Merida may be famous for its colorful culture and its proximity to beaches, cenotes and Mayan sites. But you might be surprised to learn about its thriving nightlife scene. If you’re planning a group trip to my hometown, the safe and walkable Centro Historico provides the ideal backdrop for a night out.

The district’s 47th Street was recently renovated and turned into a pedestrian-only dining area, known as “the Gastronomic Corridor.” Covering a span of five blocks, the street encompasses some of Merida’s top entertainment venues, including casual eateries, fine dining restaurants and themed bars with live music.

Here’s my personal roundup of unmissable spots, as someone who’s experienced the iconic culinary row from its very beginning.

SheBuysTravel Tip: Skip the airport stress — Lyft’s On-Time Pickup Promise guarantees your scheduled ride shows up within 10 minutes of your pickup time. If it doesn’t? You’ll get Lyft Cash. You can schedule up to 90 days in advance and even lock in your rate. Use code to save 25% off ONE scheduled ride to the airport.

Are you ready to explore off the beaten path? Let us inspire you!

1. El Lucero

An array of traditional Yucatan snacks, mostly containing corn dough treats and tacos.
Botanas at El Lucero. Crunch kibis can be seen at the front. Photo credit: Regina Zumarraga Rosado

Get the evening going with beer and snacks in a laid-back setting. El Lucero is a classic Yucatan cantina, now revamped to welcome all kinds of visitors (cantinas were originally conceived as male-only bars). Following the nationwide trend of redefining this type of venue, El Lucero now boasts a vibrant aura with live music, refreshing cocktails and an outdoor area with tropical decor.

Sample the region’s take on botanas, going from simple seasoned veggies to mouthwatering inventions such as the pumpkin seed dip known as sikil pak, crunchy fried wheat kibis and doughy chayitas, made out of corn and leaves from the native chaya plant.

SheBuysTravel Tip: Cantinas serve an array of “free” snacks depending on your drink consumption. The more drinks you buy, the better food you get. While El Lucero does have a menu you can order from, I recommend taking advantage of this peculiar practice.

2. Oliva Enoteca

If you’d like to have a full meal before hitting the bars, Oliva Enoteca offers exquisite Italian food in a sophisticated atmosphere with an open kitchen layout. Savor a delectable pasta dish paired with fine wine. Their agnolotti and tiramisu are absolutely delightful.

As Oliva is frequented by Yucatecans and travelers alike, you might want to make a reservation ahead of time if visiting over the weekend.

3. 130 Grados Steakhouse

Restaurant entrance with a light-up sign.

Another great option for a lovely dinner, this upscale steakhouse provides high-quality cuts and innovative mixology. Step into the dimly lit venue and take in the stylish decor in muted tones, setting the mood for a superb culinary feast.

Along with their standard premium cuts, the menu features an original dish customers love: a New York strip steak with a coffee crust. 130 Grados is one of the most popular restaurants in all of Merida. Therefore, I would also recommend booking in advance.

4. Micaela Mar & Leña

Small cake shaped in the form of a piñata. A candle and a note with a Spanish phrase next to it.

As eccentric as it is delicious, Micaela has quickly turned into a local favorite. Its animated vibe with bright colors and exuberant art reflects the essence of its unconventional cuisine. Inspired by the cooking of Mexican grandmothers, Micaela injects a homey quality into their signature beef and seafood dishes.

Try the traditional Mexican antojitos from their appetizer menu and please do yourself a favor by leaving some room for dessert. Their Maíz and Cacao creations are absolutely heavenly. Even though you may not need a reservation to visit Micaela, I’d recommend making one just to be safe.

5. Catrín

A colorful mural on the back wall of a bar, featuring a large skeleton and other Mexican culture objects.

If I had to pick just one location out of this list, it’d hands-down be Catrín. This lively bar, lined with colorful art, delves into Mexican folklore with a theme designed after the Catrín character. As a lifelong Meridana, I can guarantee that a visit to equals a good time.

Sit indoors for a quiet meal or lean into the party mood by enjoying drinks and upbeat music in the outdoor area. Visit after dark to take in the mesmerizing animations projected on the back wall.

6. Ignoto

Outdoor night club with red and blue lasers. People can be seen dancing and taking photos.

On Friday and Saturday nights, keep an eye out for a line of eager young locals standing outside of Homu, a celebrated Japanese restaurant across the street from Catrín. Now, the real treasure lies behind it. A bustling secret night club with beachy vibes, Ignoto is one of the city’s latest hot spots, known for its live DJ events.

Electronic music takes over the room on Friday nights, then pop and reggaeton provide a fun ambiance for boisterous dance parties on Saturdays. Their diverse roster of DJs and regular special guests create a dynamic mood for the ultimate night out.

7. Ánima

Small room with red walls covered in black scribbles. A shuffleboard table is at the center of the room.

I will always prioritize locally-owned businesses when talking about developing cities, such as Merida. However, this outstanding farm-to-table restaurant, conceived by a Kansas City native, has more than earned a mention on this list.

With a strong focus on offset smoker and open fire cooking methods, Ánima presents a carefully curated selection of grilled meat, seafood, and veggie dishes. Being a longtime vegetarian, I find myself coming back time after time for their avocado jocoque beet.

The front section of the refurbished home contains a tiny bar with bright red walls covered in black artwork, while the restaurant is located in the backyard. Try your hand at shuffleboard and taste their creative cocktails before or after dinner.

8. 47th Street Piano Bar

Restaurant facade with two small black doors located to the right, giving access to a secret bar.

A hidden gem, known only to some lucky ones, this compact lounge features a live piano player every night. Regulars huddle together around the piano and sing along to contemporary pieces as they sip on their drinks. Feeling brave? Consider tackling a song by yourself.

While my experiences here have been overall positive, the bar does tend to become extremely crowded on the weekends. Security can also be somewhat selective, having been known to turn people away without any explanation. It might still make for an interesting stop if you are a fan of live music.

SheBuysTravel Tip: Look for two doors with the number 478B above them, nestled between restaurants Yakuza and Marmalade. The one on the right gives you access to the bar. You’ll usually see the host standing by it.

9. La Estelar

Facade of a colonial home turned restaurant, painted blue with two old-fashioned lamps above the front door.

47th Street’s latest addition, La Estelar’s modern design emulates the look of a run-down cantina, incorporating contemporary art pieces and an elegant round bar at the center of the room. Choose from a variety of Yucatecan and Mexican dishes, as well as emblematic street eats like the torta ahogada and the burrito percherón. On top of the authentic food and great drinks, have a go at salsa dancing with music by an energetic live band.

10. El Poch del Huach

Meat tacos with chopped onions and cilantro, served on red plastic plates.

Mexicans love to end a night out with a taco run. This traditional taqueria is perfect for a quick stop in between bar-hopping or right after it. Delight your taste buds with meat guisos such as pastor, chuleta, longaniza, bistec and arrachera, served in nachos, tacos and gringas (tacos with melted cheese).

Take a break from partying the way locals do at this informal, but clean, establishment located in a charming passageway shared with other businesses. Vegetarians may also indulge in cactus or mushroom tacos.

SheBuysTravel Tip: Make sure to try the chicharron de queso, a crispy, savory treat made from melted and hardened cheese. Additionally, don’t forget to top your tacos with salsas, onions and cilantro..

Whether you’re looking for inspiration for your next family holiday or dreaming up the perfect solo adventure, add my hometown, Merida, to your bucket list. A much quieter alternative to Cancun, Tulum and Playa del Carmen, it tends to fly under the radar for those visiting the Yucatan Peninsula.

Merida, originally the Mayan settlement of T’ho, was founded by Spanish conquistadors in 1542. Serving as the capital of Mexico’s Yucatan state, the city offers a unique blend of Mayan heritage and Spanish influence. See for yourself as you walk past the elegant mansions of Paseo de Montejo and try traditional treats from street-side stands.

Overall Impressions

As a Merida native, I genuinely believe that anyone, regardless of age, gender or interests, can find something exciting to do while in town. That being said, visiting Yucatan is more about experiencing the culture than ticking off famous landmarks. Therefore, I’d recommend this destination to solo travelers or families who can afford to spend at least a few weeks in the area.

Immersing yourself in local culture comes effortlesly. Enjoy the Centro Historico’s free experiences, such as live trova music, folkloric dance performances and Mayan ritual reenactments. Walk around safely, be it with young children or on your own as a woman, even after dark.

SheBuysTravel Tip: A little kindness goes a long way. While most businesses have English-speaking staff, locals will surely appreciate being greeted in Spanish. Nothing too crazy, try learning simple sentences like “Buenos días/buenas noches” (good morning and good evening), “por favor” and “gracias” (please and thank you), “disculpe” (excuse me) and maybe even “¿cuánto cuesta?” (how much does this cost?) when shopping.

Pros of Visiting Merida

  • Often ranked among the safest cities in the Americas
  • Authentic cultural activities hosted by locals
  • Close proximity to beaches, cenotes and Mayan sites
  • Less crowded than other Mexican destinations
  • Efficient public transport and little traffic

Cons of Visiting Merida

  • Beaches aren’t as nice as those on the Caribbean side of the Peninsula
  • Extreme heat that might hinder your sightseeing plans

SheBuysTravel Tip: Plan to arrive between the months of October and March so you have plenty of time to acclimate to the warm weather before summer hits. May and June are usually our hottest months, with temperatures averaging daily highs of 96ºF.

Things to Do in Merida

Merida City Hall, a modest colonial building.

Kick off your stay by exploring Plaza Grande, the main square, where you’ll become acquainted with Merida’s history. Gaze at the imposing facade of San Ildefonso Cathedral, admire the murals at Palacio de Gobierno, browse the art exhibits at MACAY Museum and Olimpo Cultural Center, and tour the Casa Montejo, once home to Yucatan’s conquistadors.

To keep the little ones engaged and happy, take a break from sightseeing by getting lunch somewhere along 47th Street – Cafetería Impala is a local staple – before making your way to the adjacent Parque La Plancha. Once there, you can stop by the interactive Museo de la Luz, explore Merida’s former train station and see the old wagons scattered around the massive park.

SheBuysTravel Tip: Make sure to keep some change on you at all times, as street food stands and markets will not take cards. Mexican pesos are the only currency used in the area, but fear not, you can get them upon arrival at currency exchange booths or directly from an ATM for the best rates.

Places to Eat in Merida

Facade of a traditional hacienda, Hacienda Teya.

No trip to Merida would be complete without a meal at Hacienda Teya, my go-to for regional cuisine. Located on the grounds of a 17th-century hacienda on the outskirts of the city, this beloved restaurant offers a wide array of Yucatecan dishes, including a juicy cochinita pibil (traditional pork dish) and exquisite papadzules (egg tacos covered in pumpkin seed sauce).

For a quick meal on the go, stop at Mercado de Santa Ana for a taste of Yucatan’s own panuchos and salbutes. Alternatively, head over to the iconic Parque de Las Americas, a great spot to try marquesitas, esquites and other street food kids tend to love.

When in need of a break from traditional food, visit La Tratto Santa Lucia, Holoch, Paseo 60 or Emplumado, all in the downtown area.

Where to Stay in Merida

Colonial 3-story buildings in Merida's oldest neighborhood.

I can’t recommend the Centro Historico enough for your first visit. The colorful barrios of Santiago, Santa Lucía and La Mejorada are all within walking distance of historic buildings, bustling markets, high-end restaurants and contemporary art galleries.

When it comes to accommodation options, you have an endless list of possibilities. Book a refurbished colonial home for longer stays or indulge in the comfort of 24/7 amenities at a boutique hotel. Decu Downtown and Hotel Sureño, each awarded one Michelin Key, truly shine due to their timeless charm and excellent location, just a stone’s throw away from all the action.

What’s Nearby

Top family-friendly activities include day trips to the beach, as well as cenotes, haciendas and Mayan ruins. Consider checking out my top choices:

A long industrial pier and the ocean at sunset.

  • Malecon de Progreso . A lively seaside boulevard in the town of Progreso, the Malecon makes for a lovely beach getaway. Spend the day relaxing by the ocean and eat lunch at one of the many beachfront restaurants.
A freshwater canal surrounded by lush vegetation.

  • Hacienda Mucuyché . Tour the remnants of a real hacienda, then swim in its majestic cenotes—an ideal cenote trip with small children, as steps have been built in to avoid slipping. If you wish to visit a working hacienda, I suggest looking into Hacienda Aké.
A small Mayan temple built out of stones.

  • Dzibilchaltun. The closest Mayan archaeological site is just 20 minutes away from Merida. While not as impressive as Chichen Itza, it’s definitely worth a visit.

Items to Pack

Make the most of your time in Merida and avoid any heat-related mishaps by bringing light, breathable clothing (locals love fabrics like cotton and linen), as well as shoes. I personally wear rubber Birkenstocks everywhere I go.

Other musts include sunscreen, hats and insect repellent for the more humid months. Additionally, fine dining restaurants usually have a dress code, so pack a pair of dress pants or a cocktail dress and closed-toe shoes if you’re planning to visit one.

Getting There

You can fly into Cancun then take a 4-hour train or bus ride to Merida, or travel directly to Merida’s smaller airport, depending on where you’re flying from. The Merida airport receives direct flights from Miami, Orlando, Dallas, Houston and Toronto, while the Cancun airport receives daily arrivals from over 100 international locations.

Overall Impressions

I can’t imagine a more perfect romantic escape than MIRA Earth Studios. Perched in the sun-drenched hills of Valle de Guadalupe, less than two hours south of San Diego, MIRA is a masterclass in eco-luxury. This adults-only retreat offers a stunning blend of rugged nature and thoughtful design, where ten rammed-earth studios with floor-to-ceiling windows gaze out over Mexico’s wine country.

Each room is a private sanctuary, complete with a private Jacuzzi, sauna, fire pit and curated minibar. It’s the ideal escape for couples seeking to unplug, reconnect, and sip on the region’s finest vintages from their own secluded hideaway.

This trip was hosted but all opinions are my own.

Why Stay at MIRA Earth Studios

MIRA Earth Studio’s green roofs, planted with native vegetation, forge a seamless bond with the surrounding landscape.

Pros

  • Awe‑inspiring panoramic views of vineyards and rust-hued hills
  • Private Jacuzzi, sauna, fire‑pit, and kitchenette per studio
  • Seamless integration with nature via rammed-earth walls and green roofs

Cons

  • Terraced access and steps make it unsuitable for mobility-limited guests
  • Remote: about a two-hour drive from Tijuana Airport

Best For

  • MIRA Earth Studios are best for couples seeking solitude, architectural intrigue, and privacy—think digital detoxers and design lovers.
  • This is NOT for those seeking family-friendly activities, a lively nightlife scene, or those with mobility concerns due to the rugged terrain.

Accommodations

Sunrise over the Valle de Guadalupe.

Each of the ten studios are built into the earth giving them a cave-like feel. Glass doors slide open to a private terrace with wide-angle views over the Guadalupe Valley, a gas fire pit, and a sunken hot tub that became my go-to spot at night. More than once I cracked open the s’mores kit, used the fire pit to warm up the marshmallow and ate them soaking in the hot tub watching the star-filled sky.

The space inside pairs minimalist lines with thoughtful touches like a king bed with crisp linens, a rainfall shower, and an infrared sauna.. The kitchenette is stocked like someone knew exactly what I’d want after a day in the Valle—local wines, artisanal snacks, and enough coffee gear to make my morning pour-over a ritual.

SheBuysTravel Tip: Don’t miss sunrise from your bed. In the morning use the remote to lift the blackout shades and watch the first light pour over the valley through the floor-to-ceiling windows.

Onsite Dining

The new onsite restaurant, Mira Poolside, is a collaboration with Chef José Luis Hinostroza. Enjoy delicious “poolside bites” such as fresh shellfish with spicy aguachile and DIY wagyu tacos. The menu is perfect for a relaxed afternoon. The bar serves barreled wine spritzers and local craft beer.

For in-room dining, we ordered a breakfast basket and enjoyed the convenience of the well-stocked kitchenette, which included local coffee and frozen pizzas from Tanto Santo Pizzeria.

Onsite Entertainment

While MIRA is about disconnecting, there’s still plenty to do. The infinity pool deck at Mira Poolside is the main hub, with wooden pergolas, low-seated lounge areas, and a DJ booth. The private hot tubs on each terrace provide a romantic and intimate form of entertainment, especially under the starry night sky. The property itself is perfect for a short hike to appreciate the natural surroundings.

Excursions

Picture of classic car used for winery tours in Valle de Guadalupe Mexico.

The Valle de Guadalupe is the heart of Mexico’s wine country with a long list of wineries all within a short drive.  Monte Xanic is one of the valley’s most established wineries known for its panoramic tasting room where you can sample the region’s mineral-driven whites to full-bodied red while overlooking the surrounding hills.

With great wine come great food. There are many Michelin-starred and Green Star restaurants in the region including Animalón, Olivea Farm to Table and Lunario. Many spotlight local ingredients, open-air dining, and inventive takes on Baja flavors. With so many clustered close together, it’s easy to pair a day of tastings with a standout meal.

What’s Nearby

Hussong’s Cantina is Baja California’s oldest bar.

If you’re craving seafood, drive 30 minutes west to Ensenada. I had the best oysters of my life from El Güero – a seafood card one block from the ocean. From there, wander over to Hussong’s Cantina, Baja’s oldest bar, pouring drinks since 1892 and rumored to be the birthplace of the margarita. Before heading back to the valley, stop at Mercado Negro, Ensenada’s bustling fish market, where you can browse stalls stacked with fresh catch and pick up a ceviche to-go.

Getting There

Fly into San Diego or Tijuana. The quickest option is to use Cross Border Xpress, a pedestrian bridge from the U.S. directly into Tijuana’s airport, then rent a car for the two-hour drive to MIRA. The hotel can also arrange private transfers from Tijuana (about US$260 each way for two).

Driving from San Diego via the San Ysidro crossing takes 1.5–2 hours, depending on wait times. Mexican auto liability insurance is required, and most U.S. rental cars can’t be taken into Mexico—renting in Tijuana is the simplest route.

If you’ve booked a cruise that stops in Ensenada, Mexico—need not fret. Especially if you’re a first-time cruiser like I was. My mom, sister and I booked the 4-day Catalina and Ensenada Carnival Cruise to ease our way in and figure out if we were “true cruisers.”

Beyond the curated cruise terminal, Ensenada shines brightest when explored with locals. I’ll share how Arturo Ensenada Tours transformed our stop into an authentic day of horseback riding, margaritas and cultural gems—proving the best shore excursions aren’t always booked through the ship.

Use code SBT25 to save 25% off ONE scheduled ride to the airport.

Disclosure: Arturo Ensenada Tours provided a discounted press rate for this experience. All opinions are my own.

What to Expect

Arturo’s team created a personalized itinerary that skipped tourist traps and delivered authentic moments. From peaceful beaches to bustling markets, we felt safe, welcomed and completely immersed. This is the kind of shore and city excursion where you don’t just visit Ensenada—you experience it.

Best for:

  • Multi-generational families wanting an easy, safe day off the ship
  • Women travelers looking for personalized, immersive experiences
  • Small groups or couples who prefer more private tours

The tour is available year-round. We went in August—despite the summer heat, the coastal breeze kept it very comfortable. La Bufadora, the marine blowhole, is active all day, though tide strength varies.

  • Valle de Guadalupe – Mexico’s wine country (40 min drive). This was heavily recommended to me by a co-worker. We didn’t have time but will next time!
  • Rosarito Beach – Surf town vibes (1.5 hours).

Dress Code/Specialty Items to Pack

  • Closed-toe shoes for horseback riding
  • Light jacket for coastal breezes
  • Small bills in pesos for market shopping
  • Sun protection (hat, SPF, sunglasses)

Getting There/When to Go

Is it safe to get off the cruise ship in Ensenada? Yes—stick to trusted operators like Arturo Tours, and you’ll feel secure the whole time.

Can you walk to downtown Ensenada from the cruise port? Technically yes (about 15–20 min), but Arturo’s meeting point is just 5 minutes away, making it easier.

Why do cruise ships stop in Ensenada, Mexico? It’s a convenient, culturally rich port close to Southern California itineraries.

Is Ensenada a tender port? No—you dock directly at the pier.

What are the best shore excursions or things to do in Ensenada? Beach horseback riding, La Bufadora, the Original Margarita Museum, and local markets top the list.

We visited in August, and it was fantastic—warm weather, ocean breeze and plenty of time to explore without feeling rushed.

Arturo Tours prefers payment in cash so go to an ATM beforehand or they take Zelle!

Note of Thanks

A special thank you to Arturo Tours for such a rich and memorable experience—and for giving us a story we’ll be talking about for years. Arturo was under the weather the day of our tour, but he made sure we could still go, and David became our guide. He was absolutely incredible—knowledgeable, kind and the kind of person who turns a great trip into an unforgettable one!

Babymoons are one of the hottest travel trends as more and more couples book a quiet escape before the newborn arrives and changes everything. Mi Amor, a beautiful resort tucked inside Tulum’s Jaguar National Park, was built for exactly that kind of trip. It’s an adults-only hotel designed around romance and calm.

Each of the 20 rooms comes with private plunge pool or shaded terrace facing the sea, and everything about the hotel — daybeds, cliffside cabanas, spa treatments for two — is meant to give couples space to slow down and stay close.

Editor’s Note: The writer was hosted.

Overall Impressions

Designed with couples in mind, the hotel’s layout encourages intimacy: love seats built for two line the infinity pool, spa treatments are offered in open-air jungle cabanas and the restaurant’s cliffside tables are spaced to make each meal feel like a private occasion. The romantic hotel designs tailor-made experiences based on what the soon-to-be-parents are dreaming of for their special getaway.

Perched on a dramatic rocky bluff inside Tulum’s recently designated Jaguar National Park, Mi Amor channels the sultry glamour of 1950s Acapulco with a tropical twist. With only 20 rooms, the vibe is more private villa than resort—meaning you have uninterrupted access to that protected coastline without beach club crowds or scooter noise. And yes, being inside the park boundary does require a small daily entry fee—but it also grants access to walking trails, rituals of local wildlife conservation and views you simply can’t beat.

SheBuysTravel Tip: One of the most romantic experiences on the property is Mi Amor’s private, candlelit cliffside dinners. Spots are limited and book up quickly, so email the concierge ahead of time to lock in a sunset reservation during your stay.

Accommodations

Each of Mi Amor’s 20 rooms blends chic, minimalist design with the kind of Caribbean views that make you slow down and stay awhile. Some have sweeping ocean panoramas that feel like they’re pulled from a movie scene, while others open to the lush, tropical gardens alive with birdsong.

My room had a private plunge pool right off the terrace — a serious luxury when you can slip in for a soak under the stars without ever leaving your robe. It’s one of those features that makes you want to plan your entire day around doing absolutely nothing.

Inside, a king‑size bed dressed in crisp linens invites long, lazy mornings you won’t get much of once the baby arrives. Rainfall showers double as spa moments, and thoughtful touches—a Nespresso machine for coffee on the terrace, a Bluetooth speaker for your favorite playlist and sand‑toned decor that nods to the hotel’s vintage‑glamour roots—make it easy to stay wrapped in comfort all day.

Use code SBT25 to save 25% off ONE scheduled ride to the airport.

Dining

Chairs and tables in Mi Amor restaurant.

The open-air onsite restaurant serves a Mediterranean-inspired menu with plenty of pregnancy-friendly options like grilled vegetables, handmade pastas, fresh-caught fish and mocktails made with fresh fruits, vegetables and herbs. Meals can be taken in the main dining area or in one of the private cabanas lining the cliffside, where you can linger over dinner without feeling rushed. Room service is also available, for nights when you’d rather stay in robes and take your time.

Bartenders are as skilled at making mocktails and smoothies as they are in making margaritas. My favorite alcohol-free drink was the Jungle Fever, a tropical blend of pineapple, avocado, mint, basil, vanilla and agave. The creamy drink hits the right balance between sweet and herbaceous.

When you’re ready to mix things up, wander seven minutes down the coast to Mezzanine, Mi Amor’s sister property.

Set high on a rocky bluff, the open‑air dining room frames endless Caribbean blues. A constant breeze sweeps through the space as the sound of the surf sets a tranquil mood. The menu, a contemporary twist on Mexican coastal classics, serves up perfectly seasoned dishes like grilled shrimp, zesty papaya salad, and fiery green curry. This is a delicious spot for a comfortable outing during a stay at Mi Amor.

SheBuysTravel Tip: If you’d rather not walk, hop on the quirky hotel trolley for the short ride.

Amenities

Private cabanas at Mi Amor in Tulum.
Private cabanas allow couples an exclusive view of the Caribbean Sea’s famous turquoise coastline. Photo credit: Colibri Boutique Hotels

Mi Amor was built to help couples slow down—no planning required. The centerpiece is a small split-level infinity pool, bordered by shaded stone cabanas just above the waterline. I loved settling into a suspended hammock chair over the pool with my toes skimming the cool water as time simply drifted by.

The onsite spa is especially thoughtful toward mom-to-be needs. The relaxing prenatal massage uses gentle pressure focused on the back and a lymphatic drainage massage on the legs — perfect for relieving the tension and fluid retention that can come with pregnancy. The full treatment menu includes hot-stone massages, cacao body wraps, chocolate scrubs and flowery soaking baths, all offered in open-air jungle cabanas for that tropical connection.

And when we felt like doing something more social (without wandering far), we signed up for a cocktail class right at the hotel. We learned to craft mezcal cocktails or mocktails poolside, with fresh seasonal fruit and playful instruction from the mixologists. It capped an unforgettable afternoon without needing to step off the property.

Jaguar National Park

Mi Amor’s setting inside Tulum’s newly established Jaguar National Park means nature isn’t just nearby—it’s right outside your door. The park protects over 600 hectares of jungle and pristine coastline, and I loved how easy it was to wander straight from my room to eco‑trails shaded by palms and ceiba trees.

Along the way, I spotted spider monkeys swinging in the canopy and flashes of bright plumage from toucans and other native birds. Climb one of the park’s lookout towers and you’ll get a rare double view: turquoise Caribbean to one side, endless green jungle to the other.

Within the park, you can also explore a compact archaeological zone with a handful of atmospheric Mayan structures. A free electric shuttle loops between trailheads, or you can explore on foot at your own pace.

One morning, I hopped on a rental bike and pedaled three minutes to a secluded stretch of protected beach—perfect for a quiet swim or snorkeling among grazing sea turtles. If you’d rather have a guide, the front desk can set up a trip with a local outfitter who knows the best spots.

And of course, the famed Tulum Ruins are just 4 km north. I biked there along flat, shaded paths, locking up to wander through the cliff‑top temples before cooling off at the beach below.

Inside the park, well‑marked trails and interpretive signs connect the ruins, beaches, bike routes and small exhibits showcasing the region’s wildlife and plant life.

Cost

A three-night babymoon getaway to Tulum typically costs between $1,700 and $2,000 USD for two people, including airfare, airport transfers, the room, meals and a few small extras like a massage or mocktails by the pool.

Room rates at Mi Amor usually range from $175 to $225 USD per night, with some seasonal variation.

Getting There

Mi Amor is located inside Jaguar National Park, about 90 minutes south of Cancún International Airport or just 45 minutes from the newer Tulum International Airport. Most travelers arrive by private transfer or rental car, though taxis from the Tulum bus terminal or nearby hotels are also an option.

Because the hotel sits within the protected park zone, all visitors must pass through a checkpoint and pay a small conservation fee.

Carved into nature, El Mangroove, a Marriott resort in Costa Rica’s Gulf of Papagayo, delivered a perfect slice of pura vida for my intimate vacation escape. The secluded refuge allowed me to push aside any distractions.

As I embraced nature while basking in small-scale, luxurious accommodations, this all-ages resort is perfect for the traveler who craves elevated amenities while being immersed in an idyllic setting.

A Boutique Gem Located in Guanacaste

Part of Marriott’s Autograph Collection, El Mangroove brings the luxury that I have come to expect from a signature Marriott property. The Guancaste resort is tucked away from the busy areas, feels secluded and is far different from the large-scale, all-inclusive resorts.

From the welcome drink as my car arrived to the little gestures that appeared within my room, all the little details make the stay memorable.

Use code SBT25 to save 25% off ONE scheduled ride to the airport.

Luxury Surrounded by Nature’s Beauty

A special element of these rooms is the indoor/outdoor configuration. It celebrates the eco-friendly aspects of the resort. While the bed and bath space is completely enclosed, my first-floor room had a screened-in sitting area. It was the perfect spot to enjoy a morning coffee, leisurely afternoon read or just a quiet moment of solitude.

SheBuysTravel Tip: The resort is surrounded by nature. It is best to be thoughtful about keeping windows closed, especially at night.

Enjoy the Afternoon Relaxing at the Pool

With two pools on property, the spaces offer a different type of escape. The elongated, black bottom pool by the Matiss restaurant was my go-to spot for a dip. While this pool is open to all, the cozy cabanas made it easy to enjoy some quiet moments.

In contrast, the adults-only pool feels totally different. The tiered lounges were a perfect spot for sunbathing or reading a book. It was a little more open, but it never felt crowded.

SheBuysTravel Tip: Costa Rica’s beaches are public. To have a quieter, private experience, sit by the pools.

Dining at El Mangroove

For me, food is an integral part of any vacation experience. El Mangroove has three onsite restaurants, Makoko, Matiss and Malu. Unlike some all-inclusive resorts that focus on abundance, the resort’s culinary team celebrates the attention to little details.

From precisely plated desserts to the local ingredients used in the entrees, every dish has a nod to the region.

Two of the three restaurants focus on Latin American cuisine. Most of the dishes are flavorful, but not intensely spicy. I would highly recommend fish dishes because many of those offerings are freshly caught.

Makoko’s open-air setting is the perfect spot to dine as the sun sets.

SheBuysTravel Tip: If traveling with a group, consider ordering a few plates and share amongst the table.

Bearth Spa Offers Tranquil Relaxation

When I’m on vacation, I always splurge on a spa service. Bearth Spa captured my attention from the first moment. After enjoying a welcome beverage, I could choose from an indoor treatment room or a secluded, private outdoor space.

The outdoor treatment rooms feel like a personal hideaway.

The spa staff catered to my requests. From making me feel immediately comfortable to just the right pressure to work out the tension in my shoulders, that blissful hour felt more like an eternity.

SheBuysTravel Tip: Arrive a few minutes early before a treatment to enjoy a welcome drink and relax in the garden.

Take Advantage of Special Experiences

My time at El Mangroove was limited, but I managed to squeeze in several special opportunities to experience some of the Costa Rican culture. For example, I attended a staff-led coffee tasting that showcased both the local roasteries as well as proper coffee brewing techniques.

The staff will coordinate with you to find activities that match your preferences, including:

  • paddleboarding
  • snorkeling
  • boat rides

SheBuysTravel Tip: Always check the weather when booking an excursion. Some activities leave directly from the shoreline.

Leave Your Leaves Ties Me to Costa Rica Forever

Whenever I travel, I always try to find a special memento or souvenir. Instead of taking something from my stay at El Mangroove, I left a token behind through the “Leave Your Leaves” program.

This unique activity allowed me to plant a small mangrove tree which will be used to reforest the surrounding area. It is a gift that keeps my vacation memories forever rooted to the resort.

Found primarily in Mexico and the Caribbean, all-inclusive resorts are a terrific option for families — but not all are the same. As a frequent visitor to all-inclusives, I’ve learned that choosing the right type is key to a successful trip.

Following are several categories of all-inclusive family resorts – with some recommended choices – to help you select the kind that best fits your family’s needs.

You can choose an all-inclusive family-friendly resort based on things such as:

  • What does it include? Does it work for all ages?
  • Are there a wide variety of kid-centered amenities?
  • What type of family amenities, activities & entertainment exist?
  • Are there any adult/grandparent amenities (or quieter/tranquil spots for those who need them)
  • Does it work for your budget (entry-level, luxury, ultra luxury)
  • What’s the dining like?
  • Would a resort with both à la carte & all-inclusive plans be better?

Resorts typically vary by:

  • Age Policies and Restrictions
  • Primary Target Audience
  • Activities and Entertainment
  • Location and Environment
  • Dining Options
  • Accommodation Options
  • Extra Perks

SheBuysTravel Tip: Skip the airport stress — Lyft’s On-Time Pickup Promise guarantees your scheduled ride shows up within 10 minutes of your pickup time. If it doesn’t? You’ll get Lyft Cash. • Good for: Families (including multigen) who want a quieter beachfront escape with attentive service and good food along with an optional all-inclusive plan
    • Other: The resort offers lovely & spacious rooms and suites, some with balconies overlooking the ocean

Sometimes, of course, you can find a lodging option that combines more than one offering. Be sure the one that’s most important to your group and your goal is the one that leads the way, no matter what the location. These considerations all help to make the choice of an all-inclusive one that effectively meets your family’s needs in the best way possible.

Hyatt provided accommodations for the writer, who moderated a food event.

When it is time to reconnect as a couple, my partner and I want beautiful sunsets, vibrant nightlife, and luxury within our fingertips. Breathless Cabo San Lucas lured us for that romantic getaway. The Hyatt All-Inclusive, adults-only resort located on the bustling marina has everything that we could have wanted. Scrumptious food, endless activities, and opportunities to rekindle that romance. For couples who want to be in the heart of the action, with a taste of elegance, this Mexican resort took our breath away.

Couples Find Their True Selves at Breathless Cabo San Lucas

  • Resort balances private time and group activities
  • Smaller, all-inclusive resort feels cozy

While all-inclusive resorts are popular in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, we prefer a smaller venue versus the expansive, gigantic resorts. The adults-only Breathless Cabo San Lucas has 169 suites. It is just the right size. It allowed us to mingle but also have alone time. Cozy restaurant tables, intimate pool seating, and even the open air lounge were conducive for us to plan our day to fit any and every mood.

Luxurious Amenities Invite Couples to Linger in The Room

  • Quiet mornings on the balcony are perfect for room service breakfast
  • Comfy beds with smart window placement invite relaxation

On a vacation, we appreciate the opportunity to leisurely linger in a well-appointed room. The spacious suite was perfect for lazy mornings and late night unwinding. The views balance the stunning landscape with the bustling marina. With 24-hour room service, several mornings started with a leisurely breakfast on the balcony. A few nights ended with late night munchies after dancing the night away. These well-appointed rooms are the perfect enclave for couples looking to escape.

Two Pools, Two Different Vibes

  • Marina infinity pool is best for quiet moments
  • Rooftop pool has an energetic atmosphere

The pool is always the place to see and be seen on vacations. While my partner loves to mix and mingle, sometimes I prefer a calmer vibe. Breathless Cabo San Lucas offers two very different pools. In some ways, it felt like two vacations in one. The intimate marina infinite pool is quieter. It is the perfect spot to sip a cocktail, read a book, or take a little snooze.

When we craved an energetic atmosphere, the rooftop pool was always bustling. From a DJ spinning a beat to games and activities, the high energy space ensured that no one is ever bored.

  • Best spot to try a little of everything: Bites Gastro Lounge is the restaurant when you can’t decide on a flavor
  • Restaurant for lingering: Fish Nets, just steps from the beach, is lovely for a late night dinner

With 12 restaurants and bars on property, we could choose a new dinner spot every night or return to a favorite time and again. Featuring a wide array of global cuisine, the all-inclusive service allowed us to sample a variety of dishes, enjoy a multi-course meal, or just have a little nosh. Again, Breathless Cabo San Lucas satisfied every whim, craving, or vacation must-have.

Immerse Yourself into Ultimate Relaxation at the Spa

  • Couples massage is a must
  • Relax in the private patio space before or after a treatment

While my partner prefers to be in the heart of the action, the spa is the place that whisks me away into vacation mode. The intimate spa offers an array of traditional treatments. The real gem is the quiet patio area where guests can unwind before or after a treatment. From the jacuzzi to the comfortable chairs, the space offers a moment of zen.

Hikes, Yoga, and More Are Must-Try Activities

  • Resort offers free activities like morning hikes and sound bath yoga
  • Bookable activities include excursions, paddleboarding, and more.

While sitting on a chaise lounge is blissful, morning activities keep the heart racing. During our stay, we participated in a hike, sound bath yoga and a few other fun activities around the marina. The early morning hike is a must because it offers the most impressive views. Just a warning, the terrain is steep. Luckily, there are plenty of refreshments waiting back at the resort.

Local Attractions Are Just Steps Away

  • Local charters offer snorkeling, scenic views, and whale watching.
  • Popular nightlife is a few blocks away.

While Breathless Cabo San Lucas offers every amenity, we could not miss exploring a little.  It is not a trip to the area without seeing El Arco de Cabo San Lucas or hitting Cabo Wabo Cantina. From fishing charters to shopping, there is a little bit of everything in this area.

If your dream Caribbean vacation involves a mix of moving, lounging, drinking and dining, JW Marriott Cancun Resort & Spa delivers on all fronts. Located in Cancun’s Hotel Zone, this beachfront property is ideal for travelers craving a balance of fitness, wellness, culture and culinary indulgence.

I recently spent three days immersed in a curated wellness itinerary at JW Marriott Cancun and left wanting more — especially since I only managed to try two of the resort’s 150 specialty-crafted margaritas.

Rise and shine with seaside stretches

I started my stay at JW Marriott Cancun with a sunrise yoga class in the spinning room by the spa. Normally, yoga is held in the gardens, but a light rain moved us indoors. I worked up a sweat stretching and finished the class ready for the omelet station and a fresh-squeezed OJ at Bravio.

Fitness classes offered throughout the week include:

  • Abs class
  • Basic yoga
  • Box
  • Cross training
  • Functional training
  • Legs, bums and tums
  • Pilates

Let us inspire your travels! Sign up for our newsletter now.

Gym with indoor pool and health bar

The JW Marriott Cancun fitness center feels like one you’d find on a cruise ship, with view in every direction. In a large, bright room with floor-to-ceiling windows, you can run or spin while watching the waves.

TechnoGym equipment includes:

  • Ellipticals
  • Exercise bikes
  • Rowing machine
  • Stair climbers
  • Treadmills
  • Weights

You can also work with a personal trainer. Or, if you’re more of a swimmer, you can do laps in the spa’s heated indoor pool. Post workout, relax in the sauna and steam room. Then grab a detox smoothie at the gym’s Health Bar.

Learn to play pickleball, at last

I may be the only middle-aged woman in America who hasn’t tried pickleball yet, but the urge to learn is strong. Fortunately, JW Marriott has tennis and pickleball courts you can reserve to give it a try.

Reservations include complimentary use of:

  • Tennis rackets
  • Tennis balls
  • Pickleball paddles
  • Wiffle balls

You’ll have to provide the cute outfit. And you may want to buy travel insurance, since a lot of people seem to hurt themselves playing pickleball. But if you’re serious about learning, tennis and pickleball lessons are available.

Spa, glorious spa

If you’re flying to Mexico for a wellness retreat, you should book multiple spa treatments. That just makes good financial sense.

Here are a few dreamy options:

  • Hunab Ku Mayan Massage
  • Ichtaca The Secret of Mayan Treatment
  • Massage on the Beach
  • Platinum Luxury Anti-Age Treatment
  • Stress Victim’s Spa Cure

The spa cure is a massage and facial combo, which all of us stress victims need. Arrive early for your treatment(s) so you have time to try the hydrotherapy circuit, which includes a steam room, dry sauna, hot tub and cold plunge pool.

Palm trees, palapas and pools

The pools and beach at JW Marriott Cancun were not at all crowded when I visited in June. I opted for padded loungers by the pool, but you might prefer to rent a cabana or Bali bed.

Pools and beach options:

  • Adults-only pool with Caribbean Sea views
  • Family-friendly infinity pool
  • Outdoor hot tub
  • Heated indoor lap pool and large jacuzzi
  • Direct beach access
Palm trees and palapas by the pool
This beachside infinity pool is so large, it could be three pools. Photo credit: Heidi Gollub

Treat yourself to tostadas and churros

I ate my way across JW Marriott Cancun each day, from breakfast tostadas with green juice in the morning to giant churros late at night.

On-site dining options include:

  • Bravio Spanish Cuisine: Spanish cuisine with tapas on the menu — order one of the four paellas on the menu and the server will ring a bell
  • Gustino Italian Grill: Fresh pasta made onsite — I recommend the homemade lasagne
  • Sasi Thai: Al fresco dining to the sound of crashing waves — everything here is delicious and beautifully plated

Spots to grab a drink:

  • Beachwalk: Casual poolside snacks and cocktails
  • JW Lobby Bar: Home of the 150 types of margaritas, with flavors ranging from classic to exotic
  • LA 16 Speakeasy: This cozy “secret” bar requires a Spanish password to enter, but there are clues to help you guess

Club 91 guests also receive exclusive access to a private lounge with all-day gourmet offerings.

Cooking classes by special request

If you’ll be visiting with a group, call ahead to see what specialty classes you can book.

Available cooking classes might include:

  • Guacamole
  • Pasta
  • Salsa
  • Sushi

My group tried a sushi-making class and it was a blast. The sushi I hand rolled and cut looked a bit rough, but it still tasted great.

Cultural wellness day trips

JW Marriott Cancun is conveniently for taking mini adventures away from the resort. I took a day trip to Cenote Sol y Luna for a Mystical Mayan Excursion, which included:

  • A traditional Mayan ceremony with a local shaman
  • Swimming in a sacred cenote
  • A regional Yucatecan meal of salbutes in the jungle

I ate my weight in chicken salbutes, heavenly bites of puffed, deep-fried tortillas. They sure did hit the spot after swimming in the cenote and resting in a shaded hammock.

Plan your next wellness getaway

When planning a trip to Cancun, consider working around sargassum season (April to August) and hurricane season (June to November). You’ll get the best weather December through April.

I’ve stayed in my share of all-inclusives. Buffets, bracelets, watered-down cocktails in plastic cups—you know the drill. But Hotel AWA, set on the pristine shores of Chile’s Lake Llanquihue, rewrites the all-inclusive  script.  It trades the bottomless piña coladas for glacier-fed rafting trips, guided volcano hikes, and cultural deep dives with local artisans. You won’t find tacky pool games or towel animals; instead, there are panoramic views of the snow-capped Osorno Volcano, homemade empanadas fresh from the oven, and more than two dozen thoughtfully curated outdoor adventures.

The Setting

view of volcano from Hotel Awa
The snow-capped Osorno Volcano is visible from nearly every vantage point in the hotel. Photo Credit: Jennifer Simonson

Hotel AWA sits along the quiet southern shore of Lake Llanquihue, about 20 minutes from Puerto Varas, a charming town known for German-inspired architecture, lakeside cafés, and vibrant artisan markets. The area, part of Chile’s breathtaking northern Patagonia and famed Lake District, is defined by lush forests, snow-capped volcanoes, and sapphire-blue lakes carved by glaciers. Just across the water, the symmetrical peak of Osorno Volcano dominates the horizon creating a striking backdrop visible from nearly every vantage point. This region is a gateway to some of Patagonia’s most unforgettable landscapes.

What the All-Inclusive Actually Includes

This is where AWA flips the script. Instead of an open bar and buffet lines, your stay includes:

  • Daily curated excursions with a private guide
  • Three meals a day at the hotel restaurant (think local trout ceviche and handmade pastas)
  • Airport transfers and transport to excursion sites
  • Access to the hotel spa, indoor pool, and kayaks”

Accommodations

At first glance, the hotel looks sculptural and striking, all concrete, glass, and steel—a dramatic contrast to the natural tranquility around it. Step inside, and it softens into understated warmth: native wood, crackling fireplaces, and expansive windows framing uninterrupted views of sapphire water and volcanic peaks.

Originally designed as a private family home by renowned Chilean architects Mauricio Fuentes and Jimena Hernández, AWA still feels personal, intimate, and handcrafted. With just 25 guest rooms, each thoughtfully designed with soaking tubs, plush king beds, and private fireplaces, the hotel encourages lingering. You’ll drift to sleep watching clouds gather around the volcano and wake gently to the rhythmic lapping of lake waves.

Dining

Meals at AWA are as thoughtful as the excursions. Much of the produce is sourced from AWA’s own greenhouse and local farmers, a reflection of its commitment to sustainability and community. The wine cellar holds over 120 Chilean labels, and staff are eager to recommend perfect pairings. The hotel’s culinary program leans into Chilean terroir, balancing elegance and comfort. There’s no dress code here—just panoramic views of the lake and Osorno Volcano from your dinner table. Each meal feels intentional, highlighting flavors deeply rooted in Patagonia—perfectly seared lamb, seasonal produce from the hotel’s greenhouse, and carefully selected local wines, all enjoyed against a cinematic backdrop of lake and volcano.

Amenities

AWA offers a full suite of thoughtful amenities to match its luxurious, low-key vibe. Guests have access to a glass-walled indoor pool, dry sauna, fitness center, and full-service spa. Kayaks are available for paddling along the lake, and the cozy library and bar lounge are ideal spots to unwind between excursions.

What’s Nearby

AWA is located just outside Puerto Varas, a charming town known for its German-style architecture, lakeside promenade, and artisan markets. Nearby, guests can visit Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park, the oldest in Chile, or take day trips to see the Osorno and Calbuco volcanoes, Petrohué Falls, and the island of Chiloé.

Safety Features

Hotel AWA prioritizes guest well-being with features like 24-hour reception, on-site medical support, in-room safes, and keycard access. Excursions are led by certified local guides, and weather-related safety is built into the daily planning process to ensure guests enjoy their adventures with peace of mind.

Accessibility and Sustainability

AWA isn’t just beautiful. It’s also thoughtful. The hotel is wheelchair-accessible, with ramps, wide hallways, and ADA-compliant rooms. Sustainability is built into everything: geothermal heating, locally sourced food, and partnerships with conservationists preserving Patagonia’s landscapes and cultures.

So, Why Is It Called Hotel AWA?

Boating through Todos los Santos Lake
Boating through Todos los Santos Lake is one of the 30 outdoor options Hotel Awa provides. Photo Credit: Jennifer Simonson

Because “awa” means “water” in Mapudungun, the language of the Mapuche people. And you are never far from water here. Between the lake, rivers, and volcanic hot springs, the name fits.

What Makes Hotel AWA Special?

It feels personal. Like someone designed this place for people who are burned out and craving both quiet and wonder. The architecture, the food, the excursions—everything is intentional.

Is It Environmentally Sustainable?

Yes. From construction to operations, AWA was built to be low-impact and high-integrity. That includes eco-conscious infrastructure, waste management, and the championing of cultural preservation.

Is It Accessible?

Yes. The hotel is fully accessible to guests with mobility issues, and the staff is happy to customize activities accordingly.

What Outdoor Activities Can You Do?

The all-inclusive hotel includes more more than 30, including:

  • Rafting the Petrohué River
  • Hiking Osorno Volcano
  • Visiting traditional artisans
  • Biking
  • Sea kayaking
  • Fly fishing
  • Soaking in thermal baths
  • Horseback riding

Getting There

Hotel AWA is located just over 20 minutes from the Puerto Montt Airport (PMC), the main gateway to Chile’s Lake District. From there, the hotel arranges a scenic private transfer that hugs the lakeshore and winds past volcanoes and forests. I appreciated having someone else navigate the rural roads while I soaked in the view—rolling green hills, grazing sheep, and the occasional glimpse of Osorno Volcano appearing through the clouds.

If you’re headed to Mexico City and want to stay somewhere that feels equal parts luxury boutique and cosmopolitan cool, Hilton’s Hotel Umbral is it. The hotel is just steps from the Zócalo in Centro Histórico, the largest plaza in Latin America.  I was impressed by how every detail felt intentional and reflective of the owners who are serious art collectors and design enthusiasts.

What Makes It Special:

  • A Former Office Building, Reimagined: The bones of the building are old, but the vibe is all modern Mexico. The owners converted this downtown office building into a boutique-style hotel that is intimate yet spacious. The architecture leans into contrast—with a “light to dark” design concept that plays out across floors and suites.
  • Art is Everywhere: You won’t find generic hotel prints here. Every room and hallway features original work by local artists. The entire hotel is designed like a gallery—and lucky for us, we got to attend “Death by Landscape,” a gallery event on site.  Artists mingled with guests, talked about their work, and created an experience that felt personal and local.

The hotel owners also attended the art gallery event and that gave me an opportunity to learn more about them – their motivation for the Umbral (and others), and how Hilton embraced their vision, making it an easy partnership choice.

Let us inspire your travels! Sign up for our newsletter now.

  • Stylish Modern Suites: My suite sat at the end of a dramatic hallway, opening into two rooms—ideal for girlfriends traveling together or a mother-daughter duo.
    • The entry: moody and dimly lit, serene design – almost like a private lounge.
    • The bedroom: airy, bright, and modern, with plush bedding and blackout curtains. The light-to-dark theme really shines here—pun intended.
    • Balconies and suites with private hanging garden available
    • Rainfall shower, local bath products, strong Wi-Fi, and comfortable workspace

Thoughtful Extras

Attend an art gallery event at Umbral Hotel.

  • Tequila Happy Hour: Complimentary, near reception, with light snacks and regional pours—a perfect way to kick off the evening.
  • Business Center: Not your average hotel setup. There are works spaces and it’s also stocked with a record player and a crate of vintage vinyl from legendary Latina artists.

  • Cubo Concept Store: Is a unique and local gift shop in the lobby, filled with artisan-made goods and souvenirs from clothing to art, of course.

  • Multiple Art Galleries and Events:  Just past reception is a small, vivid gallery showcasing colorful, fantastical creatures of Mexican folk art.  Above the gift shop is the main gallery featuring local artists and events.  Follow @nardo_cocktailclub and @hotelumbral for dates.

Dining at the Umbral

  • Terraza Umbral (Rooftop Bar & Pool)
Rooftop views of the city and the infinity pool, homemade tortillas and fresh grilled options. The rooftop is open to non-guests after 5 p.m., so it can be lively on weekends.
  • Lumbre (Formal Dining) Known for their homemade butter rolled in ash. It tasted rich, creamy—almost like a soft cheese. The ash? Barely noticeable, but a conversation starter.
  • Paxia: Star Chef Daniel Ovadia serves modern Mexican menu in a gorgeous rooftop setting.
  • Ojo de Agua Café: Across from the gift shop, this casual café offers strong coffee, fresh juices, housemade horchata and easy grab-and-go breakfasts.
  • Oliva: A more casual approach to local fare, served with Mexican flare and huge portions. We ate breakfast here and could not even begin to finish our meals.

Nearby Attractions (within a 15 minute walk)

  • Across the street is Panabex Museum, a private collection that’s free to visit and well worth an hour of your time.  It is free and hotel guests are offered an early entrance 30 minutes before it opens to the public.
  • The Postal Museum, the MC Metropolitan Cathedral
  • BalcondelZocalo is a  – gorgeous views, delicious fresh food. In house grown herbs.

Good to Know

The hall way in the renovated office building of Umbral Hotel.

  • Pet Friendly
  • All water, including ice, is filtered.
  • Located in a safe, walkable neighborhood
  • Rooms with balcony or courtyard views available.
  • The sitting room in my suite included a very comfortable couch that also worked as a twin bed – great for mother/daughter or mother/son trips.
  • The gym is well stocked with Instagram-worthy lighting
  • Next door is the only Tim Horton’s I have seen with a mural by a local artist on the wall and a cocktail lounge upstairs.

As a female staying here alone, I felt safe, welcomed, and creatively recharged. I rarely walk around any city alone at night and Mexico City is no exception. I didn’t feel unsafe but I am careful.  I would definitely stay here again. And bring friends.

This trip was hosted. All opinions expressed are entirely my own.

Like many travelers to Mexico, we wore a wristband. But ours didn’t allow access to buffets, unlimited cocktails, pools or nightly shows. Instead, it gave us the privilege of exploring a protected natural marine ecosystem that Jacque Cousteau once called ‘the aquarium of the world’.

An Overview of Camp Cecil de la Isla

The sky is lit up with shades of orange for this sunset view at Camp Cecil de la Isla, Sea of Cortez, Baja California Sur, Mexico
Sunset view at Camp Cecil de la Isla. Photo Credit: Jennifer Merrick

For three glorious nights, we slept on the beach in luxe tents with real beds on the uninhabited Espiritu Santo Island. This wildlife haven is part of a Mexican national park of the same name and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, famous for its vibrant marine life, dramatic volcanic landscape and rich biodiversity.

Todos Santos Eco Adventures (TOSEA), a local family-owned business hosts this intimate (16 guests max) and eco-conscious adventure. It includes highly-trained guides, all activities and equipment, accommodations, transportation to the island, daily happy hours, all meals and park entrance fees.

Are you ready to explore more adventures? Let us inspire you!

Included Activities

Swimming with Sea Lions

On Los Islotes (Rock Islets) hundreds of sea lions lounged on the shore, looking lazy and moving ungainly. Under the water they transformed into graceful and curious creatures whose flips, swooshes and spins seemed as choreographed as an underwater ballet. And then this happened: a pup looked through my snorkel mask, directly into my eyes and flipped under me, grazing my stomach – twice. A truly magical encounter.

SheBuysTravel Tip: Adhere to the online packing list, which includes essentials like warm layers for cooler desert nights, reef-safe sunscreen, insect repellent, and a reusable water bottle.

Paddling the Waters

Two kayakers paddle the turquoise water of the Sea of Cortez, Baja California Sur, Mexico
Kayaking excursion at Camp Cecil de la Isla. Photo Credit: Jennifer Merrick

We explored an inlet close to our camping site, where jagged volcanic cliffs dwarfed our kayaks and the clearest turquoise water imaginable invited us to swim.  On the way back a devil ray jumped out of the water right in front of us. Paddleboards are also available.

Spotting Wildlife on the Tortuga (turtle) Highway.

The turtles draw visitors to this secluded cove. But the pelicans stole the show on our visit. Dozens of these large, prehistoric-looking birds hovered in and above the water, feeding on the sardines below the surface. Watching them dive expertly into the water mesmerized us. And yes, we did see turtles, too. They popped in and out of the water as if they were playing a game of hide and seek.

Hiking the ‘Funnel’ on Isla Partida

A guide shares his knowledge of the cardon cactus on Isla Partida in the Sea of Cortez, Baja California Sur, Mexico.

Our guide, Bernardo, shared his extensive knowledge of the desert plants on this stunning island, located next to Espiritu Santo Island, where we were camping. The towering Cardon Cacti were the prickly stars, but the desert revealed a richness of vegetation that surprised us. We scrambled up rocks to a lookout point that wowed us with the contrast of the browns and reds of the rocky cliffs with the emerald green of the sea below.

Snorkeling the World’s Aquarium

Other excursions to the region’s reefs explain why Cousteau gave the region its name. Schools of tropical fish darted around us, with king angelfish, balloon pufferfish and parrotfish being among the colorful inhabitants.

Lounging on a Pristine Beach

Just because there’s the option of morning and afternoon activities, doesn’t mean you’re obligated to take them. Soaking up the sun, napping and sipping cervezas are perfectly acceptable activity choices.

Indulging in Happy Hours and Al Fresco Dining

Hibiscus mezcalitas are served up at happy hour at Camp Cecil de la Isla

I still have no idea how our chef created such amazing meals with only a couple of camp stoves. The seafood was swimming-in-the-morning fresh and the tortillas were camp-made.  All our companions’ dietary considerations were accommodated. A daily happy hour just as the sky started to put on its rosy sunset show featured local favorite cocktails like margaritas and hibiscus mezcalitas.

Who’s the right traveler for Camp Cecil de la Isla?

Best For:

  • Nature lovers, snorkelers, kayakers and campers
  • Multi-gen families since each member can tailor their adventure to their comfort level
  • Glampers who like a soft bed and great food

Don’t Go If You:

  • Are squeamish about outdoor toilets and showers
  • Have mobility issues that would impede you from getting out of a boat and walking up to the beach
  • Can’t stand being out of cell service

Fun Facts

catch amazing views of blue-footed boobies

  • The Sea of Cortez is home to over 891 fish species and 39% of the world’s marine mammal species, including humpback whales, orcas, bottlenose dolphins, sea otters, and, of course, sea lions.
  • The largest fish on the planet (up to 59 feet and 15 tons), the whale shark, congregates here from October to April, providing opportunities to observe and snorkel with these gentle giants.
  • Todos Santos Eco Adventures (TOSEA) has garnered multiple awards for its commitment to sustainability and conservation. Solar power, a leave-no-trace policy, no single-use plastics are just a few of their green initiatives.
  • Isla Espiritu Santo is home to ancient cave paintings believed to be over 6000 years old.
  • Rare and unique indigenous species include the blue-footed booby (this bird famous for its bright blue feet is more associated with the Galapagos but is also found here),  the babisuri or the ringtail cat (a relative of the raccoon) and the vaquita (a member of the porpoise family that’s the world’s smallest and rarest marine mammal).
  • The region also has mountains. Many visitors are surprised by the Baja Californian peaks when they arrive. TOSEA also offers a glamping experience that highlights the unique ecosystem of the mountains and the vaquero (cowboy) culture.

Getting There

La Paz International Airport is the closest to the island. Several airlines offer direct flights from major US cities, including Dallas and Phoenix. Los Cabos International Airport (SJD) is another option (about a two-hour drive to La Paz). TOSEA can arrange transportation from the airports. Once in La Paz, all transportation to the island (approximately a 60-minute boat ride) is included in the experience.
