Location You Can’t Beat

Tempo is in Times Square, not “a short walk to” – you’re in it. Our conference was steps away, which made it easy to pop back to the room between sessions. For theater lovers, Broadway shows are around the corner. For shoppers, Fifth Avenue is nearby. Business travelers are well-positioned to get anywhere else in Midtown quickly.

We walked to Tempo from Grand Central Terminal but we could have taken the subway – the train is steps from the hotel’s front door.

Spectacular Views

I couldn’t get enough of the views. Floor-to-ceiling windows provide a bird’s-eye view of the neon glow of Times Square and the Manhattan skyline. We were on the 11th floor and I looked forward to hanging out in the chair in the window cubby watching the chaos below.

And the rooms are great too: clean, modern and smartly laid out. Outlets and USB ports are plentiful. The bathroom is normal sized with great lighting and although the closet didn’t have doors, it did have a steamer, which I used a lot.

Electronic blinds offer blackout and opaque curtain options but I couldn’t get them to cooperate. It was either full daylight or complete blackout for me. Not a dealbreaker, but it was funny trying to finesse them into a “just a sliver of light” mode.

SheBuysTravel Tip: Request a high-floor room facing Times Square. You might still hear the city below, but the views more than make up for it. It’s the best way to experience the buzz of Times Square without feeling like you’re drowning in it.

The Waldorf Astoria Chicago is a historic 5-star hotel in the affluent and safe downtown Gold Coast district, surrounded by tree-lined streets, upscale eateries and couture shopping. As a frequent world traveler, I was excited for my first visit to the hotel. I’ve visited Chicago previously and this time I took my 21-year-old son who had never visited a big city before.

Unmatched Arrival Experience

Arriving at The Waldorf Chicago felt like we were transported to a royal welcome at a European hotel. Greeted by an expansive cobblestone courtyard with a flower-adorned fountain in the center, my nerves were immediately calmed at this oasis in the bustling city. The staff noticed our arrival and assisted with valet parking and admittance into the hotel lobby. The customer service here is unrivaled and we felt special and welcome in an entirely safe environment.

Luxurious Common Spaces

The star of the grand lobby of The Waldorf Chicago is the incredible sparkling chandelier inspired by fashion icon Coco Chanel and her famed brooch pin. It dangles inside the front entry and is the focal point for all eyes – hanging over the rest of the hotel’s classic black and white interior, highlighted with glorious fresh flowers and the bright hues behind the front desk.

Adjacent to the main lobby is the Peacock Lounge, a sophisticated spot to read or wait for transportation. With rich hues and dark wood, the fireplace and comfortable seating are a nice place to commune outside of your hotel room.

Rooms and Suites

The Waldorf Astoria Chicago features 214 elegantly designed rooms and suites across 19 floors. With Parisian-inspired decor, a private courtyard entrance and terraces and fireplaces in select suites, the stay here is entirely worth it.

Glimpse Inside a Guest Room or Suite:

Deluxe two queen or king: We stayed in a deluxe two-queen room, which seemed more like a suite in a regular hotel. Featuring two luxurious queen beds with 400-thread-count sheets, this elegant room infused with French fashion-inspired décor, had many sophisticated touches.

Other room options:

• Terrace king: offers a private terrace with city vistas
• Junior suite: features a fireplace and an extra seating area
• One-bedroom terrace: available as a corner room with a fireplace
• Larger Astoria Suites: expansive living areas, separate bedrooms and often private terraces and fireplaces

Featuring a chef’s kitchen, multiple hospitality areas, a private bedroom with fireplace and terrace, and an oversized bath with views of the Gold Coast, this is a stylish splurge. The staff treated me to a private tour of this space since it was not reserved during my stay. It was fun to imagine how the rich and famous get to live!

Expect to pay at least $600 per night, depending on room category and dates.

• Windows that crack to let in fresh air. This is not always available in high-rise hotels and was a nice surprise to be able to open a window and hear the city come to life in the morning!

Dining & Beverage

• The Brass Tack restaurant blends ambiance with traditional favorites for lunch, dinner and weekend bottomless brunch. A must-try is the signature Waldorf Salad, the classic nut and fruit salad on a bed of lettuce, created at The Waldorf New York City in 1890.
• Bernard’s offers refined cocktails surrounded by strapping décor for an intimate, stylish bar experience perfect for pre-dinner drinks or a quiet nightcap.

SheBuysTravel Tip: Nearby on Rush Street is The Bellevue, a casual yet upscale eatery with an ample outdoor patio. It’s great for weekend brunch and people watching (you might see an NBA star stroll by or several spoiled dogs with their owners) and offers a mix of good cocktails, brunch faves like eggs Benedict and omelets or lunch/dinner fare.

Amenities

Pool: A narrow indoor swimmer’s pool is housed in its own wing with chaise lounges and daybeds for relaxing with a book or magazine. There’s enough room to swim a few laps or simply take a refreshing dip.

Fitness: State-of-the-art equipment and personalized Pilates classes in a reformer studio. This is not your typical hotel fitness center. This fitness space is expansive with multiple cardio machines, free weights, strength training equipment and mat equipment. No other fitness classes were offered, and Pilates classes did have a fee.

The Spa

• Traditional therapeutic and body treatment services such as massage, facials, manicures and pedicures
• Customized services for men including facial shaves
• Private sun deck with drink service and a true urban sanctuary vibe on an upper floor with views of the cityscape and the Waldorf courtyard below
• The spa books well in advance, plan to schedule at least two weeks prior to a desired service. My reservation was last minute, so unfortunately I was not able to experience a treatment first-hand, but the staff was gracious and gave me a tour.
• Valet parking for hotel and spa guests is available for a fee or use the self-parking garage one block away

What’s Nearby

Chicago’s Gold Coast neighborhood is considered one of the city’s most affluent communities. The main streets are safe and easily walkable. It’s fun to stroll by the couture fashion boutiques. The side streets are lined with multimillion-dollar single-family homes and deluxe residential high-rises. In addition to stunning vintage architecture, the neighborhood has an abundance of towering trees, green foliage and landscaped sidewalk planters.

• Washington Square Park is one block from The Waldorf Chicago and is an entire block of green space with a towering fountain in the middle.
• Oak Street Beach is two blocks east of the hotel, making the Lake Michigan lakefront easily accessible to Waldorf Astoria guests.
• The Magnificent Mile and its many shops and attractions are a decent walk or an easy ride-share service away. The Willis Tower is one of the tallest buildings in the world and has the SkyDeck experience for a bird’s eye view of the city.
• The world-renowned Art Institute of Chicago has many custom pieces and something for everyone. Stay an hour or an entire day. Directly across the street from the main Michigan Avenue entrance and its lion statues is the origin of Route 66, marked by large signage. The summer of 2026 marks the 200^th anniversary for this iconic American vehicle route, making this a great photo opportunity.
• Chicago tourist mainstays like Millennium Park and “ The Bean ” sculpture, Navy Pier, The Field Museum, Shedd Aquarium and the famed Chicago Riverwalk area are must-sees for first-time visitors to the city.

SheBuysTravel Tip: If you plan to visit at least three of the above attractions, consider purchasing a CityPass, with reduced admission prices and expedited entry to the SkyDeck at Willis Tower (a huge timesaver over waiting in line).

Getting There

There are two airports in the area, Chicago Midway and Chicago O’Hare International Airport. Midway is closer to downtown. A ride-share service will run around $50 before tip from O’Hare to The Waldorf Chicago.
